Dog Health Questions: Dog training TV Shows that have Victoria S and Ceasar, why do people see them as some sort of training bible?

Friday afternoon rant!
This might just be my opinion, but those are TV shows. They are cut and edited and the family that they end up showing is probably chosen from amongst 1000 other families with problem dogs. Its all nice and sweet how they fix a major problem in 30 minutes, but c'mon now!

I'm irritated when someone posts a dog behavior question and he/she is referred to a TV show that will magically solve all their problems.

Opinions?

House Dog Training Secrets and Dog Food Secrets Revealed

Recommended Answer:
Pure laziness - people see it as a "quick fix" - they dont realise that they need to put the effort and training in themselves. Its a whole lot easier, and more enjoyable, to sit and watch a TV programme instead. Hey I just thought, if you can get your dog to watch it with you - problem solved!!

I hate seeing questions "Where do I write to Cesar to get him to come and see my dog?" - why not look for a trainer ALREADY in your area? But suggest that and you get "but he's the best, I want him". Im sorry, I thought you wanted your dog problems fixed, not a spot on TV?!!

8 Ways to Improve Your Dog Training

  • The only thing I will say in favor of Cesar Milan is that he always says, he TRAINS people. Now, that is an accurate statement. As you said, much of what he does is basic dog training and obedience. The owners of many of these problem dogs are CLUELESS! Like the dog that continually barks until the owner picks it up - and the owner hasn't a clue why the dog continues to bark!

Not all, but most of the behavior problems on these shows can be eliminated with some very basic obedience commands. Problem is, the owners haven't done their homework. They sit there and watch the pets misbehave, all the while wringing their hands saying, "Oh what can I do."

But Cesar and Victoria are making a VERY comfortable living so I guess they're doing something right.

  • As far as CM is concerned I think a lot are looking for a quick fix and its easier to watch the chump on tv than pick up a great book by Ian Dunbar for instance.

CM and VS base their training on old fashioned dominance theories that even those who first wrote them now admit they were flawed anyway, they were based on captive wolves, so neither dogs nor how animals behave in the wild!

    http://www.4pawsu.com/dogpsychology.htm

they simple work by making a dog completely shut down until it is so fearful it wont show any behaviour at all.

Oh and I know I'll get thumbs down but please do read the link.

  • Yes, I totally agree. Just like with EVERY other reality tv show, it's all been edited, so it's very hard to form a real opinion on the training methods. I don't mind some of the techniques that Victoria and Caesar use, but I would never base all of my dogs' training off of one person. I adapt to what works for each of my dogs.

  • Amen!

Well, we all have one of Paris Hilton's dogs, so why not have Paris Hilton's dog trainers? This country is getting way too lazy for words, and rather gullible as well.

And don't even get me started on reality shows. I have seen nothing more stupid in all my life.

  • I think that for general obedience, they do help the average dog owner. Like sit, place, etc.

The issue is that people believe that they can use the same techniques for aggression - and that is dangerous.

  • People also believe that the contestants on American Idol are the best singers in the world.

There's nothing new under the sun here.

At least those programs show people that there are alternatives to letting their pets continue to misbehave.

  • Good one! They do it because they are too lazy to get off the couch. I refer to them as "keyboard vets" they have been licensed by Directv and Microsoft.

  • I don't like victoria but i like Caesar.... I just like him more, yes it is a reality show but a lot of the tips do actually help!

  • Because whatever they do or say does work.

  • Im bored with it now.......... the shows and the arguments over them.

  • Go to SCHOOL and find out, that's where i am

  • because the show gives people tips on how to control your dog

  • Victoria's show isn't REALLY meant to be taken seriously.....is it? I thought it was a skit from Saturday Night Live.

