Dog Health Questions: What is a good location to?

I want to have my own dog training facility. What is a good location for a dog training facility? I also want an area near-ish a shelter, as I want to train dogs for the shelter for free so that they can get homes. I also want to help police when they have cases involving animals as I have a natural bond with dogs and they trust me. Any suggestions of good places?

Aggressive Dog Training: 6 Tips to Civilize Your Dog

Recommended Answer:
Well I was going to say Wyoming, but the population insn't big enough for that...so...
maybe like...Salt Lake City, UT...its the city, but you're like 30 minutes from the middle of nowhere!

Denver, Co is nice too!

Reward Dog Training

  • First of all, you're trying to do too much.

You need to have a business plan, study the pet population and the spending habits of a location on their pets - or it won't matter. Then, you need to look at the real estate costs in that area. It is often a harsh reality that the facilities that are affordable are not near the population that would pay for them.

On top of that, you'r first task would be to make the center a viable one - before you give anything away. That would easily take up all your time and energy for well over a year. And depending upon the shelter, most facilities of that kind cannot afford to have the shelter dogs on the premises for fear of bringing diseases in to the paying clientele.

As for the police work, you need to be highly qualified to do animal investigations. That's a whole different career.

I think you would have to pick which of these things you want to do first, and start with that.

Dog Health Questions: Dog training?

How do you train your dog to bring u his plate when u feed him?

Dog Training and the Dog-Human Bond

Recommended Answer:
Try this....tell her to "hold the bowl" then give her a treat and lots of praise. Keep going until she gets it. When she does ask her if she wants dinner, breakfast or whatever and tell her to "hold the bowl", then feed her.

Dog Training Tricks - Cool Dog Tricks To Teach Your Dog

  • My Dobe does this on her own but if you have the dog hold the bowl in it's mouth each time you feed her/him then take it from them and fill the bowl I imagine they would get the clue quickly.

Dog Health Questions: Good breed for a first time dog owner?

Well not exactly "first time".
When I was 8 I had a beagle and we had to give it away for it's own good to a good owner that could train it.
When I was 10 we had a jack Russell, again gave it away because of it's health problems (skin condition).
I'm 13 now, mature, researched the breeds, will enrol in dog training classes. So this will be my first proper dog. What dog would you recommend? It needs to be large ish. Like as big as a Labrador/husky/golden retriever.
It's definitely not going to be given away this time.
Thanks xx ;)
Ps: I have an annoying family and annoying 8 yr old brother.

Finding the Essential Dog Training Supplies

Recommended Answer:
A Lab, Retriever or Collie are always good choices because they are generally smart, easy to train and patient with younger children.

Service Dog Training, Teaching Dogs to Assist the Infirm

  • A dog from a rescue group or shelter, that is full grown, and has at least some training.

You need to make sure this dog causes the least possible disruption to the household possible, or it may be given away too. Puppies chew and need a lot of attention and time, getting them fixed is also expensive.

Good luck, if this dog is given away too, do not even think of getting another. 3 strikes you are out, no more dogs for you.

  • A good all-around large breed dog is the golden retriever. They are easy to train, will do anything to please owner, loyal, and super loving. There is some coat care and they shed, also they need daily exercise. Look for a well-bred dog--no inbreeding or puppy mills to avoid common health problems that can become concentrated in a small gene pool such as seizure disorder, malformed hips, and cancer.

  • I would say a Labrador they are great animals fun, loving. They are big so they need exercise but who can't benefit from walking the dog everyday. They are very easy to train to, they seem to meet you half way.

  • You shouldn't have given your dogs away because they're problematic. You suck.

  • I would say for sure a golden retriever. They are very easy to train dogs and are very family friendly.

  • golden retrievers are very friendly

Dog Health Questions: I hate my dog, Like a love/hate situation but always hate. How can I overcome this?

I got a dog so I could go on walks, and I loved her when I first got her as a puppy. But when she grew more, she chews everything, never listens, and most of all she is ALWAYS happy and you can't discipline her. Everyone in the family loves her but me, and she doesn't care for me either. They take her to the beach and it just gets me in a bad mood along with my mom which is when it gets worse. Every day I come home to see her getting loved and everyone not caring about how she ate my books and shoes, it just gets me infuriated. I can never have a great day with her, and then my parents give me a load of "complaints" about how I treat them like trash because I don't talk to them when its the dog!
We can't get rid of her (Everyone else loves her)
I can't get along (I have tried loving her too many times)
I can't train her (She doesn't know the words "Bad dog" and everyone pets her when she does something wrong, I even paid to get a pro come and I spend $50 on dog training books)
What can I do? Because of this dog I isolate myself to keep her away.

Puppy and Dog Training - How to Train Puppies and Dogs on a Lead - Easy to Follow Dog Training Steps

Recommended Answer:
Your dog is a mirror for your jealousy and feelings of being ignored. Find the real focus of your anger and forgive yourself and others.

Overview of Dog Training

  • This dog needs training to stop its unacceptable behaviour, but the whole family needs to be involved in this. Dogs only respond to good training when it's consistent, so the rest of your family giving the dog positive reinforcement when it does something wrong is going to have the opposite effect. You need to talk to your parents and ask if you can take it to an obedience class, with the whole family attending so that they all learn what they need to do. Tell them you are not happy because the dog is destructive.

  • i tink you have a serious problem. talk to your parent about this problem in great detail expressing how you feel about this situation deeply. you shouldnt be treated like that for sure. If your parents dont listen what can you do? they are you parents after all. And if they do then think about giving your dog to an animal shelter of pet giveaway event or something similar to what i just listed. good luck. hope this helps!

Dog Health Questions: What is a good gift to give a pet sitter/boarder?

The person who watches my dog does such a great job and he didn't even charge me the last time I dropped her off for a long weekend. He has his own boarding/dog training business and I am trying to think of a nice gift to give him to say "thanks". Any suggestions?

