Dog Health Questions: How does one go about starting a dog training/boarding/grooming business? What would the first 3 steps be?

I don't know anything about business plans and how to go about it - we don't have a lot of "start up" money to hire other people to do stuff for us. I just want to start small and then go from there. We already board/train some dogs - worried about liability and how to go about insuring that there isn't an incident that would cause us to lose our house! These are just some of the issues.

Avoiding the phrase “I don't have time...”, will soon help you to realize that you do have the time needed for just about anything you choose to accomplish in life.

  • It's all research. Contacting companies that already are in this business in parts of the same state that you live would be a good start. Probably start with 3-4 companies. You aren't infringing on their customer base, and talking shop... but first you want to know:

    1) Who is your local competition?

    2) How many people in your area have pets that would be within a reasonable distance from you?

    3) What facilities will you need?
    ____

after that, contact those companies I spoke of earlier and ask:

    a) What prices are they charging for the services you want to offer?

    b) Ask your questions regarding insurance

    c) How many customers do they handle per month? These should give you a start, to help you determine what your next steps should be. Good luck.
