Dog Health Questions: What is a good book to buy if you need to know how to choose a good dog, train it, and overall care for it?

I really want a dog, and I need to know how to adopt a good one! I need to know how to train it, feed it correctly, groom it, walk it, etc. If anyone knows about a book that is under 50 dollars that tells me about all of this, I would like to know about it and where to buy it.

Professional Dog Training - The Easy Road in Dog Obedience Training

I think adopting a dog is a wonderful thing. There are so many dogs that need rescued. The first thing I would do is research which dog would be a perfect match for you and your lifestyle. You can search this on google.

Then once you see the personalities and demands of certain breeds...you can decide what works best for you.

Only then I would start searching for a dog.

If there is a particular breed that you find interesting, you can even go to that breeds rescue site and see if there are foster parents that are keeping the dog while trying to find a placement home.

Another option is to check out the animal shelter. But really be careful here. You need to know what exactly your getting. Spend a lot of time with your future friend before taking him home. Even go back a second day and see if there is still a connection.

I think it is so important to be a good trainer especially if you adopt a pet. You really need to know in advance what your up against with training.

You can take your dog to training sessions, at pet stores or even with personal trainers..... I did all of this when I brought my puppy home 3 years ago. Most of them only taught basic commands like sit, stay ...etc.

After watching endless hours of The Dog Whisperer......I decided that training Barley myself would be more cost effective as well as rewarding.

So, I researched on line, bought a few books and began working on the other things that were real issues such as jumping up on people and bolting out the door whenever it was opened.

I did find a few, but one really made an impact and I'm still using some of the techniques today.

Dog Training & Dog Obedience Guide

  • Animal Planet dot com, Dogs101.
Has info on breeds, thier health, care, exersise needs, personality, etc.

  • Itg has been decades since I've bought a general information book like that but you can find an excellent selection of all kinds of dog books at Dogwise, http://www.dogwise.com

  • A Member Of The Family by Cesar Millan (aka Dog Whisperer). He also has several others that you may find helpful along the way.

  • There are so many books out there. I would go to your local Barnes and Nobel or Borders and go to their pet/animal section. If you want you can do a search on Amazon which will also turn up many results.

  • You don't necessarily have to buy a book. You can go to dogbreedinfo.com and there are tons of breeds on there. You can read about temperament, grooming, their adult size, origins, etc. As far as feeding, most dog food brands have a feeding chart on the bag according to weight. If you have a younger dog you want to take that amount and break it into several small meals a day. This should continue for dogs prone to bloat such as great danes, as well as having a raised food/water dish. As far as training, you only need to find out what motivates your dog - treats, toys, praise or a combination of those. Each dog is different and learns at their own pace, some can learn sit in a matter of minutes but be baffled by the down command. Training isn't about teaching your dog tricks, it's about building a common language. The links I included are a quiz to match you with several different breeds, a web page with info on those breeds, a guide to seeing what temperament a puppy has, and how to teach different tricks. So good luck to you with your pup or dog!
