Dog Health Questions: How can I teach my dog to come to me instead of run away?

Yorkie -- Female -- 17 weeks!

Dog training/obedience classes are not an option, unfortunately. They're not available anywhere around here, even IF I could afford them!

She just runs away under the furniture hiding from me. If I make my voice louder or more stern, then she just goes farther away like she's in trouble or something (although she kinda is, LOL).
It's a really annoying little thing she's got going there. It really gets on my nerves!

Oh, and I have tried luring her to me with a doggie treat as well and she just stares me down.

Free Dog Training Tip - Proven Tips To Train Your Dog

Recommended Answer:
You simply have to make coming to you more enticing than whatever else she's doing. Remember, she has no idea what "Come" means until you teach her.

Start with puppy on a leash. Sit down on the floor with a handful of her favorite treats. Let her wander to the end of the leash, then say, "Puppy, come!" Pitch your voice high, sound as happy as you can. If she does not come, gently pull her toward you. Each time she turns to face you, and each time she voluntarily takes a step toward you, chirp in a high-pitched voice, "Attagirl! Good girl! Puppy, come!"

When she gets to you, give her a treat for each time you praised her, and all the while pet her and tell her she's the best puppy ever. Brian Kilcommons calls it a "praise party" and you want to throw one just for her. :)

When she's done eating, give her your release command. I use "At ease." Herding dogs are told "That'll do." It should be something you never say, because you don't want to accidentally tell her she can wander off. :)

When she wanders off to the far end of the leash again, repeat the tug and praise. When she comes in, again, give her lots of treats.

Repeat a third time, then take the leash off and *don't call her again.*

While training the 'come' you NEVER give the command if you can't enforce it. She has to consider 'come' to be a command she must always obey, and she does so willingly because she gets terrific treats and praise when she does.

If you do a set of three three times a day, she'll figure it out pretty quickly; yorkies are smart. On the second day, only give her lots of treats on two out of three recalls; on the other give her only one. Never repeat a pattern; keep her guessing about which time you'll give her lots and which time you'll only give her one.

When she gets good at it, you can start replacing the food treats with just praise, and using a longer leash. Only jackpot her (the whole handful of treats) occasionally. Good luck!

Effective Dog Training Tips

  • I taught my dog to come to me by using a silly noise, not a loud voice or soft either. they respond more by weird noises so make one up and use a doggy treat to give your dog when she comes to you. then this will teach her that she is a good dog for coming to the weird sound lol its funny but it works. just be patient and good luck :)

BTW you need to earn her trust as it seems you have already made her scared of you by using your loud voice. which makes her think your telling her she is already bad.

  • Libraries are free and easy to find. They'll have books and videos on dog obedience. Ask at the front desk, they'll help you find a good one.

The more stearn and mean you sound the more the poor baby is going to run from you. Instead, you need to make your voice high pitched and happy.

Remember that this is the first time she's been away from her mommy and her siblings. This is the first time she's clapped eyes on you.

Remember, to her, you are a giant. She's probably smaller than your shoe, and when you get stern with her, she thinks a dog eating alien is going to eat her brain.

    Relax.
    Let her hide.
She'll come out when every thing settles down.
    Speak in happy tones.
Sit down. Better yet, lay down on your back. let her see you aren't as humongous and mean as you seem.

  • this is not normal behavior. has something traumatic happened in the past? also, never ever talk mean or stern to a dog when you are trying to get them to come to you. that only scares them away, especially such a small dog as a Yorkie. did u do something to scare her? by accident perhaps? try re-building the relationship. when you catch her, pick her up, and talk to her nice. tell her you love her, pat her head and try to get her to give u a kiss. if thats not possible, the just proceed to a quiet area where you can sit with her, and just pet her from head to tail, calmly talk to her, and just love her alot. do this many times a day, and that will build her trust in you. no dog should fear their owner, unless the owner gives them reason to. never talk to her loud or stern again unless she does something horrible, like potty indoors or something. that breed is timid and impressionable. just do what i described above, and try working a treat in there. like real meat, or chicken breast pieces. all dogs love real meat. if she refuses, be patient. the dog just need time to get used to you. a dog knows when you love them, and im not saying you dont love her. idk the answer to that, only you do. change the relationship, and the dog will change as well. good luck with her. :).