How Dog Training Can Help You Find the Perfect Family Dog

Recommended Answer:
If you know what his interests are, get him a nice hard cover book.

You could also take him out to dinner.

A gift card to a store he likes is always a nice touch.

Certainly it should be substantial, since he did something of considerable value for you without pay.

I think you ought to work on a way of paying him in the future, but if that is awkward for him (never mind your financial situation), then your gift ought to be something of at least vaguely equivalent value. That's the neat thing about a gift card, and yet with a gift card, no actual money changes hands.

Dog Health Questions: Dog clicker for sale?

where can i buy a dog clicker for dog training in Wise Virginia?and how much does it normally cost?

Can I Train My Dog Without a Dog Training Course?

  • dog schoool which use them sell them and most pet stores I believe.

at the dog school were I work we charge 2.50 euro's and 3,- euros for the ones that look awsome

  • Hello,
You can find it at petco, the cost is around $2, but you can save %10 if you buy it online :)

  • The clicker won't do you any good unless you take a course on how to train your dog with it. If you do take the course, the clicker will be for sale there - I paid $ 1.- for one.

By the way, I found clicker training to be absolutely ridiculous, but that was for a dachshund, so maybe it was the breed. I didn't like the training, the use of constant treats, starving the dog for 2 days before the course so he would want the treat (had no idea that was necessary, my friend had the dog and I was the co=trainer), etc.

I found a trainer who trains the local police and rescue dogs, she uses praise instead of hunger and fear - my dogs actually enjoyed the training, and we all got a lot out of it - NO clickers, praise and the gentle leader worked great.
We established trust and bonding with our dogs, that's the way to go as far as I'm concerned.

  • bought my last one at petsmart it was right up at the counter ppl were buying them like crazy:) theirs some well trained dogs that show up regularly here and those people saw them using them.

  • when you are at pets mart in the line , there is a bin of them on the counter there, they cost like 97 cents.

Dog Health Questions: So I want to be a Dog Trainer...?

Im interested in joining the field of dog trainers, but am not sure where to start. Where can you go with a Dog training degree? Average Salary? What are the employers like?...Thanks Guys!!

Dog Training Aids - Do You Know How Safe The Methods Used For Dog Obedience Training Are?

Recommended Answer:
The dog training field needs more people passionate in dog training. I encourage you to pursue your interest. Get as much experience handling dogs, even if it's not in dog training. Cesar Millan from Dog whisperer started out at a dog grooming salon. My sister's Petsmart dog trainer started by just training her own dogs. You can volunteer at shelters, work at pet stores, train your relative's dogs, etc. Most popular dog trainer's business is all through word of mouth. If you are passionate and persistent in your job people WILL notice and you'll get where you wanna go.

Don't get discouraged by other people's opinions because no matter what you do, there will be people against you. Do what you believe and what's right. Best Wishes.

Free Dog Training Tips

  • To get certificate, you will have to attend a dog training school and complete the required courses. but mostly dog trainers are self educated. they study the training methods and behaviors of dogs on their own, attend conventions, and learn from other trainers. There are no known degrees for dog training but some college do offer programs that are similar to the subject, such as behavioral psychology and veterinary sciences. Some dog trainers are self employed, some work for small businesses, and sometimes for other pet related businesses. The greatest first step to take is to join the Association of Pet Dog Trainers. It offers great opportunities and Information. The salary really depends on how good you are at it and how many skills you have. The average hourly wage is $10.50, but in order to really make a good salary you need to know what you are doing and know the business end of being a dog trainer.

  • You start by finding a good trainer to teach you how to train dogs. I don't mean the box store trainer but a person who has trained large dogs, small dogs, nice dogs, mean dogs, hairy dogs, and hairless dogs. This person should have a good track record and should be able to prove it. Sure reading books and attending classes will help but nothing takes the place of good old experience. I'm always cautious about dog training schools especially online ones. Most cannot prove that a student can actually train dogs.

I can't give you an average salary as most trainers train on the side as a hobby. Some full-time trainers do boarding and grooming as well as training, so it's hard to tell where most of the money is coming from. Most trainers are employers having their own business.

To be a good trainer, not only do you need good dog training ability but you need to have good business skills and people skills. Some trainer wannabes forget that each dog they train comes attached to a person. A good trainer also has to be a good person teacher.

  • There is NO "dog training degree". Period. Many trainers learn what they know by finding someone in the field to MENTOR them. They mentor on their own time and have a PT job on the side, unless they're lucky enough to find someone to pay as they train. Not very likely though.

Salary can be as little as $9/hour (starter trainer, working under group or business) to as high as $20/hour (private trainer with 25+ years experience).

If you work FOR a group, organization, or business then what the "employers are like" varies. Just like in any job you can get a great employer or a horrible one. When working for yourself, well.... you can answer that one. But either way you'll be dealing with people as well as dogs, and people can get NASTY when they don't hear what they want to hear or when they become frustrated.

    http://careers.stateuniversity.com/pages…
    http://www.simplyhired.com/a/salary/sear…

  • Start training a dog. I'd get a labrador from strong working lines and title him with a utility in obedience, work him on scentwork and get him narcotics certified and therapy dog certified. If you really want a challenge, field trial title him. Then let your results speak for themselves to attract clients.

  • Where can you go with a Dog training degree? No such thing as a dog training degree.
Average Salary? Minimum wage to start.
What are the employers like? Let's just put it this way...."You better have thick skin".

Dog Health Questions: Okay. can't have a dog, but i'd still like to train and care for one besides our other dog?

I LOVE DOGS especially smaller ones. but im not allowed to have one. id like to be able to walk dogs, train, and care for tem. but my street is busy. is a dog daycare okay? im 12 how much would it cost, and wat would i need?

What Is The Best Approach To Dog Training?

