Dog Training Tips - Rules for Dog Trainers and Dog Owners

Recommended Answer:
It is illegal for them to not allow the dog in. You do need papers, but the papers do not necessarily have to say WHY you have your dog. It is actually ILLEGAL for them to ask you why you have the dog. It is none of their business!

I'm pretty shocked that you don't know of this information already! You should really consider speaking with the people who trained your dog.

Give your dog a pat on the head for me! I love a good working dog! :D

A Few Dog Training Success Tips You Need to Know

  • Honestly, I'm not sure about the "needing papers" part, but it's definitely illegal for a store to refuse a registered service dog. I would recommend you contact the organization that your dog is registered through, and ask them if there is anything you need and what the policy is when that happens!Good luck!

  • I would talk to the organization that provided the service dog. I feel sure they would know all the ins and outs of the applicable laws. It's my opinion that they should allow the dog in the store, but then, I'm not a lawyer nor do I know that law.

  • No, they are *not* allowed to do this! The only thing that the store is allowed to do, is to ask you *if* the dog is a service dog used to assist with a disability. They can *NOT* ask you to show proof of said disability, and they can not ask you or the dog to leave the premises. That is illegal.

Here is the website for ADA. You should be able to find more information here, and how to go about reporting this particular store:
    http://www.ada.gov/

I'm really sorry that this happened... it isn't right.

  • It is most certainly illegal for them not to let your dog in, especially if he's wearing a service vest. It shouldn't be necessary for you to carry papers around with you, too.

There was a case in Floria last year where a blind man wasn't all lowed in a little convenience store with his guide dog. The guy sued and won. Find a lawyer quick. You can definitely sue them.

Aside from that, I worked for lawyers my whole life so I know something about the law and service dogs.

  • 1. You must have a medically certifiable disablity that a doctor has said a service dog would be of use in assisting you.

    2. Read this. http://www.ada.gov/qasrvc.htm

Short answer- No, you don't need papers. If you are disabled and require the use of a Service Dog and are excluded from entering a public place ask to speak with a manager. Have a printed copy of the ADA guidelines with you... ask the manager to call the police to escort you off the premises... then tell them you will be contacting the ACLU for legal assistance to sue them.

    Positive- The business learns something
More Positive- You will be awarded $$.
Negative- If you don't have a disability you get a jail sentence.

  • It is illegal to ask you for more info except that you are disabled and the dog is a service dog. Costco is notorios for refusing. A company can only refuse if they can prove the dog is a hazard to their company or their ability to do business. Companies often have trouble knowing how to comply with regulations. Contact Better Business Borough of your city or look up Disability laws/service animals. The reason some people have difficulty with getting their dogs in is because some companies have been tricked before....people saying their pet is service dogs or the person has little control over the animal (even service dogs can be removed if it is bothering people....barking, etc). Remember, keep your cool when dealing with companies. You are out there representing other disabled. What you do today with your service animal carries into the future for other people.

  • Nope you don't need papers, and it is not legal for them to deny you entry with your dog. You are not required to provide proof of anything, and it is not legal for them to even ask you why you need the dog.

It would be in your best interest to get a copy of the disabilities law stating the rules on service dogs and know it yourself. Also, you could help to educate people on the subject by caring a copy with you and providing it to anyone who does question you. Many people just don't know the rules, and if you were to teach them they may be more understanding.

To be honest, I'm wondering why you were not provided a copy of the federal law when you got your dog. (I guess that depends how you actually got the dog, though)

  • I have worked in retail and we were told to not even ask if the dog was a service dog just assume it is. They were very afraid of a lawsuit. Costco has a lot of nerve and obviously money to lose too.

  • As long as your dog had the I.D. vest on, they should not refuse entry. They are not allowed to refuse entry to a service dog in training. I train dogs with a couple ladies who do the training for Therapetic Dogs of Oklahoma.
They take the trainees out and about with them. They wear the I.D. vest and go to restaurants and stores.

  • You can print out the information from the government website and show it to them. It is a violation on federal law to deny access to a service dog in the United States. You do not have to give them any info about your medical condition and it's none of their business. There is also an 800 number that you or they can call for more info.

Try to be nice at first. If that doesn't work, demand to see a manager and ask if they'd like to be on the TV News for discrimination and have your lawyer call them.

Of course, if your dog is a disruption (eg barking in a movie theater) or a threat (eg growling at other customers), they can require you to leave the premises. But a well-trained service animal should never be doing that.
