Dog Health Questions: If I am a new dog trainer how and how much should I charge?

I just moved to San Jose, CA for my 9-5 job, but I wanted to do some dog training on the weekends.

I don't have any official qualifications, but I'm quite good: I trained my friends dog to open the refrigerator, grab a beer and bring it to me. Simple tricks I can teach dogs in a few minutes.

I was going to advertise home training visits on craigslist, but I'm not associated with any business so I don't know where to start. I'm not looking to make a killing, but I would like some reasonable compensation for my time. So how much should I charge?

And then how should I charge? (By the trick? Per hour of my time? Any other ideas?) If I had my preference, I would like to teach exotic tricks instead of the basics. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks

Basic Dog Training - Starting Off on the Right Paw

Recommended Answer:
Dog trainers typically charge by the hour. I'd start very low since you don't have the credentials to pull in clients and need to start the ball rolling with word-of-mouth advertising. Another way to build a reputation and expand your experience is to volunteer with a shelter rehabbing dogs with minor behavior problems. Most dogs surrendered to shelters would have a much easier time being adopted if they had a little brush-up on their basic training.

Let your vet know you are a dog trainer. They often maintain a list of local trainers to share with clients who inquire. Do the same with your local pet stores. Make sure these are people who know you and know your dog(s) so they can feel confident recommending you (having seen the results of your work first hand).

Actually, putting obedience titles on dogs is about the best way I know to get the word out about your training skills. Then teaching beginning obedience classes. Then you get some requests for private training through that.

Dog Health Questions: Dog training question?

How can i train my dog to only have bowl movements on one side of the yard ?

The Benefits Of Positive Dog Training

    Recommended Answer:
dog trainer 30 plus yrs -
Take him out on a leash for 2 weeks. Only allow him that particular area to go in. Also if he goes somewhere else...put some rubber gloves on and collect it making an area of his poo. He will eventually go to "his" place. This is a really good question.

Dog Training Book - Why Buy One? When Everything is Free Online!

    • well there are a couple of ways. With my dog, we sat her on one side of the yard and wouldnt let her come back into the house until she went to the bathroom, and once she went we gave her a treat. After a month the dogs start to realize they get treats whenever they go on one side. Also, if you get your dog to pee on that certain side 2-3 times, it will automatically start going there for the majority of the time because their scent is familiar. :)

    • when he starts going towards the other side pick him up take him to the other side immediatly!

when u put him on that side pet him and reward him ecspecially if he goes 2 the bathroom!

when he goes 2 the bathroom on the other side pick him up and take him 2 the other side and give him attention.if he tries 2 go back 2 the other side block him & say "ah ah" loudly and quickly!

Dog Health Questions: How do I train my dog not to bark at strangers?

Hi, my name is Susy. I am 14 and I train dogs for agility and obedience. I understand them and why they do the things they do. The only exception is BARKING. I have a gorgeous Golden Retriever puppy who is about 8 months old. She is the sweetest little girl I have ever owned and I love her to death! She is very smart and obedient. I just don't understand why I can't recall her when she takes off to bark at people walking down my street. I call her and call her and people are starting to get very annoyed. I am thinking about building a fence around the property but my parents are reluctant about the cost of it.

I will most certainly NOT use a shock collar or an underground shocking fence. I consider this physical harm to try to train the dogs to do what you want them to. It's just like hitting a dog to get them to sit. It is VERY cruel. Victoria Stilwell said so herself that shock collars are disgusting and inhumane.
I DO NOT WANT YOUR INPUT ON MY OPINION OF SHOCK COLLARS AND UNDERGROUND COLLARS. KEEP IT TO YOURSELF. NOTHING WILL EVER CONVINCE ME TO SHOCK MY DOG INTO DOING SOMETHING I WANT HER TO!

I follow all of Victoria Stilwell's dog training advice. She is my idol. I don't want anyone to chastise my opinion on her training. If you do I will close the topic and re post. I will not put up wqith any chastism on my ideas.

Agaim, I absolutely will not put a shock collar on my dog. So don't even dare to suggest it please!

try simple tools like Bark Off!! they are cheap and they are effective from my experience..

    Career in Dog Training

    • Well I don't know if it would work in every case, but when my dog was a puppy I taught him "Look at me" Basically pointing at my face, making him stare at me for 5 seconds or so, then treating him. This has proved handy as a way to distract him from things. He used to have a thing about barking out the window at people and "look at me" worked. You could try going into the yard with her on a long leash , and having people walk by while you practice either recall, "quiet" or whichever command you use.

    • You seem to be a very opinionated young lady for 14! You train dogs for agility and obedience, really at 14? No one can change your mind or voice an opinion about their ideas, why did you ask the question then?

Since you wont like most of the answers on here, I suggest you struggle on with your barking dog and as you know SO much, you won't really need our help.