  • it sounds like theres tention between u to. you two need to practice this for a hour each day. treat her with respect and she will give it back to u. yelling and being sturn dosent help situations it just makes them worse. when u walk towards her make eye contact before ten seconds is up look away and keep moving towards her, then look at her again u dont want to scare her away by staring at her becuz that makes her feel like u r challenging her. she dont no what u are gunna do it is her instinct to react and run to plan a strategy.
    just try it

  • Drop to your knees and make suckling noises holding a super special treat like a hot dog or cheese bit. If the dog ignores you sneek up a put the treat in front of its nose. When it comes to you give all the praise in the world. ALWAYS have a treat when you use this method. Never use this method for bad stuff like medicine, baths, crate time or whatever.

The formal recall never call the dog "rover come!" without a leash or long line on. You need to mastered tethered before off leash. While practicing this only give treats sporaticly.

The worse thing you can do is recall for bad stuff or corrections. Don't use harsh or stern tone of voice, recalls should be bright, fun and playfull. Recalls should be the most fun thing in the world and 100%, one day their life can eventually depend on it!

Add: #1 Have your husband stop playing with her in that way #2 spend more time working that energy out of her, redirect that enthusiasm into walk time on coming out of the crate. Have the leash ready before you let her out.

Dog Health Questions: Dog training help please! 10 pts?

I'm looking into obedience for my dog and saw bark busters.. it's everything I need but Im leery of it since its new and I dont want to be scammed... I think ive heard of it before but I wanted to make sure.. Has anyone here ever heard of Bark Busters? And if you have do they really work?

Dog Training Tips - Dog Distraction Training

Recommended Answer:
never heard of it but you want to do positive training with your dog what style do they use all dogs are different but most dogs respond well with positive training good luck

Do a Good Job of Dog Training

  • Yahoo Answers without giving where you are located is hardly the way to gather information about this place. Ask around in your community at vets, humane societies and other dog owners around.

  • Bark Busters totally worked for my yappie yorkie. Now hes more laid back and only barks when strangers knock on the door or sometimes when we walk and he gets excited. But YES it works!!

  • I have only heard bad things about Bark Busters, nothing positive.

  • Why not just contact your local kennel club? Most kennel clubs hold obedience classes on a regular basis. Most all of the trainers for kennel clubs are well known obedience judges and trainers. This is a franchise, go with the private trainer from a kennel club.

  • I called them once for my dog and I got a receptionist that took my message for my area, but I never got a call back. They were suppose to contact me back but I waited the whole day without a response so I let them go. I've never heard of any one else's experience but I researched them before calling and they have a satisfaction guarantee.

About the kennel club: yes usually your local kennel club would offer obedience lessons, BUT I'm currently in a kennel club's obedience training, and I must say I'm very disappointed in the trainer. It's old schooled and the trainer is definitely not well equipped in dog behavior and training. The trainer is more knowledgeable in conformation which is useless to me. However, I'm making the most of it, and my dog is benefiting form the sheer fact that he is being exposed to many dogs of all breeds while having to behave.

I recommend you take it to a place that is specialized in dog training in your area, not petsmart. Go watch their sessions, they should be more than happy to have you sit in and watch. And if you think they're knowledgeable, enroll. Best wishes.

Dog Health Questions: What are some pressures of being a dogs training.?

or working at a pet shop.

Do You Make These 4 Common Mistakes in Dog Training?

Recommended Answer:
The main pressures of training work would have to be the people involved (the one that don't want to listen, think they don't have to, etc) and the dogs - it isn't easy, it isn't going to be quick. It takes time, patience, and dedication. Not to mention lots of mentoring under other trainers to learn the most you can about ALL forms of training techniques.

As for pet shop, i would NEVER work in one unless it did not sell dogs. Period. Working at one that sells dogs means you would have to LIE to people about where they came from and their health, and you would be supporting puppy mills by selling their stock. Wouldn't be able to live with myself if i did that. Pet stores that don't sell animals, well, a bit less stressful but you STILL have to deal with people and all other things that come with retail work.

