Dog Health Questions: DS: Does your personality change when you're not with your dog?

Does being with your dog make you more outgoing and friendly? How are you when you aren't with your dog?

Normally my personality tweaks ever so slightly depending on who I'm around. But if I'm not with Rock, I'm pretty twitchy and anxious and a bit more shut-in. Especially when I'm with a new crowd and I know no one... . I can warm up to people pretty easily, but I'm 100% confident Onyx when I'm with Rock or people I know well. Otherwise, I'm terribly shy. It's not like I can help it, I just feel more comfortable and happy with Rock.

What about you? Has your dog helped you become more confident and outgoing? How? Do you think it's because of your dog's personality that helps you to be more comfortable around people?

(I've been thinking about studying psychology and that sort of stuff after dog training + media school, if you can't tell)

Four Dog Training Tools That You Must Use

    • Damned straight my personality changes. I become even more ornery than I am here. I have to keep my dog beside me when I come to this section or I'd reach through the screen and throttle some of these people. And that's quite the effort tonight because the dog has a rotten case of the room clearing phartes. The air in here is bluer than my monitor screen.
Probably explains why I'm so mellow tonight. I'm high on dog phartes.

    • I'm not lying I hit myself when my dog gets hurt. A coyote looked at my dog and I shot it in the eye with my bb gun. My dog is my kid. If you mess with my dog you get consequences.

    • being around your dog kicks in you maternal instinct which makes you more motherly and friendly. It happens to everyone, even if its not your dog.

    • yes, I am. I also feel much safer when i am with my dogs. Bella my smallest is 85 lbs and Meridell and Sampson both weigh 135 lbs and Rocko is in between at 110

    • I probably just laugh a lot more when my dogs are with me.

Dog Health Questions: My dog started the irritating habit of whining about a month or two ago...is there an easy way to stop this?

My dog will be ten in March. She is healthy and will run down the long hall in my apartment building. Lately, however she has started the irritating habit of whining. If I stop anywhere while walking her she will whine ( when I stop I will be talking to other people), it really started with that a few months ago, now whenever I cook she will whine (for food). She is getting fed enough and has even gained weight in the past few months. Tonight I told her to lay down when the whining started. I really want to give her a little piece of steak, but am getting sick of the whining. Otherwise, no problems. She has extra biscuits on the floor now to eat as needed. She seems to eat those only when I'm out. Two other brands I give to her occasionally. Like any dog she will eat nonstop. By the way I had to feed her canned when I got her a year ago - the person who had her passed on - she refused to eat dry - wouldn't eat for five days plus... She's very smart, housebroken and well-trained and is a Cairn Terrier mix... any advice would help - I don't know much about dog training.

Choosing an Online Dog Training Program

Whining often signals pain. Witha 10 year old i would suspect arthritis. Running , lying down hurts.

I use a heated dog bed, glucosamine/chondroitin supplements and pain meds from the vet.

Sounds like a Senior dog Wellness check is needed.

Dog Health Questions: Male Dog becoming agressive now that I am pregnant! Advice?

I am 8 months pregnant and have a Male dog. He is neautered but since I have become pregnant he went from the Calm submissive love muffin loving everyone to being overprotective of me to the point where he would nip. He really hates males except my husband..I just don't get it. We have spent hundreds of dollars on Dog training from Bark Busters training to Dog therpy and nothing has worked. Our Vet says you can't Untrain "Instinct" since our dog instict is to protect pregnant females.

However it's not just with my dogs. My Husbands best friend has a male dog who is wonderful but since I have gotten pregnant he is even protective of me and I hardly see him..Also when I go to a dog park all the dogs sworm at me like I am a female in heat...This is getting very annoying...Any tips or advice?

Dog Health Questions: Agility dog classes near Royal Oak, Michigan?

I have a dog who is not confident when away from his home. He has passed his Therapy Dog training but before I take him out, I want to build up his confidence. I have heard agility classes are a good way to do this. Does anyone know of any near Royal Oak, Michigan and/or better ways to make him all around more confident in new situations? His lack of confidence is shown in his tail being down, hesitation in going near strange objects (I once sat with him by a statue downtown for an hour before he finally relaxed and went up to it!), constant sniffing of the entire area (I mean, throwing his entire body into trying to sniff out every square inch if he is on a leash), and jumpyness. He is also weary of some men. Once he is comfortable with a an environment he is a very outgoing and well adjusted attention seeking dog, which makes me think if we could get past the initial insecurities he would love being a therapy dog.

