Dog Health Questions: Vaccinations for a puppy training class?

Hey folks I have a four month old apricot pug and I've decided to take an 8 week puppy education class at PetsMart on April 7. The class asks for four vaccinations which include Rabies, Parvovirus, Distemper and Parainfluenza. My pup has the first three vaccinations but she doesn't have the Parainfluenza. My vetinerian didn't even mention to me that I need to have the Parainfluenza and I asked the lady over the phone at PetsMart if I need to have it and she said yes because dogs can spread viruses pretty quickly. I feel like my pug has gone through enough vaccinations.

My pug is recovering from spaying surgery on Monday and I don't know if I'm doing this too soon, but its an absolute must I go through this class.

I just want to hear from you guys if this is pretty common for any puppy/dog training classes to have so many vaccinations. It's hard to keep up.

Okay so i have a golden retriever thats 4 months old now, and hes soo wild. He jumps on me and bites me everything. We're going to send him to a PETCO Dog training and obedience school next week and we're praying for it to work. Please help me if you have suggestions.

Biting and jumping is normal puppy behavior. Puppies will put absolutely everything into their mouths because they are curious and want to learn about new objects. Retrievers especially will like using their mouths. Dogs also play with each other through play-biting. However, you are absolutely right about teaching your puppy to stop biting on humans.

Here are some things that may help:

1. When your dog has his mouth on you, it is important NOT to jerk away. Jerking away will cause you to get scratched. More importantly, sudden and quick movements may make your dog think it is a fun game and reinforce his biting/mouthing behavior. At worst, quick movements may instigate your dog's prey drive and cause her to get aggressive. Instead, stay still and either give a No command or yelp as a puppy might do to his litter-mates when they are playing too rough. I use the yelp for puppies who are still learning and for accidental biting.

2. Yelping will startle your dog and cause him to release his mouth. Quickly follow that up by redirecting him onto a toy. You don't need to shove it in, just put it there for him to bite on.

3. Time-out. If your dog continues with his bad behavior after you have told him to stop, then say "time-out" and remove him to a time-out area (a safe but boring room, e.g. laundry room). Leave him in there for a couple of minutes and let him out. If he starts up again, non-mark him (ack, ack), and say time-out and put him back in time-out. This time lengthen the duration to about 10-15 minutes. Note that if your dog stops the bad behavior, make sure to praise him a lot and give him good treats. Keep this up and your dog will learn that certain behaviors get him rewards while others get him into a boring room with nothing to do.

4. Hand-feed him
You can try and teach him some bite inhibition. Hand-feed him some kibble one by one. If he bites too hard while trying to get at his food, yelp in a high pitch, and ignore him for a few seconds. Then start feeding him again. This way he learns that biting hard can hurt humans and when he does that, the food and attention stops. Hand-feeding is also good for bonding and establishing your leadership.

5. NILIF program. A great way to establish yourself as leader is through the control of resources. Don't give anything to your dog (including pets and affection) unless he does something for you first. For example ask him for a "sit" before you give him food, toys, or freedom.

6. Obedience training. It is great that you already have him enrolled in a puppy class. Try and do several obedience training sessions (10-15 minutes) every day. This will help establish you as a leader, improve your bond with your dog, exercise your dog's mind, and give you good tools that you can use to help control him in the house.

7. Make him work for his food.
A great way to exercise your dog mentally is through the use of interactive food toys. Some good ones include the Buster Cube, Premier Busy Buddy Collection, and of course Kongs. Frozen Kongs are great for when you have to leave your dog home alone. Just put some wet food into a classic Kong and freeze it. You dog will have fun licking and chewing at it for a long time.

• Take him for a lot of walks, get him to chase a ball or toy until he's very tired. When he jumps on you push him down with the top of your leg and say ench!! When he bites pinch his lip against his teeth and if he yelps that's OK. Again tell him ench!! Never let the bad behavior be OK. • I know where you're coming from. I have a puppy that used to be just like yours.
  