Positive Dog Training Tips That Actually Work

  • Dog training requires that you are always fair, always encouraging, always consistent, no matter how frustrated you feel. And this means to the dogs and their owners!

Can't help you with the pet shop.

Dog Health Questions: Does the mother dog trains the baby puppy?

so let say if the mother dog is potty trained for example, would she teach her lil baby to be potty trained too??? lol kinda odd question but I was just wondering :)

How To Use Dog Training Collars

Recommended Answer:
LOL, that would be a wonderful trick and save a lot of hassel with all new puppy owners. Of course she doesn't teach the pups to be house trained.

Learn the Secrets to Service Dogs Training & Get Immediate Results

  • No she wouldn't teach that, but yes a dam does teach her pups things they need to know before leaving her.

  • Nope. One kind of training a mother dog will do is to stop her pups from fighting with each other. She will discipline one by putting that pup away from the group for a short amount of time.

  • No way! I don't think so. You should do some proper research, really.

  • Well, no, not really, but she does lay down the groundwork for you (the new owner of the pup) to follow.
The dam reinforces the instinct for the pup not to soil its nest. You just have to teach the pup how far away from the nest it needs to go to do its business (and maybe give it a lift to get there).

  • Dams teach their puppies dog manners, not human manners.

They train the pups in how to behave amongst dogs by teaching them what's considered rude. Stepping on, nipping, mouthing and being rough with another dog is often poor manners unless it is clear that both dogs want to play. These are lessons that puppies pick up from their mothers.

However, dogs are dogs, so they don't teach puppies human lessons. It's our "weird" human lesson to teach a dog how to potty outside versus inside, so it's us to up to teach that lesson.

Dogs can learn by example, though. It is possible for puppies to follow a dam's behavior in "going" outside, for instance.

  • you can try this after its had its shots take it out when you take the mother out to potty might help it learn by going outside with mom alot.

  • They eat spaghetti too.

Dog Health Questions: Dog training, dog knows better, quits cooperating?

I adopted a 1 1/2 yo dog and have had for about ten days. Dog is quickly opening to me. It has a seperation anxiety I am working on and the stay command may need to be longer. Today, I brought a ball inside the house (sorry mom), and it was the first time she showed interest and indeed fetched the ball three times in a row. She never looked at the ball in any previous daily attempts this week.

I praised her after each retrieval and hand over, but i tried to reinforce the stay command using the ball and may have confused her, as she never fetched again. Wouldn't even open her mouth to the ball. This is the most recent example where she has shown an ability, but lacks consistent desire for follow through. Please help.

Also, any pointer on when to give up on a command, and how to move forward without rewarding a failed listen? Do i go with the failsafe sit, so she stays positive, or what else? Help she is a very good dog and I don't want to lose her by doing things wrong.

Training Your Dog at Home - Save Thousands of Dollars on Dog Training

Recommended Answer:
Not all dogs play the same way. My dog is not into fetch at all. I've tried to teach him many times, but he just isn't into it. He likes to play by just running around in crazy circles, and he plays with his toys by destroying them. That's his personality. Have you taken her to the dog park? See if she likes that. Or try other toys--tug toys or frisbees. Try stuff out and see what she likes.

Also, what kind of ball was it? My dog likes baseballs the best. Try Kong toys with cheese or peanut butter in them...try to make the toys something she really wants. Wait until you can tell she's in a playful mood, and try to play with her then. If you're trying to play with her when she's tired, she's not going to be into it.

The Main Benefits Of Dog Training

  • Consistency is the key to your dog being obedient. You and everyone in your family have to be consistent. Follow through is very important. Never give your dog a command that you can't, or aren't willing to enforce.

Be careful not to overload the dog with information. Training takes time and patience.

  • Too much, take time with training. The dog is only with you 10 days, it needs time to adjust and to adapt to new people and a new environment. You may be pushing too hard. Have some fun with the dog, bond, play, go for walks, play more.

Dog Health Questions: Repost: Service dog training assistant?