Do You Need Dog Training Tools When You Train Your Dog?

      Recommended Answer:
I teach an intro to obstacles class in Troy, MI. It is not starting for a while, however another great option for building confidence is Rally Obedience. It is very positive and a lot of fun. I have a class starting next Monday (May 7) at 6pm if you are interested.

Traditional Dog Training Versus Positive Reinforcement Dog Training - A Comparison

      • Do a search for kennel clubs and obedience clubs in Royal Oak or the next largest city. Try the akc.org site.

Just going to a class regularly will help. So will taking walks in a park near ballgames, soccer, etc. Take him shopping to pet stores. If your family doesn't mind take him with you there, too.

I would start with a basic obedience class before agility. You need his attention and confidence.

Always socialize pups as above and keep doing it ..... strart sooner and you won't have this problem

The problem with this is that if a dog gets really scared of something or someone away from home is that a 'fear biter' will growl. This is a last ditch effort to protect himself.

Do not grab him and hold him if he growls and tell him it will be O.K. I grab mine by the muzzle so he can't do anything and continue in the same area and then relax, repeat and relax. Once the tail wags, treat !

Your instructor will help in detail.

Dog Health Questions: Good Dog Training Books, Videos, Sites?

I recently rescued an 11month old dog and I'd like to train it well. Unfortunately, I just don't have the money to invest into obedience classes. I'd like to know of any good books, videos, or sites that can help.... She's already housebroken, knows to sit, and crate trained... What I'd like to be able to focus on are:

      - Staying near by when off leash
      - Lay Down
      - Remaining calm around new people and other dogs

One of the best books I've read (and I've read dog books for many, many years) is by Brenda Aloff called "Get Connected With your Dog". It comes with a DVD so you can see everything you're reading. She teaches a lot of important stuff - among them is teaching your dog how to be calm around all kinds of distractions - new people and other dogs.

This is probably the best all-around book you can get for your money.

      • The library might be a good place to be able to compare different dog training books.

There are different training methods out there and you need to find one that suits you and your dog.

The number one rule is you need to be consistent with whatever method you choose. Also you don't just train your dog, dog training has to be an ongoing part of your dogs life.

Dog Health Questions: Doberman for a first dog?

I've never had a dog before, and I want a doberman pinscher from a real breeder, not a pet store. I didn't just wake up this morning and decide I wanted a doberman. I've done plenty of homework. I want a dog that will be loving with my parents and nieces, and when I have children, to love them as a part of the family. I've read several dog training books, and even Cesar Milan's be the pack leader. I also found classes at the YMCA that offer puppy training and socialization for 8 weeks, followed by advanced dog training for 7 weeks. I also will be taking my puppy to my sister-in-law's daycare and let him play with the children (under supervision of course) just to get him socialized. I have an average size house and a small yard, but I enjoy running and will take my dog with me when he's old enough. Do you think a Doberman will be a good first time dog for me?

      Dog Training vs Horse Training

      Recommended Answer:
A well breed Dobermann is *not* the breed for the weak willed or novice handler, as they very much have a mind of their own & need to be able to respect their handler/pack.

Dobes are an incredibly loyal, faithful and devoted dog, valued for their physical and mental ability. The Dobermann needs mental stimulation as much as physical exercise. They thrive on being worked and mentally stimulated, and *will not* be satisfied being house-bound 23 hours a day with *one hours run around the park*.

Dobes love to work, they need mental as well as physical exercise, so if you want a breed to walk around the park for an hour after work, a Dobe isn't the breed for you.

When they are fully grown, Dobes require a minimum of 1½ hours hard walking/ free running each day.

Dobes are a very sensitive breed, and being over harsh or shouting too loudly will never be forgiven. However, you do need to let your Dobe know his or her place in the pack, and that is at the bottom of it!

As with all dogs, a combination of love and discipline is important, and there is a very fine line between being too hard and too soft. Hard handling can make for a shy, cautious animal which is as much of a danger as an over-confident dog. It is finding the right balance that determines how successful you would be in owning this breed.

