Dog Health Questions: Do you think it is wrong to give a service dog license to anyone?

in my city any dog can become a service dog with just a doctors letter saying you need a service animal. the dog doesn't have to have any service dog training or any training at all its optional. that how my dog was licensed and because i don't look disabled or the dog doesn't have thing like a vest saying service animal just a tag saying" California assistant animal" people give me angry looks in the store thinking i am doing something wrong when i tell it is a service animal they don't believe me. im surprised most people think that all dogs should have extensive training to be service animals. do you think it is wrong that the city does this?

What to Look For in the Best Dog Training Program

Recommended Answer:
I don't know why our county does it, either, but it is Federally Mandated that a service dog is trained to do tasks which mitigate the person's substantial limitations. Let's look at that wording.

Substantial Limitation means if you're using your dog for some psychiatric thing, and it's not debilitating (such as schizophrenia), then you are illegally misusing the dog and people like me who come along, tag or no tag, and who challenge you on it, will see you lose in court and fined and/or jailed.

It is unlawful, no matter what the county animal shelter gave you, no matter what the sherrif's office gave you, no matter what your county allowed...it is ILLEGAL to misuse your dog.

Your dog isn't trained to do tasks and that means it is sidestepping federal laws. Federal laws. Federal!

Federal outweighs ALL state and local agency laws.

Federal laws state that service animals may only be used for severe disabilities.

It further states that all service animals may only be used if they are trained to do tasks.

Those tasks must mitigate the person's uncurable, unchanging and lifelong disability.

I see more small dog users abusing this law than any other. Last night, in Wal Mart, I got my next case to deal with.

This lady comes in with her chihuahua cross in a stroller. She tells the lady at the counter it's a service animal. Who is serving who?!

Those dogs are not service animals, no matter what your county says and everytime someone misuses one, someone with a valid disability and a trained dog (he does over 55 commands to assist me) comes in behind those idiots and we have the hardest time because untrained dogs pee, they poop, they bite and do bad things in stores and those of us who come along behind them have to take the flack for those dogs.

It is a haineous misuse of the laws to allow tagging of dogs based on doctor's notes, when the people are not disabled enough to have one.

Disabled enough, according to the US Dept. Of Justice means severely disabled.

For instance, a person was found not to be disabled who had emphasema because as soon as she had oxygen, it brought her O2 levels up to normal values. She no longer could use her dog, based on that.

Another case at the USDOJ - The person claimed Bi-Polar disorder, and was found not severely disabled enough to have the dog (in fact, there are hundreds of cases just like this being seen), and another point in question...the person had a seizure disorder. The dog wasn't trained to do any tasks, and his seizures were weekly. Sorry. Not enough to have a dog according to the DOJ. They had to get rid of their dogs and some of them were fined major fines.

If I challenged someone who I saw with a service animal, who was telling people they use it for mental illness, I will usually win.

Good luck...you asked an honest question, wanting an honest answer and there is one.

Misusing a service dog, knowing what you know now, is illegal and it is wrong and it makes the lives of those who use them validly that much harder to follow in your footsteps.

Dog Training Tips That Work Best For Smart Dogs

  • If people only realized that just about any dog wold make a good service dog. If they have a loving nurturing environment most dogs do just that anyway whether their owners have disabilities or not. It's their nature to please their owners. I really don't see anybody better to teach your service dog what you need from him than you.

The centers that do undertake these training exercises are still important as they oversee the selection process ensuring the best traits required for specific needs and then train in those specifics in an attempt to have a number of service dogs available at any given time. But if you already have a dog or went out and got you own and trained it yourself - you should be not only handed your service dog license you should be congratulated.

  • In order for a dog to be a service animal, it needs to have SOME kind of training to assist you... it could just be something as simple as the dog alerts you to health issues.. or if you suffer social anxieties, the dog may whine and act as if it needs to go out, so you have a reason to excuse yourself from a social situation.

What good does a letter from a Dr do if the dog is not trained to serve your need? It does not need extensive training from a trainer, there are people who do train their own dogs, but the dog should be trained to do something.

How to Train Dogs Not to Bite
Dog Obedience Training to Eliminate Biting and Mouthing

Dog Obedience Training to Eliminate Biting, Photo by Jeff Paulson
Pet owners need to start dog obedience training early. Training a dog not to bite is top priority, even though playful biting is natural puppy behavior.

It's easy to forget that adorable puppies come with a mouthful of needle-sharp teeth. Part of a puppy's irresistibility is due to his playful nature, but when a puppy plays he's bound to use those little teeth.