  • I don't know anything about V.S, I don't watch her show. I do watch the Dog Whisperer. I was lucky to grow up on a farm and even luckier that our family passed on to us children their knowledge of animals. Our parents put animals first and their care and behavior issues. There are many kids who were raised with pets, but the mother or father did all the care for the pet and didn't pass on the knowledge to the children. There are some people who never had a pet and don't realize all the drama that goes with caring and training them. The benefit of a show like Dog Whisperer is that it shows people how to care and sometimes train their dog. Sometimes you can't just read a book, you need someone to show you how it is done. Just like some people can't read a cook book and cook, they need Martha Stewart to show them what an egg wash is. I don't agree with everything the Dog Whisperer does, and I think in some cases, he is the only one that can do what he does, but the overall benefit for the general public is still great. I have certainly learned some things watching his show, but mostly I hear him echo things my mother told me as a child. I wish he would do a show on how to train your nasty neighbors dog. ha ha

  • I can see the appeal for an owner with a bratty untrained dog to thrown up their hands & wait for Victoria or Ceasar to magically turn their spoiled untrained monster into an angel that behaves in a socially acceptable manner.

    Not gonna happen!

An experienced dog trainer can work with the owner & explain what needs to be done to control/correct the behavior but if the owners do not invest the time on a day in day out basis to train the dog, nothing will magically happen.

  • I don't even know who this Victoria S person is lol. Now I'm going to have to google her!
As far as Caesar goes - I don't hate him. I agree that a lot is editted out and there is no way you're going to fix a dog in 30 minutes. But as Painted Pony mentioned, I also like that he says he "trains people" as well. To me, that's where a lot of dog training blunders happen - because the people don't quite understand how to train their dog.
He's a good role model in the sense of being a "strong pack leader"...it gives you an example to help fix yourself!

Nothing is worse than that balding guy from that show "At the end of my Leash"...omg that guy is mentally challenged. He wanted to show what it would be like to try and stop a big dog when it's not listening so he tied himself with a leash to the back of a minivan and had the minivan drag him around - was there really a point to that? lol

Dog Health Questions: Training Help!?

How can I get respect as a dog trainer? I'm currently at college getting a bachelor's degree in Agricultural Business. After this I plan to go to a 12 weeks dog training academy in Houston, TX to learn about different types of training, get certified, etc. Then I plan to own and operate my own dog training facility. I know a lot about training, and I just have an uncanny natural connection with dogs, the problem is, I'm still young, and I don't know if people will take me seriously/trust me. How can I gain respect?

A Long Tradition of Dog Training

Recommended Answer:
you will gain respect not ny what you say but by what you do. Allow your work to prove to others that you are fully qualified. Let others be your mouthpiece. A satisfied customer is the greatest form of avertising there is..

How To Download A Book On Dog Training

  • try short training demonstrations at your local park and shopping centre

  • You may be young, but your bachelor's degree and dog training certificate will speak for itself.
    Have confidence in yourself!

  • By being polite dressing nice being respectful....Explaining that you have been certified and that you have uncanny natural connection with dogs....Also, have a lawyer draw up your contracts..Keep your facility clean be on time....Keep working hours, regular hours and just be professional....Learn how to set up a small business ...get software for small business

  • Makes friends with people who work at pet stores, and pet store owners, and other dog trainers.

Maybe visit dog parks and network.

    Build a list of references.

Go out in public with your well trained dogs, and practice training. Who knows, maybe someone will be impressed and ask you how you do it!

  • Have you thought about any type of competition? Schutzhund, agility, herding, AKC stuff?? Trophy's on your wall are alot more impressive than any school certificate. Rubbing shoulders with your "soon to be" peers is an excellent way to learn and gain respect at the same time.

I don't want to mess up your plan at all, but....in the last 30 years I've had over 50 applicants with "Master Trainer" certificates try to get work with me. Not ONE could train a dog. Oh sure, they could train a lab or golden....but they were NOT dog trainers. It's basically ALOT of money to learn a few methods. Your money would be better spent on kennels, leashes, collars, advertising....go to the library and go to seminars. Build 5 kennels, adopt a yorkie, shar pei, gsd, mastiff (type) and an afghan. When those 5 are off-leash, around ANY distraction, you will be alot closer to being a dog trainer than 10 years at school will make you. Next, branch into different types of training...herding, S&R, protection, etc. If you have "natural" ability, and train all day/every day/different breeds/all types of training, in 3-5 years, you'll be a good trainer and be well respected.

