Dog Health Questions: How to stop my dog from jumping up and bite my clothes and hands from over excitement?

My 4 months old puppy likes to jump up to bite my clothes and bite my hands, and it really hurts! She leave tiny holes on my clothes or sometimes a few cm rip. I tried ignoring her and avoid eye contact like in the dog training book says but she bite my pants and tug it instead. I say no and shove her away but she still jump back up more furious each time. I tried kneeing her in the chest but she also did the same. Please help, I'm at the end of the rope here :(

Small Dog Training Advice

Recommended Answer:
Consistently give a high-pitched yelp "ow!" the instant her teeth touch you, turn your back and go off and find something else to do, ignoring her for 10 minutes or so. She can't jump back more furious if you are going away from her. Be patient; you will get results but it won't happen overnight.

Don't slap her. ANY IDIOT can hit dogs in order to control them. Don't shove her, she will only perceive that as an invitation to play rougher...or worse, it will make her combative.

Even after she learns to control her bite, she might still jump on you. In that case, turn to the side and walk calmly but deliberately into her (toward her) which sends a message that you are in charge of your "space". Walking into her will affect her balance a little bit, like kneeing her in the chest, but not so violently.

Edit: If you must spray your dog, don't spray her in the face. Jeez, you could put out her eye like that.

Dog Training Courses - Which One is Right For You?

  • Hopefully your dog will grow out of it. You can read all the books you want about dog training, but some dogs are just stubborn. My dog is still doing this at a year old. Don't hit the dog, it'll make it worse. The best thing you can do is manage it and hope she'll stop doing it.
When she does this, tell her to sit. Hopefully she'll sit.
The best way is to distract her with something. Find a toy and throw it. She just wants to play.

  • An innate canine impulse, jumping up serves two purposes for dogs: it's a way to show excitement, and it allows for an up close and personal sniff of scent glands in the human face. Combine the two--your pup's excited you're home from work and craves a whiff of your natural aroma--and the result is one jumpy dog.

    Here's a treatment for jumping up http://tinyurl.com/5ov3wb
    And here's for biting http://tinyurl.com/5hqnde

  • Make leaving and coming home completely unemotional. When you leave do not acknowledge her, and when you come home ignore and walk away from her until she is calm, then pet and greet her. She views your leaving as an unwanted occurrence, so is eager to please you when she gets home. Show her that the way you wished to be greeted is by a calm dog. It wont happen overnight, but she is young and should pick this up quickly. Good luck!!

  • LOL saying no and pushing her away is not ignoring her!!

Do you have a dog crate/cage? get one! get her used to it - and teach her to only come out when calm.

Also teach her to sit - it's VITAL and as Dr Dunbar (dog trainer) says - when a dog is sitting it can't be doing anything else!

Use a food reward - get her to sit before anything she wants, doors opened, walks, pats, food etc.

Ensure she has LOTS of exercise each day. (what breed is she?)

As a last resort try a water spray with lemon in her face - but that's nasty and I'd try to not use that.

  • What you are doing seems like a game to her.
When she bites, give her a sharp slap (not too hard) on her nose (a sensitive part of the dog's anatomy) and shout NO! or BAD!
It's all in the tone of voice.

  • You can send him to dog obedience classes or refer to dog training videos in http://www.dogexpertreveal.com

  • Keep a 4 foot leash on your puppy and when she goes to jump step on the leash, it should only take a few times of doing this before she gets it.

  • a spray water bottle in her face every time she jumps up!

Dog Health Questions: What event should I get my dog into?

I have a pekingese/dachshund mix (she has more of the peke personality I think - she is very laid back) she is 2 years old and listens SO well. She is always off lead with me, rarely leaves my side, comes when called, is very obedient and LOVES to run.
I'm going to get us involved with the local dog training club, but I cant figure out which event she would enjoy more.
I was thinking flyball, because she loves to run, but she's never been a tennis ball dog.
Obedience is always a winner, but I was hoping for something where she could get more engery out. She isn't very "over the top" active, but she loves to move!
Any other ideas? She listens (sit and stay and such) when she wants to, but is just such a great dog. She is SO intuned to me and rarely leaves my side. I just want her to be happy and have fun and get to play with other dogs and stimulate her brain. She is incredibly smart.

Thanks so much for your input!

GO FOR AGILITY!!!

I live up in Washington State and our NW agility community is privileged to have a "killer" Peke running up here. Della Rae is a great little dog and will probably be the first MACH (Master Agility Champion) in the history of the breed.

