Dog Health Questions: Should we call corp office on dog trainer? Help!?

My Mom got her dog trained at Petsmart. She went through puppy class and graduated. Upon grad, the trainer asked if she wanted to repeat the class or be promoted to intermediate. My Mom chose to sign up for interm because the trainer said she graduated. Duh! We then decided to bring our 3 year old terrier to training who had been through Petsmart puppy class but never graduated because of the trainer at the other store's incompetency and some issues. I worked with him myself. Both of them last night were hungry and bored and didn't cooperate. Suddenly, the trainer told us to get out and that both dogs had to go back to puppy class. When we tried to get a refund, he jumped out of the training room and started telling the manager not to give a refund and that we needed to wait and take the class in a few months and they will hold our money on file with our receipt. I think he had no right to tell my Mom and the manager what to do and if we wanted a refund, we could have gotten it (Petsmart's policy). Should we just go back to that trainer (both dogs do need training, but NOT from him!) or call corporate office and fuss?

Aggressive Dog Training: 6 Tips to Civilize Your Dog

Recommended Answer:
I would say have your dog trained by a professional and quit messing around with those glorified wanna bes at Pet Smart. They are sales people in the times they are no doing the so called training classes.

But yes I would get in touch with the corporate office and file a formal complaint against the store and employees involved

Dog Training Help

  • call corporate, demand your refund and find a different trainer!!!!!!!!!!!

    try going to:

    http://www.apdt.com/

"american pet dog trainers association" they have trainers in most areas of the usa

  • you want an apology and a refund so fuss a little and then go to a different trainer obviously

  • Fuss for your refund call office

  • That i would say is unfair. Yes... fuss but nothing serious, mind. Just enough for an apology and refund.

  • If it were me, I'd take it up with management and go up as high as needed to get a refund for training that wasn't recieved...

...and then I'd definitely find a different trainer...alas, I've not really heard anything positive about Petsmart's training classes, although I'm sure some of the stores do luck out and get knowledgable trainers...I opted to go through a (group) puppy class with a local private trainer and was very pleased...she also provides "lifetime support" as long as you own that dog, you can return to class at any time for a refresher or for help (group or one-on-one) with a specific issue, at no additional charge...

  • PetsMart does not offer a money back guarantee, according to their website. Should have done some homework and you would have found out that PetsMarts trainers are incompetent, have no idea what they are doing. Why didn't you call the local kennel club and sign up for their classes.

YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR, WHICH IS ENTIRELY TOO MUCH AT PETSMART. So, quit your b1tching! No one wants to hear it. Do what you want. Why do you have to come here to ask total strangers what to do?

AND, I also believe that there's much more to this story than we are being told.

  • Sorry, but there is so much missing out of this story!

Being a corporation, and having to give good customer service in order to stay in business, large companies don't just allow this kind of behavior from their associates. Something ELSE has to be going on here.

If I am off track at all here, you should be able to talk to the store manager and get your refund. It is that simple, really. There is no reason to have to go to corporate to get a refund unless something ELSE is going on that caused this store to think you were not entitled to a refund.

"Suddenly, the trainer told us to get out" No one would do that without good reason.

  • First, you have to start doing your business in writing when you have a conflict with someone that involves money. Sounds like the trainer over-reacted. You'll win this one if you can stay on the higher ground.

Write a polite, brief, businesslike letter outlining the facts of the matter in a calm, reasonable manner and stating specifically what you want done (refund, or whatever.) Send it to the manager of that PetSmart. Wait for an answer. If the answer isn't to your liking, send a copy of both letters to corporate headquarters. Emails are okay if you're thanking a company but if you're having a conflict over money always send a paper mail, and don't try settling things over the phone because that doesn't give you a record of what they do to respond to you.

Dog Health Questions: Dog training questions?

okay,I have a new puppy and she loves to bite and play...but the problem is that she cant be trained!!!hot could I train her and shat should I do in order for her to behave and not be a baby anymore???

So You Want A Career In Dog Training

Recommended Answer:
If she is a puppy - she IS a baby. If you didn't like that behavior, I would have gotten an adult dogs. Some larger breeds are not considered settled down and passed all the puppy-ness until the age of 2.

That's how I got my dog. Someone "threw him away" when he was 6 months old because he acted "too much like a puppy" and I adopted him and since I had the love to give him, he has grown up into a still playful but wonderful dog.

