Well, i have a Labrador who's mum was a lab and quater collie so he has a little bit of collie in him. And i got him for a present because i wanted a dog for agess. i am now 14 and he is 2years old.

But he just barks like CRAZY when he sees another dog - no matter what size or gender or anything. He's uncontrolable when it comes to other dogs. & all the fur spikes up on his back and along his spine. It's like hell if you pass another dog.

But he is absolutley fine when we go on walks with other dogs, he's like a different dog. He will just walk along beside it. But even then if you are walking with another dog and then you seen another dog he will bark like mad.

It's confusing because he is so adorable and well behave at home. He is extremely clever as well. He really loves people and is very sociable.

We have tried dog training classes when he was younger but it was a nightmare and we used to dread going.

Has anyone ever had a dog like this?
Any ideas as to what to d

i had same problem....get an empty bottle of washing up liquid make sure its rinsed out, fill with water and when he go to bark squirt it at him,not in eyes though..i did it 3 times and he stopped!
also pull lead up and say no before squirting he will need distracting, plus when you walk him make sure he is not walking in front of you....if he is then he will think he is in charge

Top 10 Successful Dog Training Tips

  • he ,may be overly protective of you

  • You need a dog behaviourist to help show you how to handle him. He is feeling that he needs to protect you all and himself. It is workable with time and patience. The best kind of behaviour modification is with Tellington TTouch in my experience (animal care professional). Check out www.tellingtontouch.com and go to the Practitioners section. See if one is close by. Very gentle and understanding. Hope that helps.

  • I have not had any experience with this but i will tell you that dogs can pick up on humans emotions. When a dog is around don't expect your dog to go crazy or he will. when you see another dog coming get your to sit, or lay down. if he doesn't want to stay laying then step on his collar and make him. don't talk to him, that will make him think he is doing something good (like protecting you) once he stops barking tell him good boy and give lots of praise. it will get easier. he is probably trying to protect you. if at any time you feel uncomfortable with holding him down stop. take it a little at a time.

  • He is just exighted and he probably just wants to be with other dogs. The hair that rises up are called his hackles. They rise when a dog either gets aggressive or wants to play but cant. Just try a bark collar and that will probably teach him not to bark at all.

  • well you need to be patient with him not shout but he sounds adorable.

  • If you know anyone who owns a dog, get them socialized together. Then walk your dog and purposefully pass your friend's dog. When he starts to bark take him close to the other dog so he sees the dog as friend, not foe. Try this a few times and see if it gets better, if it doesn't then ask a vet.

  • Please consider going vack to dog training classes. It could be a wealth of help for you and the dog. How about getting private lessons from a trainer? One on one. He needs some professional training and they can structure the lessons for your dog's problems. Also, try this website. Good luck.

  • He needs to be socialized with other dogs. He's an only dog, right? Well he doesn't know how to act around other dogs and that makes him scared. Do you have friends with dogs? Can they bring their dogs (one at a time) by your home on a regular basis? When they do, don't be afraid. Let the dogs sniff and even growl at each other, they are in your home and supervised. On your home turf, your dog should feel less threatened by having a visitor. Or take it to a well-fenced back yard. If you keep your dog on-leash during the first part of socializing, DO NOT pull back if he starts to bark or growl. Let the leash go limp. Pulling on the leash when your dog begins to growl or bark will make it worse because your dog will think that YOU are scared too. Once your dog knows how to 'be a dog' he will be just as happy to be with and interact with other dogs.