Only thing to say about prong or pinch collars and shock collars, if you havent' found a dog that needs it, you haven't been around many dogs yet.

One thing to learn with dogs, some people have ideas that you may not have thought of, open up and try some new ideas, Victoria is great (I am English too) but there are always other options.

Tried a spray bottle with water in it? Works wonders...

    • Well...I would normally suggest a shock collar LOL but since you don't agree with it we'll move on.

What I would suggest is getting some friends together and have them walk past your house. Have them start at a distance that your dog can see them but doesn't bark. When this happens, reward your dog. Then have them come closer, try it in 5 step intervals and reward each time the dog doesn't bark. If as the person gets closer the dog starts barking give a verbal correction, withhold the reward and break the dogs attention on the person, have the person move back to the previous spot where the dog was not barking and begin again. Repeat until you get the desired response and vary the reward schedule. Then remove yourself from the scenerio to a spot where you cant be seen and start the trials over, try a bird launcher or something like that to reward the dog so you wont be seen. Then slowly remove that. It will take some time.

Dog Health Questions: Should she even be allowed to have a training class?

So basically, there's this old woman who does a dog training class at the local centre...

When i first got my Pups i went there, to try it out and what i witnessed really put me off.

Her method of training a PUPPY to lie down was to stand on the dogs leash close to the collar so the puppys neck would be forced down and they would have no choice but to lie down.

My Pug was only little when we went there, one time he was playbowing at another dog there and the trainer came over and clapped her hands, yelled at my 5 month old puppy and told him to "STOP IT IF YOU KEEP DOING THAT YOULL BE A NASTY DOG"

I just looked at her in disbelief.

Another time someone was there with their labrador x poodle. The trainer was handling that persons dog to demonstrate something. The labrador X barked so the trainer yanked the leash and smacked said dog on the backside. The owner of that dog never came back again. Infact everyone we knew there has left since. Except this 'trainer' still uses treats... Nobody has said anything about her classes, but fellow dog owners i have spoken to say she is pretty harsh but then nothing else is said of it.. Everyone i know or where i live has been taking their dogs there and it's awful that she's teaching these new dog owners that that is how you handle/train a young dog...

I've gone to a different class since and never returned to hers.

What do you think? Should she even be able to have dog training classes?

Dog Training School to Help Solve Dog Behavioral Problems

    Recommended Answer:
Wow... this broad is using the very outdated "Barbara Windsor" technique!

This way of training a puppy has been proved to be cruel, harsh and bad in later life for the dogs attitude to owner and other family members.

The more recent techniques of reward based training is a far better method of training a successful socialized and balanced dog.

Although, technically this trainer is using outdated methods, the only way to make your point is to report and boycott her classes and try to get another source of training class to open up in your area. Perhaps you may like to go on a training course and set up a better method of dog/puppy training course yourself.

    7 Top Dog Training Tips

    • what is this going to teach the dog??? hey, im going to choke you and hurt you until you lie down? NO THAT'S SO WRONG!!!!!! if you want to get technical, that is animal abuse and the lady should be fired for what she does with animals.

    • it might depends on how hard she hit him and how bad she did it any ways that training style sucks do and reward is the best way and not going full blast im going to murder you anger like just pop them when thier bad

    • dog training is like anything else., (pick an occupation). There are those that have it and those that don't. This woman should not be training.

    • Good training NEVER includes hitting. Turn her in, that is terrible

    • I agree that the forcing the dog to lie down by pulling the leash thing is harsh, because forcing a dog to sit or lie down can cause joint problems later on.
I'm not so sure about the yelling at your dog.
She should've just said either "NO!" or "QUIET" in a loud, but not screaming, low voice.
She shouldn't hit a dog EVER. A water spray is enough, or a tap on the nose or a harsh stare-down.
Usually people who are "Certified dog trainers" Follow what they have to do in college to get past it, but when they graduate they do whatever they want because they think that their methods are better.
Yeah, she shouldn't be a trainer.
You have to be POSITIVE, happy, energetic! Not screaming, angry, and frustrated.
Try reporting her, or warning others of her violence?

    • What are these ladies credentials?
If she has trained dogs and students that have gone on to AKC or other similar titles then I have no problem with her method of training.

I am not into bribery or cajoling, and if a dog deserves a correction, then so be it.

Your reporting of the incidents seem to be biased and even so I can not get worked up about what you described.

ADD: Of course you are a clicker trainer, I could tell by your post. PP folks don't get corrections.
I am curious as to how many dogs you have titled with clicker training?

Dog Health Questions: Neighor ruined our dog sitting trade by paying me anyway. Help!?

