The best way to train dogs, people or anything else is through positive reinforcement training. In the dog world this is often referred to as clicker training, which is a form of positive reinforcement training in which you mark good behaviors with a click. Something else, like saying "yes" or "good" would accomplish the same thing. The basics of positive reinforcement are simple and easy to remember. Reinforce/reward good behaviors and they will naturally occur more often. Do not reinforce/ignore bad behaviors and they will naturally occur less often. This takes some practice, time and patience but will always work if you stick with it and will leave you and your dog much happier. Alternatively, trying to be "alpha" to a dog, yanking their leash, hitting them on the nose, etc will only damage your relationship with your dog and make their behavior worse. Do not buy into those misinformed techniques.

Dogs are very good at problem solving and understanding what you want if your give them the chance. Once they figure out the rules of positive reinforcement (many dogs figure out a clicker in a couple of minutes) it becomes a game and they enjoy learning new things and working for you. Thinking is also hard work and a tricky way to tire out your dog, which makes them less likely to release their pent up energy in inappropriate or destructive ways. Even though your boxer is young she can learn a lot. Just try to limit the length of the training sessions (only a couple of minutes initially) and have more of them throughout the day. That way you can maintain her interest and end on a high note before she gets bored or frustrated. Also ensure that the treats you use are rewarding enough (if she doesn't want them than there's no reason to work for them) but not too big or too much. For a puppy they should be roughly pea size and the amount of food you feed as treats should always be subtracted from the amount she gets in her meals to avoid overfeeding her.

put her on a leash and make sure the cats are secured with someone else. first your dog should be alone on a leash with you. give it one treat at a time and distract it giving it treats. Then bring the cat in. Dont make a big deal of it just continue to give the treats. at the first bark or leap towards the cats stop the treats and remove the cat. after the dog calms down try again. continiue this until the dog does not react and is comfortable with the cat very close.
this could take a lot of time so be patient.

Dog Health Questions: How do I politely tell my landlord to stop bugging me about my dog training methods?

My dog is almost 6 months old and at night and when NO one is physically in the house she is put in her crate. She is in the crate about 4 hours per day during the day when I'm at work. Otherwise she is out of the crate. She is a lab and for her safety I feel more secure knowing she is not getting into any trouble or chewing something she should not that is why she is put in the crate. I also have 3 cats and they are now just starting to adjust to the dog( we've had the dog for 2 1/2 months now). I walk my dog 3 times per day for 30 - 45 minutes each walk. She is allowed to run in the yard which I let her do. My landlord has said (not so nicely) that she thinks when someone is home the dog is in the crate which I have politely informed her the dog is only put in the crate when NO one is in the house. She also wants to know why I don't let my dog go to the doggie park. I have heard quite a few bad things about doggie parks and I would rather not have my dog go there. It's personal preference on my part. She also keeps telling me not to abuse the dog. I'm not abusing, neglecting or harming the dog in any way shape or form. During the hot weather we've had recently the dog (and cats) go in my daughters room where the A/C is and keep cool. How do I nicely tell my landlord to please let me raise the dog MY way? Her dog is misbehaved (jumps on people, doesn't listen at all) I'm trying to teach my dog NOT to jump on people, and my dog listens to me. Please no sarcastic responses.

1. Clicker or voice? Yes.

Look, it's not about a clicker. It's about a marker--something that explicitly, clearly MARKS at an exact point in time that the dog unequivocally associates with "you done good." About 99% of humans are incapable of EXACTLY matching their voice every time. They say "yes" but it's in a slightly higher pitch. Or louder. Or more drawn out. It's different in some way. But I use a clicker. And I use my voice. And other trainers have used a key-light (for a deaf deaf) and another used a thumbs up sign. SeaWorld trainers use whistles (since the click doesn't carry underwater). It's all the same--it's about a "marker". It's not that a clicker is magic, you need to "load" the clicker (so the dog associates the click with a reward and thus the click means "you done good" and you need to get the timing down PERFECTLY. Ditto with your voice. Or whatever you use to mark with. The reason that clickers work so well with dogs is that the clicker doesn't get louder or longer, it doesn't change smell, it only makes one sound. But humans change their expression, we focus on something different, we give off pheramones, we get louder or softer. And the dog gets a mess of signals in there, only one of which is the "yes" that we say. So it tends to get lost in the mess of other messages. Because dogs are more visual and olfactory based when it comes to humans--our voice commands and language comes in a distant third in their perceptual focus.

2. Read up on operant conditioning and behavior shaping and you'll find out all the answers to this issue as well as how to train your dog. But in the meantime, of course you can stop using the clicker, just like you can stop rewarding or stop using your voice.

Example: when I was training my dog to heel and not pull on the leash when walking, we'd walk 5 steps, I'd click and treat and praise. We stopped clicking at 5 steps and moved it to 8, then 10, then 15, then 20, then clicked when he stayed focused on me during the walk instead of going for the squirrel. And variable reinforcement also applies--research shows that you get a better response if you don't treat every time.

I wouldn't recommend boarding classes at all. I suggest taking the dog to a group class or have private training sessions. I think positive reinforcement is the best route to go. Clicker training works especially well when teaching more complex commands or tricks. It amazes me how many thumbs down people have for suggesting positive reinforcement training. Do people honestly think that dogs shouldn't be trained with positive reinforcement and should only be trained with anger or discipline? Positive reinforcement really works. Just look at some of kikopup or JustJessie197's videos on youtube, you'll see how amazing positive reinforcement works, and the dogs are so happy!

Dog Training Career: Doing It and Loving It

• It is best to go to classes weekly, with your dog. Professional trainers that keep your dog, are usually training Guard dogs. Plus, the expense is tremendous compared to classes with your dog. It also learns to respect YOU, not the Trainer. For puppy classes, I like the type that use treats at first, then you wean them off over the course of training, usually 8 weeks.

After all these dogs have owners (hopefully) so will will need to learn to deal with human personalities as well Believe me that part can be hard.

After my book work I had months of training in a shelter with rescuing and rehabilitating them so they could be adopted out, and then my last semester was with a mentor in my area and that is when I took my dog and she graduated with me as a Certified Therapy Dog.   I too am looking for a career in dog behavior, training, and nutrition. It all started when I got my shepherds. In the last couple of months, I have done private training through an experienced trainer who has 30+ years experience with shepherds and in rehab and schutzhund. Needless to say, I have learned a lot from him.
  
  I am currently going to school to get my associates degree as a vet tech. A vet tech degree can open MANY doors for you, as few degrees are actually companion animal specific, and few companion animal jobs require specific degrees. After I graduate, I plan on going on to get my bachelors degree in animal behavior. I would love to spend a few years doing field research on wolves. I believe their behavior and habits are a lot closer to dogs then most realize.
  
  Along the way, of course, I am looking for any job oppurtunities I can in the dog field. My trainer, for example, offers boarding as well, and he has hired all of his kennel techs as graduates from my school. Working under extremely experienced and knowledgable trainers is the fasted way to get your foot in the door. From there, do internships or paid assistant training jobs. Then work on doing full time trainer jobs.
  
  That is how I am looking at it. I'm sure there are many other ways. The key is experience and knowledge on dogs.EDIT: Just a clarification though, if you ever do become a trainer, be careful what you call yourself. You can not call yourself a behaviorist, for example, unless you actually have a degree in animal behavior. After I graduate my current school, I can be a trainer. After I get my bachelors degree in animal behavior, then I can call myself a behaviorist (and bring in the big bucks, lol)
