Dog Health Questions: What type of dog training would you recommend..?

I want to take my dog to a professional trainer but don't know what to look for when making the right decision. Also, is it more effective to take the class with your dog in group classes or to have boarding classes, where they keep the dog for a couple of weeks and train them and then you go back and they train you?.. I live in NJ and would like any recommendations if you have any..Thank you.

Do You Make These 4 Common Mistakes in Dog Training?

Recommended Answer:
I wouldn't recommend boarding classes at all. I suggest taking the dog to a group class or have private training sessions. I think positive reinforcement is the best route to go. Clicker training works especially well when teaching more complex commands or tricks. It amazes me how many thumbs down people have for suggesting positive reinforcement training. Do people honestly think that dogs shouldn't be trained with positive reinforcement and should only be trained with anger or discipline? Positive reinforcement really works. Just look at some of kikopup or JustJessie197's videos on youtube, you'll see how amazing positive reinforcement works, and the dogs are so happy!

Dog Training Career: Doing It and Loving It

  • It is best to go to classes weekly, with your dog. Professional trainers that keep your dog, are usually training Guard dogs. Plus, the expense is tremendous compared to classes with your dog. It also learns to respect YOU, not the Trainer. For puppy classes, I like the type that use treats at first, then you wean them off over the course of training, usually 8 weeks.

  • Most of the time, the owner needs as much training as the dog so I would suggest you go with the dog. As far as trainers go, you need to interview and see what their philosphy is and how you feel about it. Ask for references- past people who took the class whom you can contact. Some trainers will let you view a class in session. Good luck.

  • I agree with Haley. Positive reinforcement. Do not leave your dog with anyone. you won't know what is happening to your dog when you are not watching

Things you do NOT want to see in a trainer:
    leash corrections
pushing on the dog to teach sit
pulling on the dog to teach lay down
yelling at or scaring the dog
repeating stuff that is on TV - TV is for entertainment, not education
    alpha rolling, yanking, hanging
    shock collars
    choke chains
    prong collars

  • R+ based training.

If you're near St. Hubert's I would definitely recommend their classes. http://www.sthuberts.org/page.aspx?pid=4…

I've had the great opportunity to meet and attend Pia the director of training and behavior there and she's great!

  • Positive reinforcement and clicker training
