Dog Health Questions: Should i be worried about my dog trainer?

I went along to a dog training class and ive been there about 3 months now doing well :) then...a new trainer starts and I feel being to hard on my dog (harsh corrections, aggressive shouting and getting in his face) to the point he was cowering! Outside she told me to put him on a choke chain i refused as he heels fine without one. She asked me what he was crossed with, i replyed hes not crossed hes border collie she said he cant be as his tail is curled up and he has spots and then laughed at me saying that he wasnt a collie at all! I found lots of websites where collies have tails up and over their backs with spots! (known as ticked i now know)...Im worried she clearly knows nothing about the breed? I have already decided im NEVER going back but should i write and complain about the treatment of my puppy and the fact she knows nothing and ridiculed me!

Be a Responsible Dog Owner and Consider Using a Dog Training Collar!

Recommended Answer:
Heck yeah! Her boss needs to know...and SHE needs to know that we have moved on to a better way of training these days and that her harsh methods won't be tolerated. Even more so, to ridicule a customer is not acceptable either.

And imagine all the other owners out there who will just go with the flow assuming this is the best way to train! Poor dogs. You can get much better results and a lovely relationship with your dog if you treat them with respect and as a pack leader would - which is NOT yelling or putting a choke chain on!!

Passive and Active Dog Training Techniques

  • yes i agree with you there, she sounds like she doesn't know what she's doing at all. You should get the dog to respect you, not cower in fear before you. I feel that you did the right thing by leaving those classes imediately and i recommend that you tell the other people who go there to leave as well, you don't want their dogs to develop behavior problems from improper training!

  • So, who are you going to complain to? Just let it go.

  • Most dogs are driven to *please* their owners. This is why positive reinforcement works better than shouting. I've had lots of "bad" dogs :) and have found, across the board, that a firm "NO" coupled with the startling sound of a single hand clap is as extreme as you need to go as long as you lavish lots of praise for good behavior.

Personally, I've seen too many injuries caused by choke collars. A harness or Halti works just fine. I tried choke and prong collars with one of my dogs a few years ago - turns out he has such a high pain tolerance that the pinch didn't register. The annoyance of the Halti, did, however.

There are lots and lots of unqualified dog trainers out there. There are also trainers who will use methods you disagree with. Stick to someone who tries to train with your own beliefs in mind.

  • The problem is not just the trainer but the system the class is using. It is a punishment based method. I recommend quitting that school all together and finding a reward based, positive reinforcement method class. The type of training your dog is getting now is only teaching it to be fearful and insecure. R+ training will build your dog's confidence and your bond with him.

Plus is sounds like that trainer is a breed snob.

I'd report them to the Better Business Bureau. Also check to see if they are member of the Chamber of Commerce in your area, if so I'd report them there, too. You could also post online reviews of them places like www.dogster.com (dogster local) or various city listings.

  • The trainer you're describing sounds like a real loser.

Yes, please send a respectful, unemotional letter of complaint to the parent body/club.

There is zero need for punishing dogs, "harsh" "corrections", choke chains, or making a dog fearful in any way. That's totally the domain of losers who don't know what they're doing.

The more anyone knows about dogs the more he/she realizes he/she doesn't know. No one...and I mean no one...can definitively determine a dog's breed by appearance. We can guess. But that's all we're doing. Some of us make more educated guesses than others. All dog breeds are genetically identical (for all intents and purposes). In some places it is illegal to say any dog is a "purebred" (this or that) unless it is registered with the national kennel club. And in all my years having fun at guessing the breeds of dogs, I've come across many that are purebreds who don't look like their breed standard, and mixes that look like purebreds.

Where I live, Border Collies were de-listed a few years ago precisely because there is too much variation to form an agreed-upon standard amongst local fanciers. I meet BC's that are anywhere from 15lbs to 70lbs, and every colour under the rainbow.

  • DEFINITELY complain directly to the club. She doesn't sound like a very good trainer. Your poor dog too. :' ( And yup, border collies commonly have curled tails and/or spotted backs.

Dog Health Questions: What is your favorite dog TV show on TV now?

Whenever I'm at my sister's house I watch tons of Animal Planet. Surprisingly, there are a lot of really good TV dog shows on. Do you have a favorite and why?

Bonus: Least favorite dog show EVER?
I have a lot of beef with a dog training show in canada called "At the End on My Leash." REally REALLY dislike it for too many reasons to list. :P

Find Out About Purchasing Yourself Some Dog Training Books, They Could Really Be Quite Helpful

Recommended Answer:
Well me and Saber like Its Me Or The Dog and Dog Whisperer, dog 101 [Only a little, like i swear I turned on my TV this morning just to have some form of noise an dog 101 were presenting designer breeds...I wanted to slap myself]

I like Underdog to Wonder dog, It's cute and it make you feel good that not all humans are horrible stupid ignorant about dogs, I mean for got sake some people kick their dogs when they do something bad, abusive.

......I only saw a couple of Last Chance Highway but it seems good.Hate, I don't think I hate any dog show or at least seen one that I hate, I don't watch TV so often.

The Many Types Of Dog Training

  • Favorite- Pit Boss, Underdog to Wonderdog & Animal Hoarding. Pit Boss because it helps spread the truth, it helps find excellent homes for needed Pit Bulls and also is entertaining. Animal Hoarding is kind of creepy, but also entertaining, and it also spreads word that people ARE like that & they NEED help! Underdog to Wonderdog because I just love it. It's cute, it's helpful, it's truthful, it's entertaining, etc.

Least Favorite- Dogs 101 because all of it's information is false and with that being said, false information + pre/owners with the wrong education on the said breed are in for a huge surprise. Not to mention it did an episode on designer dogs, that made me want to throw my baseball bat at the screen.

I'm pretty 'meh' on It's Me Or The Dog & Dog Whisperer. The reason being because I don't like or watch those shows, but those methods are used by people. I have no problem with that.