I would not reccomend a Dobermann for a novice dog owner. That said, if you decide to proceed, as a first time Dobe owner, it would be perhaps wiser to have a b*tch. You would enjoy all the characteristics of the breed, without so much of the territorial, aggressive behaviour that is associated with adolescent male Dobermanns.

Basic Obedience Training - Secret of Having a Well-Behaved Dog - Training Tips For Different Dogs

      • go for it!
you sound like you've done your homework and are ready for the responsibility of caring for, exercising and training a dog.
obedience classes are a lot of fun but be commited, but it sounds like u will be.
make sure your puppy gets all his shots before you bring him to the day care centre though.
        have fun!

      • You sound like a perfecyt dog owner you defintly are ready but make sure you dont feed him to much or it result in bloat!

      • to tell you the truth i think any dog will be good for you because you have your research all done and i think you should get your dog today

      • Find a reputable breeder and discuss it with them, arrange to visit with them and ask if you can spend time with their dogs to make sure you are 100% about having a pup from one them. Any reputable breeder would make time for someone who shows that much interest in their dogs.

      • You seem to have done much thinking about getting a doberman. Have you read that they bond quite strongly with one person? Since you are young, you are looking at a future with a spouse and children. Dobermans aren't the type of dog to welcome competition for the attention that at the present you will give the dog, but later you will give to a spouse and children. If you get one now, I'm afraid that you will have to re-home it later, so I would recommend that you consider another breed. By the way, not many parents of children attending daycare are going to appreciate you bringing your doberman there for socialization. Maybe when it is weeks old, but when it gets a little bigger you will begin getting "looks" from everyone that you go around. Many people are afraid of this breed and you will find out just how prejudiced people can be against certain breeds. I should know, I have a Rottweiler and deal with prejudice everytime we leave the house. She is a wonderful dog, but of course they are just going by her looks, not her personality.

      • Absolutely! You sound like you have really done your research and Dobermans are amazing dogs. I grew up in a family that always had Dobermans, we had no issues at all with this breed. Ours were well socialized from puppyhood and grew up to be well adjusted, loving dogs. The nice thing about this breed is that they are incredibly smart and learn quickly during training. The key is to train them properly, and you sound like you are definitely prepared and on the right track with that! Just make sure to pick out a good, reputable breeder - one that has good, solid history with the breed and no issues with genetic defects are obvious key things to look for. Good luck!!

      • Susan B, where do you get the idea that they bond with only 1 person? Do you have any experience with a Dobe? Anyway, to the poster, you sound like you are on the right track. Do your research for a good breeder, who preferably shows her dogs. Therefore you will be able to get a pup whose parents have also been genetically health tested and one that has a nice show crop, if you live in the US. They are a Velcro dog that loves to be with people. (not just one person) I use to show and breed Dobes, and have owned 8, both male and female, over the last 25 years. We got our first Dobe when our sons were 3&6 years old. (They are now 28 & 31) We never had a problem with our Dobes bonding with anyone, kids of all ages, grandpa & grandma, neighbors, and other pets. It sounds like you are doing your homework. Good job, and I hope you find the companion of your dreams.

      • I have never owned a dog before and I began my research about a year ago. I decided the Doberman was perfect for my life and I am also a huge Milan fan. I live in Canada and I had a breeder tell me that there is a difference in "wiring" between a working and non-working line of Doberman. Make sure you ask your breeder about his dogs temperments and what they are best 'wired' to do. My breeder and the book Brains & Beauty by Joanna Walker will tell you there is a difference between European and American bloodlines. For a companion pet I have been told it is the American bloodline that would be best for me.

      • they are good dogs.

      • extremely aggressive and not able to be trusted. I would go with a lab. they love everyone and love to go jogging. they sound great for you. do some more research. good luck

Dog Health Questions: Dog training questions?

OK Now that I know what to do with my dogs I have more questions. How much should yorkies eat and 2 or 3 times a day. Also just how often should I let them out???? BTW if my other dog is half the size a yorkie how much should it eat???

      Helpful Tips on Dog Training

      Recommended Answer:
Yorkies generally should eat 1⁄4 to 1⁄2 cup of food daily. What you might want to do it break it into two 1/4 cup feedings for your dog. You'll want to keep an eye on your dog to make sure it's not only eating it's food but that it's not eating your other dog's food too. This could result in a pudgy Yorkie.