My neighbor had a crisis a few days before her 10-day Alaska cruise: her dog sitter cancelled at last moment. She asked me if I would keep her dog. I told her yes, and I thought I knew what I was getting myself into, but it was tougher than I thought. Her dog just turned 1 while she was away, and it is a yappy Maltice. Now it's a cutie, but that dog is in serious need of dog training (plus it peed all over my house). Well, just before she left she said "When I return I want to take you and Marty {my husband} out for dinner" but I said, "Well, I think it would be great if you would be avialable for 10 days of dog sitting for us considering we travel a lot". Well, that was our deal. Now she is back and she just brought over a nice gift from Alaska, a $75 gift certificate to Baby's R Us (I'm 15 wks pregnant), and she gave us a $75 gift certificate to a VERY exp restaurant here in Altanta (the cost of dinner at this place will be at least $150.00). (continued below)

Dog Training Advice For Training Your Best Friend

    Recommended Answer:
I think she realizes her dog is a handful.

I still think the trade is on.

That was the deal. Hold her to it.

When you go away, bring her a token gift from the place you traveled to.

I used to have the same arrangement with my neighbor, but we let the dogs stay in their own house and did visits 4 times a day.

Why it's Important For New Dog Owners to Take Dog Training Seriously

    • Not trying to take away from your frustration but at least she paid you. My so called friend pulled a stunt like that on me, except she never paid, never offered and never watched my dogs. When it was my turn to go away for a weekend she was sick and the avoided calling for about 2 months.

    • It sounds like she was just being very greatful that you agreed to look after her obviously annoying dog on the spur of the moment. After all, her dog did pee all over your house and you really should be in line for some compensation. (I had to replace the carpet in my house after keeping my sister's dog once.) When you get ready to travel yourself ask her if she can keep your dog as the deal stated and get her something equally nice in return. I'm not sure how much dog sitters get paid, but it can't be much more than she spent on gifts for you.

    • Screw he ***** next door, keep your gifts and start saving a little money for a proper dog minding place or kennel sitting. The dog you know will be treated properly in such a place and can have a small holiday as well. Kennels are not as expensive as people think, do some research make some calls and get some quotes. You don't wont to leave your dog with somebody that's going to be cranky at you and taking it out on your dog. You will know exactly what your dog is doing in proper care and it will have the time of its life. Hope that's a little helpful. Sometimes its not the est to take a cheaper way out.

    • well my friend does it too I watched her not house broke baby first for 4 day when she went to TX and she brought gifts and I also watched her dog when she and her Hubby went' to Mexico for 10 day she brought a lot of gifts for my whole family well any way we heave a agreement where she said she would watch my dog whenever I needed to leave the town , but I'm one of those people that only goes to a place where they accept dogs. well any way I think that you need to keep the agreement she is maybe feeling just guilty for leaving the dog with you on such a short notice , and that's why she brought all the gifts for you guys . so when the time comes just go over and ask her if she could watch your dog when you guys leave , and go from there if she says yes just make sure to remember to bring gifts for her .

    • It sounds like she was genuinely appreciative of you doing this at the last minute and wanted to show it by ALSO gettng you those gift certificates. I think you should THANK her for them and ask her how much notice she will need for the dog sitting (maybe she can dog sit for a day or two while you are in the hospital with the new baby). I don't think she is trying to get out of the dog sitting.

    • I would think she knows how crazy her dog is and wanted to pay you a little something for your trouble. Why was she getting a dog sitter anyways if you guys have a open trade??

If you ever need her I would ask her a few weeks before your trip and see how she takes it! if she sounds weird about it- I would sign up for another pet sitter. if she DOES keep your pup I would get her a LITTLE something- Nothing over $50.

    • I think she was just great full you watched her dog at the last second and wanted to do something nice for you. Since she said she would still watch your dog I'd go ahead and ask when you go away. I prefer my pets to stay at someone's house myself, then I know they are getting attention and not in a cage the whole time I'm gone and alone all night. It would be nice if you could bring her back something from your trip as a thank you.

    • i just think she was thanking u on such last min thing. if u hadn't watched her dog she may have had to cancel or pay alot to a kennel to board which would be more than what she gave u in gifts.... besides puppy sitting is a lot of work and u got a 'bun in the oven'. and yes u should get her a little gift for watching ur dog when u take a trip.....wish i had nice nieghbors....
      oh and congrats!

    • Your neighbor sounds like a sweet, caring, and giving person.
It seems like she brought you gifts because she was grateful that you took good care of her pet, and not that she wasnt wanting to watch your dog. I am sure she didnt think about it the whole time while on vacation.
Can you imagine her going around trying to shop for a gift for you thinking the whole time "Is this gift good enough so I can get out of watching the neighbors dog"????????
I dont think so. She will still watch your dog and now its your turn to get her a gift to show her how grateful you are. And dont worry about the price of the gift, you should find a cool unique one that she will love!!!
And maybe you could invite her, and her dog over for a Bar-B-Que, and whos knows, maybe you, and your dog both have made a friend for life.
And if not a close friend, then a nice reliable, close to home, in-home pet sitter.
We could all be so lucky! Whe I go out of town, its like pulling teeth to get anyone I know, (including family members, whos dogs I have sat for), to watch my animlas. I dont mind boarding my dogs, but I cant board, chickens, cats and Horses. But whoever does watch them, usually my cousins kids, or a neighbor kid, I always try to either pay them, cook a kick^%$ meal for them, or bring them a gift.

