Dog Health Questions: Dog training question...?

I live in a very rural community, and the closest dog obidience class i can find is over an hours drive from my house. My pup is very well behaved but i want to do everything i can to ensure that he stays that way. Are there any DVDs or books you can recomend that would help me do it myself? Any other advice you can offer would be great. Thanks.

Can I Train My Dog Without a Dog Training Course?

  • Sure. There is useful information all over the internet. You can try the site below for some introductory lessons. They also have a program that has helped lots of dog owners.

Be aware that the most important part of dog training is your consistency. It take a lot of energy and patience to train your dog. If you maintain constant positive reinforcement, sooner or later your dog will understand you're the boss (The Alpha Dog).

  • I like the way Ceasar(?) Millan explains things. His series is called The Dog Whisperer. You can also try user-groups from Google Groups or Yahoo Groups for feedback. If you can afford it some training programs train the dog for you for a period of several weeks then bring you back out to revisit what they taught your dog. You can also check on Amazon and check ratings from other customers.

  • DVDs won't help you -- the dog and you need to be in an obedience class - I have trained dogs for over fifty years and I STILL take them to obedience classes -- it is good for them and for me. One hour is nothing -- it is one time a week. Your pup is only 'well behaved' when it is comfortable and there is nothing stressing it -- if something occurs he will blow you off.

  • In my opinion, Cesar Milian "The Dog Whisperer" should only be used for dogs with behavioral problems.

Puppies don't have problems, they just need to learn "manners".
I think using those methods on a puppy would be like sending a kindergartener to a maximum security prison to learn to read.

    My pics for books:
    Puppy Pre-school
    Dog Tricks for Dummies
    They're smarter than you think
Anything written by "The Monks of New Skeet". They have a few out.

See if you can find "Uncle Maddy's" videos. He has some good solid tips on getting a dog to behave gently.

  • its me or the dog by victoria stilwell. it is a positive reinforcment book. ceaser millian is ok but some of his methods can cause more harm than good such as 'flooding' which means forcing a dog to be somewhere or do something they are afraid of to force them to get over their fear. honestly it doesnt work. if ur afraid of spiders and someone shoved u in a room w/ a bunch of spiders it wouldnt cure ur fear. also there is a book called the loved dog by tamra gellar. she trained oprah and jennifer garner's dogs. she has good philosophy about normal training but not potty training. hands down either book victoria stilwell writes is golden. also look at the book list on the link below. that is where my dog is trained and these are the recomended books.

  • The best in my experience is Cesar Millan and he has a web page.www.cesarmillan.com I have all his books and tapes and I enjo watching him work. He really understands what dogs are thinking.

  • First congratulations on being a responsible pet owner. Check out the Dog Whisperers web site. He has lots of information and links to sites. I believe he has some DVD's as well.