  • It's Me or the Dog! I'm so excited about the new season! =)

I'm about to finish Victoria's book "It's Me or the Dog - How to Have the Perfect Pet." It's a great book! Every dog owner or future dog owner should read it! =D

    EDIT:
Yippee for thumbs down! You're just spurring me further towards IMOTD! Her methods work WITHOUT harsh punishment and WITH praise and rewarding good doggy behavior.

  • I'm kinda becoming fond of "Pit Boss". I work most of the time it's on, though.

Least favorite? "It's Me or the Dog." To me, it almost seems like the dogs will only behave when you have food in front of them. A dog should listen because it knows it should, not because it wants a fatty treat.

  • There's a TV show here in Australia called "Send in the Dogs". It's about detection and Police dogs. It's good for its entertainment value.

BQ: Least favourite? I wouldn't have a clue. We don't get many dog shows here.

  • pit boss or last chance highway:)

least: dogs 101, its misinformative and horrible...

  • Is It Me Or The Dog

  • One of my favorites is "Pit Boss". I love that Shorty's Rescue is trying to change how people see Pit Bulls because they are not the vicious dogs people think they are. I also love "It's Me or the Dog". I like that Victoria Stilwell uses positive reinforcement training and is very calm yet firm when training the dogs (and their owners). She is also against any training techniques that cause the dog any pain. And she doesn't use food all the time, just until the dog associates the behavior with something good and then treats no longer need to be used every time. She also suits the reward to the dog, so if they like toys more, she'll use toys or whatever the dog likes best. I have used some of her techniques with my own dog and was very pleased with the results. Both of these shows are on Animal Planet. As for a least favorite, I honestly cannot think of one.

Edit: I take that back. My least favorite is "The Dog Whisperer" as well. His tactics are borderline abusive (and most are abusive and inhumane in my opinion).

  • I LOVED Blues Clues when I was little! The old Blues Clues episodes with Steve, not Joe. In my opinion, the show was ruined when Steve left and Joe took his place!

Other than that no, I don't have a favorite dog show. I don't watch Animal Planet. I used to really enjoy Animal Planet, but now all they broadcast is disgusting shows about morons getting attacked by wild animals! I think that channel should be ASHAMED of themselves! They're supposed to be educating the public about animals! Not broadcasting how IDIOTS get themselves mauled by sharks etc.

I like it's Me or the Dog, but I don't watch it very often. I have nothing against Victoria Stilwell. At least she's not running around abusing dogs like Cesar Millan is so fond of doing!

My least favorite dog show EVER is the dog whisperer! I DESPISE Cesar Millan! He is the WORST thing that has happened in the dog training world!

  • Dog Whisperer, It's Me or The Dog, Blue's Clues

    Least Favorite:
Any propaganda show about puppy mills

  • Eddie on Fraser

Dog Health Questions: Questions about service animal training?

I'm currently doing a career project, and I've decided to choose Service animal training. However, I'm having trouble finding information on service animals aside from dogs.

What animals are used for service? What service is each animal best suited for (seeing, retrieving, etc)?

What's the avg salary range for a service animal trainer?

What education is required?

What skills does one need to be a successful trainer?

Disadvantages/advantages of the career field?Like I've said previously, I could only find the above info on service DOG training, but info on other animals is limited. I've sent emails to a few trainers I've found online, but I've yet to receive anything back.

Thanks!
-Missy

How to Use Dog Training Books to Reinforce You Dog's Good Behavior

Recommended Answer:
The reason information is hard to find about animals other than dogs is because the law was changed effective March 15th which made only dogs legally able to be considered service animals for public venue access purposes.

Just concentrate on the dog aspect, as that is the only legally recognized species.

Dog Health Questions: What is the best fighting dog?

Disclaimer: This question does not support or condone dog fighting in any way, shape, or form. The question presented below is merely one of human curiousity. Much as how two people discuss which sports team would win a game or which boxer would win in a bout. Please refrain from all comments or opinions that discuss how dog fighting is wrong both legally and morally. If you cannot answer the question, please do not post at all.

Ok, now that I've got that over with...

Which dog is the best fighting dog in the world, both pound for pound and overall?

American Pitbull Terrier, Rottweiler, Doberman, German Shepherd, Bull Terrier, Tosa, Fila, Dogo, Cane Corso, Presa Canario, Akbash, Owtcharka, Great Pyrenees, other?

And here's a great link for anyone with a curiousity about dogs:

Get Dog Training Shock Collar As One of the Most Effective Ways to Train a Dog

    Recommended Answer:
What are they fighting? Other dogs? Intruders? Predators?

The only reason I ask is because I'm wondering why you included three Livestock Guard Dog breeds in there.

    Of the ones you listed:

People: Fila Brasileiro and Cane Corso most likely. Their massive body structure gives them a distinct advantage against humans. The Fila would win overall because of its heritage and historical purpose.

Dogs: Pit Bull terrier would probably be the winner here. Bred for dog fighting, with the powerful jaws and musculature needed to hold their own against other dogs (who are more agile than humans). I think their agility would give them an advantage over the Tosa, but I don't know enough about Tosas to be sure.

Predators: Because of the instincts that have been bred into them, the LGDs are more likely to go after predators than the other breeds, which would give them the advantage. Of the breeds mentioned, the Owtcharka probably has the most aggressive temperament with a little more size behind it than the Akbash. The Pyr is more of an "outweigh and outlast" sort of defender.

Dog Training Methods - Different Ways to Teach Your Pet Dogs Some Useful Skills

    • hmmmmmmmmmmm uhhhhhhhhh duhhhhhhh errrrrrrr now let me think UMMMM ...................................

    • I would say any terrier type they are quick and agile enough to harm before any other breed has had time to think..

    • *sighs* It's a pitbull it was bred to be a fighting dog, that's why they have such a bad rep. Great Pyrenees isn't even CLOSE to being a good fighting dog, I own one her name is Belle she is so sweet, but I guess that could just be my dog. Well this question does upset me (but that is just my instinct) but I guess curiosity is curiosity...