Also, when you say "go out" are you referring to exercise and playtime or in generally be let out to use the bathroom? It really all depends on your dog. But for exercise and playtime you should try to either go on a decent walk or let them out to play a couple of times throughout the day. And be sure to provide toys for your Yorkie as well while inside the house.

As for your other dog, it really all depends on what breed it is. DogChannel.com has a lot of breed specific articles if you wanted a good resource on dog care.

Teach Your Dog (And Yourself) Some New Tricks With Online Dog Training Programs

      • Hi Alice,

A yorkie does not need too many calories, only maybe 1/2 cup to 1 cup of good food daily but make sure it has all the vitamins and minerals it needs to be healthy.

Most dogs need to go out about every 3 to 4 hours.

I put a link below where you can get a free dog owners manual.

      • I dont know because my dogs all eat human food . I suggest human foods for your yorkies . My dogs (i have 5) all eat this secret recipe: (delicious and healthy)

        - ground beef
        - olive oil
        - cheese
        - rice
        - carrots
        - salt & pepper

I recommend that recipe because its healthy and easy to make. It is great for bigger dogs but you just have to give your yorkies less. As for taking them out i'd say about once a day .

      • I have a miniature yorkie. She ways 4 lbs. I feed her half a cup every day and let her out every 4 hours when possible but she can go 8 hrs without peeing. I have a miniature pom who ways 7 lbs and eats a cup a day and goes out every 4 hours and can hold it for 10.

      • i love agility!!!!!!!!!!! i have a shihtzu and shes pretty good at agility and I'm 8 and were gonna go in agilty and dog shows and my shih tzus the only dog i have and i like all the agility equiment

      • We love the seesaw & the tunnels.

Hurdles are great to have at home.

      • Bindi loves to work for her squeaky duck. Its her favorite toy, she'll take that before yummy treats. To keep it special she only gets it for a reward when we're working.

Max being a lab will do anything for food.

It really depends on the dog. Find what really gets your dog motivated and use that as a reward.

      • As far as training tools are concerned, you will have to figure out what works best for your dog, because each is different.
One of my shelties just loves treats and works best with high value treats for a reward. Her brother/littermate could care less about the food he likes his frisbee, so we reward him with that.
Our third sheltie is quite shy (he is a rescue) so toys don't work for him either. He likes treats, but mostly wants to please me so lots of "good boy!'s" works along with pets and sometimes treats.
I started my first two with a clicker. It works great because you can mark the correct behavior immediately. Most trainers today start their puppies off with clicker training.

Good luck and have fun. Aussies are great agility dogs!

Dog Health Questions: Indoor/outdoor dog training?

Why does my 5 yo female chihuahua poop on furniture, but will urinate on her wee pad as she was trained? Once or twice a year, she'll poop on the pad as she should and is wildly praised. I believe her bad behavior has to do with dominance, but I have no idea how to handle it.

Also, she is trained for both indoors and outdoors. When the weather is too cold or snowy, I'll take her out briefly to let her experience the cold and she always runs back to the door. She'll urinate on the paper once she's in, but will not deficate. Most of the time, I'll find it after the fact, but on occasion, I'll catch her in the act. I've tried everything: a low growl, "No"; direct her to the paper; abruptly flip her on her back; transfer the stool to the paper and use phases such as "good girl"; ignore her; etc--in all sorts of combinations. She'll sulk, then go to the pad, urinate for which I praise her and all is right in her world once again. HELP!

      Dog Training - Basics

      Recommended Answer:
Sounds like your dog is confused.

In her eyes... you've taught her it's okay to potty in the house. When she soils the puppy pad, you switch it for a nice clean new one and praise her. Well, the couch seems pretty much the same. She goes potty, you clean it up. Fresh clean place to potty!

I understand pads are popular with little dogs, but this is why I do not use them and insist my dogs go outside only. Most dogs have a hard time differentiating between the potty pad and the rest of your house.

Dog Training Tips - Training Dogs For Your Own Benefit

      • She seems to think it is ok to poop wherever she wants. You should start from the beginning with potty training.

        Good luck!!!