  About the biting and jumping up: well, he's a puppy. That's what puppies do, unfortunately. You have to firmly and calmly teach him that he is not suposed to do that. For the biting: if he's biting/chewing on something, quickly distract him with something that he's allowd to chew on, then praise him to let him know he's doing the right thing. Also, try bitter apple spray: that worked with our puppy quite well. If he's biting you, find a trainer that you trust and ask him/her for advice. Same thing for the jumping.
  
  And also remember to exercise your pup: I've been finding that a TIRED puppy is a GOOD puppy.

What did you expect ~ you should be exercising this dog for one to two hours a day, run with him, bike with him, throw a ball for him...get him tired and the biting and chewing will stop. The main pressures of training work would have to be the people involved (the one that don't want to listen, think they don't have to, etc) and the dogs - it isn't easy, it isn't going to be quick. It takes time, patience, and dedication. Not to mention lots of mentoring under other trainers to learn the most you can about ALL forms of training techniques.

As for pet shop, i would NEVER work in one unless it did not sell dogs. Period. Working at one that sells dogs means you would have to LIE to people about where they came from and their health, and you would be supporting puppy mills by selling their stock. Wouldn't be able to live with myself if i did that. Pet stores that don't sell animals, well, a bit less stressful but you STILL have to deal with people and all other things that come with retail work.

Okay, so i have a female boxer who is about one year old . We are trying to house-break her, and at first it was going good. We got a bird bell and she jumped up on the door and rang it every time she had to go outside... And since she was doing good we started to give her treats when she went to the bathroom outside, But now i think she is confused.. Forget about food treats, forget about the bell...take her out as you would do a pup after eating, after waking and after playing and sometimes in between, stand silently with her until she is going to the toilet, then as she is doing it put a word or words to it, I use 'be clean'..then good girl do this EVER time, no chatting telling her to go, nothing except the word/s you choose to say when she is doing it...she will then associate the command with the action....restrict her space in the house unless you can supervise her and NEVER tell her off if you find something, ONLY if you catch her in the act, a quick 'no' then silently take her out and wait....if she is unsupervised and finding some dificulty in understanding what you have been teaching then that is not her fault...clean up with her not around and FORGET it, no telling her" I have just cleaned up again after you" or anything else as it will make her anxious and that will make it worse....onceyou have been training this consistantly for a week, open the door and tell her ' be clean'...now you have a dog who will toilet on cmmand.....then re-introduce the bell, so you ring bell, open door and 'be clean'....keep it simple, keep calm and as little commands as possible.

That doesn't mean you can't get compliance from a Jack Russell, but you do need to work for it.

The reason some people have difficulty with getting their dogs in is because some companies have been tricked before....people saying their pet is service dogs or the person has little control over the animal (even service dogs can be removed if it is bothering people....barking, etc). Remember, keep your cool when dealing with companies. You are out there representing other disabled. What you do today with your service animal carries into the future for other people.

• As long as your dog had the I.D. vest on, they should not refuse entry. They are not allowed to refuse entry to a service dog in training. I train dogs with a couple ladies who do the training for Therapetic Dogs of Oklahoma.
  They take the trainees out and about with them. They wear the I.D. vest and go to restaurants and stores.


• You can print out the information from the government website and show it to them. It is a violation on federal law to deny access to a service dog in the United States. You do not have to give them any info about your medical condition and it's none of their business. There is also an 800 number that you or they can call for more info.
  
  Try to be nice at first. If that doesn't work, demand to see a manager and ask if they'd like to be on the TV News for discrimination and have your lawyer call them.
  
  Of course, if your dog is a disruption (eg barking in a movie theater) or a threat (eg growling at other customers), they can require you to leave the premises. But a well-trained service animal should never be doing that.

