Dog Health Questions: Basic Dog Training Methods?

I just rescued a abandoned dog and she seems to be house broken but I am having a tough time keeping her on a leash, begging for food and sitting. Does anyone have any good advice to help me out or direct me to a good dog training web site? Also i am having trouble getting her out in the backyard as well.

Dog Training - The Reward Way

Recommended Answer:
It is kind of early to try to train her...try loving her and talk to your vet about a good training school.....also, something bad may have happened in a yard. Go with her and stay with her and take her on a tour of the backyard to let her see it is safe.

Dog Training Programs - How Do You Decide?

  • I trained my rescued dog using clicker training. Basically you first teach them a behavior is good by marking it with a click and then a treat. You then label the behaviours with words once they get it down.

    try www.clickerlessons.com

for the backyard thing you can't reinforce her fear by babying her whenever she gets afraid. Throw her on a leash inside the house and then sprint out the door. She'll have no choice but to follow. Once outside give her some treats and lovin.

  • have a lot of treats like dog food every time she does good you give her a treat and she will learn quick. as far as the leach thing get a choker and put it on her lead her out side in the yard and give her a treat , begging just say no or bad dog or you can call a vet and ask questions

  • First give her plenty of time to bond with you and know she now has a home. Then check out petsmarts trainning course. It is usually fairly good for just simple obdeience trainning.

  • Good for you! Start training right away. Join the yahoo group Clicker Solutions to learn about clicker training.

  • I agree with everyone here. You need to time to bond with the dog. The yard thing has probably beena bad experience for her in the past. Do go with her and let her know you are not leaving her. Bring lots of treat and toys and play, play, play!!! Once you have her trust, you can begin training. Rescued dogs are great. Good for you!!! Good luck