      • Sounds like you are not in charge, or the alpha, in your home.
You need to get back to basics and make her understand you are the boss, and she is in your pack.
Get a good book on pack order and how to be the boss.

      • Oh please - stop with the dominance and flipping her on her back - she's a chihuahua for goodness sake, what's to dominate? That is so overdone and over used - Cesar Millan should be shot for bringing everything down to dominance, alpha and "calm state" - the guys not a trainer, just a t.v. actor.

Your dog sounds confused - you vary her routine so much, in, out, weewee pads and papers sometimes - stick to one thing no matter what the weather and stop messing with her mind. Get her on a specific routine - wake up, go out, eat, go out, before bed, go out - same routine - watch for signs she has to go potty and base the daily routine with her around that - she's a dog, you're a human - you can figure this out and potty train the poor thing.

      • You need to prohibit access to places your dog has accidents, period. Confine the dog and gradually increase the roaming space. If the dog backsteps, so does the freedom to roam the house. You have to take control of this situation and make a better effort to stop it.

It would probably be better if you got a job at a local dog training facility (one that focuses on dog training, not petco or petsmart) and read behavior books on your own. I'm reading a really good book "The Dog's Mind" by Bruce Fogle.

        good luck and have fun!

      • Sorry, I don't know for certain. Their methods are strictly positive reinforcement, and in my experience this is fairly ineffective, but I understand that some people believe in them. It's not a school I would attend, but if that's your prefered method, it looks fairly legit.

Have you considered this place? I haven't taken any courses here, but have met many of the staff and found them to be professional and capable individuals who have a lot of respect for their dogs.
        http://www.tomrose.com/

      • It doesn't look bad, at least it has some accreditation. I have definitely seen worse. Email them and ask about their methods. Of course you would need lots of hands on training also

      • Its a correspondence course and you don't learn dog training filling in paperwork and doing paper based assignments..........it is yet one more business who has jumped on the bandwagon of people wanting animal related jobs.........it says nothing about the 'certificate and diplomas' being part of the accredited framework.....and they need to be and it is very easy for a real college to do this...........this unfortunately is another way to 'con' the general public that the trainer/behaviourist is qualified....you can go into photshop and produce your own diploma which would just be the same, except you haven't paid someone else for the privilege of printing it...........dog training is a practical skill, not paper based and certainly not a tick list, pay your money and get your 'qualification' nor is it a buy a membership.............go and ask a quality trainer if you can assist or a local dog training club, you will learn more in a month than you will ever learn on this course.........as putting paper qualifications into reality is very different...........and I am not apposed to academic learning I teach animal behaviour at a University where the students do four years and have a one year placement and I have four students on their final year placement at my centre doing practical work..and every one of them has also done practical work at animal related businesses, like the zoo, wild life trust, rescue centres or with dog clubs and trainers.when they finish their degree it will mean something real.......many of these students fail in the first 6 months, great at the academic work however once assessed 'doing' the work they just can't do it, haven't got the natural instincts needed..my advice is don't waste your money not on this one anyway

Dog Health Questions: Hiding a small dog/training to use litter box?

I am taking my dog from my mom's house but my current apartment has a very strict no pet policy. I don't move until the end of July so I have to "hide" her until then. She is very small, weighing only 4 pounds, but she tends to bark at anything and everything when I take her outside. She also has to go outside about once an hour. I think it's going to be impossible to keep her hidden for almost 2 months. Is it possible to train her to use a litter box? I think that is going to be my only way to avoid a hefty fee. She is 5 years old so she is completely potty trained. Any suggestions/ideas?

Secrets to Dog Training Review - Is it Really the Best Dog Training Program?

      Recommended Answer:
      Suggestions?

Don't do it. You WILL get caught, plus the fact it's cruel- would you like to be kept in an apartment with no exercise for two months?

It's two months (well, less than that)- just keep the dog at your mum's house until you move. You WILL get caught, you WILL incur a fine, and you may even be chucked out before you intend to move.

      Dog Training Fundamentals

      • don't leave the food/water down all day long. feed her in the morning and when she walks away, pick it up. feed her again at dinner time and do the same, pick it up when she walks away. pick the water up about 2 hours before bed time. Might want to ask mom to hang on to her until you move. Never tried the litter box myself.

