Dog Health Questions: Dog training help please! 10 pts?

I'm looking into obedience for my dog and saw bark busters.. it's everything I need but Im leery of it since its new and I dont want to be scammed... I think ive heard of it before but I wanted to make sure.. Has anyone here ever heard of Bark Busters? And if you have do they really work?

They were suppose to contact me back but I waited the whole day without a response so I let them go.   About the kennel club: yes usually your local kennel club would offer obedience lessons, BUT I'm currently in a kennel club's obedience training, and I must say I'm very disappointed in the trainer. It's old schooled and the trainer is definitely not well equipped in dog behavior and training. The trainer is more knowledgeable in conformation which is useless to me. However, I'm making the most of it, and my dog is benefiting form the sheer fact that he is being exposed to many dogs of all breeds while having to behave.
  
  I recommend you take it to a place that is specialized in dog training in your area, not petsmart. Go watch their sessions, they should be more than happy to have you sit in and watch. And if you think they're knowledgeable, enroll. Best wishes.

Dog Health Questions: Plz help my dog goes crazy when I ride my gas minibike!?

My portugese water dog now 1 years old has developed a now serious problem with me starting my engine for my gas scooter, as a puppy I accidently encouraged her barking and it may have frightened her. Anyway now she barks and tries to bite and or attack the scooter. It really upsets me because I have read stress can kill dogs by heart attafck. She has a full blown panic attack and desprately looks for something to chew to calm her nerves. I really need help. How do I make her comfterble with me starting engines and gas scooters or minibikes!? Please its serious and really scares me, she still goes crazy if I put her inside and now has developed agression where if I try to hold her from going out so I can go out and leave her inside she will bite me. It is really scaring me and I desprately need a solution, I am only 15 years old so dog training claSses are not a option. But I lover her and want things to be better so I am willing to put as much time into it as needed. Plz help!!!

Dog Health Questions: How to stop my gsd pup biting my older dog?

i have a gsd ***** pup that is 12 weeks old. she is nice around me and does not nip me. i have a 4 year old king charles spaniel also but cassie ( my gsd) keeps nipping and biting misty(king charles) especially around the neck. im worried that cassie might end up injuring her. is this a sign of aggression or just play? she has not started dog training yet but she wil be starting soon. hope you can help!

Then, let her play again and if she bites again do the same over and over until she gets it.
  
  If you have not actually seen her biting misty's neck then it simply might be that Misty has an allergic reaction (like hives) maybe do to stress from the new pup. If she has a patch of sores on her neck that look like bumps that come from under neath the skin and then she scratches and makes worse. You can give her benadryl or may need to take her to the vet to get an allergy shot.

Dog Health Questions: Dog Training Tips - How to teach her to get off the bed?

I mentioned this problem in another post (about the dog puking) but I think it needs some elaboration and its own question.

I have a female, 6 mo.-old Sheltie. I'm just looking for tips.

I want to help teach her how to get off my bed, without embolding her to try and go up and down stairs. The reason for this is that she is not yet fully trained to "stop and come" if she gets away from me, and she's bolted out of my second-floor apartment door twice. The stairs are a buffer zone that I know she won't cross and I can catch her. I've scolded her about the bolting, and she's stopped, but its still a safety zone.

She is both one of the most intelligent dogs I've had AND the most hard-headed/ornery. The breeder whose helping me with her warned me that she was strong-headed, so this has been a character trait since birth. She learned 'sit' and other "tricks" after less than 4 commands, so I know she's not just being stupid. I've trained many dogs before, but this one is just... wow. :P

Now, part of the issue here is that I don't know why she's scared to leave the bed. It is one of those Ikea beds, so it's just over a foot off the floor -- I might as well be sleeping on just a mattress. While it's still head-level with her, I've seen her jump off of other things. When I walk her in the park, she'll hop curbs and two-foot or higher terraces with me with absolutely no problem or pause. I have a three-foot tall bed in my living room for a couch (I'm cheap, okay?), and she gets off of that just fine. I know she's still a puppy, but I wonder why she thinks the bed is more dangerous than these other things.

I want her to sleep with me. I don't want her getting on my bed while I'm gone. I work a VERY long shift -- too long for her to not go potty, and I accept that, but she gets on my bed and gets trapped up there. I'm tired of washing sheets. :P I come in from work and she's sitting there with that look on her face that says she KNOWS she's messed up and she can't even hide because there's nowhere to go.

The only option I have is shutting the bedroom door, which means shutting my two cats in there since that's their only access to their box in my bathroom. It just seems mean to them because it really is a very small space.

She was originally crate-trained, but I used to live with some roommates who would ignore her or tantalize her in the crate (one of the reasons I moved out) and then blame me when she wouldn't stop barking at them. I would have to go and get her and stick her in my bed to make her be quiet, that or stick her in an unventilated room which was NOT an option. The crate's become a "time out" zone, so I don't want to leave her in there when I go to work and make her think she's being punished.

The thought occurs to me that you are confusing this poor puppy. She's either allowed on the bed or not. How can she possibly understand that she's only allowed on the bed when you want her to sleep with you? You can't let her on the bed one minute then be punishing her the next.

Dog Health Questions: Becoming more involved with dog training? Career?

Good evening everyone.

I am, yet again, faced with a career dilemma. I simply cannot decide what I want to do, though I know I will be more than thrilled if I get to work with dogs for the rest of my life.

I know there are several ways to go about doing this, and my main interests lie in grooming and training.

My question here, though, is about training. How does one go about getting experience with training? I know there are plenty of options: mentoring, dog training academies, participating in other training classes, etc.

I have looked into various dog training academies, and have only been truly impressed by one (more impressed by the instructor than the academy itself). I will definitely be attending courses at this particular school, but this is not where I want to end my education.

I am making the decision to take time off college to do all of this. I know this will probably end up being a really bad decision on my part, but I will never know if I do not try, and college right now simply isn't working out for me.

So with all this in mind, what else can I do to expand my dog-related education?

I am interested in training dogs for movies, becoming more involved as a handler, possibly working for the AKC in some why (though I am split on what I think about the organization), possibly training police dogs or guide dogs...basically, I'm open to suggestions and would love to try it all.

Must-Have Tools For Easy And Fun Dog Training

Most of the people that I know around here that are trainers have become this based on their personal experience. They didn't go to school to learn how, but rather had a few dogs that they trained up and put into the show ring, agility, obedience, etc. That showed that they were capable and then they took on students. They then got quite a bit of a clientele built up, tho it did take time.

What I can tell you is that the couple people I am thinking of around here still had "day jobs" and they taught and trialed at night and on the weekend. They also had a facility they could train at.

I know that when I am looking into a trainer, their experience is what is going to draw me in first and foremost. The more active you become in dog related activities, the more experience you will gain and more likely you will be able to establish a business of your own or maybe be taken on as a trainer by a local kennel club to begin with. I also know BC people who became so active that they now work for the AKC too, but they were judges and so forth first before getting that far.

I say get into a local training club and see what connections you can make there. You would be amazed the resources you will find in dog training club like that!