    • I HOPE THIS IS A JOKE!!!GO FIND A DIFFERENT HOBBY, CAUSE NATURALLY THROUGHOUT THE DAY SOMEONE WHO THINKS DOG FIGHTING IS WRONG DOESN'T JUST THINK,"UMMMM.....WONDER WHAT BREED OF DOG IS BEST FOR FIGHTING!!!!"

    • an american pitbull terrier. i have a 7 month old puppy.

    • I would say it depends on the extent to which they are trained. I've seen some pretty tough dogs of all kinds. Personally, I think Pits are among the top 3. Just my opinion. C-ya!

    • Giant Schnauzer.

      Arf.

    • Pitbulls have great muscle tone, speed, and lock their jaws. Hence why they have a bad rep in general. But wolves can take a pitbull down in a second. A friend of mine owns 3 wolves as house dogs and one nearly killed a pit in their yard.

    • Oh I agree w/ Amy.Pit bulls for sure!

    • now it depends on what kind of dog your looking at a newer breed or an older breed. pit bulls are newer and the American bull dog is very old and has fighting in the blood. most the dogs you have listed are not good fighting dogs the ones you have listed that may be good fighting dogs are tosa fila and the pit bull. I'm not sure about the fila and the owtcharka but they are not know fighting.

    • pit bulls

    • anydog that can be taught to be aggressive could be a fighting dog

    • Pit bull is noted for it's fighting ability.

    • The game American Pit Bull Terrier . No other breed comes close.

    • Hmm I own a rotty pit and she would make for an awesome fighting dog,, but I would never fight her she would get her butt kicked.

    • a pitbull is one of THE best fighting dogs. it was bred to kill bulls in spain. so, that would be your best bet for best fighting dog, because it wants to fight to the death of its opponent.

(oh, and the cardinals (baseball team) is awesome. been a fan all my life, and am SO happy they won! anyways, i hope that answers your question.)

oh, and i hate dog fighting, but i just know a lot about anything that involves dogs.

    • A Pitbull crossed with an AKITA... the locking jaws of the pitbull and hooked teeth from the akita... I heard someone was arrested for breeding that mix....

Dog Health Questions: What are your experiences with the Koehler Method?

Hi everyone! I am doing research on different methods of dog training, and I'm interested in hearing your experiences with the Koehler Method. Did you like or dislike it? How well did it work for you? What is your overall opinion of it? Only answers from people who have tried it please. Also, please be kind and respect the opinions of others. Thanks!

Find Out About Purchasing Yourself Some Dog Training Books, They Could Really Be Quite Helpful

    Recommended Answer:
I learned the Koehler method many years ago. In fact many of our methods are offshoots of the Koehler method with the exception of purely positive or clicker training. While I don't use all of the method like I once did, I still use parts of it. Used properly it is a very fair and understandable method to the dog. Make sure that if you take a class advertising the Koehler method, that the person teaching the method has a perfect understanding in its use. Many competitive obedience trainers use parts of the Koehler method as it holds up well in competition. Food and toys are added to the method to improve motivation.

    Free Dog Training Tips

    • Anyone that started training 20 plus years a go learned how to train using the Koehler method.
It works, no question about it...it worked for THOUSANDS of dogs and that alone makes you wonder....
In my opinion dogs should be bred better then they are instead of worrying about coming up with softer methods and such for dogs.
The dogs that were around 30-50 years a go were much better dogs than what we have today.
Have you ever thought what will happen 20 years from now if we keep breeding dogs that cannot take a method like Koehler's? Hope I helped.

ADD: Curtis..please tell me what kind of dogs will we have 20 years from now if we keep on making dogs that are sht?
I know those times will never come back Curtis, I am painfully aware of it...
As far as Evolution...well, yes, it can be a great thing, if something is broken and needs fixing, but, we are breeding sht dogs and have to invent new methods of training them INSTEAD of raising the bar and going back to the days when dogs were REAL.
Oh, I am also willing to bet you that "pet" dogs were also a lot better dogs back then too...

    • As DaBassett said....started with it almost 30 years ago. It is without a doubt a successful method. As with all methods though...not all will work with every dog. Or, perhaps it works, but at the cost of something else. The mark of a good trainer is to be able to read the dog, and switch methods/techniques, hardness or softness, timing, etc to ensure forward progression. The "main" trainer that taught me the most, was a Koehler Clone. Although I respected his approach and success, I quickly developed methods of my own that left him baffled. Compulsion is not negotiable though...all positive doesn't work unless you live in an "Absolute" controlled environment. People will refer to Koehler as outdated or even brutal....but there's no denying it's success rate.

Just a side note....if you ask someone what "Method" they use...and they actually have a "black & white" answer....they aren't a trainer...they are someone that has learned a method.

    • Like others said, it's outdated.

Sure it works and produces fast results. That doesn't make it right. There's some bits that are still useful today, I think with a lot of methods you have to kinda pick through and grab what you like.

    • Koehler method is what I used when I first started training dogs almost 30 years ago. Although it worked for me, I've since moved on to methods that I think are better, and more pleasant for me and the dog.

    • Well said Basset! My answer exactly!

    • Koehler Method = Outdated. William Koehler had some very forward thinking in his day, which is why SOME of his methods are still applicable to dog training. It's SAD that the people who read his books aren't as forward in their thought process as William.

You'll find most Koehler practitioners ignore BETTER results achieved with more modern methods. It's almost like a religion, of COURSE their way has to be right, and everybody else is going to Hades! Or a martial artist who's style of course is the best in the world, even if they get knocked out...it's clearly the grounds fault that their face hit it!

The pet dog World...would be better off if pet stores stopped putting his books on the shelves. Koehler Method is overly aversive...but it works. It works quickly. It is probably the fastest way to have a 100% obedient dog. If you are the type of person who thinks the ends justify the means then be my guest. If you actually care enough to invest the time in doing things in a way that...well...let's call it the "right" way :) where you actually...you know...teach a dog what a command means BEFORE you hurt him or cause discomfort...uhhh then kudos to you! If you have to PHYSICALLY push a dog into a sit, or a down...then you're a bully and pretty pathetic considering a 2 year old can do it with a piece of kibble if simply shown where to hold her hand (straight up will cause the dog to sit, down low will cause the dog to lay down)...then all she has to do is say "Yes" and release the reward...hmmm...a week tops and the dog gets it...but of course he'll get it in 2 days if you say "Sit" pull up on his choke collar with one hand and shove his butt down with the other. Both work as to teaching the dog what the command means...but one actually requires that the dog becomes active in his own training instead of being the dummy who's put through the paces.