Recommended Answer:
Why not volunteer with an animal rescue centre?
In England (sorry, not sure where you are!) the RSPCA are always looking for people to help out, a lot of dog walking, cleaning kennels, interacting with the animals, etc.
I volunteered with them for a few years when I was 17 and I loved it, I only did it every 2 weeks due to other commitments, but it was really nice to know I was giving the animals something they didn't have prior to being rescued.

Using Dog Training Collars to Train Your Dog

  • Unfortunately you are much too young to open a doggy day care, it would require a permit from the area where you live, lots of liability insurance, health inspections, etc.

Have you considered doing some volunteer work at one of the shelters? They have a great need as the more people there working with the dogs the sooner they become socialized enough to be placed in new forever homes.

  • Maybe you could join/ask a 4H club and ask them. I know i was in one and i have alot of dog handling books and training books. But maybe a poster to advertise your 'daycare' or you could go around asking your neighbors.

  • Certainly look into volunteering. It is very rewarding and you get the chance to scope the exact breed that you'll want when you're older and can have one. Good luck.

  • If your not allowed to have dogs, then there is no way you will be able to have a doggy daycare.

Offer to help out at your local animal shelter.

Dog Health Questions: Is Uncle Matty Dog Training any good?

I was just wondering if anyone has used this service and what results you got and if it is worth checking into.

Clicker Dog Training

Recommended Answer:
I have not heard his name for years.

I was in an infomercial for him many years ago with my dog.

I don't think much of him as a trainer, he really was ahead of his time in marketing though and was big here in Southern California for a time. He did use an annoying hight pitch voiced with the dogs that made nails on a chalk board sound good.

I totally love the Thumb loop leash he sells on his website. Its what I use in competition and training for obedience.

http://www.unclematty.com/store/closeup.…

Here is his website http://www.unclematty.comADD: If you are looking for a dog trainer in the Los Angeles area where you can train with your dog, I can give you a link here.
I would NOT send a dog to his "training school" or work with one of his so called "trainers". They become trainers by doing an online class...ay yi yi

I can give you a referral to someone who trained with Bill Koehler.

Easy Dog Obedience Training Can Be Done at Home With a Do it Yourself Dog Training Program

  • Never heard of it.
Wish you'd told us what size and breed you have.

I have not been impressed with obedience classes for dogs. There's just too much chaos for the dog to focus on the owner. They have other dogs to smell, other owners to hear, the trainer usually focues in on the worst dog while the others aren't being instructed on correct proceedure.

I have watched puppy obedience at Petsmart. They accomplished absolutely nothing while I watched one session. No one was listening to the trainer. They were lucky to be able to hear her.

If you have a larger breed, I would suggest buying Leerburg's Basic Obedience Training DVD. $40 and if you follow it you'll get a very well-behaved dog who will listen to you within a season of training. But you must meet the exercise needs of whatever breed you own also. And learn to be your dog's Pack Leader no matter what size it is.

  • Hi friend, Actually i don't know much about Uncle Matty Dog Training, but i have used tips that give my puppy a change. you can check it out at the site below.

  • Based on what I've seen of him on TV - I wouldn't hire him or recommend to others. I haven't even seen or heard anything of him for years, until this question :)

  • I have never hear of that one, but it might be a good one to try and see what results you will get.

Dog Health Questions: Any dog training tips?!?

Okay, so i have a female boxer who is about one year old . We are trying to house-break her, and at first it was going good. We got a bird bell and she jumped up on the door and rang it every time she had to go outside... And since she was doing good we started to give her treats when she went to the bathroom outside, But now i think she is confused.. Because now she doesn't ring the bell at all and goes to the bathroom on the floor all the time! Did the treats make her think every time she went she gets one? I dont know what i did wrong . Any advice?

Dog Training - Basics

Recommended Answer:
Forget about food treats, forget about the bell...take her out as you would do a pup after eating, after waking and after playing and sometimes in between, stand silently with her until she is going to the toilet, then as she is doing it put a word or words to it, I use 'be clean'..then good girl do this EVER time, no chatting telling her to go, nothing except the word/s you choose to say when she is doing it...she will then associate the command with the action....restrict her space in the house unless you can supervise her and NEVER tell her off if you find something, ONLY if you catch her in the act, a quick 'no' then silently take her out and wait....if she is unsupervised and finding some dificulty in understanding what you have been teaching then that is not her fault...clean up with her not around and FORGET it, no telling her" I have just cleaned up again after you" or anything else as it will make her anxious and that will make it worse....onceyou have been training this consistantly for a week, open the door and tell her ' be clean'...now you have a dog who will toilet on cmmand.....then re-introduce the bell, so you ring bell, open door and 'be clean'....keep it simple, keep calm and as little commands as possible.

How to Select a Good Online Dog Training Course

  • Yes I believe the dog thought that she would get treats everytime she goes to the bathroom outside. Treats are usually used at the time of the training - this is to make them learn faster and once they do, you can discontinue giving them treats.. in your case the treats came after she have learned house-break.. As much as possible we wouldn't want to confuse our dog as these mistakes will not only lead to frustration with your dog training, they can be dangerous to your dogs mental development (which can lead to your dog experiencing stress related problems later on). You can check out http://www.antileon-ent.com/dog/ for the common mistakes and how to correct them for better training for your dog.

  • im not giong to lie i think that the show on animal planet helps with all sorts of training its called "its me or the dog" will help you tremdisly i had some same problems i tried some of the things she does on their and they work! just have to stay consistant.. no joke watch it!!!!

  • If she goes on the floor again, hit her on the head and say "Bad Girl/Boy!" And ring the bell and say "You ring the bell if you have peepee!"

  • If this a sudden set-back then it is most likely a urinary track infection. go the vet a get some antibiotics

  • Hmm...that might be the case. You have to start from square one again.
Take her out every hour or so (just in case) and if she pees where you want her to pee, then praise and pet.
If she pees indoors, stop her before she lets it all out and put her outside (then clean up the mess)
You can try crate training too.