P.S. Just a hint here, but her thinking of getting you a gift for your new baby alone, was totally awesome. She must like you to remember that you were pregnant. She knew that her gift would be well used and appreciated. She sounds so kind, wish my neighbos were like that. LOL

    • No dog is born with good manners. Pooping on the carpet, leaping enthusiastically onto guests, pulling so hard he practically yanks your arm out of the socket when on walks -- that's all perfectly acceptable in the canine world. It's up to you to teach your dog to behave the way we humans want him to. Dog Health Questions: Dog training HELP !!!!?

ok so a women at work asked me for some help with her 3 year old boarder collie mix. so when the owners arn't home she is as well behaved as ever. but when they are home she wil go into the trash and take out tissues and rip them to shreds and eat them right in front of you. and when you try to take it all away she becomes aggressive and growls . please any ideas as to how to get this dog to stop goin into the trash

Dog Training & Dog Obedience Guide

    Recommended Answer:
It sounds like she found something that attracts attention to her, and whenever they are home, she is going to do it. With a Border Collie, even a mix of one, they need a job and lots of attention and exercise. They are a great, very intelligent breed (the smartest, many believe) and it sounds like her way of getting her owners to focus on her is by making them a bit annoyed. But at least they are focused on her.

When she does this, get a toy, and encourage her to play tug, or fetch instead. This way, she uses her own toys to get attention. But also, it probably means that she is bored stiff. See if there can be an increase in walks at least, but finding anything to assign her as a job. This breed thrives off of work.

Is My Jack Russell Suitable For Schutzhund Dog Training?

    • Jillian put it perfectly. Make sure that the dog has plenty of exercise and enrichment; a smart dog like a border collie will turn into a nightmare to take care of otherwise. It is often because of not enough entertainment that behavioral problem develops, especially in more intelligent breeds such as this one. Try getting the trash can out of the dog's reach, too-- what she can't get, she can't tear up, right?

    • Negative reinforcement is the process that strengthens a behavior because an unpleasant situation is stopped or avoided as a consequence of that particular behavior. For instance, pushing on your dog's shoulders will provoke an unpleasant situation for him. If the pressure over his shoulders disappears when he lies down, he will be more likely to do the same in the future, just to avoid that unpleasant sensation. Thus, your dog will be learning to lie down through negative reinforcement.

    • You could try to take the garbage and put it in a spot where she can't reach it or you could find some chew toys at a local pet store that look a little or similar to the items in the garbage. If there are no look-alike toys just get a few soft chew toys for them to try to get apart but they can't. Make sure the toy is strong. =)

    • you can recommend this website to her: http://tlebeau.sitstay.hop.clickbank.net…
It's a complete dog training program for only $37. It's been extremely popular and a lot of people have had great success in training their dogs with it.

    • Get some toys/balls as a substitute. This is a high energy breed that needs to play and exercise. Playing a game of fetch or tug will likely be an acceptable substitute for her tissue issue. ;-)

    • Sounds like she isn't getting attention and is seeking it in other ways. I would make sure she gets attention and praise.

How do I keep my dog from following the other dog he only does it when they are together

    Reward Dog Training

    Recommended Answer:
I wouldn't let them hang out together, at least not until your friends dog is trained

A Long Tradition of Dog Training

    • Well if they are both males and one is marking chances are the other male is going to follow and mark over where he did. Watch him around your friend's dog and when you see him about to lift his leg on something clap your hands and make a loud noise. This should be enough to startle him and if you keep at it he'll soon associate when he is lifting his leg to pee on something in the house hes going to get startled by a loud noise.

    • It will continue to happen unless your friends dog get trained. Here is some good advice don't let them have play dates inside the house until one of them is very well trained

Dog Health Questions: My dream is to own a dog specialty store, how do i make it reality?

I'm 19 and currently working full time as a manager/owner at a home store that my mom owns. What i really want to do is have a dog specialty store of my own. What steps should i take to make this dream of mine be possible? I don't want it to be a franchise, i want it to be entirely mine.

Should i save? Take a dog training course? Take a grooming course? Take a business course( i already know a lot about owning and running a business.

    Where do i start?

Dog Training Career: Doing It and Loving It

    Recommended Answer:
You have made a start by coming up with a general idea of what you want to do, so how do you go about this.
You need starting capital this can be either saving or from a loan if its the latter always shop around for the best deal and don't be afraid to play lenders off against each other.