Dog Health Questions: Neep Help! Dog Training tips?

I have a dog named max. he is a very big dog. when he was a puppy we put in a electric fence. we have recently moved to a place without a fence of any kind. Our new neighborhood has many cats and people bring there dogs for walks past our house. there have been many instances when max has gotten off the leash and has almost attacked
dogs and cats. recently he bit a person while not severe it has disturbed me to a point where i have to do something i really need help please send me a tip on how to train his so he is not as agressive and protective.

Dog Training Videos - A Great Way to Learn How to Obedience Train Your Dog

      Recommended Answer:
My first suggestion is to get all the "Dog Whisperer" videos you can get your hands on. Dog aggression is a potentially dangerous issue, and acting appropriately now is critical.

Dogs are always doing their best. Your dog probably needs more leadership from you and your family. You did not say what breed it is, but if it has not been trained in any way, your dog will do what comes naturally to him. That may not be the best thing.

Obedience training and lots of interaction that shows you are a firm but loving leader will help your dog learn his boundaries, which he clearly lacks at this time.

This is not a fast and easy task, even if Cesar makes it look easy. It requires commitment and effort on your part. But it will be worth it.

How to Begin a Dog Training Career

      • You might want to check the local dog training program and take him in for a class. They will teach you how to be in control and him to be obedient. Good luck

      • Put a new fence up. Take him to dog classes you could find some on the internet or ask people around. Take him for walks really early and late when there are not many people around that way he cant really attack any one. Tell him off when he does something wrong and praise when he is nice.

        hope i helped :)

      • That sounds like a very serious issue. I would suggest you to train your dog to avoid unnecessary problems with your neighbors and authority.

Dog Health Questions: Dog training question???PLZ HELP!!!?

we just got a chihuahua he is supposevly a year old. he is HALF newspaper trained in fact he just made an accident on the floor. we dont want to get rid of him but dont want him pooping on the floor. how do you train a dog to potty outside??? we will get rid of him if he doesnt improve

Dog Training Book - Why Buy One? When Everything is Free Online!

      Recommended Answer:
"we will get rid of him if he doesnt improve"

Pretty harsh. It is not the dog's fault that he is not trained. It is the fault of his previous owner. Don't follow in that person's footsteps!
If you don't know how to train this dog, an obedience class could be helpful, and a book on potty training.

ETA: You may not know this, but capital letters on the Internet is the equivalent of shouting. Why are you shouting at us? We are suggesting you train your dog. That is what will stop him pooping and peeing everywhere. We have no other answer for you. You cannot train a dog through questions on the Internet, you have to get personally involved to be successful. Once again, find a trainer to help you.

And it is harsh to get rid of a dog because the owner cannot figure out how to train him. That is why there are so many dogs dying in shelters.

      Show Dog Training

      • these things takes time he should had been trained be for you bought him , and you don't know how old he is to be exact what happened to the certificate that should had came with the dog ? you don't really know how old this dog is so it may take longer to train him when they dogs are older its harder to train unlike pups.. best thing to do since he is a little dog anyway when you see him sniffing around your home and it looks as if he is going to cock- his leg up pick him up and put him out doors or you can leave the door open at all times.

      • People who get rid of dogs for pooing in the house are irresponsible. He obviously isn't housebroken. You need to buy a crate and crate train him. You need to take him out every two hours to start then after you see how often he goes, you can take him out less. Always have treats in your pocket and give him a treat when he poos and pees outside. he needs to connect that it is rewarding to go outside. Eventually he will only go outside. If you SEE him go inside say No! then pick him up and take him straight outside. If you do not see him but he has an accident you can not yell at him. It isn't his fault. You need to train him because obviously he wasn't trained. Don't use paper. Think about it, you will have t train him 2 times. It is easier to just train once to directly go outside. If you give up and get rid of him, take him to a "no kill" shelter.

      • Being consistent and have patience. When you take him out, take him to the same spot every time and never take him to this spot to play. Have another area for that. While you are out there do not talk or play with him. Once he pees or poops pick him up and take him inside and give a small treat. Do this several times a day, after he wakes up from naps, plays, eats or you observe him walking around looking like he needs to go. If you do this CONSISTENTLY for a week you should be ok. Remember never to shove his face into it. If and when he has accidents before you get him trained just immediately pick him up and take him outside to his spot. He won't have to go now but just stay a minute or so then pick him up and take inside. Hope this helps.