That small example of teaching a dog to sit/lie down is a trend you'll see in Koehler...using more force than is required. Heck if you decide you're incapable of holding a treat over a dog's head to teach him to sit, then you could you know...simply push his butt down a bit and hold the treat right in front of his nose...he'll sit, and you won't have to choke him at all, tada. BUT then again, Koehler and most of his followers (I call them "By the Book Koehler Trainers") believe if you teach a dog behaviors with treats or toy rewards, he'll ONLY listen when you have treats or toys...their thinking is backward and silly. They somehow think by choking a dog and pushing his butt down that he'll sit because he loves and respects you, LOL! But if you train with treats then by God he'll never obey unless you break out the liver biscotti! The purpose of positive reinforcement training ie giving a dog rewards to enforce that he repeat a behavior, is simply to teach the dog what we want. Once he has learned the behavior we want from him, we then teach the dog that obeying is not optional via methods very familiar to Koehler trainers: Corrections. This is the epitome of fair. I teach the dog something in a fun way, and when he knows it 100% and refuses to do it I warn him by saying "No", if he fails to comply after the warning, he is corrected. He knows that as a direct result of HIS actions he brought discomfort onto himself!

Koehler trainers apply pressure BEFORE issuing a command. So who does the dog blame for his discomfort? YOU of course. You choke the dog and push his butt down while saying "SIT"...he's looking at you like "Why are you choking and shoving on me?" and when he finally understands "Sit" = Put your butt on the ground it's too late...he's already thinking of you as the bully who pushes him around and chokes him for no reason. Another common way to train a dog Koehler style with an electric collar is to use the continuous stimulation button, command the dog to perform an exercise (let's say sit), and then release the stimulation when he completes the exercise. So the dog learns to turn off discomfort, he must comply...does this method work? Yes, every time like a charm! Is it fair? Of course not. Do you think your dog would enjoy training if training consisted of being caused discomfort for no reason, then being told to do something? That's like grounding a kid in the summer before school starts and telling them they'll be off punishment after they get good grades on their report card...I'm SURE it'd work, but I'm also quite sure that 20 years down the line when your kid's wife asks "How come you never talk about your parents?" he'll get a weird look on his face and go into "I...just don't wanna talk about it" mode...If you want modern trainers who take the time to do things correctly in training there are numerous people who give seminars, not many have written a decent book yet though, but one of my favorites, Michael Ellis is making DVD's on his methods (He is the owner/trainer of Pi, last years Mondioring 2 champion).

    • Not sure what kind of training are you seeking.

But, when i first got a dog, I used this book -->> Teach Yourself VISUALLYTM Dog Training by Sarah Hodgson as my guide. Full of pictures and great explanation, I think it would help for beginners!

I followed what the book says and it's quite effective. But results on how fast your dog learns the trick would vary. The key word to training your dog is always "practice, practice and more practice"

    • Training is the best investment you can make in your relationship with your dog. You'll need to do your homework first, though, to learn how to communicate what you want in a way that your dog will understand. Dog Health Questions: Dog training...female chihuahua?

Is it possible to train a 2 yr old female chihuahua to be nice. IE: not bite people who try to pet her, not bark at everyone, not run from you when you try to catch her...or is it too late?

They have that 'small dog complex' which is hard to control. Just keep up consistent training.

Oh, and remember that negative reinforcement will continue unwarranted behavior.

    • Yeah ya see, remember that dogs live in the moment, so it's never to late to do anything with them, you first have to become a pack leader, once she trusts and respects you as her leader, then you can begin trying to train her..... i suspect right now she is the pack leader in your house......

    • Nah, it's never too late to teach an old dog new tricks ;)

And she's only 2 years old, so she's not that old yet. I would reccomend taking control of her (not using negative reinforcement) but by becomming in her eyes the 'pack leader'. You need to in a way stand up to her and show her who's boss.

After she begins to respect you, and you're still having trouble training her, try enrolling her in obediance classes. She'll most likely improve soon.

      Good luck =)

    • lol best of luck to you im trying to do the same thing to my 2 year old female chihuahua. shes very vicious and its tough to discipline her you cant feel bad for what you have to do but ya i dunno watch the dog whisperer show with cesar milan its on national geographic channel or you can rent/buy the dvds. good luck

Dog Health Questions: Need dog training tips for the world's most stubborn dog?

I have a 7 1/2 month old puppy that is a Shar-Pei/Husky mix. He's adorable at 51 pounds, but refuses to listen. He understands sit and lay down, but only does those for treats. We were fortunate that potty training was instinctive, however he will NOT stop biting. He's not being aggressive, but wants to play. No matter how many times my husband and I tell him NO in a very stern voice, put him in time-out, hold his mouth closed, grab and hold him by scruff of the neck, NOTHING works. He could care less what we do. He continues to bite and jump up almost non-stop. He is extremely strong and hard to physically "manhandle". I'm at my wits end. Any suggestions?

How to Identify Good Dog Training Schools

    Recommended Answer:
With that husky mix in him, he has lots of energy. You probably have to exercise him more using a weight backpack or in a swimming pool.

As for the biting behavior, you need to teach him what's the behavior you want. You can tell him "no" and close him mouth shut, but he doesn't understand what he is doing wrong. He's simply just playing.

When you are playing with him and he's not being mouthy, give him tons of praise, when he starts being mouthy, simply turn your back away and ignore him, When he calms down, continue the playtime.

You and your husband need to be in charge, sounds like your dog is taking over. Keep all his toys in a box and food away. When the dog behaves and it's playtime, pull out some toys. When he gets aggressive, take them away.