I posted this last night but only got one answer SO I heard back from CCI about my request for an application for a service dog. It only took them two weeks which is nice. I have to have a training assistant with me when I go up there, so I was wondering, how necessary is that? And does the assistant have to be able bodied because my mom will not want to do it (assuming I'm still living at home which me thinks probably not) and I have a friend in that area who I can ask if they would want to do it who has the same disability as I do.

Dog Training Tips - Dog Distraction Training

Recommended Answer:
You're asking the wrong people. If you want to know what they require or permit, you need to ask them, not us. You're going to have a relationship with this organization for the next 6-8 years at least (the working life of your service dog). You're going to have to communicate with them, and likely you'll have to do it a lot during the first year. They'll have a lot more respect for a client who asks questions of them than one who asks strangers for their opinions.

Whether they'll permit it depends on whether or not your friend can perform the necessary functions of the job. So you call and explain he is disabled and how and ask if he can be the assistant. Simple.

A Long Tradition of Dog Training

  • Hey I see that you need some sort of guide that will give you tips and tricks to help your dog become fully trained and more healthy. Recently one of my friends really needed some advice on how to train his dog, he followed the dog training academy course to successfully train his dog in a few weeks.

  • Ask them what the assistant has to be able to do. If you live with your mom and she does not want the service dog, they may not allow you to get one until you have your own place. If you don't bring the assistant they may also wait to help you get a dog until you have someone to work with.

  • Hey, from the sounds of it, you could use some pup training advice. Well, I took a course a while back because I had a terrier who drove me crazy! (I actually called him a terrorist instead of terrier) from the dog training academy. It really helped out a lot. I guess you have to kind of think like a dog. Anyway, it might be something you want to check out. Good luck.

  • hi [askername]
i understand the problem you ar going though when trying to lose weight
my friendis in the same situation as you nothing worked for him until he came across the diet solution program he s been haveing great success with it maybe this is samething which could be right for you

    well good luck to you

  • If they say you need an assistant, then you need one. Why are you questioning this? Why don't you just pick up the phone and give them a call?

  • If they ask for it then it is necessary. Training a Service Dog is no easy task.

  • As you say "I have to have a training assistant with me when I go up there, " so it is necessary

  • it is nesacari

Dog Health Questions: Dog training vs leting dog have freedom?

i couldn't really word the title well. Okay, so i trained my dog for about 2 hours a day. Which included walks, just looking at me, coming back to me, and then in house training learning tricks. When i did a lot, meeko seemed to love it at first then when I starrted teaching him new tricks, like cover eyes, or anything that doesnt involve lots of moving, he got bored. If it involved lots of movement, he liked it a little more.

Now, i didnt do as much training this week cuz he got neutered so since we didnt do lots of training, he seems happier and listens to me a lot more and wants to be with me. when we walk, and i dont nag him, he barely pulls... why is this?

I train (about 5-10 mins each session unless its walks) and he ignores me more vs not training as much (i still did his basic tricks which he loves) and he now wants to be with me and comes to me on his own now). Did i over work him even though it was short sessions.

oh also he pays A LOT more attention to me now

Dog Training Tips - Dog Distraction Training

Recommended Answer:
If you are too repetitive they will get bored. Now that he's obeying reliably, you don't have to drill him on his behaviors. A little bit every day and when it's practical is enough. Maybe try to think of some creative ways to work his training in to his schedule or even some new things to work on.

Is Dog Training Necessary? Part 1

  • Do you give Meeko treats, a toy or affection for a reward?

  • You didn't say how old he is puppy'ss can go through "teen" phases when they don'tlisten very well, just keep up with the positive training.

    Good luck

  • It sounds like he's young and needs to burn off some energy before he can concentrate on trick-learning. Try walking him first, then spending short amounts of time training tricks (several 10 minute sessions rather than an hour-long session).

Good for you for being so diligent about training. Sounds like he'll be a great dog.

Dog Health Questions: Dog training in colorado?

How would I do opening an at home buisness on my ranch with dog grooming, boarding, and training? I would train basic obedience, agility, tracking, schutzhund, bomd detection, search and rescue ex. How would I do as far as buisness and pay? I know the economy is bad right now but this won't be for atleast another 5 years.

