Dog Health Questions: Dog book/reading recommendations for newbie dog enthusiast?

I have owned many dogs, but have recently become more interested in dog training, animal behavior, and the human-dog bond and interaction. I dream of turning these interests into a career at sometime in the distant future. For now I am looking for recommendations for dogs on the subject. I've read some of the big ones (Pat McConnell, Suzanne Clothier, Cesar Milan, Jon Katz etc that are popular recently). I am looking for diverse views--whether I agree with them or not I'd like to get as much information as possible!
I am not specifically interested in obedience, but more in general dog-human relationships and communication. Also information on agility, tracking and curbing and working with dog aggression interest me. So put your dog thinking caps on and dig through your libraries!! Thanks

Dog Training Basics: 3 Golden Rules

Recommended Answer:
Good, you have McConnell, ... search out Turid Rugaas... hard to find, but very gentle. And Karen Pryor, the originator of clicker training.

Katz is interesting.

Ray & Lorna Coppinger are respected and controversial.

And William Koehler - The Koehler Method Of Dog Training
One of the first books, harsh, unenlightened, and wrong... but you can learn a lot, if you get around the punishment methods. I worked with someone trained by Koehler. He was very harsh with aggressive dogs - It was painful to watch.

But with normal, family pets, he was a natural and as gentle as any modern methods, with an intuitive gift of reading what are now called calming signals.

Dog Training Hand Signals - 2 Important Commands You Can Teach Today

  • I'd check your local library. I know mine has several. Read many and decide what works best/makes sense to you. I liked "Cesar's Way" personally.

  • Guard dog training by Bill Koehler and Monks of new skeet are good training books.

  • If you go to Borders or Barnes and Noble they always have a ton of books exactly like what you're looking for. They have a lot of fun books too (for instance I've picked up a Dog Treat Baking Book to bake your own healthy treats and Dog Training for Dummies). There's a large dog book section that I would definitely look through.

  • I have read several books. The One by Patricia McConnell, I believe was "The Other End of the Leash," I know I read it, but don't remember it. I also read Culture Clash, which is ok, but I didn't agree with too much. The is also "The Dog Whisperer" and this one isn't by Cesar, "The Dog Listener," but some of the best are by the Monks of New Skete. They have three books out based on the German Shepherds that they breed and the training that is done by Brother Christopher at there monistary in Cambridge, NY. "How to be Your Dog's Best Friend," "The Art of Raising a Puppy," and "I & Dog." The only book I did not agree with was Culture Clash, and the only reason for this is because at the beginning of the book he states that the old saying "There is no such thing as a bad dog, just bad owners" is nothing more than a myth. I have worked with several different dogs while I was in rescue, aggressive, timid, and hyper. The only problem I have is with the owners of these dogs. Check out these books and let me knwo what you think.