      • First of all, take the carpet away, he cant poop on its if its not there.
1 year old dogs should be "easy" to train, compared to a puppy.

On how to housetrain the dog, there are many ways.
Its possible to do it with some dedicaion, maybe perfect time for you
to show you really want/can take care of a dog, with time and patience

      • Some one told me you can train chihuahuas to use a cat litter box.

      • give him lots of spaghetti

The Right Information Is the Key To Effective Dog Training - Dogproblems Reviewed

      Recommended Answer:
If you want to rule through force and fear, then yeah, go for the Dog Whisperer. If you prefer to have a good relationship with your dog and rule through mutual respect, I'd recommend something else.
I haven't read the book you show there, so I can't comment on that. A lot of dog training books that give step by step directions are the same, it's your overall philosophy that counts. Any book with step-by-step directions can be adapted to your personal philosophy, it's just ideas on how to get the dog to understand what you want. It's how you go about making them want to do what you want that matters.
Do you want to teach your dog that he gets rewarded for doing what you want, or that he gets punished for NOT doing what you want? There is a very real difference.

With that in mind, I'm not going to recommend any step-by-step books, but instead some books about the philosophy of training, how to understand your dog and help him better understand you, and how to maintain an excellent relationship with your dog.

      • i don't remember the authors name, but there is a book that i have gotten at the county library that is titled family dog,it was a great help for me, there was several other titles by the same author.

      • There's a totally awesome book out there called 'Purely Positive Training' by Sheila Booth that gives very detailed instructions for training. If more people bought and read this book, and then actually had the brains to apply what she says, there would be a lot less dogs labeled untrainable turned in to shelters to be killed. Give it a try.

      • the book in your link is a fun book for trick training and focusing a high energy dog to some 'work'
my personal favorite for training is the Monks of New Skete,,they train German Shepards but the methods are universal for all animals

2nd would be something from Dog Whisperer,,,though i question the INSTANT effect tv provides,,in all my years of training and helping customers,,i realize, myself included, that we as humans put too much humanization on our pets and spoil them to destructive behavior

      • I like Ceasar Milan "The dog whisper" I trained my dogs like he does before i heard of him he nakes alot of good points some dont like how he does things but people i know that had problem dogs and tried his book had better dogs after. Good luck

Dog Health Questions: The best treats for small dog training?

My mom bought me two dogs (I'm 15) and I have to train them.
They're Yorkie-Pomeranian mixes, so they're small, and I was wondering what the best treat there is to give them? Like, for when I'm training them, and I give them praise and a treat - what are some good brands? (Treats that are quick for them to eat)Thanks! :)

      Puppy and Dog Training

      Recommended Answer:
We use Zuke's Mini Naturals as training treats. They are healthy with no corn, wheat or soy in the ingredients. We have a Papillion (7 lbs). The treats are tiny, soft and easy to chew so the dogs eats them up quickly, only 2 calories each. During our training class, because he gets so many, we usually break them in half with our thumb nail so he doesn't come home FULL of treats.

Secrets of Dog Training Professionals - Why Use Food?

      • Very small pieces of cheese are good for training dogs, but you will have to be careful that they do not eat too much.

      • Bonio Dog Biscuits with Chicken

      • I have had great success with freeze-dried liver treats. They are a bit stinky (the dogs LOVE this so they work extra hard for the treat) but they are dry so not messy at all, and they can be cut up into tiny pieces and don't crumble like a biscuit would. I also appreciate that they are 100% beef liver, no extra ingredients, preservatives or fillers. I get these liver treats at PetSmart or Petco, the ones I buy come in a large tub and it lasts a very long time.
        http://www.petco.com/product/6439/Gimbor…

Since liver does have a high vitamin A content, it's possible for them to have too much of it, so I'd rotate this treat with other things such as cheese, boiled chicken or other dry treats.

      • really small cats!!!!!!!!!