Dog Health Questions: Guard Dog Training...?

I have a big dream of someday becoming a guard and personal protection trainer. I have searched the web looking for details on the work and job, but can't seem to find one touch of helpful information. Experienced details would be excellent.

What will I need to do in order to become the trainer? Any certificates, studying specific dog behaviours? Even Sch or Ipo titles?

And what is the yearly income of an average trainer in the work?

I still don't know how I'll ever end up breaking the dream to my parents in the end, but hopefully they'll understand. Thanks for all the help and time you give.

Learn More About Some Of The Best Ways To Begin Dog Training And More About What Not To Do

Recommended Answer:
Probably the easiest thing is to join your local Schutzhund club. This will help you understand the dogs drives. AS far as "civil" work, you really need someone with experience to show you how it's done. "Reading" the dog is extremely important...you can't just follow a "step by step" method type of training. The "helper", "agitator", "bad guy" (whatever you wanna call him) is the one training the dog. When to confront him, and when to revert to a submissive posture is what you need to understand. Timing is EVERYTHING (and of course...the right dog).

There is no school, no certificates. You Schutzhund club should have seminars from time to time that may help. Keep in mind that a majority of schutzhund trainers now are looking completely for "prey" drive dogs....these will NOT protect you in a real situation. A good balance of "prey" and "civil" makes the best overall protection dog. Blind aggression makes a good "junk yard" or "guard" dog.

My first day went like this..."They asked why I wanted to train dogs" I said "$3it, I don't wanna train dogs....I wanna put on that sleeve and get bit" They chained a dog up and told me to "piss him off without touching him"....when I came back, they said "You're on the clock...but you'll also apprentice training obedience". Starting pay was $250 a week....a long, long, long time ago. Now, my "low-end" dogs sell for $15,000.

Good luck with the parents, Loki!

Dog Training - The Right and Wrong Way

  • Hi Loki i don't know a lot about this subject but you can go on my contacts page and some of my contacts might be able to help you.

  • When I was working with K9's, I had to lose *EVERYTHING* I had ever learned about training 'pets'..
If you enjoy having a family 'pet'..you may not enjoy the rigid discipline of training protection dogs. Much of what you consider today as 'cruel'..is a necessity in developing a good personal protection or police K9.

What I found hardest, was the strict rules of what pet owners would call 'socializing'. ( beginning at 5 or 6 weeks old!) These dogs can't enjoy the company of other people's dogs or even of sociable strangers. They must have ONE focus..basically, stay ON GUARD, and what might be considered a, 'search and destroy', attitude.

They don't learn how to 'play nice'..but that their only play is their work.

If you want to make a career of dog training, you might do better to think about training assistance dogs, search/rescue dogs, or just be a family 'pet' trainer to keep good dogs out of 'jail'..The professional family dog trainers (rehabbers) make very good income, and are much in demand.

To answer your question, no certificate is necessary to train dogs in any discipline. It isn't a regulated field, yet.
You may find a mentor at your local schutzhund club, by doing a search for 'schutzhund, and your zip code..Your local Kennel Club might also point you in the right direction.
You will see the basics of schutzhund, here>
    http://www.schutzhund-training.com/

Although schutzhund is fun, it is still a far cry form 'real' protection training.

If you will email me your region, I may be able to find a nearby protection trainer..An interview with a pro would be a good thing.

Here is a link to NASAR..which will show you the basics of Search and Rescue. You will learn enough to know if that interests you.

Dog Health Questions: Dog training. please help?

Ok. I have a German Shepard and a Border Collie/Australian Shepard. the Border Collie/Australian Shepard is 5, or 6 maybe older? (We got her from the pound and they did not know here age. just an estimate, a year ago it was ?4?) she is a really good dog. The German shepard is a little over a year old, she is the problem one. First, and most important thing i want German Shepard to stop is when me and my dad go four wheeling she barks and bits the tires and when we are going she runs right in front of us not letting us pass her. Second, she digs random holes and also digs under the fence (then runs straight to the front porch so we will let her back in). I think the Border Collie/Australian Shepard digs alittle bit but not as bad. Third, the two fight pretty often for play but then every so often they are not playing. (they have been around each other since the German Shepard was a pup, but for the last 3 months they have been around each other constantly). please any suggestions on how to stop the German Shepard bad habits.

Choosing Dog Training Equipment

Recommended Answer:
Well I know a lot of people don't like this idea, but for my Shepherd I got a shock collar. It will almost instantly solve the problem with the four wheeler, and if catch her digging a hole and use it then that problem will be gone too. Honestly the collar only needs to be used a couple times for each problem and then you wont need to use it anymore.

Successful Dog Training at Home - Having the Right Mindset

  • I used to have the same problem. I have had 7 terriers, and they are naturally hyper, as you may already know.

I have tried trainers, books, etc. all with not much luck.

A few years back, I bought an ebook training system called "The Secrets To Dog Training," from a website called Puppy Professor http://puppyprofessor.comyr.com/training and it made all the difference in the world.

I won't need another trainer again, this book has it all, even a chapter on dog whispering, like Cesar Milan, that is way cool.

I encourage you to check it out. It has saved me time, and most of all money. It's like $40 i believe, but it's 7 or 8 books all in one package. Really, it's an incredible deal, and a tremendous help.

The link is in the resource box

    Thanks

    Dan

  • Hi!

You should train your dog with a proven system. There is a guide I used and got great results. It is called 'SitStayFetch'...

But, what exactly makes this guide so special? Would it be something that can really help you train your dog?

When you first download SitStayFetch, you may become overwhelmed with the sheer volume of material presented. Not only do you get over 170 pages of information, but you also get nine audio files, eight videos and several bonus books.

What you will quickly notice with this book is that it's very well organized. It comes with a detailed table of contents for quick reference. It really helps the user get a quick overview of what's to come and to also go directly to a specific area of the book they need to look at.