It takes time and patience...and a little time to let them grow up...to train a puppy. Training is the little things you do everyday, it doesn't happen overnight.

The Evolution of Dog Training

  • well if obiedence is the problem there are many ways you could go at it. what you could do is give it a toy or let it nimble on ur thumb. if hes getting too rough give him a stern NO. DONT YELL. yelling will make it worse. if hes going in rooms he no suppose to there are sprays that can keep him out. they stink to him, you can't smell a thing and there will be no discoloration on your carpet. and give him treats for doing the right thing every now and then not everytime. if you give it to him everytime he'll just keep doing wrong things and do a good thing just for a treat. he'll know the difference. just try some new methods and go on dor training websites.

  • make it seem like training is like playing, don't scold her, one way for sit is, hold a treat in yor hand so she can see it, then gently push down her bottem while saying "sit", and when she does, praise her and give her the treat, dog training books also might help. Scolding = negative effect, praising = positive effect!

  • The best suggestion is to sign up for puppy training classes at your local pet supply superstore like PetsMart. They will be a big help in the correct way to train your puppy.

    Good luck

  • Hi ,
Well i found this really helpful guide ,its a really professional training called sit stay fetch , it teaches you how to train your dog by yourself , check it out at http://www.dogobediencetraining.co.nr , its a easy step by step videos and book Hope this helps you with your dog
    Good luck

  • She's a baby. She's going to play like that until she's over a year old. You can't expect a baby to just "grow up" and not act like a baby.

She's biting, probably because she's teething. Buy her some chew sticks or toys that she can chew on, so it's not your arm that she latches on to. If she does, you need to firmly say, "no" and ignore her. After awhile, she'll get the idea that biting you or others is bad!

Training requires lots of time and effort. If you keep at it, (no beating, rubbing noses in poo, etc.) and praise her every time she does something good (important!), she will learn.

Dog Health Questions: Neighor ruined our dog sitting trade by paying me anyway. Help!?

My neighbor had a crisis a few days before her 10-day Alaska cruise: her dog sitter cancelled at last moment. She asked me if I would keep her dog. I told her yes, and I thought I knew what I was getting myself into, but it was tougher than I thought. Her dog just turned 1 while she was away, and it is a yappy Maltice. Now it's a cutie, but that dog is in serious need of dog training (plus it peed all over my house). Well, just before she left she said "When I return I want to take you and Marty {my husband} out for dinner" but I said, "Well, I think it would be great if you would be avialable for 10 days of dog sitting for us considering we travel a lot". Well, that was our deal. Now she is back and she just brought over a nice gift from Alaska, a $75 gift certificate to Baby's R Us (I'm 15 wks pregnant), and she gave us a $75 gift certificate to a VERY exp restaurant here in Altanta (the cost of dinner at this place will be at least $150.00). (continued below)

Dog Training Advice For Training Your Best Friend

Recommended Answer:
I think she realizes her dog is a handful.

I still think the trade is on.

That was the deal. Hold her to it.

When you go away, bring her a token gift from the place you traveled to.

I used to have the same arrangement with my neighbor, but we let the dogs stay in their own house and did visits 4 times a day.

Why it's Important For New Dog Owners to Take Dog Training Seriously

  • Not trying to take away from your frustration but at least she paid you. My so called friend pulled a stunt like that on me, except she never paid, never offered and never watched my dogs. When it was my turn to go away for a weekend she was sick and the avoided calling for about 2 months.

  • It sounds like she was just being very greatful that you agreed to look after her obviously annoying dog on the spur of the moment. After all, her dog did pee all over your house and you really should be in line for some compensation. (I had to replace the carpet in my house after keeping my sister's dog once.) When you get ready to travel yourself ask her if she can keep your dog as the deal stated and get her something equally nice in return. I'm not sure how much dog sitters get paid, but it can't be much more than she spent on gifts for you.

  • Screw he ***** next door, keep your gifts and start saving a little money for a proper dog minding place or kennel sitting. The dog you know will be treated properly in such a place and can have a small holiday as well. Kennels are not as expensive as people think, do some research make some calls and get some quotes. You don't wont to leave your dog with somebody that's going to be cranky at you and taking it out on your dog. You will know exactly what your dog is doing in proper care and it will have the time of its life. Hope that's a little helpful. Sometimes its not the est to take a cheaper way out.

