Dog Training DVD, A Great Investment in Your Dog
Recommended Answer:
House training:
I used a method where I hung a bell at the door. I'd take the dog out for a walk every one to two hours but before leaving the house, I'd ring the bell. After a week, I would take my puppy out and I'd use his paw to ring the bell, then I would praise him and say to him, let's go out (those are the words I say to him everytime we go out so he knows to sit at the door so I can put on his harness and lead). It took about a month or so but eventually, the dog would start ringing the bell on his own whenever he has to go out. Now I let him run around the house and he lets me know when he has to go.
Some tips:
1. Don't punish the dog if he went in the house. I did this to my dog when he pooped in the house so he started eating his poop so I would'nt find it and he wouldn't get in trouble. After I stopped scolding him for pooping, he's stopped eating it (most of the time).
2. Only punish him if you catch him in the act of relieving himself in your house. If you come home from work and he's gone in your house and you punish him, he's only going to learn to fear you when you get home.
3. Use puppy pads at night. Eventually, he'll be able to hold it overnight.
4. ALWAYS give him a treat and kind words when he's done something right.
5. Patience is important. I got a book on how to house train dogs and was horrified when the book said that Shih Tzus take longer to train than other dogs (my puppy is a Shih Tzu). With the bell method, he learned in a month, although he did have some "accidents" afterwards.
Sit:
Push the dogs buttocks down (gently) and say sit. Eventually, he'll get it. Took my dog three days.
Lie Down:
Pull the dogs front paws foward and say lie down. This took him five days.
High Five:
Put your hand up to his face and say high five, then grab his paw and put it in your hand. This took him one hour. (By this time, he knew tricks would equal treats.)
Bark:
When your dog barks, yell speak. Then pet and cuddle your dog as if he just did something so wonderful until he associates barking with the word speak. Eventually, he'll bark every time you use the word speak. (You can use whatever word you want......talk, bark, etc...)