The content of SitStayFetch is actually used by leading dog training professionals around the world. The solutions to numerous behavioral problems such as barking, aggression, chewing, digging and jumping are offered to the reader in great detail.

Another great aspect of SitStayFetch is that it allows you to correct an older dog's retained habits so the saying "you can teach an old dog new tricks" does not apply if you implement the methods found in this book.

Beside the obedience training commands and tricks you will learn, here are just some issues you can eliminate by using Sit Stay Fetch:

    - Puppy and Dog Aggression
    - Biting and Nipping
    - Bad Breath
    - Dealing with 2 dogs in the house
    - Jumping on people and furniture
    - Jealousy
    - Fighting with other dogs
    - Fear of leash
    - Hot weather
    - Separation anxiety
    - Housebreaking and house training

The SitStayFetch guide contains full color photographs that will help make you own learning process even easier. You can also get a set of 8 videos which will further complement the main guide. With the videos, you will be able to see the dog training techniques in action which is probably the best way to learn the material.

The first section is an introduction for people who are considering buying a dog or puppy and for first time dog providers. The second division is for more experienced dog owners. The last part goes into more detail on the increasingly popular technique of "dog whispering", as well as learning more regarding common and uncommon dog problems, and teaching more advanced commands and tricks.

You will agree that this appears like a wonderful dog training guide. And I have found out that it really is. My amazing dog has never been so much of a delight!

Check out my source, hope it'll help. Good luck!

Dog Health Questions: How do I get my 4 month old pup to stop biting on our 6 year old dog??

Do I need to spray the older one with apple bitter spray?! Seriously though, we've been trying to introduce this pup to her house mate & she's being a total pain about it. The adult is always sniffing her & willing to sit on the couch & chill, yet the puppy thinks she needs to nibble on her & go nuts. My dog training guide claims I should leash her while the adult is nearby & give her treats when she sits/stays in her spot. But, all that's been doing is getting her more riled up & ready to pounce on the adult! The adult growls at her when the leash is taken out too. Overall, the damn puppy is being nippy anyway. She's a shepherd/lab/chow mix & the adult is mostly labrador. Is there any hope? I wasn't sure if she's just being like this because she's a young dumb-dumb of a puppy.

Animal Husbandry And Other Unnatural Acts: A Career in Dog Training

Recommended Answer:
You are pack leader. Then comes all humans in the family, then comes older dog, puppy is the lowest in pecking order. Keeping a close eye on them, you should allow older dog to discipline the puppy, the way it occurs in nature.
You should walk the puppy at least 45 minutes at a time, this means YOU walking PUPPY, not puppy walking you. You decide on route, and sniffing time. You are the boss.

Dog Training School

  • Hit him.

  • When your older dog gets tired of it, he/she will let her know! Sometimes it takes another dog to teach the little one to stop biting on them! I have 2 AKC registered shelties, and my little one has already learned a thing or two! He's only 12 weeks old!

  • Get a spray bottle with water and spray the puppy whenever she does something bad like this. If that doesn't bother her, make a loud noise like clapping your hands. The point here is to do something unpleasant every time she does something bad. You could also try hitting her on the nose, works for some dogs, but I don't think hitting is a good idea in any form, and sometimes it just makes them more riled up.

  • my problem is the other way around, my older dog will not leave the puppy alone. go figure

  • whats wrong with you, just let the dog sort it out do not leash one and not the other, that is asking for trouble.
let them loose and when the bigger dog has had enough he will growl and then bite the little one
and respect is born ,if they are both males a fight is unavoidable and has to happen in order to establish pecking order,
they will settle down if nature is given the change to run its course.but dont have one constricted and the other one not
also pet bopth dogs at the same times and fuss over both at the same time,Dogs like people can get very jalous.

  • NEVER HIT YOUR ANIMALS!!! female dogs will always try to be "top dog" your other dog will let her know if she is out of line. I have a 4 yr old male Akita and a 2yrold female Akita. when I first introduced them to each other she did the same thing and my male did let her know when enough was enough. needless to say she is the ruler of him the big Bitc* all females do this and it is normal.

  • If you spray the little dog while it is chewing on your other dog there is a good chance that you will get the older dog wet too and that might prove to be very confusing for your adult dog. Same with clapping your hands. You know your adult dog best. Has he/she ever shown aggressiveness towards other dogs? If not let them work it out amongst themselves as much as possible. They can communicate in their own language. If the older dog snaps the little dog it will probably be a warning. Even if the puppy yelps a little. This will work provided that your adult dog is not seriously injuring your puppy.

Dog Health Questions: Dog training vest illegal?

hi is it illegal for a company to not allow my service dog in there store. my dog has a service dog vest. and costco said i couldn't bring him in. do i need some sort of papers to prove that i am disabled and that my dog is my service dog? thanks

Dog Training Tips - Rules for Dog Trainers and Dog Owners

Recommended Answer:
It is illegal for them to not allow the dog in. You do need papers, but the papers do not necessarily have to say WHY you have your dog. It is actually ILLEGAL for them to ask you why you have the dog. It is none of their business!

I'm pretty shocked that you don't know of this information already! You should really consider speaking with the people who trained your dog.

Give your dog a pat on the head for me! I love a good working dog! :D

{{...*Spontania*...}}

A Few Dog Training Success Tips You Need to Know

  • Honestly, I'm not sure about the "needing papers" part, but it's definitely illegal for a store to refuse a registered service dog. I would recommend you contact the organization that your dog is registered through, and ask them if there is anything you need and what the policy is when that happens!Good luck!

  • I would talk to the organization that provided the service dog. I feel sure they would know all the ins and outs of the applicable laws. It's my opinion that they should allow the dog in the store, but then, I'm not a lawyer nor do I know that law.