Dog Health Questions: My DOG IS WILD! HELP HELP HELP HELP HELPPPP?

Okay so i have a golden retriever thats 4 months old now, and hes soo wild. He jumps on me and bites me everything. We're going to send him to a PETCO Dog training and obedience school next week and we're praying for it to work. Please help me if you have suggestions.

Myths of Dog Training and Dog Training Solutions

Recommended Answer:
Biting and jumping is normal puppy behavior. Puppies will put absolutely everything into their mouths because they are curious and want to learn about new objects. Retrievers especially will like using their mouths. Dogs also play with each other through play-biting. However, you are absolutely right about teaching your puppy to stop biting on humans.

Here are some things that may help:

1. When your dog has his mouth on you, it is important NOT to jerk away. Jerking away will cause you to get scratched. More importantly, sudden and quick movements may make your dog think it is a fun game and reinforce his biting/mouthing behavior. At worst, quick movements may instigate your dog's prey drive and cause her to get aggressive. Instead, stay still and either give a No command or yelp as a puppy might do to his litter-mates when they are playing too rough. I use the yelp for puppies who are still learning and for accidental biting.

2. Yelping will startle your dog and cause him to release his mouth. Quickly follow that up by redirecting him onto a toy. You don't need to shove it in, just put it there for him to bite on.

3. Time-out. If your dog continues with his bad behavior after you have told him to stop, then say "time-out" and remove him to a time-out area (a safe but boring room, e.g. laundry room). Leave him in there for a couple of minutes and let him out. If he starts up again, non-mark him (ack, ack), and say time-out and put him back in time-out. This time lengthen the duration to about 10-15 minutes. Note that if your dog stops the bad behavior, make sure to praise him a lot and give him good treats. Keep this up and your dog will learn that certain behaviors get him rewards while others get him into a boring room with nothing to do.

4. Hand-feed him
You can try and teach him some bite inhibition. Hand-feed him some kibble one by one. If he bites too hard while trying to get at his food, yelp in a high pitch, and ignore him for a few seconds. Then start feeding him again. This way he learns that biting hard can hurt humans and when he does that, the food and attention stops. Hand-feeding is also good for bonding and establishing your leadership.

5. NILIF program. A great way to establish yourself as leader is through the control of resources. Don't give anything to your dog (including pets and affection) unless he does something for you first. For example ask him for a "sit" before you give him food, toys, or freedom.

6. Obedience training. It is great that you already have him enrolled in a puppy class. Try and do several obedience training sessions (10-15 minutes) every day. This will help establish you as a leader, improve your bond with your dog, exercise your dog's mind, and give you good tools that you can use to help control him in the house.

7. Make him work for his food.
A great way to exercise your dog mentally is through the use of interactive food toys. Some good ones include the Buster Cube, Premier Busy Buddy Collection, and of course Kongs. Frozen Kongs are great for when you have to leave your dog home alone. Just put some wet food into a classic Kong and freeze it. You dog will have fun licking and chewing at it for a long time.

Easy Dog Training - 7 Top Tips

  • Well your puppy is acting like a puppy, and one who has too little excersize and not enough manners. petco training is crap. Never send your dog away from training, YOU need to be the one giving commands and learning how to be a trainer. He needs puppy classes for socialization and basic manners. Then move him up to adult obediance classes. He bites because he is teething. Give him lots of toys and show him what is appropriate to chew on. He jumps because you let him!!! I bet its going to be even more fun when he is grown up.