Feeding your dog in a routine will also put you in charge.

The dog will soon realize that your the god of toys and food, and the only way he can get the toys, is if he behaves properly.

    In short:
    Exercise
Praise and correcting, not disciplining the behavior and expecting the dog to behave
Keep all toys and food, until you say its dinner time and playtime

    This should help! Good luck!

Information Is The Key - Same In Case Of Dog Trainings

    • I'm not surprised those methods don't work. If he's looking to play inappropriately, then correct him and ignore him EVERY time he does it. You can also try redirecting him to acceptable forms of play after the correction. Try obedience training also. A well trained, obedient dog can be put in a sit stay when displaying inappropriate behavior

    • Hi,

Mouthing is an unavoidable part of canine development. It's how young dogs learn about their world. Fortunately, by consistently signaling to your pup that biting is unacceptable, and giving her playtime with other dogs who'll teach her the same lesson, she'll learn to use her jaws very gently. Here are more training tips:

For jumping problem, check out these tips:

      http://lnk.nu/dogtime.com/wb1.html

    • Do not yell no at your dog do not grab your dog it scares them and they do not understand why you did it instead yelp in a high pitched voice "ouch" cross your arms as soon as it happens completely ignore the dog turn your back on him. Do this every time if he tries to get your attention ignore him stand up and keep your arms crossed and do not talk to him let him walk away. Make sure when you yelp that it is high pitched and sounds like a hurt puppy. It is possible that the pup was removed from the parents and siblings to early between 6 and 9 weeks the pups start to learn these lessons.

    • My reccomendations are:

Huskeys= ALOT of ENERGY lol so long walks are needed or a tred mill. You can also get a doggy back pack for your walks and fill them with water bottles so the weight can wear him out alittle.
Huskeys also can be a very mouthy breed so that's not unusual that he is using his mouth to play with you.
Shar Pei= Fighting breed-These dogs have very strong and thick necks for fighting. So a routine collar is not going to do you justice as you walk them. I would suggest a prong collar to be used for walks and be sure the collar is towards to top of the neck. So when your on a walk you give a tug right the the moment of him pulling. Be sure during the walk he is walking next to or behind you. The collar may look like some german torture device but in fact it does not hurt them as long as it is used properly it simulates the bite of an alpha dog.

      1. I would recommend a puppy/dog class for you guys. To teach to the basic on how to dicipline your dog.

      2. Have a daily routine: get up take the dog on a walk, feed him, ect.

3.Be consistant with commands. The prong collar can also be used at home with a very short leash so when this big guy is jumping all over the hubby you can correct him. It is better to correct him before he gets way to excited. Also have your husband ignore him until he calms down eye contact, talking to him anything that focuses on him will cause excitement and unwanted behavior.

      4. Before letting people in your house: Make him sit and stay and have your guests ignore him completely until he is calm. Once he is calm you may praise him in a calm voice.

      Good luck.

Dog Health Questions: Dog question help please :) about training?

is there any good websites for dog training?
and is there anyway i can make my dog stop barking ive tried choke collar and squeezing his noes i try not to be mean!

Dog Training Career - How to Become a Dog Trainer

    Recommended Answer:
How can he learn if you don't show him what he should do INSTEAD of barking? When he's quiet, *always* reward him with petting, praise, treats and/or play. When he's barking, either ignore him or interrupt him. (Try to get him to obey a "sit" cue, for instance, or some other cue. Then you'll have his attention and can reward the heck out of him for obeying and being quiet.)

Dog Health Questions: Stud dog training any advice from breeders please my dog is 3 months old labrador ?

i will use him for stud wen he is old enough what age is this i breed labradors but never own a stud dog

Dog Training Clicker - Why Use a Clicker?

    Recommended Answer:
You breed him when he is 2 years old, and has passed his genetic hip and eye certifications.

Being that you're a breeder, you certainly know what those are, right?

Dog Training Clicker - Why Use a Clicker?

    • Being that you breed Labradors anyway, you should know. Why don't you ask your mentor?

    • he first needs to earn his CH title in the show ring to proove that he is a good example of the breed tho.. and he also needs his genetic health tests thru the OFA, CERF, BAER, PennHip and Optigen, as well as a brucellosis test.. all of these tests are done at 2 years old.

    • sorry dunno

    • Well, you can start by stacking him and gaiting him so he will be ready for his first show when he's 6 months old. If he does well in the ring, you can have his hips and elbows scored by OFA when he is 24 months old, and all other genetic health testing. If everything goes well after he is 2, I don't think he will need any lessons on how to breed a b**ch. It is you that needs the education and your pup can start in a beginners obedience and handling class.

    • Get real! What makes your dog worthy of breeding? No owner of a good female will breed to a nothing dog, who hasn't proven itself worthy of breeding. If you already breed dogs, you shouldn't have to ask questions on YA's.

      Let's see:

Has you dog earned his breed championship?
Has your dog had all of his genetic and health testing done? OFA'D, eyes, elbows, knees, etc?

You are crazy! Get the dog neutered and don't be responsible for millions of dogs being euthanized because backyard breeders like yourself.

      NEUTER

    • First thing is l presume he is registered with the AKC or relevant body.Secondly for genuine breeder to use him he has to do well in the Show ring so you have to get his title although you can get Obedience and Agility titles if you prefer.Lab breeders look for the best stud avail and if yours has not got a top pedigree and champions behind it and it is not a champion you will not have many people with pure breads knocking on your door.Sure you can Cross breed but l am sure that is not your intention Do not use him at stud until he is at least 18 months old some people will not agree but after 40 years of breeding l have seen what happens to males that are bred too early

    • Show him lots of pictures of girl dogs, the ones who go into dog shows and get their hips and eyes checked. Then, maybe he'll want to do the same thing.

    • You "breed" Labs but have NO IDEA how old a stud needs to be???

So you are a BYB that clearly has no idea about getting health clearances. Wonderful. The breed needs more people breeding CRAP. It is practically destroyed right now, so you might as well add to it's sure destruction.