Take a look at their article on the National Club's website.

  • Check out on the internet (google it) dog clubs they will have the best answer for you.. check out the clubs before joining.. and talk with people in them. try the RSPCA your local vet can assist

  • I don't know

  • Hi,
Im not sure if you are anywhere near one but sometimes there are agility dog events.
If she listens well it should help.
She will be asked to jump over things and go in round tunnel things i hope this helps
All I can think of. Cya

  • Try Agility. She would love it! It's running, jumping, and all sorts of fun objects with you right by her side the whole time! Fun for all!

  • You could try Rally. It's kind of an in between for traditional obedience and agility. If you google Rally or Rally-O, you'll come up with lots of stuff. Also the AKC has a lot of information available (google AKC Rally-O).

While you're poking around on the AKC website, look at earthdog trials. Those might be cool for a dachshund mix.

I am waiting for a rally class to open up in my area to get my rottweiler involved. Out of my five dogs, he's the most driven for something like that. :)

Dog Health Questions: Hunting dog training?

I'm starting to train my fully grown dog to squirrel hunt. He does well in the yard but when i take him to the woods he gets really excited and takes off running so far I can't hear him anymore. How do I train him to stay close to me? Say 50yds?

Are Dog Training Collars Humane

Recommended Answer:
Well that's a problem with most hunting dogs.. Especially if it's a hound when it goes into "hunting mode" they usually block off their hearing and focus on the scent.... There really is only a few options here and that's either to keep up with him.... I've seen plenty of hunter have their hounds on leashes too.....

Beginner Dog Training Classes

  • I'm not a expert but I'd say you need to get close so he/she won't run off too far. But if that doesn't work teach him/her his/her boundries! And if that won't work... shock collar. Just kidding but try something. Don't do too much fliping back and fourth.

Dog Health Questions: Would german shepherds be nice without training?

i was thinking of getting a gsd since my brothers friend has the german shepherd couple and the dog is pregnant he asked him if he wanted one,but iv been doing some reserch and saw alot of gsd attacks .that got me scared cause i wana be able to take it out around people, but i dont want to take the risk of it biting someone and i dont think there are any dog training clases nearby .
i dont know what to do ?
should i get one or not

The Dog Training Things You Should Do and the Ones You Shouldn't

Recommended Answer:
Any dog can be mean and attack it if isnt trained properly.

You just need to socialize the dog well, get him used to many people, dogs etc. Dont keep him isolated. Also if it will be male, get him fixed. most of the GSD attacks you saw are probably from schutzhund..the kind of work the police dogs do.

You really should not worry, just do research on how to socialize puppies.
UNLESS the parents have bad temperments, then you may have to work harder with your puppy.

Free Dog Training Tip - Proven Tips To Train Your Dog

  • Why not check out a library book or dig deep into the internet on training. The secret to a well loved and liked dog is "training." Even if you are a beginner you can learn to train with a mentor or enough books read to start training your puppy. Unless you are willing to go the extra miles and learn about what it takes to care and train, feed, groom, vet care etc. I would wait until you are ready. Just because someone is "giving away" a pup doesn't mean you should get one. Do your research and find out just how much having a puppy costs. The figures will amaze you.

  • The only reason you see a lot of German Shepherd attacks is because that is what people want to read. You will also see a lot of "pit bull" and Rottweiler attacks because that is what people want to read. I've seen more Labradors, small dogs and Goldens that are aggressive but no one is afraid them, any dog could be aggressive and attack if they aren't properly trained and socialized. . If the Shepherd is well socialized and trained then it could be a very friendly, well balanced dog.

  • If you are scared of the dog, don't purchase one in the first place. Chances are the dog will sense your fear in the end and take advantage of it. On the other hand, German Shepherds are a wonderful and loyal breed of dog.

They are very much devoted towards their owner and do well around smaller children. Just as any breed of dog needs.. training is a MUST.
Not only does it teach your dog this and that, it keeps them in line.

  • If you have never trained a dog, please don't start with a German Shepherd, especially since you already have misgivings.
You also don't have to take a class to train a dog. Read Don't Shoot the Dog! by Karen Pryor for positive reinforcement training tips. She's brilliant and the book is well written.

Dog Health Questions: Dog training questions?

OK Now that I know what to do with my dogs I have more questions. How much should yorkies eat and 2 or 3 times a day. Also just how often should I let them out???? BTW if my other dog is half the size a yorkie how much should it eat???