  • No, they are *not* allowed to do this! The only thing that the store is allowed to do, is to ask you *if* the dog is a service dog used to assist with a disability. They can *NOT* ask you to show proof of said disability, and they can not ask you or the dog to leave the premises. That is illegal.

Here is the website for ADA. You should be able to find more information here, and how to go about reporting this particular store:
    http://www.ada.gov/

I'm really sorry that this happened... it isn't right.

  • It is most certainly illegal for them not to let your dog in, especially if he's wearing a service vest. It shouldn't be necessary for you to carry papers around with you, too.

There was a case in Floria last year where a blind man wasn't all lowed in a little convenience store with his guide dog. The guy sued and won. Find a lawyer quick. You can definitely sue them.

Aside from that, I worked for lawyers my whole life so I know something about the law and service dogs.

  • 1. You must have a medically certifiable disablity that a doctor has said a service dog would be of use in assisting you.

    2. Read this. http://www.ada.gov/qasrvc.htm

Short answer- No, you don't need papers. If you are disabled and require the use of a Service Dog and are excluded from entering a public place ask to speak with a manager. Have a printed copy of the ADA guidelines with you... ask the manager to call the police to escort you off the premises... then tell them you will be contacting the ACLU for legal assistance to sue them.

    Positive- The business learns something
More Positive- You will be awarded $$.
Negative- If you don't have a disability you get a jail sentence.

  • It is illegal to ask you for more info except that you are disabled and the dog is a service dog. Costco is notorios for refusing. A company can only refuse if they can prove the dog is a hazard to their company or their ability to do business. Companies often have trouble knowing how to comply with regulations. Contact Better Business Borough of your city or look up Disability laws/service animals. The reason some people have difficulty with getting their dogs in is because some companies have been tricked before....people saying their pet is service dogs or the person has little control over the animal (even service dogs can be removed if it is bothering people....barking, etc). Remember, keep your cool when dealing with companies. You are out there representing other disabled. What you do today with your service animal carries into the future for other people.

  • Nope you don't need papers, and it is not legal for them to deny you entry with your dog. You are not required to provide proof of anything, and it is not legal for them to even ask you why you need the dog.

It would be in your best interest to get a copy of the disabilities law stating the rules on service dogs and know it yourself. Also, you could help to educate people on the subject by caring a copy with you and providing it to anyone who does question you. Many people just don't know the rules, and if you were to teach them they may be more understanding.

    http://www.k9man.com/service_dog_access.…

To be honest, I'm wondering why you were not provided a copy of the federal law when you got your dog. (I guess that depends how you actually got the dog, though)

  • I have worked in retail and we were told to not even ask if the dog was a service dog just assume it is. They were very afraid of a lawsuit. Costco has a lot of nerve and obviously money to lose too.

  • As long as your dog had the I.D. vest on, they should not refuse entry. They are not allowed to refuse entry to a service dog in training. I train dogs with a couple ladies who do the training for Therapetic Dogs of Oklahoma.
They take the trainees out and about with them. They wear the I.D. vest and go to restaurants and stores.

  • You can print out the information from the government website and show it to them. It is a violation on federal law to deny access to a service dog in the United States. You do not have to give them any info about your medical condition and it's none of their business. There is also an 800 number that you or they can call for more info.

Try to be nice at first. If that doesn't work, demand to see a manager and ask if they'd like to be on the TV News for discrimination and have your lawyer call them.

Of course, if your dog is a disruption (eg barking in a movie theater) or a threat (eg growling at other customers), they can require you to leave the premises. But a well-trained service animal should never be doing that.

Dog Health Questions: Dog training qusetion?

Hey,
I am getting my puppy on July 10th. He will be about 9 weeks old. Anyway, thats in my summer, I dont have school. I will have two months with the puppy to start house training and crate training him. When i go back to school, unitl he is big enough and is reliable in thehome, he will be crated... for 7 hours. Ok, chill now.. I KNOW puppies cant be contained that long without food or going to the bathroom.

What we did with our family dog is that we did the same thing I listed above... and we had our neighbor come once in the middle of the day to feed and give water, play a little, then take out to go to the bathroom, then put back in crate.

I was wondering if I can do that with my maltese puppy? I know that if you leave a dog in a crate to long they can start to soil (they have no other choice) and eventually will stop caring why they soil, and will be harder to house train.

So basically, for about a month, would it work to have my neighbor come once during the day to let out, feed, water, play, and take out to go to the bathroom, every day? This is what we did with our family dog.. and she is very laid back, calm, and housetrained eaisily and has had no accidents.

thanks!

Dog Training Problems - How to Eliminate Them and Get Good Results Training Your Dog

Recommended Answer:
Sounds like a good plan to me. The rule is that a puppy can stay crated for only one hour for each month of age. Your puppy should at 4 months of age be able to stay for 4 hours in a crate at a time. Never over 8 hours at any age.

Dog Health Questions: Positive Dog Training Using Food?

I have been doing a lot of research on dogs and am so far a big fan of Cesar Millan's (calm down people, I unlike most, know that his "forceful" techniques seen on his show are used for dangerous, aggressive dogs, and not training). If you actually read his book, you would know that he is full of information on how dogs should be properly treated as far as exercise, discipline, and then affection. That being said I am looking up positive reinforcement dog training which often uses treats. My question is, when your dog associates a command with a treat, and then you take that treat away, and expect them to do a command, won't they miss the treat? I understand that you are suppose to replace the treat with affection, but they are not the same thing to a dog. Can you just use affection and not treats in training?

The Benefits Of Positive Dog Training

Recommended Answer:
You gradually take the treat away, however not completely. Think about it like a slot machine. People will sit there for hours and pour the quaters in hoping for that one win, they will keep trying because we are "trained" to know that it is possible that the next time we drop in the money, we could win.

So in the beginning, give the dog a treat every time they preform the command. Once they have it down SLOWLY start taking the treats away, once every other time, then even more distance. The trainer I've been using has said once every 5 times is a good place to be. It has worked wonderfully with my pup. Good luck!