What is it with people getting dogs and just expecting things to happen like magic, otherwise send them to someone else to do the work. They are a live creature full of natural instincts and drives and a mind of their own. They don't just naturally fit into our human society, you gotta take the time to work with them and show them how.

  • it's good idea, bringing your pup to obedience training will greatly help..
training is the best gift you can ever give your pup..

try this site for more information:

  • Take him for a lot of walks, get him to chase a ball or toy until he's very tired. When he jumps on you push him down with the top of your leg and say ench!! When he bites pinch his lip against his teeth and if he yelps that's OK. Again tell him ench!! Never let the bad behavior be OK. He has too much energy and you need to exhaust him.The obedience class will be great, show you how to train him.

  • contact cesar milan?

  • I took my siberian husky there and i got kicked out the 3rd day!!!! but my dog barked, growled, lounged at people then the last day i was there my dog got loose from me they told to take her off the leash and she jumped over the blue fence and ran around the store barking and growling at people and bite a yellow lab

  • I know where you're coming from. I have a puppy that used to be just like yours.

About the biting and jumping up: well, he's a puppy. That's what puppies do, unfortunately. You have to firmly and calmly teach him that he is not suposed to do that. For the biting: if he's biting/chewing on something, quickly distract him with something that he's allowd to chew on, then praise him to let him know he's doing the right thing. Also, try bitter apple spray: that worked with our puppy quite well. If he's biting you, find a trainer that you trust and ask him/her for advice. Same thing for the jumping.

And also remember to exercise your pup: I've been finding that a TIRED puppy is a GOOD puppy.

    Good luck!!

  • Your dog is not wild, it's a puppy! What did you expect ~ you should be exercising this dog for one to two hours a day, run with him, bike with him, throw a ball for him...get him tired and the biting and chewing will stop. The puppy class is great, good for him, but much more important for you ~ you need to learn what to expect from a young dog. Once the class is over, it's up to you. Like naughty children, it's not their fault, it's the parents same with dogs, so start reading and learning what you have for the next 15 years!

Dog Health Questions: Dog training tip? My dog "goes" in his cage?

Can anybody help me? I have a two year old Doberman that I still have to crate at night and when I am away. His crate is at the foot of my bed, but he still goes to the bathroom in his cage. The problem is that he doesn't whine to go out until he already has relieved himself. I wish I knew a way for him to tell me he "has" to go instead of after he already went.... any help at all would be great. I am at my wit's end!

Dog Obedience Schools - How to Get Free Dog Training by Learning What's Taught at Obedience Classes

    Recommended Answer:
First you must take out that cage, drench it with pure bleach and hose it off, even a little bit of smell from before will trigger his bowels, secondly get a mushy, comfy comforter and place it inside the cage, also add some toys, hopefully he will see it as his bed and will refuse to go on it, finally watch him like a hawk, even if it takes all night, the moment he gets ready to poop or pee yell loudly, clap your hands and say NO, NOT INSIDE over and over again, take him outside and when he does relieve himself praise him profuselya nd hug and kiss him, even offer a treat, a couple of times of this and he will finally get it, Inside=Bad=Yelling, outside=Good=Treats and love. Dogs are very smart, but they tend to get confused easily, also NEVER clean the mess while he watches you, he may do it over and over again because he wants to please you and may think you actually need him to soil the cage just so you can get to clean it, Also dogs MUST be caught in the act to be punished or they will not get the message, if you say BAD DOG 2 minutes after he has pooped he will have absolutely no idea why he is getting punished, they relate the action of the moment to teh result. Keep trying! Good luck!

    Dog Training Tools and Advice

    • Did you train him not to go in his crate when he was a puppy? Tell him "Bad dog!!!!!" And punish him however is right for the dog. If it gets to drastic measures, rub the blanket/whats in his crate in his nose. Only if its drastic. If he has no blanket in his crate, put one in, as he might not be comfortable, and make sure to put him outside fast after he goes in his crate! And when he does "go" outside, make sure to reward him with lots of praise. And make sure NOT to have toys in it,(pura_rosa is wrong) as he might not think of it as a bed, more as somewhere to play.