Helpful Tips on Dog Training

Recommended Answer:
Yorkies generally should eat 1⁄4 to 1⁄2 cup of food daily. What you might want to do it break it into two 1/4 cup feedings for your dog. You'll want to keep an eye on your dog to make sure it's not only eating it's food but that it's not eating your other dog's food too. This could result in a pudgy Yorkie.

Also, when you say "go out" are you referring to exercise and playtime or in generally be let out to use the bathroom? It really all depends on your dog. But for exercise and playtime you should try to either go on a decent walk or let them out to play a couple of times throughout the day. And be sure to provide toys for your Yorkie as well while inside the house.

As for your other dog, it really all depends on what breed it is. DogChannel.com has a lot of breed specific articles if you wanted a good resource on dog care.

Teach Your Dog (And Yourself) Some New Tricks With Online Dog Training Programs

  • Hi Alice,

A yorkie does not need too many calories, only maybe 1/2 cup to 1 cup of good food daily but make sure it has all the vitamins and minerals it needs to be healthy.

Most dogs need to go out about every 3 to 4 hours.

I put a link below where you can get a free dog owners manual.

  • I dont know because my dogs all eat human food . I suggest human foods for your yorkies . My dogs (i have 5) all eat this secret recipe: (delicious and healthy)

    - ground beef
    - olive oil
    - cheese
    - rice
    - carrots
    - salt & pepper

I recommend that recipe because its healthy and easy to make. It is great for bigger dogs but you just have to give your yorkies less. As for taking them out i'd say about once a day .

  • I have a miniature yorkie. She ways 4 lbs. I feed her half a cup every day and let her out every 4 hours when possible but she can go 8 hrs without peeing. I have a miniature pom who ways 7 lbs and eats a cup a day and goes out every 4 hours and can hold it for 10.

Dog Health Questions: What is drive in puppy training?

Also, what is steadiness in Adult dog training? I'm doing a research project in animal science about how quail are used for dog training.

Protection Dog Training - Frequently Asked Questions

    Recommended Answer:
drive means prey drive. its how a puppy reacts to small, fast moving objects. some breeds are bred to have a higher prey drive like herding/shepherding dogs. although its a mainly inherited trait so they are born knowing how to hunt.

steadiness is to do with how easily scared they are. this is a trait they often needed for military, police and schutzhund work

    Choosing Your Dog Training Video

    • I would say that "drive" might be equated with the pup's willingness to learn, or desire to learn. Steadiness might refer to the dog's ability to focus on the task at hand rather than be distracted by every little movement or sound that might interfere.

    • "Drive" usually refers to as Prey Drive, which means that they will stalk prey. Usually sight hounds will do this, or any dog breed that is bred to, will do this by instinct. But, you can also teach voice commands to tell your dog to stalk.I think.

Dog Health Questions: Neep Help! Dog Training tips?

I have a dog named max. he is a very big dog. when he was a puppy we put in a electric fence. we have recently moved to a place without a fence of any kind. Our new neighborhood has many cats and people bring there dogs for walks past our house. there have been many instances when max has gotten off the leash and has almost attacked
dogs and cats. recently he bit a person while not severe it has disturbed me to a point where i have to do something i really need help please send me a tip on how to train his so he is not as agressive and protective.

Dog Training Videos - A Great Way to Learn How to Obedience Train Your Dog

    Recommended Answer:
My first suggestion is to get all the "Dog Whisperer" videos you can get your hands on. Dog aggression is a potentially dangerous issue, and acting appropriately now is critical.

Dogs are always doing their best. Your dog probably needs more leadership from you and your family. You did not say what breed it is, but if it has not been trained in any way, your dog will do what comes naturally to him. That may not be the best thing.

Obedience training and lots of interaction that shows you are a firm but loving leader will help your dog learn his boundaries, which he clearly lacks at this time.

This is not a fast and easy task, even if Cesar makes it look easy. It requires commitment and effort on your part. But it will be worth it.

How to Begin a Dog Training Career

    • You might want to check the local dog training program and take him in for a class. They will teach you how to be in control and him to be obedient. Good luck

    • Put a new fence up. Take him to dog classes you could find some on the internet or ask people around. Take him for walks really early and late when there are not many people around that way he cant really attack any one. Tell him off when he does something wrong and praise when he is nice.

      hope i helped :)

    • That sounds like a very serious issue. I would suggest you to train your dog to avoid unnecessary problems with your neighbors and authority.

