Dog Health Questions: DS: What do you think about me starting my own website & dog training videos?

Seems all I have to do is have at least 4 dogs, read some training websites, take some classes from a *trainer* and/or maybe take lessons from a Petsmart *trainer*?

Then I can create my OWN website, call myself a trainer, make some videos of how to train dogs then people will believe every word I say, use my techniques and bow to my expansive knowledge about *dogs*.

Seems to be all that is needed in this *don't touch the doggy* world and if I did this would you accept my so-called *experience* as gospel and use it to teach your little doggies?

Oh, I use tools and *hands on*. Would you still want me to help you & your doggies? And I have had a multiple dog household for over 32 years.......doesn't that qualify me as a *trainer*?

And if you see me using an E collar to teach a proofed *come* would you still want me to teach your doggy?

Seriously? Does any of this REALLY qualify me as a *trainer*? If it does, what is one of the first things you would like me to teach your doggy?

(Disclaimer: I am NOT a trainer....)

What to Look For in the Best Dog Training Program

  • As a dog owner myself i can tell you to start with training your dog to:
Listen to you (Listen to your commands!)
Make him neat (Dogs must do there needs outside -.-')

I trained my dog these things first (Still he jumps on my bed and stuff but yea...)

And yes, even if your using a E collar i would see you as a trainer, but try to do things without.

  • I would rather you train my dog than any of the "trainers" I've seen at Petsmart because at least you have half a clue what you are doing. As you are well aware there are no credentials to be able to call yourself a trainer. All you have to do is hang out your proverbial shingle and if you tell people what they want to hear you'll get clients.

  • a very cool idea

  • Lots of sarcasm this morning...
    :)
    Good Morning

  • I get your point. On the other hand I figured out a long time ago that, in order to be a trainer or teacher, you just need to know more than the horse, dog, or owner you are working with.

I started teaching other people how to train their horses (and training, myself) when I was 14. Did I know everything there was to know? Nope. But I had a good base of knowledge, a fair amount of experience, and knew more than any of the people I was teaching. Sharing what I knew was helpful to them, and I could read or ask more knowledgeable people questions when I ran across something I was not sure how to handle.

Plus teaching is a skill in itself. I met a guy a couple of weeks ago who is very knowledgeable about Shutzhund, and has a lot of experience, but when it comes to people he cant teach his way out of a paper bag.

I don't take anything anyone says as "gospel". But I think basic training is pretty simple, and most people should be able to master it with most dogs. You don't need a trainer with fifty years experience to get your dog to sit and walk on a leash.

But if I wanted to get into a specialty, then I would look for someone who has a proven track record in that field.

  • As I you are well aware the people who would most benefit from taking the hounds in hands are the least likely to seek out a decent dog trainer with a reputation for proven results, & would prefer to remain blinkered to the problem, accept it, take mistaken pride in “protective behaviours” or just grimly decide to live with it....until the day they turn the dog into rescue.

Therefore unless you could convince someone to give you your own show on TV to lend credibility to your claim as a canine fix-it, a website is not likely to get many hits from people who want a quick & preferably cheap fix to whatever behavioral problem they think the dog has [more likely to be an owner problem, but hey ho]

Venting frustration against the mindset & opinions of owners can be really efficacious!!!

  • Launi, the pup has been driving me crazy this morning. Please come up here and knock some sense into her .... please?

That's the bad thing I'm finding about smaller dogs - they can literally fit anywhere and find the most random things...then chew them into oblivion. What. A. Treat.

As for qualifying as a "trainer" - it's a very easy thing to do. And with the type of training people are looking for these days, coupled with the fact that they seem able to overlook major behavioral problems with their dogs, means that literally anyone could do it. This is why people should research a heck of a lot more before they commit, but we all know no one really does that, don't we ?
