Dog Health Questions: Dog training tips please?

I have a Chihuahua. Shes is 4 years old. ( I'm a bit late) I want to teach her like sit stay roll over. And stuff like that. The problem is that when i have a treat in my hand to train her she gets all jumpy and excited. So does anybody know any good tips on how to train her and how to keep her calm. Also whenever we are outside and a car comes she chases after it. Can that be solved too? Best answer gets 10 points. :)

Dog Training - Avoiding Common Training Mistakes

Recommended Answer:
First off you are right she is it is a little late but not too late., I feel any dog of any age can be trained if done correctly.
What you will need:
Your dog
Her reward
Collar and leash
time, patients, and consistency
For training her to be more calm: Talk in a calm voice. This means don't raise you voice You need to also make sure to never ever give her a treat unless she does what you want. So keep the treats out but don't let her have one until she stays calm. This would also work a lot easier if you have he on a leash. With the leash keep her attached to you or something stable and once she is calm (sits, lays down, just stops bouncing off the walls) treat her
For these I'll find videos to attach so it make more sense.
Once you got her calm you can start teaching her some new tricks. For sit you make sure she is calm Hold the treat above her head and move it back towards her tail. Say "Sit" while doing this. She should sit right down. Imedently reward her and say "Good sit" not "good girl" make sure you use the word sit.
For lay down you need her in the sit postion and then put the treat down between her front feet and slowly move the treat towards you. while doing this say "down" lay down" or whatever word you want her to know. And again said "good down" or whatever word you choose.
For roll over have her in the "down" pose and then put the treat by her nose and slowly move it around to her side and over her back. She should roll over. and say it while she does it and again "good roll over" when she completes the move.
For stay for my dogs I started with "wait". I put a treat on the floor in front of them and told them to wait and every time they went for the treat I either pulled it back and lightly pushed their head back or used my hand to block them from the treat (this is much easier when they are sitting.) Then i started to tell them to wait and i would walk away. if they went for the treat i would say "wait" and they usually jump back as though to say "i wasnt doing anything". I would go father and make them wait longer.I go them up to10min. I can come back the they will still be in the same spot just waiting (treat still there).
Always remember to reward and same "good _____" whatever trick they did. soon you can even slowly wean them off the treats. Also always remember to be calm since she is so hyper. Clicker training is a good method to also use. Just do everything the same but litterly as soon as she does her trick click the clicker and treat her. it just breaks her attention and once she learns that that click means a treat she will also learn that that click means what she just did was what you wanted. you can go to any petstore for a clicker.. They cost no more that 5 dollars.
Also again make sure that everyone is training her and doing everything the same. Down to the words you use. If you want her to lay down to the word "DOWN" make sure everyone says "down" not "lay down" just atleast until she learns what down means.
As for her chaseing cars I have never had to train my dogs to not chase cars but the only thing I can think of is go out with her and distract her and Praise her when she pays attention to you and not the car. Then slowly allow her to see one car at a time, and everytime that one car you want her to see come by allow her to see it and then say "leave it" and try to redirect her attention and if she redircts her attention say "good leave it". Once she gets that down on one car do it for 2 then 3 and so on. Do this for 10-15 mins a day.
more tips:
Training should be short but sweet. I would only train 10-15min at a time and do that twice a day other wise you both will get too stressed. Also start with one trick. Stick with that one untill she learns it. once she learns it you move on but ALWAYS start the training sessions with a review.
If this sounds hard I'm not going to lie it can be pretty hard for some dogs. It takes time and alot of patients you have to make sure to NEVER raise your voice or anything to show her you are getting stressed. Once you start getting stressed just end the session.
Dont give her treats unless she does somthing for them. she is going to have to learn that treats aren't free. you work for your money which you use for your food. Have her work for her treats. ("going out"" always deserves a treat).
A good tip if you choose to click train is to let the dog learn the clicker means treat. Just get the dogs attention and the click the clicker and give her a treat. Repeat this afew times until you think she get ii
This is alot of info and I may have forgotten or didnt explain somthing if you have any more questions you can email me heathahforsure@yahoo.com

Why One Size Does Not Fit All In Dog Training

  • OK sit down with your dog and hold a high value treat in your hand and present it toward your dog if he goes to steal it close your hand. If he then tries mugging your hand just keep it closed and don't say anything just let him keep trying. When he stops and with a older dog that has never done this it might take 5-10 minutes just open your hand if he tries to steal it again close your hand. when he moves away open the hand if he tries to steal it close hand. after a bit you should be able to open the hand and hopefully he will stay sitting long enough for you to give him the treat for sitting away and sitting nicely. Basically you want to teach the dog self control and to move away and sit nice gets the treat, if he tries mugging you he doesn't get the treat.

  • Put a chain on her so she does not get hit.As far as training, when she gets excited just wait calmly and tell her to sit.Use had signs if you have to.If she does praise her and say wait.If she waits give her the treat,if not you wait on her.The best way to keep her calm is through exercises. They may be small but they have a lot of energy.Take her for walks and play with her often to stimulate her and ware her out.Rolling over is something you have to get from someone else.Hope this helped, good luck.

  • Hi, I see you need some Tips and tricks and a guide to dog training,
my friend had great success using the Dog training Academy. And he is delighted he has a really happy well trained dog.

Look and see what you think.

  • Enroll in an obedience class. You will learn the basics of training. Your dog will learn how to learn. Dogs should be allowed off leash unless they have a 100% dependable recall. You may need to hire a private trainer to work with you and the dog on the recall.

  • Get a crate for an area for the dog to have den and create a schedule for exercise and feeding.