A Review of Secrets to Dog Training

    • OK, first, see if there any reasonably priced trainers in your area, I have done drills with dogs that were profesionally trained or where the owner went through a training course with a profesional trainer, and the dogs are superior to dogs trained from a book, not that you would not try, but my brother had a Lab, his name was Strike, Sky Watch Radar's Lucky Strike in full, I know he had more than 750 points in field trials, just not sure how many more, plus this dog kicked *** in the field (my brother actually used to show him off by having him return birds to other hunters who didn't have dogs, on whistle signals alone; this dog knew right from left by whistle better than people I have worked with know it by word), he was trained by Bill Cox of Labs Unlimited in Valparaiso IN (219) 464-3647 not sure if he trains pointers or not but he might steer you right and he won't mind being advertised

There is an online magazine on this site that is very informative. You can also search all of their back issues.

"The complete guide to bird dog training" by John R Falk is one of the more popular training books. It's extremely comprehensive, teaching you what kind of dog to pick, how to pick from a litter, how to train the different breeds, etc.

One of the best tools i've found for dog training is a show called "The Dog Whisperer" by Cesar Millan. His show is on the national geographic channel (which I don't get). I picked up Season 1 of his show on ebay for 35 bucks. It's worth every penny. This will teach you how to get inside your dogs mind and to understand how they think. If you don't get anything else, get this dvd set.

Dog Health Questions: Media dog training colleges?!?

What colleges would you have to go to if you want to become a media dog trainer for like movies, commercials,so on.do you even have to go to college to become one.thank you

The Main Benefits Of Dog Training

    Recommended Answer:
There are not any colleges that have a major for dog training. However, some colleges do have animal behavior/ animal psychology or animal science degrees. A lot of professional animal trainers have degrees in Psychology or Animal Sciences.

Media dog training is a very difficult field to get into and you will need years of professional experience before you can even get an entry level job.

Dog Training Schools - Which Dogs Are Best Suited

    • I doubt there is any college that teaches animal training. You should start by reading as many training books as possible and taking a dog through obedience training. Once you learn how to teach a dog the basic commands you can easily teach it other behaviors by using the same techniques. It takes a lot of time and patience.

Dog Health Questions: Should I reconsider taking my dog to school?

I am a senior and we have a demonstration speach to do. I love dog training so I decided to bring my dog Missie in to show how to train a dog. She is an attention whore though. Im afraid she will be to busy sucking up all the attention that she wont do the commands. Am I just worrying too much or is their really a problem here?

    Recommended Answer:
How she will behave totally depends on your dog. My female is the perfect princess dog and will show off how well behaved she is to the amazement of many watching. My male is usually class clown. Just showing that a dog can be well trained will be a good lesson for many of your fellow students. One trick I always like to show is the long down - people are amazed to watch a dog statue sit for several minutes.

    Have fun!

    • Yes, you should go. The trainers will be there to help you out. You might want to exercise her first though to cut down on her energy levels when she goes in.

    • not at all IF she is calm so do NOT be nervous as a dog can sense that a mile away.

    • Test it out. Invite all of your friends to your house and see if she'll listen to you. If she does, she should be okay. Also, she'll be separated from the crowd, because I'm guessing there will be room between you and the crowd, so it's not like she can be pet and lick them and everything.

Dog Health Questions: The role of genetics in dog training?

I asked this a few days ago and got only a few answers:
It is a proven fact that genetics play a part in the training and behavior of dogs. A dog with a history of well tempered, trainable dogs in its background will have these same characteristics to an extent.

However, what if a dog with a good genetic background falls into the wrong hands or situation early in life. For example, if that dog is not well socialized when it is young, will its genetics enable its rehabilitation once it is removed from that situation and provided with the proper training and handling? Can its past be overcome by its good breeding? If so, is it expedited by genetics?

Choosing an Online Dog Training Program

    Recommended Answer:
Yes, since genetics is the basis of all temperament issues in dogs, even the ones that have the genetic capability will bounce back, most of the time, and become the dog they were meant to be in competent hands.
I have seen dogs with EXCELLENT genetics stay away from any training and exposure to life and jump right into it with both feet once they were exposed to it by good trainers...bomb proof temperament...great genetics!!! Hope I helped.

