Dog Health Questions: Dog train question. when my dog smells the treats she goes crazy?

right now i'm trying to teach her to sit and anytime i get the treats out she is all over me trying to get them. What am i doing wrong? AS soon as she does that i try a couple times to get her to pay attention but once it's clear she isn't going to i put the treats up. Cuz if i would them them to her that would just make her keep doing it. What should i do to get her not to flip out at the smell of treats so she will get the learn the trick so then she'll get a treat?

A Long Tradition of Dog Training

Recommended Answer:
use something not so appetizing, or wait until after she had had a walk and a meal.
training is best done with some dogs when they are more tired.

you don't HAVE to use food as a reward, either. i don't reward with food... then my dogs expect too much- sometimes petting and attention is enough, and some dogs have a favorite toy they'll work for.

use "cookie zen". if the dog didn't earn the treat, then it doesn't get it.
a dog NEVER gets a treat if it goes all crazy.

set the treat on your hand, palm open.
when the dog goes nuts, close into a fist.
when the dog settles down, open the fist.
it takes practice, but it works.

Dog Training Hand Signals - 2 Important Commands You Can Teach Today

  • don't do it continuously.
tell her to sit if she does that give her a treat. then try it in 1 hour again. if not they are mostly crazy about the treats and the wont pay attention again

  • well maybe don't get the food out tell she sits or whatever you want her to learn, maybe if she has a favorite toy, you can us that. If she will on do it for food, make the smell on your hand show her theres nothing in your hand then say sit

  • I recommend taking an obedience class.

In the classes I teach the first thing we talk about is getting your dog to focus on you and when the treat comes. We use a marker to tell the dog when the treat comes helps them to understand that they need to do something to get the mark to get the treat.

I'd also use a correction word (or a negative marker, like no or ah ah) to tell your dog she is doing something wrong. if she stops her "bad" behaviour mark and reward.

Walking her before training is an excellent option as well. The walk helps to get some energy out.
