Dog Training Problems - How to Overcome Them

Recommended Answer:
Some dogs simply don't tell their owners when they need to go outside. It's important to keep a steady schedule. However, I did train my dog to go to the door once. Every time she went near the door, I took her out. Simple as that. There are some problems with this method, such as the dog just wanting to go outside to play. Make sure she gets plent of playtime outside to keep this habit from forming. Make her stay out there until it uses the bathroom, then take her immediately back inside to teach her that going to the door this way is for potty purposes. Good luck!

Dog Training Technique - Correcting Dog Behavior

  • This is what I did with my puppy. I hung some bells on the back door (since a Yorkie is a small dog, I would suggest hanging them somewhere he can reach) and every time I would take him out to go potty I would ring the bells. I gradually moved on to using his paw or nose to ring the bells and he eventually caught on. Now he rings the bells when he wants to go outside (potty or not, though I can usually tell when he HAS to go).