      • if you go to a local pet store, or even a petco or something, they have actual treats that are made for training. doggie treats (milkbones and such) are very very fattening. one milkbone= half a bowl of dry food. and its not good to give table food bc its not good for them, (higher cholesterol, higher protein-some dogs can break down the protein as much as other dogs can)

the training treats are very small, like a pellet, and low in fat. look into it, goodluck :)

      • then that needs to be dealt so hard that hes pinched a nerve for your best dogs

        take your dog

      • i use natures recipe training treats and break into thirds for mine.

      • You can try a piece of small chicken or a tiny treat the size of a dime.

      • I would try bacon strips!(dog food, not actual bacon)
They worked amazing for my terrier
he knows how to sit, shake hands, roll over, and jump!

      • You should make sure that the dog treats are small enough for your dogs to easily eat them. And, because you'll be training them, you don't want to give them so many that they gain too much weight.

Why not make your own healthy dog treats. Go to the site below for an easy dog treat recipe...

Dog Health Questions: 15 y/o dog training?

I'm fifteen years old and I want to start a dog training business.

My experience includes training two highly obedient, well-mannered dogs, both easy-to-train golden retreivers. I am mature and organized, enough so to train one or two dogs over the summer and keep a schedule and track payment.

I was thinking of using a program along the lines of (7) [1] hour lessons over the course of [7] weeks. I would consider charging $75-$100 per session. (about $10-$15/hour)

I would create a curriculum and incorporate a member(s) of the family into the lessons.

Dog Training: Tips and Tricks the Professionals Use

        Recommended Answer:
I work with a trainer who has been breeding, showing and training dogs for 25+ years. She has titled dogs in conformation, obedience (up to UDX), agiltiy and now Rally-O. She runs a 7 week class, one hour each week, with a proper cirriculum and charges each individual only $50 for the 7 week course.

Do you have experience in the obedience ring? Have you title a dog in obedience yet? These are criteria I would certainly consider when deciding what trainer to go with and if the price were acceptable. If you have not done this yet, maybe you should consider lowering your cost to start to a reasonable amount which reflects your credentials and experience. Goldens are lovely dogs, but they are also a breed very easy to train. Are you able to assist an owner with a high energy border collie and isn't able to figure out how to properly handle and train a dog with such a high drive?

Are you a member of any local training clubs? Do you have respected trainers who will back you up and agree that you are fully capable of handling a training class with potentially any breed of dog? This is something else that would greatly benefit you.

I'm not trying to shoot down the idea and I'm not saying that you aren't possibly capable, it's just that many feel that because they can train their own dog, that they can teach others, but the truth is that dogs vary from breed to breed and you need to be well educated on the possible breeds that could come to you.

Crate Training Your Dogs - Ultimate Dog Training Method

        • What kind of method do you use to train dogs?

75$-100$ is a good price, but it depends on what you are training the dog to do. trust me if you have trained that many dogs, then you can probably start a business. (some people think that 15 is to young.) well good luck!

        • Keep in mind that there is a world of difference between training a dog tricks and doing true obedience training. This is not to insult you, your skills or your accomplishments. It's just that many people who bring their dogs in for obedience training have already taught their dogs to sit, lie, give paw, stay, etc. But those dogs are also far more willing to break those commands. That is, the dog may sit, but then promptly get up. A truly obedient dog will sit and stay seated. If not, the owner knows how to correct the dog and keep him in the position until released.

You also have Golden Retrievers. As you admitted, these wonderful dogs are, in general, far easier to train. Try working with a tougher breed, like Dalmatians. If you have success with them, then I will not doubt your skills at all.

As you are 15, I would actually recommend you seeking work with a professional trainer. Having just two dogs trained, while a start, would not impress me at all (sorry) and I would not use your services. However, if you gain experience working with a professional trainer who has worked with many dogs, then you can build up your c.v. and advertise in a year or so as a "dog trainer".

You are headed in the right direction, but at present, you do not have enough experience. Don't rush it - the experience you gain working at shelters or with a dog trainer will prove invaluable.

          Good luck!

        • You realize you'll have to apply for a small business license and file taxes with the IRS or you can get in a lot of trouble, right?

I don't think a lot of people will want to hire a kid who happened to teach his dogs to sit and stay to train their pet. You should wait until you're older. And why on earth would they pay those prices to someone with no background, no training, no certification (yes, REAL dog trainers are certified and take classes for it) ?

          It's a nice idea, but I don't think it's a good one.
