Dog Health Questions: An Ideal dog for me to have..?

Ok:
I am out for 7+ plus on weekdays but would have someone once or twice to let it out and there would be another dog there, but this other dog does not like to play or snuggle etc but she is extremely friendly just timid and not lively or active.
4 hours on weekends but sometimes it would come with us
2 walks a day most day but sometimes it would just get one, maybe once a month it wouldn't get any. But this wouldn't often happen.
One that likes to play but not all the time, will play fetch for maybe between 5 Min's and 25 Min's before getting bored.
One that will also just sit and watch you or sit on your lap
A reasonably small dog but not Chihuahua size, bigger than that! One that enjoys walks and looks forward to going out but doesn't constantly crave it
One that will also run sometimes too
One that gets along great with people, children and other animals
Maybe likes swimming as we live near a river but not essential.
One that generally lives until at least 10
One that is reasonably easy to train and would like dog training classes
One that enjoys fuss and attention
One that will hopefully play with other dogs

Ok, If you name the breed I will do all the researching so no need to include info, the best answer will be theone I think most suited to my lifestyle one I have looked it up.

It doesn't need all the above points but most of them would be good :) If there are any above points it doesn't match please say. But still say the dog!

I entered all of your criteria into a dog search engine that matches you to dogs that fit your lifestyle. All of the breeds listed below matched your criteria from between 96%-100%. The breeds at the top of the list are 100% and they percentage decreases as you go down the list. Hope this helps so that you can do research and find whats best for you.

The Shiba Inu listed under the 100% list I actually have personal experience with. They are a medium sized breed but not too large. They have a nice balance between play and rest.

Schutzhund Dog Training Is Not So Difficult - Read These Top Tips

  • well from your answer it seems like you would want maybe an italian greyhound or a similar dog, whatever dog you pick, according to your schedule you should paper train it.

I agree that a shitz-su would be great.

  • Hi

Based on your schedule, an older pup, or young adult would be a better fit than a new puppy.

    Breeds that come to mind

French Bulldog - swimming could be an issue.
    Miniature Schnauzer
    Brussels Griffon

Best of luck in finding your new friend,
    Rebel

  • I would recommend a Maltese. But they are fragile. That might affect your decision since you have children. The rest fully describes my dog though.

  • I would have to go with

Golden Retriever, very friendly dogs with good energy.

My female retriever only weighed 60 lbs.

  • Golden Retriever

  • a west highland terrier or cairn terrier

  • If we could only have children with such standards!!

  • English Springer Spaniel - meets most of your criteria. Mine loves to sit on our lap; medium sized; runs; is great with unfamiliar people, children & other dogs; loves the water; life span is 12-15; housebroken in 3 weeks.

I would also recommend a female golden retriever. They are on the smaller size and fit your criteria.

  • I'd go for a miniature poodle. They are very active and would appreciate a walk everyday. They are playful, too. They enjoy the outdoors. Poodles are very friendly dogs and are good with kids and other pets. Poodles are very athletic dogs. They were bred to hunt. They can also swim. They are the second smartest dog in the world, so they are very easy to train. They like having something to do, so they would enjoy dog training classes. They are friendly, so the like attention. They are good with other dogs.

  • I really think a good match would be a Shih-Tzu...the only thing that doesn't match perfectly is the swimming part.
I have one and he matches all of those catagories perfectly. If you don't like the long, flowy show hair version you can always keep them with a puppy cut (like mine) which is easier to mantain. He's never had any medical probelms either. He is pure bred.

EDIT: We leave him at home about as much as you would and he hasn't gone to the restroom in the house since he was a little puppy. (He's 9yrs old now)

Some of the dogs below do need to be walked and are anxioius to go on walks which doesn't seem to fit your criteria...but all are great dogs.

    EDIT:
I was going to suggest a French Bulldog too but mine is SUPER anxious to go on walks, likes playing for hours then will go to sleep, they CAN NOT swim...they can drown if you let them try, he is nice to younger kids and older people but is hyper and almost knocks them down when they walk in the door. But they are ADORABLE when they go to sleep. They sleep like another person with you in the bed. They can have bad respiritory problems, they're very expensive and have gas/snore a lot...hah.

I also agree that getting a puppy is not good for your life style...a dog 7-10 months or older would be best.