A Beginner's Guide to Dog Training

    • It really depends on the dog and the breed. Siberian huskies, for example, have insanely high prey drives. mine have been raised around my maine Coons so they are wonderful with cats; while my males littermate has actually killed two. Terriers fall into the same category, excaept it is proven that they tend to take abuse/neglect/abandonmant more "personally", therefore tend to have more difficulty working out the kinks if not properly trained and socialized early. My female Sibe is an abuse rescue. I adopted her @ amlost 5 months old. i am a certified trainer, and I still have issues with her and she is almost 5 yrs old now. there is no guarantee that ANY dog will turn out ANY specific way, even when they are bred correctly. it is all about the specific personality, the socialization and training they recieve, and the enviornmant they are provided. Genetics DO play a role to an extent, but it is not a guarantee you will be able to get your Lab to swim just because he is a "water dog".

    • Not beyond the basics.

Only when work on real breed specifics comes in is there any major differences.
A Peke CAN be rote-trained to run out & circle behind a flock but it will never make even a decent herder.
Buzzwords like "rehabilitation" doesn't mean anything more than training."Socializing" is another...it doesn't mean tea-parties w/da udder doggies,it just means exposure to new situations. Which CAN be done at any point...by competent humans.

Dog Health Questions: K9 Guard Dog Training - Advice?

So I live in a not so friendly neighbour hood. I am considering adopting one of the dogs I am fostering. I often do not like walking at night especially now that the sun is going down earlier and earlier, because I fear for my safety, as well as the safety of my current 15 lbs puppy.

Now I would never do something that would be bad for my dogs health, behavior, etc...

Now the puppy i'm considering adopting is going to be large and fairly intimidating looking.
She would make for a good watch dog as well as a good deterrent to creepers on walks. She would make me feel safe. Now I by no means know how to train a guard dog, and would NEVER consider doing it on my own. But I have looked up some on this and there is specific hard core training places that help to train you and your dog. I would like her to know when a threat is perceived or if I use a command that she would step in to action.

Now I wanted some advice on this as I am unsure about the whole idea. Anything is appreciated. Thank you.

    Are Dog Training Collars Humane

    Recommended Answer:
Well at least you are now saying that you can't train the dog yourself unlike your last question.

    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;…

You are still missing the point a little.
As Kaper says, a dog that is suitable to take forward for training is a very special dog, and that's not all of them. It's like with police dogs, very few make it through the training as they have to have a superb temperament to do this work. That is really not evident until the dog is a little older and this is why police pups are not even assessed until over 1 yr old to go forward for training.

I have at this very moment (came in yesterday) a guard dog (rottie) in my kitchen. He has gone lame and they would of put him down but we have taken him into rescue. His owner used to lock up parks late at night and the dog was employed to be with him. This dog is NO GUARD DOG. He has had no guard dog training and he lived in the family home with the guy and his kids. He is absolutely gorgeous and in fact a little bit of a woos.

If you are going to get a rottie as that is what you were talking about, then bring this dog up to be TOTALLY SOLID, friendly, sociable etc. I deal with rotties ALL the time... hundreds and I can tell you now if you just pulled tight on a rotts lead when walking down the road and showed anxiety through the lead then there would be few that didn't react and get the message. Hence we have to be so careful.

I know I was quite rude to you in your last question, but I ADORE this breed. Have had and worked with them for over 20 yrs and spend hours per day trying to promote the good side of these dogs. I don't need people that don't know what they are doing trying to do a bit of DIY guard dog training with a dog that has not even been temperament tested. A dog that goes forward for training has got to be SO sound. Yes I get rude because I do not want to see this breed banned.

Bring your rottie up with firm fair discipline and forget the "guard" dog bit. Go to schutzhund if you want and get shown and trained with your dog. The dog thinks of it is a sport and doesn't get aggressive at all. Great fun for all and you will learn lots and in the correct way.

I would never go to one of these Guard Dog Training Centres unless I totally trusted them.
Let me tell you something else. I have been bitten by one rottie in all that time, and he was being rehabilitated by a guy that is supposed to be one of the best in the UK. The dog was supposed to face off at me only - it didn't - it bit me in the arm. Even people like him get it wrong.

Add --- I can see now that the join dates are different, even though the user name is exactly the same. Time yahoo stopped duplicate user names tbh. No matter, I will leave it there as it adds to the debate.

Bad Dog Training Tricks - How to Correct Bad Dog Behavior

    • Any dog which lives in your house will warn you of intruders, then you can phone or shout for help.