Dog Training Tips

  • yes you can. i for example, had a dog that wasn't interested in treats, and only worked for my affection. but that isn't most dogs.

dogs live to please a pack leader. the treats are just a bonus. if you are coupling treats with another positive reward like a verbal or loving touch then when you take the treat away, he will still associate doing the command with a good feeling. if he knows he is pleasing you and you are otherwise doing everything to make yourself a respectable leader, you shouldn't have any issues when you remove the treat

  • No they won't miss the treat because you replace the treat with praise and affection.

You don't cut off the treats cold turkey - it's gradual - combine the treats and praise together, start giving fewer and fewer treats, and slowly increase your use of affection and praise.

I almost never use treats, I always use "GOOD!" or "YES!"

  • the idea is to gradually take the treats away so they only get treats every once in a while. this way the dog will still do the behavior because they think 'this might be the time i get a treat!' so they keep doing the behavior in hopes this time will be a treat. i use positive training on my dog and it works wonders! dont let ne one give u crap for it either. trust me some will. :)

  • It's best to use treats as a random form of positive reinforcement.

I learned this while in college in my experimental psychology class. We had rats, and the goal behavior was to get the rat to press a level as often as we could. We found rats that were randomly dispensed with a food pellet as reinforcement would press the lever more often than those that were given the food pellet every time.

Reinforcement in behavioral psychology is really a fascinating subject. Amazingly, it works just as well on people as it does on animals!

With my dog, I used treats randomly on a behavior he was still learning. I was consistant in praising and affection with every occurance of a desired behavior. After a few tries where he had the command down pat, I simply eliminated the treats altogether in training, until the next time I was teaching him something new.

  • It often depends on the dog.

A friend of mine with a Australian Shepherd took some private training lessons with me & my German Shepherd. Her Aussie responded VERY well to affection as a reward and also treats. But, at first, my GSD would almost ONLY respond to the treats. I think the tummy may speak louder than the heart, though, in almost any situation with any dog... at least slightly. ;)

The deal with the treat is to use it as a quick way for the dog to learn this is good & beneficial behavior. It helps them to make that association pretty quickly. You wouldn't stop giving treats as a reward cold-turkey. You would just require the dog to do the trick/behavior for a little longer before rewarding with the treat. And then, eventually, phasing the treat out.

For instance, one thing I wanted to teach our dog was to come inside from the front yard right away when I called. I did this at first by having the juiciest bloodiest piece of beef liver ready for him in my fridge. Then I'd call him & run inside straight to the fridge (by this time he was chasing after me maybe thinking it was a game or something) and giving him a piece of that liver. (Of course I was praising him as well.)

I did this several times this way. Then, eventually, I would only reward him with a treat every other time. And now, I don't usually reward him with a treat at all. I'll still praise him, though. And every once in a while just to be nice & to remind him that coming in right away really is a good thing, I'll still reward him with a big juicy treat. But I probably only do that once every 3 weeks or a month.

So, I don't think you ever stop using treats COMPLETELY. I do it now b/c I WANT to. But in the beginning, I did it b/c I HAD to in order to "jump start" my dog into doing what it was I wanted him to do.

  • My dog would rather have affection. He is Canine Good Citizen and Therapy Dogs International certified, and he got through all of his training and certifications WITHOUT treats. Sometimes dogs are smart enough to know when they will and won't get a treat. I also know, through psychology, that unless you teach using the treat occasionally, but not all the time, the dog will just associate the trick with the treat. Once the treat is no longer used, they will reject doing the trick. If you give treats sporadically (not everytime they do the trick), they have a higher success rate of repeating the trick once treats are removed.

You can use affection alone, but otherwise I recommend the sporadic treat method that I explained. I can give you more details if needed as well.

Dog Health Questions: Dog Training Question- Is this abnormal at this age?

I have a 13 week old puppy. He already mastered:
Sit
Stay
Paw
Down
and roll over.
Is this abnormal at this age?
He's the first dog I've ever had.
And I was at the vet and people were asking me where he was trained and looked at me weird when I replied I did?

Dog Training Books - Choosing the Best Dog Training Book

Recommended Answer:
I don't think so. My dog could do that at about that age and we didn't get professional help until she was a little older. Obviously some dogs pick things up more quickly than others but I don't think that's abnormally fast.

The people at the vet are probably surprised that your dog can do all those things in such a distracting environment as the vet's office. Most dogs are so interested in the various sights/sounds/smells at the vet's that showing off their obedience skills isn't really something they're interested in doing.

Dog Training Fundamentals

  • No, sounds perfectly normal to me. There are a few old school dog trainers that think puppies shouldn't be trained until they are 6 months old, which is of course nonsense, but maybe you met some of those? Just don't overload that little brain of his and make sure that training is always fun for him and you'll be fine.

Since this is your first puppy, I would suggest that you focus more on recall, "no-exercises" and "focus-exercises" than trick training at this stage, though. The earlier you can train the recall and make it an instinctive reaction, the better. "no-exercises" (trained with treats) will teach your puppy self-control and of course the meaning of the word "no", "focus-exercises" are, in my opinion, one of the basics of dog training because it teaches your dog to focus on you even with distractions and this will be a help when training other things or just interacting in general.

  • It's not what I would call "abnormal" because it is very good, and it's a sign of an intelligent owner who cares enough to work with the dog and teach it things. Sadly, it IS unusual. Most owners do nothing with their dogs but throw them away in the backyard. Puppy training classes are trying hard to change that. Although puppy classes don't usually begin before a pup is 12 weeks old, people are encouraged to get the puppy training DVD and start the pup at home from the first day it arrives. Clicker trainers teach their pups lots of things long before most dog training classes would even allow their puppies in the door. Whatever you are doing, BRAVO! And keep up the good work. Everyone needs to see a Good Example.