Even though biting and mouthing are natural behaviors for puppies, it's important to start training early. A puppy needs to learn what play is acceptable in his new human pack and what play isn't.
Why Do Puppies Bite?

When watching a puppy play with his litter mates, a pet owner can observe a lot of mouthing and playful nipping. Mostly, they're just having fun, but every once in a while, a puppy yips in pain and play stops.

This play serves as an important lesson for a new puppy. They learn what level of biting is all in good fun and what level of biting is unacceptable.

Mouthing isn't a bad behavior for a young puppy. In fact, puppies who don't bite at all lack the bite inhibition most dogs learn during their first few months. This means when such a dog bites for the first time, it's more likely to lead to serious injury.

Dog Training - Three Stages of Dog Training

  • If you're looking to properly train your puppy or older dog yourself at home - this website is for you.

You'll find a huge collection of proven dog training information and tips used by professional dog trainers worldwide. My goal is to help you select, raise and train your dog in a positive and effective manner.

Choose your dog training issue from the list below and learn how to train your dog step-by-step using the very latest dog training techniques - your dog will love you for it.

How To Train A Dog - The Right Way

There are so many theories and so much conflicting advice regarding the various ways to train our dogs - it's hard to know who to trust and what to believe.

This is what I personally consider to be crucial, and always strive for when training my own dogs:

To build a strong owner-dog relationship, based on trust and mutual respect.
To have confidence in, and control of my dogs in any situation.
Most importantly to have happy, outgoing dogs that are properly socialized.
To work with my dogs natural drives and instincts.
Absolutely no cruelty or harsh "old school" training techniques. I certainly don't believe you have to "break a dogs spirit" in the training process.

  • I saw this show with my two eyes in person & talked to the trainer.

Some people just have a way with animals that no one else has.
He is 'touched' & talented. We chatted between shows. His dogs are amazing.

  • thats amazing! and I'm not really interested in training my dog like that. All he needs to know is sit, stay, heel, paw and to be potty trained.:)

Dog Health Questions: Dog training question???PLZ HELP!!!?

we just got a chihuahua he is supposevly a year old. he is HALF newspaper trained in fact he just made an accident on the floor. we dont want to get rid of him but dont want him pooping on the floor. how do you train a dog to potty outside??? we will get rid of him if he doesnt improve

Dog Training Book - Why Buy One? When Everything is Free Online!

Recommended Answer:
"we will get rid of him if he doesnt improve"

Pretty harsh. It is not the dog's fault that he is not trained. It is the fault of his previous owner. Don't follow in that person's footsteps!
If you don't know how to train this dog, an obedience class could be helpful, and a book on potty training.

ETA: You may not know this, but capital letters on the Internet is the equivalent of shouting. Why are you shouting at us? We are suggesting you train your dog. That is what will stop him pooping and peeing everywhere. We have no other answer for you. You cannot train a dog through questions on the Internet, you have to get personally involved to be successful. Once again, find a trainer to help you.

And it is harsh to get rid of a dog because the owner cannot figure out how to train him. That is why there are so many dogs dying in shelters.

Show Dog Training

  • these things takes time he should had been trained be for you bought him , and you don't know how old he is to be exact what happened to the certificate that should had came with the dog ? you don't really know how old this dog is so it may take longer to train him when they dogs are older its harder to train unlike pups.. best thing to do since he is a little dog anyway when you see him sniffing around your home and it looks as if he is going to cock- his leg up pick him up and put him out doors or you can leave the door open at all times.

  • People who get rid of dogs for pooing in the house are irresponsible. He obviously isn't housebroken. You need to buy a crate and crate train him. You need to take him out every two hours to start then after you see how often he goes, you can take him out less. Always have treats in your pocket and give him a treat when he poos and pees outside. he needs to connect that it is rewarding to go outside. Eventually he will only go outside. If you SEE him go inside say No! then pick him up and take him straight outside. If you do not see him but he has an accident you can not yell at him. It isn't his fault. You need to train him because obviously he wasn't trained. Don't use paper. Think about it, you will have t train him 2 times. It is easier to just train once to directly go outside. If you give up and get rid of him, take him to a "no kill" shelter.

  • Being consistent and have patience. When you take him out, take him to the same spot every time and never take him to this spot to play. Have another area for that. While you are out there do not talk or play with him. Once he pees or poops pick him up and take him inside and give a small treat. Do this several times a day, after he wakes up from naps, plays, eats or you observe him walking around looking like he needs to go. If you do this CONSISTENTLY for a week you should be ok. Remember never to shove his face into it. If and when he has accidents before you get him trained just immediately pick him up and take him outside to his spot. He won't have to go now but just stay a minute or so then pick him up and take inside. Hope this helps.