You will need to know what you are doing so make sure you have the knowledge otherwise you will fail before you begin, or you can either hire or sublet space to experienced staff and charge them a fee.

Attending a business course will only benefit you there is lots of information on line that you can research so use it.

Accounts can be tedious and time consuming and it can be beneficial to get an accountant to sort them for you a general book keeping course can help you run the business day to day.

Premises can be sourced locally so shop around and try to find a place with a good passing trade and parking.

Demand is needed, is there a demand for the services you want to offer

There are hundreds of things you need to take into consideration so research, research, research and the best of luck to you.

Some Helpful Tips To Help You With Your Dog Training Abilities

    • Love the idea! Your best bet is to narrow it down to what you want to do in your doggie business. Do you want fashion (collars and clothing), a bakery (treats and yummies), training, grooming and wash, doggie sitting?

I'd say a business course would be a good place to start. You can find one at your local community college. Maybe an accounting class as well.

      Best of luck!

Dog Health Questions: German words dog training?

my german shepherd is undergoing training and already knows some of the german word commands. I am trying to train him that when he is in sit position and someone approaches I want to say a word to him to indicate that the person is 'ok" that he can allow himself to be petted and another word that he needs to be on alert. Can someone suggest something? my trainer does not like the word "ok" because if someone approaches and the dog is not sure and I say "ok" the dog witll think its OK to be nervous Makes sense. I just need a word to relate with a good feeling to the dog about a friendly person approaching. thanks!

The Benefits Of Positive Dog Training

    Recommended Answer:
Although my dogs are trained in several languages, not all at the same time of course, I use the word, "be friends"...in English. As far as your real question, EVERYONE is a friend with the dog until told differently by you and that word is "passaulf" and it is proceeded if you wish by the word "packen" which means "bite". Hope I helped!!

Dog Training And Electronic Shock Collars

    • The words don't matter but you really need to train the dog as well as yourself. You can say anything and associate it with specific training - the words are of no concern. Choose a word dear - doesn't matter what it is since dogs don't speak any verbal language. They communicate through body language and smell but not verbal language. Whatever word you choose will simply be a cue but it won't be as strong a cue as what you do with your body and the smell you give off from the situation. The dog doesn't know what 'okay' means or doesn't mean. You don't need to have the dog 'undergo training' - YOU need to undergo training with the dog as the vast majority of training isn't the dog but the human.

    • you can use what ever you need, "OFF" to watch them, "IN" to let them near, what you choose have to be used all the time and you must stick to it all the time for the dog to understand, So it does not matter what you use as long as it is not your basic commands words. You do not have to use words, make a noise/sound for the dog "to be on alert" and a different noise/sound to let them stroke him or approach him what ever you use you must stick with it for it to work.

    • Not sure the spelling but 'Das ist gut' kind of means its okay.

You could use 'brav' as well. I agree with Greekman, though. A good protection dog views people as friendly until told otherwise. In my opinion you shouldn't need a special word to tell the dog someone is okay unless you are in an area where the threat of being assaulted is a daily occurance.

Dog Health Questions: Dog Training, Keeping dog from running over baby.?

My 9 month old likes to walk and play on the floor. My 2 month old puppy likes to play obviously and he likes to run. The problem I am having is the puppy will run and then right into the baby. Or run over the baby. I know keep him out of room and all that are a good thought. But I want him to be accustom to the baby. I do have a crate for the dog and he sleeps in the crate. What are some good training techniques to keep the dog from running over the baby or even trying to steal his food.

A Few Dog Training Success Tips You Need to Know

    Recommended Answer:
OK - poor baby! I'm not an expert but I have a large dog who likes to run over my nieces and nephews (not on purpose, just play).

What I'm doing is teaching the kids to be calm around him and not giving him attention until he is in a calm sit/stay. The second he gets a bit rowdy - I send him to his "place". It's a mat in the kitchen where he must go as kind of a time out. Once he's calm, I release him.

When we have food - out the dogs go - to their place so we can eat in piece - that goes for everyone!

    Good luck

    • I would respectfully suggest you read a couple of books and watch some videos on raising and training dogs. Also, I recommend two TV shows, "The Dog Whisperer" with Cesar Millan on the National Geographic Channel, and "It's Me or the Dog," with Victoria Stillwell, on Animal Planet. Both programs are very instructive and often deal with the issues you raise here. Good luck!

Dog Health Questions: How do i tell my new roommate to change her dog training techniques?

My new roomate has a 1 year old weimaraner and she doesn't know how to take care of it. She takes her dog for about a 10 minute walk a day and we don't have a yard. And anyone who knows anything about hunting dogs knows they need a lot of exercise. And when he does something wrong when she is gone she comes home and hits him pretty hard on the nose. My other roomates have picked up on this and have been hitting him on the nose as well, this is a technique that ALL dog training books say never to do. So basically i need to tell this girl i dont even know that she is seriously damaging her dog. How do i do this??

