Dog Health Questions: Helo with dog training.....?

I have a 55 pound pitbull. He is friendly and calm when just around those he knows. However, when around new people, new surroundings, and new dogs, he gets so overly excited and anxious he is out of control and hard to handle. Specifically he is hard to control on a leash, he jumps on people (not to bite), and gets himself so worked up he cant stop panting. I was wondering if anyone had any tips or suggestions on how to correct these behaviors as I am leaving for school in the fall and want to take him with me however it would be a handful if he behaves like this everyday. Thanks.

Sounds like private lesson time. They'll work with you and your dogs behavior around new people and new dogs. You'll learn how to handle your dog with confidence and security in these new and "exciting" situations.

6 Dog Training Tips For a Well Trained, Well Behaved Pet

  • Find a cheap trainer and get him in advanced classes.

  • if you have friends that are willing to help you with this there are some things you can do on your own. Like tell your friends when he jumps up to turn their backs at him, he is seeking attention this way and as long as he gets it he will not stop this behavior. once he realizes this isn't getting him anywhere put him on a leash and have them practice this in new areas. It is hard for dogs to make connections, so you;ll have to continue doing this in lots of situations.

But you should meet with a trainer to continue this training and for other methods.

  • ABC recently wrote an article outlining tips and tricks for dog training (I found a portion of the article doing a Google search). It seems pretty straightforward and offers about 13 or so steps to help train your dog. Also, if you aren't willing or able to enroll him in obedience school, then there are a lot of pretty cheap resources online like ebooks or DVDs. My in-laws used some home dog training techniques from Cesar Millan to train their boxer and I can't believe how well trained he is now. He's still very energetic but he knows what's acceptable and what's not. Here's the blog with the ABC excerpt.