  • First of all, take the carpet away, he cant poop on its if its not there.
1 year old dogs should be "easy" to train, compared to a puppy.

On how to housetrain the dog, there are many ways.
Its possible to do it with some dedicaion, maybe perfect time for you
to show you really want/can take care of a dog, with time and patience

  • I understand your frustrations. This site has some good tips and tricks for successful chihuahua potty training:

    http://www.chihuahuainfoonline.com/2009/…

  • Some one told me you can train chihuahuas to use a cat litter box.

  • take him out after waking, eating and playing. about every hour until you figure out a schedule.

  • give him lots of spaghetti

Dog Health Questions: Best dog training programs???

whats the best training for a German/chow mix I was thinking Petsmart but does that work?? the puppy is like the right age to start training please help!!!

Revealed - Boxer Dog Training Secrets

Recommended Answer:
I think dog training programs are so individual -- I always recommend that people go watch a class or two and talk to the trainers. I don't know much about the Petsmart trainers around here. Just look for someone who obviously likes dogs and that you are comfortable with. Local kennel clubs and obedience clubs are also usually good and offer training to all dogs.

If they won't allow you to watch a class, or explain their methods -- steer clear!!

Dog Training Ideas

  • any dog training is better then notthing begin at petsmart if you find something beyond that do it its for youand your dog

  • I suggest you consider a private trainer, one who comes to your home for puppy/behavioral training, as well as who offers group classes for proper socialization and working with distractions.
Petsmart is okay, but their trainers have little to no standards to train by, and are simply trained by Petsmart in a short-term accrediation program.

Someone certified by the APDT is a better choice.

  • Look here for a trainer:

    www.ccpdt.com

All of these people have passed a test in training, behavior, husbandry and teaching. In order to even take the test, they had to have several hundred hours training dogs, in classes and privately.

They are well-schooled in all aspects of domestic dog behavior in order to put the CPDT initials after their name.

  • the best training programs actually train YOU to work with your dog. The trick, then is to find a trainer YOU are comfortable with, and one who uses methods you think you can follow. If the best trainer in the world uses a prong collar and YOU aren't comfortable with it...it won't work out...so look around, watch a couple of classes, and find someone who seems to get good results using methods you think you can use.

  • It was roughly one year ago that a dog trainer at Petsmart using a "training style" on a dog that actually killed the dog. Petsmart acknowledged that the method used was no training method at all but an employee trying to wing it. The employee was dismissed, and the store settled out of court.

I really believe that you have to carefully decide who will be the trainer of your dog based on their experience with your type of dog. I would never advise someone to hire a personal trainer simply because the whole purpose of training is to teach a dog how to properly behave in the midst of lots of distractions--especially other dogs. You gain none of that by having someone come to your home to train your dog--but you will pay a ridiculous fee.

Most towns have dog training schools as part of dog clubs. The classes will be taught most likely in groups of 10-20 dogs with their owners. Puppies are usually grouped together in a beginner puppy class. Instructors will have had training and also will have trained their own dogs. Some will have more experience than others, but all classes will use assistants to help each owner benefit from each class. I wholeheartedly support the training class rather than the individual approach.

You will find the names of clubs that hold classes from your veterinarian or from the local phone book.

Dog Health Questions: Dog training: transferring from the puppy-pad to the outdoors?

I have a 6 month old pomeranian. He is house trained to do his business on a "puppy-pad" which is kept in my bathroom. He is very good at going to the bathroom on the pad, but ONLY when he is confined to my bedroom & bathroom (I block the door with a baby-gate). I have tried everything-- gradually moving the pad to the door, bringing the puppy-pad outside for him to go out there, etc.-- but he rarely does his business outside. He'll hold it until we come back inside & then go on the pad. Also, if he is NOT confined to the bedroom & bathroom where the pad is (i.e. if he's allowed to roam the house under supervision) he just goes to the bathroom wherever he pleases, without an attempt to return to the pad. I'm getting worried because he's getting older... what should I do to solve this problem & get him to go outside? I would like to eventually be able to let him loose in the hous while I'm home (he is crated when I'm out) without worrying about him having an accident.