Dog Training Techniques - The Fundamentals

    Recommended Answer:
Just tell her and say what you just say to us, how it needs a lot of exercise and how the way you do this hurts your dogs also mention the fact tha physically scolding a dog can lead to fear and aggression which could cause a lot of problems for her and her dogs. hope i help :)

She might get mad that a total stranger is correcting her but at least she'll learn and tell her the correct way of scolding a dog is a stern and low "No" kind of like a growl to a dog which is enough to show that what the dog did was wrong.

Dog Training Jobs - How to Become a Professional Dog Trainer

    • You don't.
Unless you are seeing what actually IS abuse by legal standards, the best course of action is for you to mind your own business.

    • Buy her Cesar Millan's book The Dog Whisperer. You can go online to find it. Excellent dog rehabilitator and people trainer. This dog is going to backfire big time if something isn't done.

    • They could also damage the dogs snout. You could also tell her that all she is doing is fear training the dog and thats not good either.

    • Give her a book and maybe take the dog on 2 more walks yourself

    • You explain to her (as you have to us) what you see and feel is wrong. Hitting a dog makes it either; become a bitter, possibly aggressive or vicious, or makes it fearful & hand-shy, which can also predispose it to bit (in fear).

If you cannot correct the dog AS it is doing something wrong, you can't correct it later & have the dog have any IDEA what is going on. Dogs only live in the present and cannot associate a hit now with a former action on their part, at some prior point in the day. The dog is being taught to simply associate people coming home, to mean it will be HIT.

    Dog Health Questions: Dog training-aggression?

I am having trouble enrolling my 7 month old dog into beginner dog training classes. Petsmart and a couple others don't accept dogs with 'dog aggression' issues. My dog is an awesome dog but does not like other dogs at all and is cautious of new people too. I don't know what to do now!

    Electronic Dog Training Collars

    Recommended Answer:
Ive came across a free blog on a couple of things http://top-dog-crates.blogspot.com/ they have free reports check it out

Dog Training Tips - Training Dogs For Your Own Benefit

    • Look in the area for training classes that will accept them.
Also, in the meantime, get your dog better socialized - start by taking the dog somewhere that they can see other people and dogs, but not be too close to them. When the dog is sitting quietly, playing with a toy or you, quietly praise the pet the dog, and give her the occasional treat.
Then, when a dog can handle this at a particular distance, move a little closer to the action.
Do this gradually, a little bit at a time, so the dog can be comfortable first before being thrust into the midst of commotion.
It will take time, but it will definitely be worth it in the long run.

And for classes, keep checking your area. Check with local shelters or your vet for recommendations.

    • If you attempt this on your own, you may increase any problems with your dog; the correction should not be harsh or ill timed or you will INCREASE the dog's "aggression".

You should have a behaviorist asses if this is real aggression, probably based on fear, or just poor communication and excitement.

If you have real fear based aggression - then you will want to desensitize and counter condition. This is a process of slowly (with enough distance to avoid high arousal) combining the fear stimulus (other dogs) with an extremely high value treat (never used for anything else). The timing of this is very important and strongly suggest you get a qualified person to help you.

The following site contains behaviorists and certified trainers, people with real training, not just a website:
http://www.apdt.com/ will have listings of certified trainers -probably in your area.

Books you can use to begin training and building the correct relationship with your dog include:

Dr. Ian Dunbar's Good Little Dog Book or
Before & Affter Getting your Puppy: The Positive Approach

Or a book written by a teaching dog:
Sit, Down, Stay: Dog Training so Easy a Human Can Do It. by Dozer P. KingsburyPlease do something now, your dog is in a fear imprinting stage and can only get worse, rapidly.

    • You need a private trainer or go to the library and get a training tape on teaching dog aggressive dogs. You need to take a strong stand with him, using a training collar and be stern when he gets aggressive, let him know you will not tolerate that behavior. Get his mind off the dog and on you by commanding him, sit, down stay.

    • Read some books from the dog whisperer and get a personal trainer for your dog.

My mother in law had this problem with her dog and found that because SHE got nervous with her dog being around other dogs, her dog could sense that and would bark and try to attack other dogs.

I think if you read his books and try to bring the dog around people more and be happy and smile and relaxed your dog will relax too.

Maybe try taking him to some dog parks in the area as well? So he gets used to being around other dogs? But make sure he has a good leash.

    • The Humane Society, in the Minneapolis area anyways, offers classes for aggressive dogs as well as wallflowers. Seeing as your pup is only 7 mos. old, I would think that they'd be more than willing to work with you.

We had a German shepard in one of our classes that wore a wire cage muzzle. There wasn't any issue. It was also in a huge open gym, so everyone was able to have their own space.

      Good luck!