I need some help with training my dog
hes a mixed breed...and not too old...about 4 or 5 months well ive taught him how to sit (yay me! :D)

• Well what you can do about the jumping is when ever he gets ready to jump on you just lift your knee and gently place it in his chest but hard enough to make him back off keep doing that until he stops jumping it may take a little bit but it does work.
  About the biting you cant just give him a bone and expect him to quit biting. When he does bite you then pop him on the nose but not to hard just hard enough to stun him a little bit it may take a little bit but it still works.
  Now with the agility all you have to do is get basic training down first then you can go to agility. But to help you out with doing agility all you have to do is when you get ready to do the high jump you need a leash on him and put him on one side of the jump and you on the other side with the leash over the jump, use his favorite food like hot dogs as bait and when you get ready for him to jump say over give the leash a gentle tug and have him try to jump it. All of it may take a little bit but as he gets older it will stick with him and you both. For the pole weaving have him on leash use bait and walk him through it and he will learn what you want him to do. • Go to www.akc.org or www.ukcdogs.com Look in their club listings. You should be able to find a local obedience club. Their class fees are generally less than Petsmart/Petco and they train in a full sized ring, not a small enclosed area.

I just got a new puppy but he is not potty trained and insists on going on the carpet. I cannot get a doggy door because I also have a cat. I am out about 8 hours a day. How can I at least get him to go on the wood floor or better yet wait until someone gets home.

Get your puppy on a feeding/drinking schedule and remember that your puppy will need to potty after eating, drinking, playing, chewing and waking up. He will usually need to go 10-30 minutes after eating & drinking. Do you have a trusted family member or friend that could stop by and let him out during the day? Also, are you using a crate? If not, I highly recommend crate training your puppy. Buy a crate just large enough for him to stand up, turn around and lie down comfy. Dogs usually will not go where they eat and sleep. It will take time, just be patient and don't punish your puppy for potty mistakes-he will learn to "hide" them!

• dont chase him! use a really long retractable leash and 'let him go' but just lenghthen the leash length. then when he starts running turn your back and ignore him. when you chase him he thinks youre playing with him. good luckk! :D


• You have to start training him to come when he's on a leash! Once he can do that, then get him to come in a large room in your house off the leash, then, in a fenced-in yard off the leash. it has to be done in small baby steps and it will take a while.
  
  Of course, you should never have your animal running loose; cars will hit it, it could eat something, someone could shoot it, and your state probably has a leash law.

• i don't know if your dog has had any obedience training but form your answer it sounds rather like a no (sorry if i'm wrong). So i assume he has not - you need to spend a lot of time teaching him who is the leader and training him to perform basic obedience commands.
  To have a dog come to you - if you chase or move towards your dog, he will never come to you and he will see it as a game that you are tring to catch him. Have a yummy treat in your hand (like cooked chicken pieces) and let him know what you have. Once he is coming towards you to get his treat, say Come! and when he reaches you without running away, reward him. You can do this on a leash first, but dont use the command many times in a row as your dog will learn that he doesnt have to obey you the first time you say it.
  Another tip is to tie ur dog on the leash, tie your leash to your waist and don't say anything to the dog, just walk anywhere like you normally would, and when the dog starts pulling the other direction, walk the opposite way so he has to learn to follow you. Do this for about 2 weeks as many times per day as you can, the longer the better, and after some time your dog will learn to follow you without the leash too.
  EDIT - are you taking your dog on daily long walks? or is he just in the garden the whole time? dogs need exercise, some more than others and when they have too much energy, you can't train them as they will not listen, so make sure you drain off some of his energy by a longer walk or a game and you can train him after he has calmed down.


• first do not chase after them. they will only think your playing with them bad experience with my uncles dog who got lose took 30 minutes to get him back inside the house.
  
  What i do is i show my puppy her favorite treat and say "come".
  -she comes and gets her treats do this until she learns what 'comes' means
  -try praising her or giving her treats mix it up.
  
  do not say 'come' and when she does 'comes' punish her otherwise she will not come to you.
  
  its better if they think 'come' means happy not getting punish.
  
  and if they do not come don't keep repeating 'come' because they will eventually think come means ignore you!!! and start to ignore you.


• You can take him to a petsmart and they will take great care of him ... my dog is very obidient but can still horse around when its time.. she loves going back cuz the ppl are nice and rub her and evrything.... its the treats tht the dogs love and they have thousands.. plus if they finish early they excersize them