  • well my friend does it too I watched her not house broke baby first for 4 day when she went to TX and she brought gifts and I also watched her dog when she and her Hubby went' to Mexico for 10 day she brought a lot of gifts for my whole family well any way we heave a agreement where she said she would watch my dog whenever I needed to leave the town , but I'm one of those people that only goes to a place where they accept dogs. well any way I think that you need to keep the agreement she is maybe feeling just guilty for leaving the dog with you on such a short notice , and that's why she brought all the gifts for you guys . so when the time comes just go over and ask her if she could watch your dog when you guys leave , and go from there if she says yes just make sure to remember to bring gifts for her .

  • It sounds like she was genuinely appreciative of you doing this at the last minute and wanted to show it by ALSO gettng you those gift certificates. I think you should THANK her for them and ask her how much notice she will need for the dog sitting (maybe she can dog sit for a day or two while you are in the hospital with the new baby). I don't think she is trying to get out of the dog sitting.

  • I would think she knows how crazy her dog is and wanted to pay you a little something for your trouble. Why was she getting a dog sitter anyways if you guys have a open trade??

If you ever need her I would ask her a few weeks before your trip and see how she takes it! if she sounds weird about it- I would sign up for another pet sitter. if she DOES keep your pup I would get her a LITTLE something- Nothing over $50.

  • I think she was just great full you watched her dog at the last second and wanted to do something nice for you. Since she said she would still watch your dog I'd go ahead and ask when you go away. I prefer my pets to stay at someone's house myself, then I know they are getting attention and not in a cage the whole time I'm gone and alone all night. It would be nice if you could bring her back something from your trip as a thank you.

  • i just think she was thanking u on such last min thing. if u hadn't watched her dog she may have had to cancel or pay alot to a kennel to board which would be more than what she gave u in gifts.... besides puppy sitting is a lot of work and u got a 'bun in the oven'. and yes u should get her a little gift for watching ur dog when u take a trip.....wish i had nice nieghbors....
    oh and congrats!

  • Your neighbor sounds like a sweet, caring, and giving person.
It seems like she brought you gifts because she was grateful that you took good care of her pet, and not that she wasnt wanting to watch your dog. I am sure she didnt think about it the whole time while on vacation.
Can you imagine her going around trying to shop for a gift for you thinking the whole time "Is this gift good enough so I can get out of watching the neighbors dog"????????
I dont think so. She will still watch your dog and now its your turn to get her a gift to show her how grateful you are. And dont worry about the price of the gift, you should find a cool unique one that she will love!!!
And maybe you could invite her, and her dog over for a Bar-B-Que, and whos knows, maybe you, and your dog both have made a friend for life.
And if not a close friend, then a nice reliable, close to home, in-home pet sitter.
We could all be so lucky! Whe I go out of town, its like pulling teeth to get anyone I know, (including family members, whos dogs I have sat for), to watch my animlas. I dont mind boarding my dogs, but I cant board, chickens, cats and Horses. But whoever does watch them, usually my cousins kids, or a neighbor kid, I always try to either pay them, cook a kick^%$ meal for them, or bring them a gift.

P.S. Just a hint here, but her thinking of getting you a gift for your new baby alone, was totally awesome. She must like you to remember that you were pregnant. She knew that her gift would be well used and appreciated. She sounds so kind, wish my neighbos were like that. LOL

Dog Health Questions: What can I write off as a dog trainer?

I'm a dog trainer in Canada, I was curious if I can write off my dog's food and dog treats? How about any supplies for my dog such as dog bed, dog toys ect.

I do use my dog as a demo dog and for behavioural sessions at least 50% of the time.
Also can I write off dog training books?

Help With Dog Training

Recommended Answer:
You can deduct ("write off") expenses associated with your business.

Did you get the dog solely for the business, or was it a pet beforehand? If it was a pet, then you can't deduct expenses you would normally have for your pet. If you have any additional expenses, you can deduct them.

If I was doing your return, I would let you deduct dog training books. However, be prepared to justify this if CRA asks. Remember, people with pets buy dog training books too.

Basic Dog Training - Timing And Body Language

  • Hi. I see that you need a guide to help you train your dog to become obedient and more healthy. Recently, I needed the same advise as you. One of my friends recommended the dog training academy course and it really helped me in training my dog in just a few weeks. You may want to try it too.

    Good luck.

    God bless.