    • Fearfuld, great read suggestions. Add to that "Canine body language" by Brenda Aloff. This book will teach you to read your pups body language so you can redirect his behavior before anything bad happens. The problem with muzzles is that the more restraint you use on your pup, the more fearful it will become. Use a muzzle only if you feel eminant danger.

    • Find a trainer to help you. Read

      Click To Calm
      Feisty Fido
      Control Unleashed

to help you understand how you change how a dog feels about other dogs. Change the feeling and you'll change the behavior. Do not punish your dog for his behavior, often aggression is caused by fear.

Dog Health Questions: What is the best dog training method? And why do people in here hate Cesar Milan?

Every so often, someone in here goes on a soapbox rant about Cesar Milan. What is a better training method, and WHY is his so bad? If it works, what is the problem? I am really curious.

    Secrets to Dog Training Reviewed

    Recommended Answer:
I have never worked with nor met the man, can't hate someone I have never met in person. What we see on TV is an edited piece, not everything can be shown in the time slot he is given (can't remember if it is 30 mins long or 60 mins long). The man is not an actor, he has no formal training as one, just because he has a TV shows and does the occasional cameo does not mean he is an actor. He is a self taught behavioral based trainer, more emphasis on behaviorist than trainer. He has made it clear for the longest time that he does not train the dogs, he trains the people to train their dog. I can not deny that he has success in what he does, the proof is in the pudding. He was training long before he got a show, it is because of his successes that he even has a show. Have to admire a man who comes from nothing, immigrates to a country that now frowns upon the very thing that made up this country in the first place, and has built up his successes and is now doing well for himself. The man does have it right about calm and assertiveness, plus his discipline, exercise then affection.

There is NO best training method, it is absurd to think otherwise. No one training method is universally correct. As all dogs are different and respond differently to training methods. I personally believe in a balance of positive and negative, corrections and praise. As I feel like with anything in life, balance is needed.

    Understanding Dog Training Schools

    • Since this is the place for opinions, here's mine: His methods are not for people who need to be taught the most basic things about how to handle dogs. Some of these dogs have been allowed to get to a point where only time and/or a lot of fearless correction from a professional will work. Of course, he showcases those because it's dramatic and makes good TV. I think of Patti LaBelle who had poor Nasir in a cage in her garage, and no one could get near him for 3 1/2 years. And, I remember in one case he took a dog back with him to his training ground and kept it for a month.

I haven't had access to his shows for quite a while, and didn't get to see many while I did, but if this is a common way for him to teach correct behaviors, it does show that these owners are clueless, and they need heavy duty teaching themselves as much as the dog does. Also, I saw at least one episode where he got physical with dogs, in the way dogs do with each other. But this is rather too harsh by many people's standards. And, most people are not going attempt to correct behaviors the way he does. If they had the right chutzpa (for lack of a better word) in the first place, they wouldn't need a trainer to come in.

As for what's best, probably a variety of methods and assessing your dog to to find out which techniques would work best with his temperament. Dogs are different. I don't think "one size fits all".

    • I think the training method depends on the dog. While I'm all for positive training I think my dog understands a bit more if I correct him for what he's done wrong as well. I don't agree with everything he does, like those little 'nips' he gives dogs with his hand for correction but I suppose it depends on what works for the dog. Also when he dragged that dog across the tile floor or whatever the type of flooring it was, the dog was absolutely terrified. Sure I want my dog to get over a fear, but thats not the way I would do it.

    • One method fits all just doesn't work. Each breed or groups of breeds requires a different approach. A chow requires a different approach than a lab and a yorkie a different approach than a pekingese. Some things are one for all but after the very basic, sit, down, it's about each breed and sometimes each dog within the same breed.

Milan is about making money of course.

Dog training is 10% book work and 90% owner hands on and owner gut instinct provided the dog owner is of average intelligence and isn't a nut job.

    • Because Cesar Milan is an ACTOR, not a dog trainer. So many people who armchair their dog training do not realize that and live in la-la land.

I won't go into detail, as that has been done on here plenty of times, and all the articles are available for you to read yourself!

The best dog training method is the one you find that fits for you and your local trainer that you use, not some TV fool out to make money. You cannot train a dog by watching TV or asking people on Y/A.

    • The reason people say he is more of an actor than a dog trainer has nothing to do with acting. It's saying that he's more of an entertainer who is all style and little substance. When you see his shows, what do you watch? Do you watch how he actually trains the dogs or do you focus on him? I would be willing to say that most people focus on him. That's why people say he's an actor. He talks a lot but you don't see much on how the dogs are actually trained nor do you see him really teaching the owners on how to follow through with the training after he's gone.