Unfortunately if a dog lives outside, it will be silenced if anyone wants to break into your house.

I have had dogs forever, however because I am their pack leader and because of what I have read, I suspect that they would not intervene if I was attacked when I was walking them. My dogs sleep in my bedroom, they bark and nudge me if there is a noise outside when I am sleeping. I think that this is because they know that their pack leader is vulnerable.

    • In order to be able to train a dog to be a guard dog, you must first start with a dog with the proper temperament. This is genetic and is not easily found. I suggest if you truly want to invest in a guard dog and training, that you start with selecting a dog from a breeder who specifically breeds dogs suitable for this type of work.

Puppies are a craps shoot, even from a good breeder. This is why most Police departments select green dogs (1- 1 1/2 years old), so they can be better evaluated.

      Add-
I am not exactly sure what the question is, but that is my advice if you do decide to seek out training. It is expensive, and would be a huge waste of money if your dog is not suitable.

Dog Health Questions: Becoming more involved with dog training? Career?

    Good evening everyone.

I am, yet again, faced with a career dilemma. I simply cannot decide what I want to do, though I know I will be more than thrilled if I get to work with dogs for the rest of my life.

I know there are several ways to go about doing this, and my main interests lie in grooming and training.

My question here, though, is about training. How does one go about getting experience with training? I know there are plenty of options: mentoring, dog training academies, participating in other training classes, etc.

I have looked into various dog training academies, and have only been truly impressed by one (more impressed by the instructor than the academy itself). I will definitely be attending courses at this particular school, but this is not where I want to end my education.

I am making the decision to take time off college to do all of this. I know this will probably end up being a really bad decision on my part, but I will never know if I do not try, and college right now simply isn't working out for me.

So with all this in mind, what else can I do to expand my dog-related education?

I am interested in training dogs for movies, becoming more involved as a handler, possibly working for the AKC in some why (though I am split on what I think about the organization), possibly training police dogs or guide dogs...basically, I'm open to suggestions and would love to try it all.

Must-Have Tools For Easy And Fun Dog Training

    Recommended Answer:
Most of the people that I know around here that are trainers have become this based on their personal experience. They didn't go to school to learn how, but rather had a few dogs that they trained up and put into the show ring, agility, obedience, etc. That showed that they were capable and then they took on students. They then got quite a bit of a clientele built up, tho it did take time.

What I can tell you is that the couple people I am thinking of around here still had "day jobs" and they taught and trialed at night and on the weekend. They also had a facility they could train at.

I know that when I am looking into a trainer, their experience is what is going to draw me in first and foremost. The more active you become in dog related activities, the more experience you will gain and more likely you will be able to establish a business of your own or maybe be taken on as a trainer by a local kennel club to begin with. I also know BC people who became so active that they now work for the AKC too, but they were judges and so forth first before getting that far.

I say get into a local training club and see what connections you can make there. You would be amazed the resources you will find in dog training club like that!

    Good Luck!

How to Train Your Dogs - Some Basics in Dog Training

    • Then try it all the world is in your hands so run with it and good luck.

    • Have you thought of a college that specializes in Veterinary medicine? What you may need is an intern program with some organization that deals with dogs. If you want to train police dogs, go to your local dept and ask where they got their dog. Then try and contact the place and see if they can direct you into the field somehow. If it is guide schools, contact a school and ask how to get into the field. Good Luck.

Dog Health Questions: 15 y/o dog training?

I'm fifteen years old and I want to start a dog training business.

My experience includes training two highly obedient, well-mannered dogs, both easy-to-train golden retreivers. I am mature and organized, enough so to train one or two dogs over the summer and keep a schedule and track payment.

I was thinking of using a program along the lines of (7) [1] hour lessons over the course of [7] weeks. I would consider charging $75-$100 per session. (about $10-$15/hour)

I would create a curriculum and incorporate a member(s) of the family into the lessons.

Dog Training: Tips and Tricks the Professionals Use

    Recommended Answer:
I work with a trainer who has been breeding, showing and training dogs for 25+ years. She has titled dogs in conformation, obedience (up to UDX), agiltiy and now Rally-O. She runs a 7 week class, one hour each week, with a proper cirriculum and charges each individual only $50 for the 7 week course.