Dog Health Questions: Dog training HELP !!!!?

ok so a women at work asked me for some help with her 3 year old boarder collie mix. so when the owners arn't home she is as well behaved as ever. but when they are home she wil go into the trash and take out tissues and rip them to shreds and eat them right in front of you. and when you try to take it all away she becomes aggressive and growls . please any ideas as to how to get this dog to stop goin into the trash

Dog Training & Dog Obedience Guide

Recommended Answer:
It sounds like she found something that attracts attention to her, and whenever they are home, she is going to do it. With a Border Collie, even a mix of one, they need a job and lots of attention and exercise. They are a great, very intelligent breed (the smartest, many believe) and it sounds like her way of getting her owners to focus on her is by making them a bit annoyed. But at least they are focused on her.

When she does this, get a toy, and encourage her to play tug, or fetch instead. This way, she uses her own toys to get attention. But also, it probably means that she is bored stiff. See if there can be an increase in walks at least, but finding anything to assign her as a job. This breed thrives off of work.

Is My Jack Russell Suitable For Schutzhund Dog Training?

  • Jillian put it perfectly. Make sure that the dog has plenty of exercise and enrichment; a smart dog like a border collie will turn into a nightmare to take care of otherwise. It is often because of not enough entertainment that behavioral problem develops, especially in more intelligent breeds such as this one. Try getting the trash can out of the dog's reach, too-- what she can't get, she can't tear up, right?

  • Negative reinforcement is the process that strengthens a behavior because an unpleasant situation is stopped or avoided as a consequence of that particular behavior. For instance, pushing on your dog's shoulders will provoke an unpleasant situation for him. If the pressure over his shoulders disappears when he lies down, he will be more likely to do the same in the future, just to avoid that unpleasant sensation. Thus, your dog will be learning to lie down through negative reinforcement.

  • You could try to take the garbage and put it in a spot where she can't reach it or you could find some chew toys at a local pet store that look a little or similar to the items in the garbage. If there are no look-alike toys just get a few soft chew toys for them to try to get apart but they can't. Make sure the toy is strong. =)

  • you can recommend this website to her: http://tlebeau.sitstay.hop.clickbank.net…
It's a complete dog training program for only $37. It's been extremely popular and a lot of people have had great success in training their dogs with it.

  • Get some toys/balls as a substitute. This is a high energy breed that needs to play and exercise. Playing a game of fetch or tug will likely be an acceptable substitute for her tissue issue. ;-)

  • Sounds like she isn't getting attention and is seeking it in other ways. I would make sure she gets attention and praise.

Dog Health Questions: Dog Training Help Please!!!?

Okay, we just got an 11 week year old labradoodle and I have a few questions.

1. When clicker training, should multiple people be using the clicker or just one?

2. What are the best ways to show that you are dominant?

3. How should I effectively stop nipping?

4. How should I get him to go into his kennel willingly?

5. How should I get him to come and stay by my side without a leash?

If you can answer any or all of the above questions, I would really appreciate it.

Dog Training Tips - Dog Distraction Training

Recommended Answer:
Multiple people can use the clicker (if they all understand what they are doing!) but not at one time.

Don't worry about dominance, just be a clear leader and provide clear and consistent rules. Puppies do NOT need a lot of freedom, management is your friend when they are this young! Any time you need to correct the pup, ask yourself what you could have done to prevent that from happening.

Stop interacting when pup nips.

I clicker train my pups to go in their crates, and also make sure the first few times they go in, they are tired, and have something to chew on. I keep crates near where I'll be, either in the living room, or in the bedroom, so pup is not alone to start with.

For teaching recalls, there are some articles on the clickersolutions.com website, and I also suggest joining the listgroup. Clicker training is great, but is more involved than many people realize when they first get started.

To find a good trainer near you, I suggest choosing from this list, or ask those nearest you for recommendations: http://www.trulydogfriendly.com/blog/?pa…

Is My Jack Russell Suitable For Schutzhund Dog Training?

  • You need to take the pup to "puppy class"! If that isn't available, get a book on dog training! Your vet can make good recommendations.