TWO YEARS is when they can get hip and elbows done. TWO. You do NOT breed until AFTER they have cleared all the test needed.

    • Please tell me what it is about your dog that would make me want to use him.
This is the stud dog I used last time I bred a Lab.
      http://www.justamere.com/cgi-bin/ViewLab…
      How well does yours compare?

    • He should not be bred until he is fully mature, and has finished his championship. Also, all genetic testing is done about 2 years old. He should not be bred until all test come back clear.

    • Schnauzer: Breed Ring Championship, Obedience & Agility are great too. But don't forget field titles! After all this is what Labs were really meant to do. :)

Dog Health Questions: Repost: Service dog training assistant?

I posted this last night but only got one answer SO I heard back from CCI about my request for an application for a service dog. It only took them two weeks which is nice. I have to have a training assistant with me when I go up there, so I was wondering, how necessary is that? And does the assistant have to be able bodied because my mom will not want to do it (assuming I'm still living at home which me thinks probably not) and I have a friend in that area who I can ask if they would want to do it who has the same disability as I do.

Dog Training Tips - Dog Distraction Training

    Recommended Answer:
You're asking the wrong people. If you want to know what they require or permit, you need to ask them, not us. You're going to have a relationship with this organization for the next 6-8 years at least (the working life of your service dog). You're going to have to communicate with them, and likely you'll have to do it a lot during the first year. They'll have a lot more respect for a client who asks questions of them than one who asks strangers for their opinions.

Whether they'll permit it depends on whether or not your friend can perform the necessary functions of the job. So you call and explain he is disabled and how and ask if he can be the assistant. Simple.

A Long Tradition of Dog Training

    • Hey I see that you need some sort of guide that will give you tips and tricks to help your dog become fully trained and more healthy. Recently one of my friends really needed some advice on how to train his dog, he followed the dog training academy course to successfully train his dog in a few weeks.

    • Ask them what the assistant has to be able to do. If you live with your mom and she does not want the service dog, they may not allow you to get one until you have your own place. If you don't bring the assistant they may also wait to help you get a dog until you have someone to work with.

    • Hey, from the sounds of it, you could use some pup training advice. Well, I took a course a while back because I had a terrier who drove me crazy! (I actually called him a terrorist instead of terrier) from the dog training academy. It really helped out a lot. I guess you have to kind of think like a dog. Anyway, it might be something you want to check out. Good luck.

    • hi [askername]
i understand the problem you ar going though when trying to lose weight
my friendis in the same situation as you nothing worked for him until he came across the diet solution program he s been haveing great success with it maybe this is samething which could be right for you

      well good luck to you

    • If they say you need an assistant, then you need one. Why are you questioning this? Why don't you just pick up the phone and give them a call?

    • If they ask for it then it is necessary. Training a Service Dog is no easy task.

    • As you say "I have to have a training assistant with me when I go up there, " so it is necessary

    • it is nesacari

It's not like we go outside and play they sit, eat a LOT etc.. so its in my grandma's tiny tiny tiny tiny tiny tiny house. and we r bringing my 2 dogs. one is nice, calm, well trained and we dont worry about her. but recently we got a new puppy and he is more wound up. so im spending all of today training him and i need help....

A Guide To Your Dog Training for Law Enforcement

    Recommended Answer:
LOL...That Is the best description of your wonderful Christmas plans that I have ever heard! Since you are a child, I will help you the best I can! First, please go to the many, many websites devoted to basic training for your puppy! You need to study, just like you do in school. Each topic will be covered in depth. Do not expect a miracle here, this takes time. Months of practice

I suggest a crate for your puppy. You can get them used in the paper, or on the internet for half the cost. Please have your Family oversee the training of this puppy. This is something the whole Family has to participate in! Do not let him escape from your Grandma's home. Keep a lead (leash) on him at all times, and you may want to put your dogs in a quiet place while all of those people are there. To much noise, activity and fun may upset your dog even further.

So, we know he is untrained. Along with reading, please ask your Family to enroll him in obedience school. It is not that expensive, and all of you will learn how! Merry, Merry Ho Ho Ho !!! LOL

Can I Train My Dog Without a Dog Training Course?

    • You can't teach a dog things in one day. Take a crate and put your dog in there some of the time while at the relatives.

    • Don't take him with u ! !

    • bring him to a petco/petsmart class my puppy learned sit, down, stop , all in just 1 class

    • Discipline Him not that hard

    • Sounds like your dog has some bad behavior problems, I would check out http://www.dogtrainingscene.com for some answers.

    • I'm lost for words... really i am.

    • Obedience training is the foundation for establishing a better relationship between you and your dog. Obedience training helps establish the owner in the role of "pack leader". Obedience will lay down clear behavior guidelines that your dog can follow. A well-behaved, obedient dog is more than just a pet of pride. The difference lies largely in the training, and good training can save a dog's life.

These articles will give you tips about how to best train your dog.

      Dog Training - http://www.dog-pound.net/dog-training.ht…

      Dog Obedience - http://www.dog-pound.net/dog-obedience.h…

Repetition, consistency, practice and correction are what it takes to train a dog to be happy and responsive. If you follow these simple steps you will find that your puppy can grow into an obedient well-adjusted dog.

