Dog Health Questions: Good dog training book for an Aussie?

I have a 9 week old, male, Australian Shepherd and I want to know what a good training book is. I'm not looking to train him to herd so I want a book that will give me a lot of training advice on activities to replace herding.

oh, cesar milan has a new book out. well he has a few out.but last year he put one out on how to raise a well behaved puppy!! it's awsome.. he has more, that are also very VERY good to read and learn from. also, patricia McConnell, has a few books out too. she at one time had a show on the animal planet channel..i have both people's books and they are soo helpful, but seriously, look into cesar milan's books. he is the dog whisperer.

Understanding Dog Training Schools

  • I've owned and trained shelties and collies for many years and have all the titles you can get in obedience. Herding dogs are probably the easiest of all the breeds to train, but there is no training method that is only geared to the Herders.
Control Unleashed is probably one of the best of the training books, but if you go to www.dogwise.com you will find all of the best training books on that site. Pick any one of them as they are all great, however you can't beat obedience training in a class atmosphere, especially with a herding dog that needs socialization more than many other breeds.
Good luck, Aussies are a wonderful breed but very challenging when training for titles.

  • Please, please, please do not use any of CM's methods on a Aussie! I would personally go for one of Karen Pryor's books on clicker training. (Or any other good clicker trainer.) Aussies do well with clicker training.
