Dog Training - Most Common Mistakes While Training Your Dog

Recommended Answer:
If you can't afford a class - buy a book. There a ton of good dog training books out there. The biggest factor in the success of dog training is you making the commitment of time to work with your dog every single day. Not only does the repetition remind your dog what he is supposed to do, but it also develops the bond between you and your dog.

Dog Training Courses - Which One is Right For You?

  • Petsmart does it for 99 dollars- 8 weeks!

  • If you love him so much price shouldn't matter. Try one-on-one obedience classes, they shouldn't cost too much. Good luck!

  • I found some pretty good dog training tips on the internet for free! I'd check those out first.

If you reslly want to pay for lessons, check out your local parks & rec centers, they usually have inexpensive classes.

  • 1. PetsMart or Petco may have classes.
    2. The Humane Society, SPCA, or your Vet may have some suggestions.
    3. Some dog clubs have training classes.
    4. You can go to the library and check out tapes and books for free. Look for Ian Dunbar, "Positive Training" in the title, and ask about an interlibrary loan for "Turid Rugaas" books and tapes.
    5. There may be some ads in the newspaper...
    6. Take your dog for a walk where there are other dogs, and ask the owners for tips, and suggestions.

  • That's a small budget, but there are classes sometimes by your local dog clubs.. We have one that's not far from us that's like $80 for 6 weeks. You aren't going to get a title or anything, but it'll give you your basics.
You should call your local SPCA too... They adopt out dogs and I am positive that they would have someone that they would be willing to recommend.. They want dogs staying in homes, I am sure they would be happy if everyone wanted to do some training with their dog.

Or you could buy a few good books, or videos.. Are you the DIY type or you need the classes?

  • It depends on where you live, but as stated already PetSmart and Petco have classes less than $100 for 6-8 weeks. You should be able to do a online yellow page search to find local dog trainers. Personally I've taken my Australian Shepherd to classes since she was 11 weeks old and each class that we took was $90 (we took 3 and will soon begin our agility foundation classes).

It's nice to see someone wanting to be involved with their dog. It is truly a bonding experience for you and your dog as well. I highly recommend it! Maybe visit a class first, just as an observer, to see how many people attend, what types of things they are training the dogs on, etc. Anyone who won't allow you to stop in (even if it's not for the entire class) I wouldn't bother with. If they absolutely won't allow that, set up a meeting with the trainer/teacher to discuss what's taught, how long the course is, etc.

Hope this helps! Good luck with your dog!