Must-Have Tools For Easy And Fun Dog Training

Recommended Answer:
hes still 6 months old, these things take some time to adjust to. if hes not going to go on the pad when he is able to roam free about the house maybe try keeping him in the bathroom for a longer period and expand on the size of the area slowly. and take some of the space away he he goes whereever. start moving the pad to the door and try bringing some grass and a few sticks or branches inside and leave them by the pad. he will get used to the scent and might help him adjust. he might just b scared to go outside. just dont expect him to b trained overnite. it takes time and patience. work with him and give him a treat if he does good. thats all most dogs need and/or want - love

such as doing what you instructed Laura.

Or get on the net & look up 'obedience training', 'bacic obedience commands', 'socializing a dog' & do it all yourself.

      • The SPCA in my town does basic and intermediate obedience classes. Anything that will take the dog's attention away from other dogs and onto you and also positively reward the dog for being around other dogs will help to rehabilitate him/her. Try them...

      • Most of the training classes can be a bit pricey. Ask about special classes for reactive dogs and see how much those are. Hope this helps.

      Recommended Answer:
Ok well i think the best thing to do is when ever he grawls at people or gets very agressive flip him/her onto its back and hold him/her by the neck i know that sounds crew but trust me its now that is what a mother dog would do to her pups and my dogs are very well trained and we did that. just hold him/her down to let him know ur the boss and dont let him go until he has stop trying to get out of the position or when he stops grawling.
Hope I help and hope thigns go well =)

Shock Collar Dog Training the Quick and Easy Way

      • lol, like your first answer said, you have to let your dog know that you're boss. however, i have an easier method. when you take your dog for a walk - on a leash! - and he starts growling or barking, step on the leash, and pull up so that your dog's head is forced to the ground. i don't mean hard enough to hurt, but hard enough to get his nose in the dirt, and get his attention. your dog is aggressive either because he wants to protect you, or protect what he sees as his territory. he can't be a big buff tough guy when he can't get his nose out of the dirt, ya know? as soon as he stops showing aggression, let him up and reward him with a treat. if he shows aggression again, then step on the leash again. it works really well, and it's not as weird looking as sitting on top of your dog, lol.

Dog Health Questions: Dog care and Dog training (tricks) Tips?

I need dog care and Dog training tips!! Just dogs in general

      Old Fashioned Dog Training

      Recommended Answer:
Obedience training is the foundation for establishing a better relationship between you and your dog. Obedience training helps establish the owner in the role of "pack leader". Obedience will lay down clear behavior guidelines that your dog can follow. A well-behaved, obedient dog is more than just a pet of pride. The difference lies largely in the training, and good training can save a dog's life.

These articles will give you tips about how to best train your dog.

Dog Training Command - Communicating With Your Dog

      • You may train any dog, or cat by using treats. But make sure the word you are using, as in "sit" or "lay" only one person should try to teach the animal till it is comfortable with doing this command. If you have too many people trying to teach the dog, it may become confused. But what kind of tricks do you plan on teaching??
        like i said, simple commands
you can also work up to harder commands too. and try to do tricks often to keep the trick your dog has just learned fresh.
anything is possible with some treats, because every dog and cat needs a motivation.

      • To take care of a dog, first you need to know what specific dog you want to know about, because different dogs need different care, as for dog tricks, you need to be persistent do not say "bad" or be harsh when the dog doesn't get it right the first time, use a kind but firm voice you don't want to scare the dog but show it that you are the boss. never shout at the dog instead correct him/her. Let me know what kind of dog and i will give you care tips.

      • Tricks are both enjoyable and extremely useful.

        Here's more info.
        http://lnk.nu/dogtime.com/swu.htm

      • For teaching an animal tricks, I prefer not to use treats, but to use lots of praise, since sometimes treats aren't readily available, but praise is always available. I learned this from my husband, who teaches obedience classes for dogs. The trick is to make sure when your dog does something wrong, you correct it quickly. You also praise it as soon as it does something right. Once in a while you can use treats, but it's better to get your dog to respond without treats. As for dog care, take it to the vet for all of it's shots and medication as needed. Flea, heartworm, vaccinations..etc. Try not to give it table food. Some people give their dogs chicken, which is ok, but for me, I stick to dog food that has been formulated especially for dogs. Make sure your dog gets the proper amount of exercise. Give your dog lots of care and attention and most of all, LOVE!

      • I Strongly suggest using a whistle (either a metal one of just use your mouth) for your attention command and your come command.

reason- I take my two Red Healers to the dog park a lot. while at the park there are many owners that scream "come" or the dogs name over and over again.. I use the my mouth to whistle and the tone can carry over the barking and yelling of the environment. also nine times out of ten you are the only one who will be whistling..

good luck. and have fun... tranning is SO worth it, just to see the look on other peoples faces when they see an obedient dog and an awesome owner.
