I was thinking about buying this... I have two large , rowdy dogs and would love to hear if anyone has tried this training program... Does it work or is a waste of money?

4 Tips To Successful Obedience Dog Training

Recommended Answer:
There is nothing special about this. It is using negative reinforcement instead of positive. It comes with a modified prong collor. It's plastic!

The concept is you use the "freedom line" which is just a piece of nylon with a swivel snap. Hooked to the leash
you give a command and use hand signal and you put the dog in the position. If he responds he gets praise, If the dog does not obey then you "tug" on the leash meaning you give it a correction and put him in the desired position.

Even though the DVD says they are focused on positive reinforcement that is not correct if you are giving a dog a correction on a "modified" prong collar for not doing what it is supposed too.

I use prong collars trainging my dogs but I do not use them to get them into a desired position. I use treats to teach the sit, down, etc. It came be done regardless of a dogs age. Without doing the techniques in this system.

It is a waste of money. Find a trainer in your area be patient and consistant and you will get the same results for less money.
Or got buy the book positive dog training for dummies and a $15 prong and you will get the same results.

Considerations When Buying Dog Training Equipment

  • For some stupid reason my sister tried it and worked, but when my auntie tried it, it didn't work for her dogs! So I think it might work, but on Other hand it might be a waste of money.

    I don't really think i helped!
    SORRY!

  • i purchased this. the video is informational about the training with the equipment. i like the video and collar. it says to use gloves with the leashes incase the dog may become aggressive its for your protection and its cause of the leash to. i used the leash with gloves and it still hurts. i use my own leash for this now. i do like this. i only did a couple things from the video with my dog and it worked and she became a lot better with the down command. i point to the ground and say "down" and she obeys me. she never used to do that command. i have not used this as much as i would like to. i would like to spend time with my dog more using this. i think you should try it out. and isnt there a guarantee for it so if you dont like it you should be able to return it. i would give it a try!

    good luck training your dogs.

  • Are you talking about the Don Sullivan one?

His program appears to based on outdated dominance theory training. You'd be better to use science based positive training methods. Look for books and videos by Jean Donaldson, Patricia McConnell and Ian Dunbar to name a few.

Pam Dennison's Idiots Guide to Positive Dog Training is a good book to read on training.

For all those who will say watch Cesar who also uses outdated dominance theory ASVAB has just released its statement on this. ASVAB being the The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior.
