A Long Tradition of Dog Training

Recommended Answer:
You need to either get him into doggie day care or have a doggie caretaker come in duringthe afternoon.

Chihuahuas are companion animals. That's what they were bred for. They need someone around for a good portion of the day.

Continuing to leave him home alone all day is likely going to give you a very very unhappy, destructive, badly behaved dog.

Get the Most From Your Dog With These 5 Dog Training Tips

  • A really good dog trainer will advise you that using puppy pads in the house will only confuse your dog. It will take a long time to train if your gone during the day, but it will happen. Be patient and do what you can when your home. That's all you can do. Try confining your puppy during the day and taking your puppy out as soon as you get home. The ideal way is to use a crate that is only big enough for your puppy to stand up and turn around in.

  • Of course it would be best to hire someone to come mid day to help exercise and relieve this pup,,,but here are some other ideas:
I would not crate him for that length of time, but you can gate off the kitchen or bathroom. Cover the entire floor with puppy pads - NO MISTAKES. Be sure there are plenty of puppy puzzles for mind stimulation, an open crate to sleep in and water. Free reign in a home encourages the dog to learn very bad habits. Control the dog in a puppy proof area while you are gone.
    Good luck

  • ummm well he is a very small dog so try finding a small space you can block off but that he can get away from his urine and fesces and close him in it until you get back. use pads in this space and he may get so used to using it on them when your gone eventually you'll be able to leave him roaming

  • I'm sorry to say, but it seems like you may have to crate him while you're gone at work...MOST dogs won't soil their crate, as it is their den...You might try it for a few days...Also, please keep the radio or tv on while you're gone...A dog actually feels less lonesome if there are human voices around the house while you're gone....Good luck !

  • You should find a home with someone who isn't going to make him stay isolated without outdoor exercise for so long :( Dogs are social pack animals. When they are isolated, they do some pretty strange and destructive things.

  • Put your pet in a crate during the day and line the crate with the pee pad! All young pets need supervision until trained!

  • It sounds like you are leaving your pup loose when you are not at home.
Have you considered getting a pet crate, and putting him in there while you are away from home?
Dogs will not of their own choice "soil" where they sleep.

Many people feel that confining a dog to a crate is unkind. But actually a dog will think of a crate as his "den", his safe haven.
You need one that is just large enough for him to stand up and turn around. You can make a nice and comfy bed for him with some towels, blankets or small pillows.
You are not away from home an unreasonable amount of time. He will do just fine with a crate. When you get home and let him out, you can control where he "goes".
    Best of Luck to You!

  • First of all if he isn't neutered than he is marking his territory so that is the first thing you need to do. Next is to have him in a crate when you can't watch him.

  • Look into crate training. Don't give a dog that isn't housebroken run of the house.

And forget the pee-pads. They only confuse the dog and prolong the housebreaking process. Train him to only relieve himself outside.

  • Unfortunately you do have a dielema. Crateing him may be the answer. You could also try using a baby gate and keeping him only in one room, the kitchen or the bathroom, because they are usually hard floors u dont have to worry bout cleaning up carpets.
Im not a big fan of the pads so...
Maybe you could get a reliable neighbor kid to take him out for a quick walk. If you slowly legnthened the time daily, within a few months he will be old enough to hold it longer. Plus what kid doesnt need a few dollars for junk food!
Obviously-Be sure he goes out in the am before work and in the pm, when you get home. With a little extra attention while he is a pup you guys will be fine!