  • yep- one answer- Puppy class- find one- go
humane society's or local pet stores often offer classes

  • 1. Only one person should be training the dog at any given time. You need to be precise with that clicker. If two or more people are clicking the dog will become confused. Set up training sessions so that one person trains one time and another might train later in the day, just make sure you are training the same way or the dog will be trying to learn two different methods of how to sit, for example.
    2. Please don't worry about that. Through training your dog and setting boundaries (like not allowed to do this or that) your dog will know that you are in charge. You don't need to worry about "alpha rolling" which could cause submissive behaviors or anything else that could potentially cause aggression. Just treat your dog with respect and show him the rules and you will be the world to him.
    3. To stop nipping there are two ideas to try. First, if he is nipping you while playing, STOP playing immediately and walk away from him. By taking away the "fun stuff" (you), he will realize that when his teeth touch you all the fun stops too. Another way is to substitute your arm or leg, whichever he is nipping on, with a toy. Show him what is appropriate to chew.
    4. There are crate games you can play with him. If you google "crate games" you will find tons of these fun games to play with your dog. Another helpful tip is to feed him his meals inside his crate.
    5. It will be a long time before your puppy can be fully trusted off leash. I wouldn' even attempt it without a lot of training first.

Why not try a training class in your area? It is great for socialization for the puppy and it will give you tons of resources for training your dog well. Look for someone who does positive reinforcement training and not harsh corrections. Always check out the trainer and make sure they do what you feel comfortable with. Good Luck!

  • I feel that a puppy training class is the best bet. In my experience, having one strong person training the puppy is the best, although you need to look at your family and your new pet as a pack, and that means that EVERYONE in your family needs to have some sort of "dominance" over your puppy.

I'm not talking "mean" dominance but a calm assertive "I'm the boss and you are the puppy" vibe in your home, right from the beginning. If you look at your family as a pack, the puppy needs to be at the bottom of the "chain of command" all the times. The sooner the puppy realizes his place in your pack the quicker he will be adjusted and comfortable in your home.

In my home we are a pack of three(with no kids) so it was a little easier for our puppy to figure out her place. My wife in the beginning wasn't dominant enough and we found our puppy "humping" her, or stepping out in front of her. She thought it was "being mean" to put the puppy in her place. I had to teach my wife how to be the boss without being mean. It's a tricky touch, but the best way to describe it is is being a "gentle giant" to the pup. Big deep voices, lowering of your tone to say "no," and general voice tone changes are the best way for your pup to know what you are feeling.

I've read a lot of books for raising a pup and they all have their own and very strong opinion. 10 books and 10 opinions. You need to find for yourself what your pup will respond to and go with it. You don't want a scared pup, but you also don't want your pup to walk all over you! For example, when my puppy tried to hump my wife(an act of dominance) I had my wife grab the puppy and hump her back. It's odd but it really worked. Of course the puppy had to submit and the behavior ended quickly! Go to the park and you will see the dogs in a pack doing it to each other(as long as one isn't in heat), and if you watch closely you can figure out just what their chain of command is for that day.

Long of the short of it, try different things and find out what works best. Combine that with a good puppy class and you will be on your way to having your best friend love his new home!!

Dog Health Questions: Can dog's training really solve things ?

i have a 5 months female german shepperd she doesnt bark at all
she makes sounds wt means she can but she dont want to .. i will
send her to someone who trains watchdogs will she learn barking on command ? < this place is police force's dog training >

Clicker Dog Training - Getting Started Clicker Training

Recommended Answer:
your dog isn't a dog- it's a baby. it's the equivalent of a 4 year old child. would you expect your 4 year old human kid to fend off intruders with a gun??

let the dog grow up, and in the mean time, take it to puppy class. when that's over, you can enroll TOGETHER in a class for protection training, of that's what you want to do.

ALWAYS train your own dog- NEVER hire someone to do it for you. it's YOUR dog and you need to train it to respect you and listen to you.

Dog Training Explained

  • She will grow up - right now she's a baby.

German Shepherds are extremely intelligent and work-oriented. If she realizes that someone actually wants her to bark, she most likely will when it's time. That would be my guess, anyway. If she doesn't, she may be to soft a dog, and you may need another one for whatever guard work is at hand.

I would never just send a dog out for training - you need to be an active participant and a partner. Not only that, but she is very young, and you need to be extremely careful that someone is not hired to rush her, or treat her harshly - and some training facilities certainly can.

You need to be responsible for her treatment, and be there while it's being done - and be by her side. GSD's are a working partner, not an appliance to be retooled, and very sensitive. Please watch over her.

  • If any medical issues are ruled out, then you may have a dog who is less barky than others. I say may have, because the dog's behaviors can change between this age and a year old.

You mentioned you are sending the dog off for police training. The best police or guard dogs are ones who have a higher prey drive. I knew a man who professionally trained these dogs. He selected through litters for dogs who showed strong potential. If your dog doesn't have this aptitude naturally, you are not going to get the results you want. That being said, be careful who you send your dog to for this kind of training. Some people use abuse to try and draw out aggressive behavior in a dog. Stay away from these kind of trainers. The trainers should be willing to let you watch how they train. If not, beware.