  • It definately depends on the type of puppy and his personality. Puppies from the herding breeds for example are easy to train and want to please their masters, so as long as you are consistent they respond very quickly. That's not to say that any puppy will not respond quickly to consistent training techniques, but that some are more adept than others. As long as you communicate exactly what you'd like, its not odd at all for your dog to know what you're talking about. : )

  • This is not abnormal at all it is good that you are training your pup keep it up make the sessions short and fun and that training list will get bigger and bigger.

There are tons of trick you can teach and different ways to train learn free shaping and operant conditioning and reinforce good behaviour and your dog will be able to learn anything.

  • If your able to train him at this level then it's not abnormal at all you should be happy that you have such a damn smart dog!! :D Because once he/she gets older it will be easy to train he/she if he/she starts doing something bad i.e. Chewing Shoes, Jumping on People, Jumping on Furniture, Invading Your Space etc etc. So yeah just be glad that you can say that I trained him myself!

  • I wouldn't say it is abnormal but yes it is a little strange! Seriously though do not worry about it, you are soo lucky, you have a really intelligent dog! You must also be really good with animals!

They were probably just looking at you weirdly because they might have thought you were lying about training such an amazing dog yourself. I don't really know though!

    luv rachxxx

  • (askername) It looks like you might need some help or guide to get some tips or tricks to help get your dog fully trained. My friends sister needed help with her dog. She got this course( dog training academy?) on how to train her dog,she followed the course and in a few weeks she had a fully trained pet.

  • It's not abnormal; it's terrific. Keep up the great work. When he's about 5 months old he's going to forget everything; don't get discouraged. It's just a phase. Keep working with him as you have, and he'll get through the phase and remember everything.

I suggest you register him with the AKC's PAL/ILP program and compete in obedience and rally. You'll have a blast, and he'll start collecting ribbons and awards for you to brag about.

    http://www.akc.org/reg/ilpex.cfm

  • I bet he hasnt fully mastered the stay command. You obviously have one of the more intelligent breeds which tend to have a greater learning capacity. You can teach a GSD puppy a trick in less then 5 attempts.

  • ive been threw 2 dogs as pups and they would learn there tricks in about 30 min...teach them 2 a day...they do get confused between dead and roll over..so if you do teach them dead i would do something with a hand movement.

  • Their just amazed the earlier the better keep up the training. Then start teaching harder commands and hand commands also

  • Yes, this is abnormal. I've never heard of a puppy so young learning all these tricks. I'm sure people will look at you weird. lol

Training Your Dog - Dog Training Tips and Advice

    Recommended Answer:
That you have to ask proves that you are not yet a candidate.

The first step is to actually TRAIN a dog - of any breed - to a competitive level. Doesn't matter whether the competition is Agility or Companion Trials or Obedience Tests or Tracking - each has its peculiarities, but what they do is demonstrate whether you have the patience & consistency required, plus the observational ability required to interpret a dog's behaviour and know when to teach, when to command, when to distract.

For DogSport itself, the first step is obtain a calm, intelligent-trainable, agile pooch - weakness of character will eliminate it from the "courage" section, weakness of body will eliminate it form the physical section, weakness of intelligence/trainability will eliminate it from just about everything in the 3 sections. Basically, unless both its parents have Breed Survey Classification (BS.Cl.1 or 2 in English, KKl.I or II in German), a litter's chances of producing correct GSDs with HGH and SchutzHund potential are small.
The second step is to join a DogSport club and obtain BH (BegleiterHund) with your pet - see http://www.worldclassgsd.com/Schutzhund/…

Only after that - and after your dog's body has matured enough (usually 15-18 months old) will you be allowed to start on the advanced mental & physical activities - see http://germanshepherddog.com/schutzhund/… - but there are many confidence-building and reliability-improving activities that can be used before that.

Now wash your filthy mouth out with battery acid! As if there could POSSIBLY be a better dog than a GSD!
However, the GSD is not intended to be the best at much - being "The Best" requires exaggeration of particular shapes & qualities that suit that ONE thing. You don't expect to see a tennis champion being also a boxing champion and a weightlifting champion and a pole-vault champion. The GSD is intended to be a specialist at the boundary patrolling method of sheep tending, and one of the 3 or 4 best at just about everything else. Its only rival is the Belgian Shepherd Dog - not surprising, seeing as both breeds were developed at the same time (1891-1911) to perform the same tasks on opposite sides of the River Maas! Sadly, show-is-all and pet-is-all breeders have been focussing on ruining the GSD for much longer than they have been trying to ruin the BSD - especially in Britain, Canada, the USofA. But in both breeds you will find excellence and you will find unworthy crap.

To ask your GSD questions, join some of the 400+ YahooGroups dedicated to various aspects of living with GSDs. Each group's Home page tells you which aspects they like to discuss, and how active they are. Unlike YA, they are set up so that you can have an ongoing discussion with follow-up questions for clarification. Most allow you to include photos.

    Overview of Dog Training

    • It's schutzhund.

And unless you can get work scooping poop at a working shepherd kennel, I doubt you'd ever get close to any dog of that caliber.

But I don't mean to dampen your spirits - I'll star for Greekman, Curtis, Dutchman and others who have working dogs - maybe they have more info for you.

Also, most often malinois are used, in addition to other belgian shepherds - they are often better bred than today's German shepherd, at least American-bred German shepherds.

      Hope this is helpful!

    • I know eight year olds with trained Schutzhund dogs. It takes hundreds of hours and dollars to train a dog to such a high level. If you're dedicated then you CAN do it.

If you're really interested then look up some local Schutzhund clubs and ask if you can go out and watch - they should say yes, but don't get discouraged if a few are rude to you. Keep calling around until you meet someone nice and friendly who is willing to

    • This is why I am going in to Law Enforcement to work with working dogs..... My puppy is from working dog line her parents are from Germany.
A well bred GSD will run you 700 to 1k+
A trained police k9 will run you 5K+