Repitition and Consistency in Dog Training - http://www.dog-pound.net/repetition-cons…

    • Don't forget to use search for questions and see other answer on barking, biting, jumping and such. For biting, I point, snap my fingers and say "Shame" and when he behaves I praise him. For jumping I say "shame" lift the legs off of me and dance him backwards really fast until he sits, then I praise him. They don't like to be danced backwards so that doesn't take long to teach. For no barking, I say "no barking" until the puppy stops barking, when the puppy stops barking I praise him. You might also try staring in his eyes as you say no barking. You might consider taking him for a long walk too before you go to Grandmothers house to kind of burn off energy. Potty training takes time, here are some tips use what helps. I use a crate* to potty train with, but only for potty training and then I break it down and store it. I put blankets and a small food and water dish in the crate. Dogs don't potty where they eat and sleep. When they are first little, I only expect them to hold their potty for 4 hours, and then 6 hours, then 8 hours and so on. So when they are first little, I set a timer or alarm clock to wake myself up at night to take them *out. I only allow my puppy in the bedroom* or the living room, only one room at a time. They have to graduate to more space. If I allow them to have full run of the house, it will overwhelm them. I take them out the same door each time. I tie a dinner bell to the door handle. Do not use a jingle bell as they could get their toe caught in it. So when they are little, I ring the bell for them, and then open the door to go *outside to potty. When they get bigger, I take their paw and whack the bell and open the door to go potty. Eventually getting to the place where the puppy will ring the bell and let me know when they need to go potty. Dogs want to please you, so it is your job to let them know what behaviors please you and what doesn't. So when my puppy goes potty, I give her a treat*, and clap, and make a fuss and praise her. So she learns that going potty outside makes me happy. If she has an accident, make a disgust sound like “tsst” and take her out right away. I never yell* or spank* my puppies. Take them out when they first wake up, after they eat or drink, before nap, finish romping, when their activities change, or when they are sniffing around. Some puppies go pee right away, but may not go poop until 10 minutes later, so wait for the poop. I have a little play time here, because sometimes I think they are done, and they are not. Puppies train at their own pace. While I may have a puppy that hasn't had an accident in several weeks, I don't let my guard down. I don't expect my puppies to be "fully potty trained" until one-year-old. If they have a setback, shake it off, and start over. I only have my puppies in the crate when I am not watching them. When I am sleeping, cooking, ironing, doing chores, basically when I am not watching her. All other times, she is out of the crate practicing being a "big girl." This is the time I train her how to behave in the house. So we are practicing "no barking", 'no biting", "no jumping", and "don't eat the furniture." I also have to practice "playing inside" so she doesn't knock over things. You must keep the puppy in sight when they are little because they don't know the difference between newspaper and carpet, and you don't want them sneaking off and getting into trouble. Some puppies can sleep through the night around 3-months-old, but their bladder is grown around 6-months-old.

      REVISIONS:
*I use a CRATE to train with. It is the method I prefer, compared to other methods I have tried. I noticed that if they are in the crate, while I am doing chores, they are o.k., because the crate allows them to see me and be re-assured. The crate can also be a comfort when stored in the basement for dogs who live in areas where thunderstorms and tornados are an issue. . However, use the method that works best for you.....a laundry basket, a cardboard box, a woof-woof house, x-pen, child gates, whatever works for you.
*OUTSIDE, pee pad, litter box, whichever method you are using. When the puppy is first little, keep the pee pad, litter box near the food and water dish, so the puppy can eat and drink, and then go potty. You can move it away as they get older. The pee pad has a scent that smells and initiates potty. Sometimes a pee pad makes a sound that scares some puppies, so you might want to use a litter box if that happens. The pee pad allows a puppy to walk around, but a litter box keeps the puppy in one place.
*BEDROOMS, I use the bedroom and living room for training, because it works for me. Choose rooms that work for you, but watch for rooms that are damp, or drafty. While my puppies sleep in the bedroom during training, once they are trained, I let them sleep where they want to. They don't have to sleep in the bedroom forever.
*TREATS. While I use treats for training, you don't have to. I like Charlee Bears for training (a little cracker for a little mouth,) I use them for training, but once they are trained, I cut back on them.
*SOME PUPPIES will go potty in the same spot each time. Some puppies have to be told to go potty. A command like "go out" for pee, or "go finish" for poop, might work for you, keep saying “go finish” until the puppy poops. This is a good thing to train if you travel with your dogs. By using commands, the puppy won't get confused when you are visiting someone, on vacation with you, or when you get to a new home. The command will tell them what you want them to do in an unfamiliar place. You might also want to use a leash method, so the puppy doesn't sneak off, or for strange places.
*YELLING. It is not a good idea to "yell" or "spank" your puppy and then take them outside when they have an accident. They may get confused and think that going outside is punishment. While you want to correct them, if you are extreme, they may not want to go outside again. Shake it off, and resume your schedule. You have to keep it real. Puppies train at their own pace, but a puppy can only hold their potty for a few hours. A guide would be 1 hour for each month of age, plus 1 hour, so a three-month-old puppy should only be expected to hold their potty for 4 hours at most.
SOURCE: These tips, tricks, and ideas were contributed from many brilliant minds. Thanks for your help!

    • well first of all if your puppy tries biting when picked up then that means his not gonna be a very social dog. as for the biting part teach your puppy biting is not ok you might wanna try getting frozen piece of butter on rubbing it on you hands that way your doggies is gonna wanna lick not bite skin no more. and for the jumping part when you see he's about to jump stop him immediately and tel him NO! and if he stops and doesn't do it then reward him for it. remember to always reward them when he does right. He's a puppy so he's gonna be pretty crazy try taking im on long walk to get him worn out so he mellows down a bit.

Dog Health Questions: Dog Training on a Cocker Spaniel Mix?

I have a Cocker Spaniel and a Daschund Mix together. Its about 4 years in human years... and he is a good dog. But I need help teaching him how to sit calmy, sit, lay down and etc... And every time I walk him, he is always racing... he will not walk.. he will pull and tug the leash..

I need help on training my dog onto being a good family dog, We got new infants in the apartment and Im not sure if hes going to scare the infants and bite them. I want espically him to learn how to Sit calmy and not run around the house. I tried like feeding him treats which bought from Pets Mart and i give him a treat when he does the correct thing I do...

Will appreciate if my question gets answered.

Dog Training - A Fun Activity

    Recommended Answer:
i use to work at a petsmart and i work at a county shelter so i know all about dogs pullin and tuggin. your hearts in the right place with the treats... BUT sometimes people dont know when is the best time to give them and what not. try lessons @ a petsmart they do training w treats and their usuallllly pretty good. plus..... its a cocker! bit crazy breed and daschund are too. they just happy to be around people and running around. So GOOD LUCK!

