I trained my 9 month old pup the basic training. Sit, stay, come, and down. Is that enough? Did i do good? And if not what else. Fyi i did it all myself

How to use the Remote Dog Training Collar

Recommended Answer:
It sounds like you've got the basics under control. Here are a list of things that well trained should be like:
Doesn't jump up on people
Non-aggressive
Comes when called
Toilet trained
No aggression near food (every dinner time, come to your pup's bowl and kneel down putting a treat in his bowl)
Socialization to dogs, animals, cars, people etc.
Good Luck!

Dog Training - How to Potty Train Your Dog & End Your Frustration - It is Easier Than You Think

  • It depends on how obedient it is to those commands. They can learn those commands a lot younger. The key is having them do them quickly whenever you tell them to.

No it's not enough. Adding more will keep the dog stimulated and build its confidence. Go into tricks or sports commands.
Others already gave you good basic commands like drop it, leave it and sit away from you (rather than coming to you to sit), these are ones you should teach that could save its life.

  • That sounds good to me? This is sort of a strange question. I suppose that you've got the basic things down, as long as you've made sure that you're dog really knows them well. I mean other than that, just training your dog behavioral things like not jumping on people/furniture if you don't prefer it, and not to eat food off of the counter, etc. etc. Normal obedience things. Other than that, I think you're good? xD

  • you should take him to puppy training class. I take my puppy to a basic puppy training class at PetSmart! You could also go to a better place, but PetSmart worked for us! So far, he has learned sit, come, and leave it and it has been 2 weeks. I see you haven't taught your puppy leave it. Leave it is one of the most important basic ones. Say, you drop a bottle of Tylenol and it spills all over the floor. If your puppy is trained you can shout LEAVE IT and your puppy will. It is very simple trick to learn, but it is hard to explain. Good luck! ♪♫
    p.s- It's did I do well

  • well we dont know exactly how good because we cant see your dog. but if he knows the basics and knows them really well, then you can start teaching him new tricks that can be more fun. another trick you might consider teaching him is "heel"(walking by your side) so that when you take him on a walk, he's not the leader, you are.

    a list of fun tricks:
    roll over
    jump
    sit up
    get your tail
teach him the names of his toys..tell him to go find his __________ (fill in the blank with a toy)
    drop it
    leave it
    take it
    boundary train it (if needed)

the most important of these are drop it, leave it, take it, & heel

  • No that is not enough. You should show him the LEAVE IT command. So, when you have to get out of the room and you leave your food or something you say LEAVE IT and he will know to leave it. You can also show him rollover, fetch, heel, speak, 360, and weave. Weave is when he weaves through your legs while you are walking.

    Hope I helped :D

  • Well, I haven't seen your dog so I can't say if you "did good". I taught my dog paw (good for wiping mud off), back (lay on back, good or cleaning), stretch (good before walks), potty train, crate train and I'd also teach your dog fetch for days you don't want to walk :)

  • Well make sure he's potty trained lol and I'd try and test him in different situations and take him on walks. See how he performs. If he's hard to control and doesn't listen, he needs more discipline. However, it sounds like you're doing a great job so far. Hope I helped! :)

  • Right. If you think you have done well now go to your local club and take it further. Go for your Good Citizen Bronze, Silver and Gold. Great sense of achievement there.http://tedthedogbooks.com

  • It's best to take your dog to a formal obedience class...Not so much for the training, but for the socialization....It's a need for a good dog.. :-)

  • Just depends on what you think is well trained! Try teaching him spin. My dog learned that pretty easily and he is a slow learner! Its a fun trick.

  • Id teach him quiet and leave it. Off if that isn't what you meant by down, and if it was then lie down.

  • you did it yourself? WOW amazing. so did everyone else with their dogs!. and no that is not enough.
you should teach your pup more.