    • Well you can always hire a dog trainer if he doesnt stop at no cost, or your dog is just loneley when your away. it happens to lots of dogs who doant get to see their owners very much becuz they work alot or something, its just the excitement. and if you dont want to spend your money on a trainer, then just be patient and spend some quality time together for a week or so. then start teaching him that he shoudnt GO alot and prepare lots of treats so the dog knows that its doing the right thing, and that job, needs lots of patience.

    • get a cow bell and teach him to ring the bell to go out. Every time you take him outside have him ring the bell. He will eventually start to ring the bell to ask to go out.

With crate training the amount of room they get should just be big enough for them to lay down and turn around. Dogs naturally do not like to potty where they sleep. So keeping the crate small enough so he can not pee in one corner and sleep in the other will encourage him to hold it. At least that is the theory for puppies. Your dog is a little older. Make sure there is nothing physically (or emotionally) wrong with him.

    • my dog kept weeing in the house and i didn't know how to stop him because he couldn't have any way of telling us. So when i opened the back door i said ,Garden, and i said it for ages every day. And now a couple times a day i say garden and he goes to the back door. Also if you let him out before you go to bed he wont need it in the night HEARS A TIP: if you see your dog looking at the floor and circling a bit he needs to go to the toilet.

    • You have to either clean the cage out very well with bleach or get a new one entirely. Also make sure his crate isn't too big for him. Has he always been going in his crate at night or did this just start up? Dogs usually shouldn't have to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, especially if he's two years old. Make sure he does his business before you go to bed. I would also go see the vet just to be safe.

And Meg, you should NEVER rub a dog's nose in its urine. It's very ineffective and just plain not nice.

    • You need to spray the cage down to eliminate the smell for one, sold at Pet smart and Walmart. Also make sure you put him out prior to crating him, I usually let mine out for at least an hour before bed. Plenty of time to relieve and urine. Also, cut off water by a certain time, at least an hour before letting him out. Good luck

    • Even if he isn't whining put him out side. Frequently. See if you can find out if there is a certain time he goes in his crate and make that a time where you always let him out. problem solved.

    • Spend alot of time outside and give praise/treats when he goes outside. It worked for my dog but it took alot of leash time outside.

      Good luck.

      Oo

    • Maybe becoz he's crate smells and dogs tend to "go" in smelly places or where there's rugs/mats.

    • Your dog goes in his cages because you never walk him.

    • I'd whine too if I pooped in my cage... Poo stinks!

    • with animals-make sure u are consitent.
if you are not you will confuse them.

just rub his nose in and let him know he is in trouble/

Dog Health Questions: Dog training answer for u about potty training?

our dog trainer says use chicken liver as a treat when they potty outside with alot of praise. when u take him out and she does go praise her and give a treat to her if he goes inside don't give her anything. Use the kennel when u take her out of it take her out right away when she is done eating or drinking take her out and before u put her back into the kennel. Use the kennel to train when done playing with her take her out then when u bring her in put her in the kennel take her back out with in a half hour to see if she goes but use alot of praise and a treat when she does go outside. give also time for food to digest and for her to go outside before u put her in for the night cut off the water and food at a certain time

Common Tools Used In Dog Training Schools

    Recommended Answer:
And the question is what? Is that a good method? sure. Cutting off water isn't something I am willing to ever do but since I assume your dog doesn't have water in it's crate then whatever works. Positive reinforcement is always the best route to take.

    Considering a Dog Training Career

    • that sounds good, I do pretty much about the same with my bulldog pup, except for the potty treat, i just gave praise.

    • yes you can do all of that. i don't think that dogs should go in a kennel though. when it is a puppy i would cut watter and food at around 7:00. take it out after every meal and when it wakes up and before it goes to bed try to take it out every hour just in case it need to go. when you give a treat it is telling the dog that it did a good thing