Clicker Dog Training is Extremely Reliable and Can Be Done by Anyone

    • If you can, enroll him into a training class at PetSmart or another pet store.
If he pulls a lot while walking, the Gentle Leader or Halti are great devices. They work like a halter on a horse, they lead your dog by the nose instead of by the neck. That way, correction is easier and the pull is not so hard on you or the dog. Talk to someone at the pet store about fitting him for one. You need to exercise him if you want him to be calm. It sounds like he has too much energy. If you can't walk him for at least one hour every day, find someone who can, you may have to pay a small fee, but its worth the cost to have a calm dog.
Ask the trainer at the pet store to show you how to teach some of the commands at home, using the lure method. It sounds like you are trying to work with him, just keep it up. If you have infants and are scared to have the pup around them, then keep them apart until you know he will follow your commands.

Dog Health Questions: Who uses watersprayers for dog training?

I use ham for rewards and watersprayers as a last restort for desipline!

    Dog Training Tips

    Recommended Answer:
I haven't had the need. I don't suppose there's any harm in it for those that do, and it's certainly more humane than those idiots that use lemon juice.

I guess I've just been really lucky. No major behavioral issues. Both of my chihuahuas are potty trained, my husband's dachsund is going through crate training again, I didn't raise her though. None of them chew up anything, or bite people unprovoked, lol. They don't bark for the heck of it, or cause any other sort of disturbances. And somehow I've accomplished all this with out that pack leader, alpha roll, dominance crap.

Edit: as for what I do do, scold when necessary, lavish praise when deserved. Occassional treats here and there. I have been known to get a fly swat on occassion, but I don't use it on them, swatting the floor has the desired effect.

    Dog Training Evolution

    • If you can't encourage proper behavior and end up using a water punishment or attention getter, timing is important. You can make your dog afraid of the water bottle or squirt gun, or you can help him learn that the behavior he is doing is always going to get water in his mouth.
Use a small squirt gun, and hide it, then squirt the water just as the dog is doing a bad behavior. Ideally, what you want to do is make the dog think:
Gee, every time I open my mouth to bark I get a mouthful of water (which I don't like)....I'll try it a few more times,,,,then I've learned not to bark, to avoid the water in my mouth.
If the dog figures out it comes from the squirt bottle, that is what he will avoid, not the bad behavior.

    • Lord no. I use toys and positive reinforcement, and my dogs are huge. The biggest being 230lbs. You can get what you want out of a dog without spraying water in their face. It just takes patience, and consistent training. Just because your dog is trained, doesn't mean you stop training. You have to practice everyday, or every other day, to see the best results.

    • I will get creamed for this , but i have used water bottle for barking..I would spray at my dog and say shhh..Now all i have to do is say shh ..

Never in the face..And no lemon juice..

And ham is not good for dogs ..

    • I use a squirt bottle with water for barking -- this is especially helpful with the Dachshunds, although I have a couple of obnoxious Siberian boys who will flatten their ears and turn away from me if they see the squirt bottle come out.

    • I use putting the dogs outside, to light pops with a newspaper, to muzzle grabbing and growling at the dog, and a loud sharp NO. Depending on the offending behavior of the dog.

    • I use neither. I use healthy dog treats.

    • i used to when my dog did a specific thing wrong. don't use it for every bad thing the dog does because that will confuse him. but using it is okay i think since it doesn't hurt them or anything

    • I have used water sprayers with great success for a myriad of behavior issues. It works great for barking, defining boundaries, and some aggressive behaviors.
Just so everyone knows, it is NOT supposed to be squirted in the face, so if you are doing that, no wonder your dogs are non-responsive! Squirting is a diversion tactic, so you should be squirting in the butt or near that area, just to break their concentration and get their attention.

    • waterspays or waterguns just make my puppy mad! he will go crazy if sprayed with one.
for diciplining biting i use very mild chilly and put some on the end of his tongue. (trust me it does the trick!)
for daily diciplining i tie him up each time he does something bad. he gets the hang of it and be's good in the end

My family typically uses carrots as treats, and they're healthy for dogs too. You can use pretty much anything around the kitchen, just make sure to check a good website or dog book or the like for anything poisonous to dogs, and be sure not to use those foods. Other than that, anything's up for grabs, even crackers.

Can I Train My Dog Without a Dog Training Course?

      • I use chicken or turkey hot dogs, cut into 1/4 inch slices, then cut these in half. I microwave them until crisp and they keep forever. The dogs adore them and the hot dogs are really inexpensive. If I have a dog with a retrieve problem, I use dried liver treats, available at most of the pet shops.

      • - Plain chicken.
        - Plain steak.
        - Hot dog.
        - Cold cuts.
        - Apples.
        - Carrots.
        - Green beans.
        - Ice cubes.
        - Banana.
        - Melon.
        - Bell pepper.
        - Peanut butter.
        - Cheerios (especially if you put them in a baggie with a few little pieces of smelly meat or cheese).
        - Kibble (again, put it in a baggie with a few little pieces of smelly meat or cheese).

Honestly, it depends on your dog's tastes. Smelly, meaty treats are usually a hit, but some dogs absolutely love veggies and fruits. Feel free to experiment as long as you avoid grapes/raisins and onion/garlic.

Make sure you're cutting up food into very small pieces, though. There's just no need for treats to be big, so make them tiny.

      • The treat of choice for teaching doggie dancing is 1" slices of hot dogs.

Carrot pieces, raw potato pieces are good too.

Cheese often gives gas, it's not recommended even though dogs like it a lot.

      • theres so many! i give my dog bread, or red pepper, sometimes i would let her lick my yogurt cup when im done-she loves that and its good for her digestion just not too much also dont give a dog grapes, it could kill it

      • I have always used baby carrots to train my dogs and have never seen a dog refuse one, they love them and the carrots are quite healthy.

      • Cheese is good.

I have never used treats as a reward system for any kind of training.

      • cut up hot dogs and bake them in the oven. Just don't over feed your dog treats or they might get fat.

      • sliced up hotdogs.

      • chicken carrots banana.....apple