  • IF your puppy doesn't bark yet it may be either due to her young age or that she may have some reason for the delay, check with a vet.
The German Shepard by breeding is a watch dog, she may just be slow to develop that trait in her yet. It will happen if you are patient. If you want to know if this is on track just ask the vet you are using .

  • She is still a puppy. The only training that she should be having is puppy obedience school, which you should take her to.
Very few dogs will be suitable for Police Force Training and she needs to be evacuated after she has been obedience trained and is older. It is never a good thing to Shutzhund train a family pet.

  • Sending your dog away for training is not a good move. It's you who needs to learn how to train your dog so you need to be present. Get a trainer in to teach you.

Your dog is a puppy, she'll find her voice in time and then you will wish she would shut up.

  • Sure it does! You can start with some basic obedience training. Obedience training helps your dog see you as her leader. This, http://dogtime.com/basic-commands-obedie… will get you started.

    Have fun!

  • Has your dog gone to the vet, and had her throat checked out.

  • The first and most important basic training is to teach him to do his business outside the house.
This will require a lot from you first. You have to take him out every couple of hours and if (or rather when) he does it inside, you scold the dog using a newspaper and hitting at the floor next to where he did it. Be firm and then take him outside immediately. Also when you feel he's gonna do it, scold him and take him out immediately. I know it's tiring and boring, but worth it at the end. You might want to reward the dog when he finally succeeds by giving him a bone or sthg to munch at.
The second basic training is to teach him to eat only twice: breakfast and dinner. At the beginning, you'll have to offer lunch too, then gradually decrease the amount till it becomes only one main meal besides a light breakfast.
The third basic training is to teach the dog to obey you. So the first thing is to teach him to "sit", then to "come", then to bring the ball etc.
I hope you have a garden. Your life will be much easier.
    Good Luck

  • 1. Never let the dog on your bed or couch because they think they have dominated you if you let them.
    2. Never give them human food, they will stop eating their food and will always bug you when you have food in your hands.
    3. Buy pee wee pads so they don't pee and crap everywhere.
    4. When you take the dog out for a walk, make sure they dont walk ahead of you or behind, always next to you. When they are ahead they are dominating and when they are behind they are scared when they are beside, it's exactly where they need to be.
    5. Before walking out of your house for a walk, make sure you walk out first, dont ever let the dog walk out first. If they walk out first, they think it's ok to walk out whenever they want but when u walk out ahead of them, that teaches them they are not allowed to run out unless it's with you.
    6. When you teach the dog demands such attack, stay, sit etc..teach him in another language so he can only listen to u and not anyone else who just says the word.

Dog Health Questions: Dog training question?

I have a 7 month old Brittany spaniel and he does not listen to save his life we tried training him off the leash and he ran away. Everytime we take him off the leash he bolts to our next door neightboors yard to go play with there dogs. We only have one dog and thats him. I would really like to play fetch with him. and we dont have a yard because we just bought a new house.

Secrets to Dog Training to Stop Your Dog's Behavior Problems

Recommended Answer:
Take your dog to puppy class and get some training. Recall is a very easy thing to train, but if you don't understand what your dog is telling you then you need the training. For now, or until you can get signed up for a class, don't let your dog off the leash. Every time he goes off and you call him and he does not respond, you are enforcing the fact that he is your pack leader. Get a long line (20-30) feet and practice calling him. One call and then reel him in to you. Once he gets to you give him a treat (very small treat; size of a pencil eraser). Do this inside and outside. Never off the leash until he understands he must come when called. Remember ONE CALL, do not repeat, he must come on the first call.
***Go to class, you and your dog will love it!

Protection Dog Training - Frequently Asked Questions

  • It's probably best to start him on a very long lead. Get him to come to you by giving whatever command you choose with a gentle pull on the lead, praising & rewarding him when he comes to you. Start him with short distances then gradually increase the distance. You might consider an obedience class too

  • if your neighbor lets than let your dog play with the other dogs because your dogs enjoys to do that and also maybe if u go on line u can get a trainer to train your dog
i also recommend not to let your dog off the leash because he can run away or hurt someone and i wouldn't take any chances

Dog Health Questions: In Los Angeles, is it illegal for a 14-year-old to have dog training services?