Do you have experience in the obedience ring? Have you title a dog in obedience yet? These are criteria I would certainly consider when deciding what trainer to go with and if the price were acceptable. If you have not done this yet, maybe you should consider lowering your cost to start to a reasonable amount which reflects your credentials and experience. Goldens are lovely dogs, but they are also a breed very easy to train. Are you able to assist an owner with a high energy border collie and isn't able to figure out how to properly handle and train a dog with such a high drive?

Are you a member of any local training clubs? Do you have respected trainers who will back you up and agree that you are fully capable of handling a training class with potentially any breed of dog? This is something else that would greatly benefit you.

I'm not trying to shoot down the idea and I'm not saying that you aren't possibly capable, it's just that many feel that because they can train their own dog, that they can teach others, but the truth is that dogs vary from breed to breed and you need to be well educated on the possible breeds that could come to you.

Crate Training Your Dogs - Ultimate Dog Training Method

    • What kind of method do you use to train dogs?

75$-100$ is a good price, but it depends on what you are training the dog to do. trust me if you have trained that many dogs, then you can probably start a business. (some people think that 15 is to young.) well good luck!

    • Keep in mind that there is a world of difference between training a dog tricks and doing true obedience training. This is not to insult you, your skills or your accomplishments. It's just that many people who bring their dogs in for obedience training have already taught their dogs to sit, lie, give paw, stay, etc. But those dogs are also far more willing to break those commands. That is, the dog may sit, but then promptly get up. A truly obedient dog will sit and stay seated. If not, the owner knows how to correct the dog and keep him in the position until released.

You also have Golden Retrievers. As you admitted, these wonderful dogs are, in general, far easier to train. Try working with a tougher breed, like Dalmatians. If you have success with them, then I will not doubt your skills at all.

As you are 15, I would actually recommend you seeking work with a professional trainer. Having just two dogs trained, while a start, would not impress me at all (sorry) and I would not use your services. However, if you gain experience working with a professional trainer who has worked with many dogs, then you can build up your c.v. and advertise in a year or so as a "dog trainer".

You are headed in the right direction, but at present, you do not have enough experience. Don't rush it - the experience you gain working at shelters or with a dog trainer will prove invaluable.

      Good luck!

    • You realize you'll have to apply for a small business license and file taxes with the IRS or you can get in a lot of trouble, right?

I don't think a lot of people will want to hire a kid who happened to teach his dogs to sit and stay to train their pet. You should wait until you're older. And why on earth would they pay those prices to someone with no background, no training, no certification (yes, REAL dog trainers are certified and take classes for it) ?

      It's a nice idea, but I don't think it's a good one.

    Dog Health Questions: Dog training?

My friend says that in order for him to train his chiuaua DOG properly his friends should act properly when they go over to his house and not play with or look at the dog too much, so that the dog doesn't jump and act all crazy like it always does...so everyone is uncomfortable and hates going to visit him, this has been going on for TWO years now, my Q: Does training a dog involve training your friends and the people around you as well, such as telling people no to breath too hard or talk aloud and look at the dog, because the dog will react to their behaviour and act all crazy?

Review - Secrets to Dog Training is Unparalleled Canine Training Resource

    Recommended Answer:
There are certain times in training where you should ask your friends to cooperate. For example, when you're training your dog not to jump up, you might ask your friends not to pet them when the dog jumps on them, but instead to ignore them and then pet them when the dog is sitting nicely.

But it sounds like your friend has gone a little overboard. It's not really normal for someone to have their friends hold their breath so that the dog doesn't go insane. It sounds like he's not really taking a good approach to dog training.

Service Dog Training and Selection - Train Dedicated Companions for Disabled People

    • no it doesn't. your friend should train the dog to be able to act properly around humans. tell your friend to take his dog to some training classes because it sounds like he is letting the dog rule his life not the other way around

    • naturally i give my dogs silent treetment whenevr they pestr my friends.
i command them to go into a certain area untill they rememeber to calm down. and yes people ned to be trained to act like a big hancho around the dog.

ps. DONT LET THE DOG GO BALLISTIC ON THERE LAPS cause he just might be taking over on them. when ever he does that you take over AND TELL HIM NO! if he does it again be the boss and stare him down like your the boss.

    • does the dog still do this im guessing yes, then i'dsay its not working after 2 years the dog should listen to him he should be leader and correcting the dog but visitors need to reinforce like if it jumps on your lap u need to remove it. and if it starts to act up HE needs to correct the bad behavior....tell ur friend to pick a good training book or better yet hire a dog trainer....
