A tip to you though: Should you want you dog to have a better temperament, always disturb him while he eats.
Do it playfully. Start with petting him on the head or back when he is digging in. Once he is used to this shift his bowl a little, to the point of moving it sideways by 6 inches and then push it back.
Eventually the dog will think anyone taking his food away is just playing with him.
All my dogs don't guard food or belonging. The worst thing to happen for a dog is when some children walk by or pick up something from the floor, the dog jumps and rushes over to growl. If you disturb your dog every time you feed him, he won't do that.
Apart from this, all you need to show your dog is praises for doing the right things and a harsh NO for doing something he is not allowed.
A puppy doesn't have good bladder control until he is 5 months old. After sleep, eating, playing he would have the tendency to go as that is the time when his intestines are in motion. So it is up to you to put him in the right spot at the right time.
Should he do it in the wrong place, clean the place well and rinse it with diluted vinegar to kill the smell. There is no need to spend a lot of money on all kinds of dog detergent.

I'm very happy you've decided to get a new dog,I suggest you please adopt a dog from a local shelter. That way it will already be trained for you and you don't have to worry about anything. But you have to think,Do you have a good enviroment for your dog?A big enough yard?enough time to play/exercise your dog?If you have answered yes to all these questions then go ahead and give it a shot,Good Luck ;) - I would go to a bookstore & look at alot of them & choose the one you like. Some have simpler directions & pictures. Go to Petsmart & Barnes & Noble. Don't buy in haste. Look Around. Look around for discount bookstores like Half Price Books. Sounds like you need the Dog Whisperer. Good Luck
- Caesar Mullan probably has a book out some where. He's good at training dogs. So I've been told.
- I believe in TOUGH LOVE. Spank the dog/cat/turtle/lizard/bird/hamster until they get it right.
