Dog Health Questions: My 5 month old German Shepherd bites and nips at my feet?

When I stroke her she bites at my hand and sometimes bites my feet for no reason. I know she's only playing but those teeth are like needles!

How do I get her to stop? Signing up for one of those dog training classes is not an option at the moment.

Dog Training Part I

  • She is teething. Those needles are growing from her gums, and it hurts her very bad, so she bites things to ease the pain. And like you said, she's playing with you and doesn't realize how sharp those teeth of hers are. She will grow out of it in a few months, but for now, buy her a hard chew-toy to teethe on, and be patient. She'll be normal in no time. :]

  • when our german shepard was doing that as a pup,we would stop petting him and walk away saying No or Naughty. Then give him a kong ball or tennis ball to chew on. It did take time but the effort was worth it. After all hes just a pup and doing what pups do. And as the owner we did we needed to do ,train him. Each time he stops chewing/nipping tell him good boy and give him a little treat.

  • Mouthing and biting are natural, normal behaviors; all puppies do it. During teething (generally starting around four months), the urge to mouth is extra powerful because it feels good on your pups' tender gums.

Mouthing is an unavoidable part of canine development--it's how young dogs learn about their world. Fortunately, by consistently signaling to your pup that biting is unacceptable, and giving her playtime with other dogs who'll teach her the same lesson, she'll learn to use her jaws very gently.

  • bUY HER A CHEW TOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • A GSD has a natural instinct to herd, which is part of what she is doing when she is nipping at your feet, which can be funny until you have a 90+ lb adult GSD that still does this!! (Been There!) A great way to get her to stop is to say ouch and no. Then do not play with her a few min. Also the use of a water bottle, (not water gun) and when she does this squirt a quick shot on her hind end at the base of the tail or nose, whichever works the best. Also is a great time to teach her simple obedience yourself.