    • i am a groomer and i have worked with all breeds my whole life. The thing that you have to understand is understanding the breed that you have looks like a king charles and the nature of that breed .. I say displine in a postive manner and sometimes babying can be the worst thing makes them think there bad behavior is ok a pat on the head is fine.. easiest way i can sum it up ... there is always the option of going to school. People that hav things to say aboout cesar is because they are igorant to the subject of dogs there are very few people that truly understand dogs and the breeds therfore they do not understand him ... i hav a high respect ... He is one of the few thats knos that when a dog get men its for a reason and they are not a lost cause he trains them back

    • I prefer marker training above all others.

Cesar uses intimidation and out dated theories to "train" dogs. Mute the tv and watch the dogs. They are anxious and fearful, he increases their stress until the dogs give up.

Also, he's an actor. No way in hell would I let some actor train my dog.

    • Cesar Milan has had great success with training both dogs and their owners. If he makes money at the same time, more power to him. However, not every method works for every dog or every circumstance. If you are uncertain, talk with your vet. What is important is what works for you and your dog.

    • I don't know, but I don't use a specific method. Just consistency, and good behavior equals good consequences. No treats. I use praising and playing. So many treat trained dogs won't do anything unless a treat is in hand. My dogs are on a raw diet, so treats are out, anyway.

    • My issue with Cesar is not his training method it is the fact that he does not teach the people that actually live with the dog to maintain it. The food he supposedly developed is crap.

    • Every method has its place. Every dog is different and they may respond to different methods.

    • I think Cesar Milan is great and your right if it works and your not abusing the dog then whats the problem.

    • simple and useful method http://bit.ly/fAcQ6e

    • I don't hate Cesar Milan - who is he?

    thanks!

Dog Training Hand Signal - Train Your Dog To Sit With Only Showing Your Hand

    Recommended Answer:
No dog is born with good manners. Pooping on the carpet, leaping enthusiastically onto guests, pulling so hard he practically yanks your arm out of the socket when on walks--that's all perfectly acceptable in the canine world. It's up to you to teach your dog to behave the way we humans want him to. Not training your dog and expecting him to be pleasant to live with is like never sending your child to school and expecting him to ace the SATs.

    http://dogtime.com/training.html

Common Tools Used In Dog Training Schools

    • give him a name hes used 2 like randomly say a name 5 times if he ignores a name then say another 1 keep doing it till his ears perks up wen u say a name

    • dont chase him! use a really long retractable leash and 'let him go' but just lenghthen the leash length. then when he starts running turn your back and ignore him. when you chase him he thinks youre playing with him. good luckk! :D

    • You have to start training him to come when he's on a leash! Once he can do that, then get him to come in a large room in your house off the leash, then, in a fenced-in yard off the leash. it has to be done in small baby steps and it will take a while.

Of course, you should never have your animal running loose; cars will hit it, it could eat something, someone could shoot it, and your state probably has a leash law.

If you want the dog to stay in your yard, build a LONG dog run (do NOT just chain the dog) or build a fence. If you've got any questions, mail me! My emails on my profile page.

      Good luck!

    • i don't know if your dog has had any obedience training but form your answer it sounds rather like a no (sorry if i'm wrong). So i assume he has not - you need to spend a lot of time teaching him who is the leader and training him to perform basic obedience commands.
To have a dog come to you - if you chase or move towards your dog, he will never come to you and he will see it as a game that you are tring to catch him. Have a yummy treat in your hand (like cooked chicken pieces) and let him know what you have. Once he is coming towards you to get his treat, say Come! and when he reaches you without running away, reward him. You can do this on a leash first, but dont use the command many times in a row as your dog will learn that he doesnt have to obey you the first time you say it.
Another tip is to tie ur dog on the leash, tie your leash to your waist and don't say anything to the dog, just walk anywhere like you normally would, and when the dog starts pulling the other direction, walk the opposite way so he has to learn to follow you. Do this for about 2 weeks as many times per day as you can, the longer the better, and after some time your dog will learn to follow you without the leash too.
EDIT - are you taking your dog on daily long walks? or is he just in the garden the whole time? dogs need exercise, some more than others and when they have too much energy, you can't train them as they will not listen, so make sure you drain off some of his energy by a longer walk or a game and you can train him after he has calmed down.

    • first do not chase after them. they will only think your playing with them bad experience with my uncles dog who got lose took 30 minutes to get him back inside the house.

What i do is i show my puppy her favorite treat and say "come".
-she comes and gets her treats do this until she learns what 'comes' means
-try praising her or giving her treats mix it up.

do not say 'come' and when she does 'comes' punish her otherwise she will not come to you.

its better if they think 'come' means happy not getting punish.

and if they do not come don't keep repeating 'come' because they will eventually think come means ignore you!!! and start to ignore you.

    • You can take him to a petsmart and they will take great care of him ... my dog is very obidient but can still horse around when its time.. she loves going back cuz the ppl are nice and rub her and evrything.... its the treats tht the dogs love and they have thousands.. plus if they finish early they excersize them
