Dog Health Questions: Dog training- dog runs away a lot- help?

my dog likes to run away. As soon as she sees a door open she'll run. If shes off her leash she'll run and even if i call her she wont stop. I had to chase her for blocks once. How can i teach her its not ok to run away or go anywhere without me.

I agree with above. Teach her obedience first, to come, to stay and sit, these are very important and may actually save your dog in a situation. When you chase the dog he thinks you are playing with him, always run away from the dog, they usually start chasing you, thinking its a game. Never allow your dog to run without a leash or fence. I would get an invisable fence, it will do wonders for your dog but you msut train them to it not just expect it. Walk the dog around your boundaries everyday and say boundaries. Put him on a long lead next to the boundary, play with him and if he walks past it say boundaries and bring him back, reeat this and he should learn but if he's stubborn get an invisable fence. Dog Training - Teach Your Dog the Sit Command at Once

• 1) Don't have her offleash when she's not in a fenced area until you have perfected recall.
  
  2) Teach her to Sit and Stay. Then teach her to Sit and Stay before you open the door.
  
  3) Chasing her is a game, and punishing her when you catch her only teaches her that "getting caught is bad".


• You will have nothing but trouble with a dog that has no training! You must get it obedience training say @ PetSmart or a local dog rescue... and the "Dog Whisperer" on TV is a great inspiration as to what amazing things that can be done with dogs to make them mind, Go to the library and get some videos, CD's. books to help you!! I had dogs that I couldnt house-break, that would run away and wouldnt come when called...they either got lost permanently, went to the Pound, hit by car, or given away cuz they chewed everything or pee'd etc.
  If I had to do it all over again, I would read a lot of books on Dog Training!! Even if the class costs some bucks, it would be worth it. Sometimes the Parks and Recreation host dog training....GOOD luck and take care of your dog, she depends on you to keep her safe. You dont need to be out chasing the dog, you could get hit by a car or fall down, so be sure you know how to control her. Taking proper care of a dog isnt cheap. and they dont come with an owners manual.

  1. Put a prong collar and a 6 ft leash on the dog
  2. Tell the dog to "stay"* in your kitchen. (if the dog doesn't know stay you must train him stay)
  3. Have a friend pretend to leave the house, at this moment also call the dog's name.
  4. If she decides to run to the door your friend can block her way.
  5. Grab the leash and give her a STRONG correction and say "come!"
  Be firm, don't yell at the dog.
  6. Keep correcting the dog as you return to your original spot.
  
  By the time you reach your original spot, the dog should be pretty unhappy, if you gave the proper correction (which is very strong). Now give her a great amount of praise. Keep doing this and increase the distraction. During this time it's good to put the dog on a long 30ft. lead when training outside so if she does decide to bolt, you can catch her easily. The correction has to be severe again, for the dog to learn. Correct her the same way, giving repeated corrections until you reach the original spot. But remember to give a large amount of praise afterwards.
