Service Dog Training - How to Prepare Your Dog

There are many answers you will get on this subject. There isn't a clear-cut correct or wrong way to do it. Some people will suggest head halters (which can have very serious problems if used with a too powerful dog, and I've never noticed them actually working). Some will say choke collars. Some will say prong collars (which is what I use for my GSD). All training collars and halters can injure your dog if you don't know what you're doing. So, the best way to avoid the possibility of that happening is to not use one. The best way, that I know of, to train a dog without a training collar is a method recommended and used by the Monks of New Skete.

Get a long leash (I think they suggest a leash between 20 and 60 feet) and go to a large, open field. With your dog on the leash, start walking at a brisk pace, ignoring your dog. If and when you feel a tug on the leash, say something like, "Let's go, (dog's name)!" She should naturally follow you. When the dog starts to follow, praise her. Keep doing this in a large square. You'll notice after a while that there will be no tug, because your dog is already following you. I like to keep my dog alert, so I don't always walk, sometimes I run or walk really slow, and I rarely walk in a square (only when I first start), but rather just make lots of random turns.

Hope that helps!

A Guide to Basic Dog Training Principles

  • Depending on the type of dog will determine the kind of advanced training. For basic training and behavior techniques find the training by the Brothers of New Skete. Those are the best books I have every found for basic training and behavior modification. Once you have the basics you can move on to more breed specific trainig. The are whole sections on training at Barnes & Noble and Borders.

  • When I am teaching my dogs to walk beside me, I keep an enticing treat in my hand to keep the dogs attention focused on me. Every once in awhile, I will give the dog a small taste of the treat in my hand. Eventually, your dog will walk beside you.

  • I recommend you visit the website I went to when my dog had behavioral issues a while back. It transformed my dog's behavior. Good Luck!

  • I think this guy know his thing.

    Good luck!

  • Your dog needs to be in balance before she will listen to you particularly outside or without a treat. Use the S.C.A.L.E. to keep her in Balance

Socialization – Meet all kinds of people, animals, and start habits (brush teeth same time each day). If your dog is under socialized, she will be too excited at seeing new things to listen to you. Habits are the same thing as good trainng. If you teach your dog to sit when people come in the door or approach, they will learn to sit instead of jump.

Communication –2 second rule – all feed back within 2 sec
Voice tones; command voice and praise
Commands are one word only, no repeats

Affection – Health of the dog and affection from Dogs view- their needs filled

Leadership – Without leadership (which humans must earn thru respeact, not power) the dog can not listen to you when she is outside, she can not trust that you will keep her safe. Leadership exercises include the following:
    NO FREE LUNCH
    NO DOGS ON FURNITURE
    LIMIT ACCESS TO THE HOUSE
HUMANS THRU DOORS AND STAIRS FIRST

Exercise – Dog must have enough physical and mental exercise:
Physically means more than walks; a dog often needs running and dog to dog off leash play (dog parks). Some dogs need 1 – 2 hours. Use back packs to increase their exertion.
Mental – Use interactive dog toys and puzzles. If your dog is understimulated physically or mentally, they can not concentrate on listening to you.

Teaching no pull walking: walk until the leash gets tight from pulling, make a noise, then walk backwards until the leash gets loose again. Repeat this many many times until the dog gets the connection between a collar (regular) close to his neck and not going forward, and a loose collar and going forward.

Teaching Heel: Hold a treat next to your left side and very close to the dogs nose and do a Heel, sit exercise in your house for a while until she gets use to the word heel. Then use the treat method for longer in house walks....Finally take it outside for short distances. Eventually wean off the treats and use your hand for a marker. Eventually, just the word will work.