Clicker Dog Training

Recommended Answer:
First thing I would do is scope out the competition in your area. What services do they offer customers? What are their employee's qualifications/certifications? What type of facilities do they have? How do they advertise? And, of course, what are their prices? It'll give you a good idea of how to price your own services and how your set up would compare to the competition.

Second, you'll have to get liability insurance if you're opening up a business. If something happened to a dog or someone dropping/picking up a pet and they decided to sue, you need this insurance to protect yourself. Start looking for some quotes now and a year before you plan to open to get a good idea of the cost.

Next, take a look at your expenses while operating this business. Will you have to pay for extra help, and how much will their salaries be? How much will products be such as kennels, food, dishes, toys, etc. Then, how much will it cost to advertise for your business? Take all this into account before you set your prices for all your services.

Good luck!

Dog Health Questions: Can I get some help/advice with dog training?

I taught my puppy to sit.
I taught my puppy to sit and shake

I just taught her how to "speak" on command but now since we have been working on that so much.... she immidiatly thinks I want her to "speak" when I am asking her to sit! Poor thing is confused. Any advice?

How do I teach her to lay down? She does start training 1 week from today. I hired a dog trainer to come into our home. I just want her to know some things now.

A Guide to Basic Dog Training Principles

    Recommended Answer:
maybe the words speak and sit sound to much alike for your puppy to tell the difference, also in my experience when you work on one command so much the dog either forgets the other command or gets so use to the one command it automatically will do the same command hoping it will get it right, kinda like what kids do when they learn colors or numbers or there letters, what is this color and they say blue. If blue is the only color that they have learned they are going to say blue to every color that they see even if its not blue, and they can tell the difference but they don't know any other color to shout out, same with if they learn the color red then you spend weeks teaching them the color green and then you go back and ask them what the color red is they are going to say green because that is the freshest color in their mind, I'm not saying only teach the doggie one command but as you teach them one command don't forget to refresh them on their previously learned commands.

Is Dog Training Necessary? Part 1

    • Are your words or hand signals too similar for those two actions?

When my dog was in a sitting position, i would put a treat in front of him and slowly move my hand to the floor. He would follow the treat, and often lay down when I did that. Now, his hand signal for lay down is a downward motion with my hand.

    • I would get a treat in one hand and say down as you bring the treat down to the ground slowly. they will follow the hand movement and make her lay down for a couple seconds. or you can take take your index and middle finger and put them together and signal the two fingers up and then down.remember to give a happy praise with a high pitched voice if she lays down for at least 5 seconds. ( sorry if i cant explain that very well)

    • well since she's learning speak, make sure you teach her "quiet" too!
to teach laying down you can put the treat in front of the dogs nose and then bring the treat down under something, use your leg or a table, so that the dog is forced to lay down to follow the treat with it's nose. also, try teaching with hand signals rather than just words, something to show the difference between sit and speak. lol. just google training videos :)

Dog Health Questions: I need help with where to find advanced dog training techniques.?

I have a really smart border collie mix. I have taught her all the basic commands like sit, stay, down, dance, roll over. I want to teach her more, but don't know how. Where can I get some good techniques to teach a smart dog amazing stuff?

The Basic Commands of Dog Training

    Recommended Answer:
One bit of advanced training I recommend is doing all the things you've taught him, and take it to the Seuss level- can he do it on a box, can he do it with a fox (another dog nearby running around), can he do it here and there, can he do it anywhere? IOW, think of as many permutations as you can, and make sure the dog can do it anywhere under any conditions- could you go on Letterman with a crowd in front, bright lights, cameras that roll in, etc?

Have you considered training for a dog sport like agility or freestyle? Youtube has some videos that show lots of different behaviors/skills for these sports.

I also love doing some of the mental work that BCs love so much- playing hot and cold targeting games. If you have a chance to get to a Kathy Sdao seminar- go! I have some vids on youtube of my dog doing some hot and cold targeting

There are also some vids of her skateboarding and doing a handstand, as well as agility.
