She's 7 months old.
But, very big.
She jumps up on you and everything.
They shelter gave us a DVD about training the dog.
What treats should I use?
not big ones, that will make it sick if it eats too many, those little treat ones. How should I go about being the "Alpha Dog"?
How did you train your dog?
I don't want to go to PetSmart or anything like that.
Thanks in Advance.

Or get books by Pat Miller, Pam Dennison, Turid Rugaas, Jean Donaldson, Patricia McConnell, or Ian Dunbar.
Treats of various sizes can be broken up into the teeny size appropriate for training, if they are soft.
You don't need to be "alpha" -- there's no such thing. You just need to train your dog to do the things you want, consistently.
Dog Training Fundamentals
- Use what ever your dog fancies (obv dog friendly) cheese, carrot, store bought liver treats, ground beef, chicken... the dog may not be food motivated, which is where her fav toy will play the role of a treat.
This whole "alpha dog" thing... honestly I dont do anything special to establish my rank in the house, I simply train and dont let him get away with bad things.
My method is positive training with some other chucked in, lure the dog into position with a treat basically. When you need to correct bad behavour, give a firm NO and ignore. When on leash and she pulls give a tug back into place once a few steps have been taken next to you give her a pat on the sides.
With jumping on you dont pay any attention to her, push her down with a NO once ALL fours are on the ground pet and praise. You need to let her know she is visible when on the ground and does NOT need to jump up to be seen or to get attention.
If you like you can email me for more :) - Most dogs will eat almost any kind of treat. You can buy inexpensive ones at walmart.
We trained our dog on our own but if you are a first time dog owner and you don't have basic knowledge on training, I highly suggest, enrolling her for obedience school. It will help you out a lot.
If you want your dog to see you as a leader, you have to project confidence in yourself and how you deal with her. Dogs can read body language very well..if your dog is stubborn, she will not take you seriously if she senses weakness or there is an inability on your part to follow through. You have to be firm but don't yell or show anger/frustration. You have to set rules and boundaries and stick to them no matter what. Good luck. - For treats I go to Pet Smart -they have the bar where you can select from several sizes and flavors and buy the quantity you want.
Be firm and calm and let him know he can trust you. Realize that he wants boundaries, and most dogs love to learn new things and to please you. When he jumps turn your body away from him and ignore him. Only pay attention to him when he is calm.
Praise him but not in an overly excited way.
Prior to the dog I own now I always took my dog everywhere I could and exposed him to new experiences while constantly reinforcing training and praising him when he obeyed commands. I always had really calm well trained dogs that people always commented on. I realize with the shelter dog I have now who has a myriad of phobias that I hadn't done that and it's been slow going. So now I am trying to take him with me more and work with him in all situations, and it seems to be working. Always try to end training sessions on a good note and he will look forward to them. - i used pieces of small hot dogs, to train my pit bull, and i trained her when she was 6weeks old, and she is a very smart dog, she learned the sit command, really fast, later on, i trained her, to stay, come, sit, down, and she sometimes will give her paw if you ask her for it, to shake your hand, i think my brother taught her how to shake hands, she also knows how to fetch, and ive never had a dog who knew how to do that, and i use to have a golden retriever and a purebred labrador, and they didn't know how to fetch,
my pit is very intelligent, she is the greatest dog i have ever had - Hey ,This is a very comprehensive dog training guide written by daniel stevens.
i trained my dogs using his guideHope that helps
