Dog Health Questions: Unsatisfactory dog boarding experience with my greys?

Yahoo community I need your help. We went on a 9 day vacation and left our 2 greyhounds with a lady who does dog training and boarding at her home. She was recommended by the local rescue group. We went for a visit before we dropped the dogs off to discuss their issues.. mostly that greys are delicate and NOT yard dogs. We paid a premium price to board them in a home environment. And now that my dogs are home we realize that is not what we got. They have callouses, chapped skin, missing hair, and sunburn. They are stiff, lame, and sore. I already paid her and didnt inspect them closely until I got home. I was very tired when I picked them up and I trusted her and her reputation.

I would not use her again. I would also call her and ask what the heck she did to your dogs to cause this. It will be relevant if they need vet attention. Oh, and phone the rescue that recommended her and let them know what happened. They may be willing to stop recommending her to others.

  In the future maybe you can exchange dog sitting with other people within your own rescue. This is what our group does, and then instead of paying board, we make a donation to the group. So we are helping the hounds, as well as each other. (and your dogs stay in a home with other Greys)
  
  I'd be fuming about now ..........but if she did feed and care for your dogs, then I doubt you could get a refund of any type - as she did provide the service you contracted with her for.
  
  But I would make it well known to all pet owners I knew that the woman does not provide the quality of care that she advertises.

• Is it fenced off? If not I would suggest to use a long, or retractable lead. Let him wander far away on the lead and then call him to come.   "The complete guide to bird dog training" by John R Falk is one of the more popular training books. It's extremely comprehensive, teaching you what kind of dog to pick, how to pick from a litter, how to train the different breeds, etc.
  
  One of the best tools i've found for dog training is a show called "The Dog Whisperer" by Cesar Millan. His show is on the national geographic channel (which I don't get). I picked up Season 1 of his show on ebay for 35 bucks. It's worth every penny. This will teach you how to get inside your dogs mind and to understand how they think. If you don't get anything else, get this dvd set.

Good question! I am assuming this is a group training session? You probably won't be the only one with an excited dog. We took our lab for puppy training and intermediate training so I've been through it a couple of times. The instructor should know how to keep the dogs under control and they expect the first class to be somewhat crazy. After all, that's what you are there for. A firm tight leash (that cannot be chewed through and won't choke) is a must. You can ask your instructor for tips before you go- they are more than happy to help you to help them. If the training involves treat rewards, make sure you bring a supply. Don't be nervous, expect to have fun!

One bit of advanced training I recommend is doing all the things you've taught him, and take it to the Seuss level- can he do it on a box, can he do it with a fox (another dog nearby running around), can he do it here and there, can he do it anywhere? IOW, think of as many permutations as you can, and make sure the dog can do it anywhere under any conditions- could you go on Letterman with a crowd in front, bright lights, cameras that roll in, etc?

Have you considered training for a dog sport like agility or freestyle? Youtube has some videos that show lots of different behaviors/skills for these sports.

I also love doing some of the mental work that BCs love so much- playing hot and cold targeting games. If you have a chance to get to a Kathy Sdao seminar- go! I have some vids on youtube of my dog doing some hot and cold targeting

After a certain point, it is important to realize that a dog that feels as if they must strike out at others is not happy with their life, and it's better for it to be over. This isn't just for your convenience, it is for the dog to be at peace and out of the constant feeling of insecurity. It is a generous act of kindness to let it end.

Many dogs are euthanized each day - and a lot of those dogs would have gotten along with others just fine. It is far better to use that place for a dog that does not feel as if they have to fight their way through life, but can peacefully coexist.

Have your dog evaluated by a qualified evaluator, and go from there. While some things can be fixed, realize that others just cannot.

Rescue is not an easy business, and sometimes the hardest choice is the right one - even for the dog.

This is why a training class will be so helpful. You need to learn as much as your dog does. I'm not saying that to be mean. You will see what I'm talking about as you take the class. It's amazing the great things YOU learn to help you through this. Remember, the majority of our dogs behavior problems are OUR fault. We have to teach them the rules of the house and how to behave.