Free? A fee? What are the chances of being "hired"? I'm honestly doing this because I cannot work at shelters since I'm under 16. What alternatives can I do, or is there a minors permit I can obtain somehow?
Thank you!

Teach Your Dog (And Yourself) Some New Tricks With Online Dog Training Programs

Recommended Answer:
Normally you'll need a worker's permit, and sometimes you can't get those until you're 16. Most training services won't hire you unless you're at least 16, but you'll also have to be pet-training certified which means classes and money to get certified. You could do training on your own for neighbors, etc. but I don't recommend that unless you really know what you're doing. Training is not as easy as it seems, and, not to be mean, but most people would probably be offended because you are so young, and wouldn't take you seriously.

A Look At Bird Dog Training

  • check your local police department. if you can't work because you're underage chances are you can't charge for your service.

  • It may or not be illegal. It depends on your local ordinances.

However, I would not allow a 14 year old to train my dog, so even if it not "illegal", you may have a problem finding any customers. I would not take obedience classes, or hire a trainer, who wasn't a certified dog trainer, or animal behaviorist.

Also, you have to accept the fact that you may be held responsible if you give advice to someone, and it leads to their, or their dog's injury.

  • you may have trouble charging people just because of taxes. i don't know if legally you can be taxed.
you may want to check with the local police or even your school guidance counselor.
can you VOLUNTEER at a shelter?

Dog Health Questions: Anyone tried private dog training?

We have two dogs, one is a male hound mix who is about a year and a half and the other is a female who is about 9 months shes a beagle mix and lately shes gotten way more aggressive then we are comfortable with,we have a 3 year old that we keep her away from but I'm pregnant and I really just want to give the dog to someone who can devote full time to working with her but my husband wants to try private dog training, shes aggressive to the other dog,she has food aggression,if their running or playing ball together and he gets too close and she doesnt like it she will growl and snap at him and anytime she gets upset with him really get aggressive with him, shes also gotten a little aggressive with us before.I wish my husband would just get rid of her but he really really wants to try the training and its so expensive that I dont know if its worth it.Anyone tried this?

Dog Training Career - How to Become a Dog Trainer

Recommended Answer:
The dog doesn't respect you. Neither you nor your husband are acting like the pack leader and she has taken the position instead. Private dog training can help if you have someone who will work WITH you in teaching you how to be a pack leader. The trainer can't do anything if you aren't willing to make the effort, and as long as you are scared or dislike the dog, it will know because dogs are great at reading emotions like that.

There is a great deal of dog training that can be done. Cesar Millan has many books available and you can also check out Victoria Stilwell if you don't like his methods, both are on animal planet and you can learn more about training through them.

Dog Training: Tips and Tricks the Professionals Use

  • First of all I would rather suggest joining a dog club. It is less expensive, you only pay a annual fee and not per lesson and also your dog gets to socialize with other dogs and to me that seems really important in your situation.
Secondly my guess is that when you got this beagle puppy she was so cute that you gave her much more attention that the other dog. You probably, without knowing, did things that gave her the impression that she is more important. Now she considers herself as the leader, and she will fight and do anything to maintain that important role.
Here's what you need to do: you must be the leader of both your dogs. Do these four things consistently:
    1. Before you feed them - eat something, let them see you do that. Then first give the male dog his food, and then the beagle.
    2. When you leave the house - ignore them both, just walk out, do not say goodbye.
    3. When you come back in - ignore them for 5 minutes. Then greet them, first the male then the female.
    4. Always when you do anything with them - first the male then the female. In that way you establish yourself as their leader and you establish the older dog as the leader of them.

Dog Health Questions: What is Dog Training?

I know there are different training methodologies and styles. What I am wondering is what exactly IS dog training? When does it start? When does it end? Is it for the dog or the owner? Is it for both? Who needs training more, the dog or the owner?

Please understand, I'm not asking about housebreaking or crate training. I'm asking about other types. I'm also not looking for answers to debate clicker training versus all positive training methods. I'm more interested in the underlying concept of dog training as a whole.

Traditional Dog Training Versus Positive Reinforcement Dog Training - A Comparison

Recommended Answer:
Training begins in the litter box, and ends the day the dog dies. We start by giving mom and nature a little help when the pups are only three days old with ENS.
http://www.breedingbetterdogs.com/achiev…
And then we start with socialization, then introductions, then new skills, and finally skill maintenance.
Unlike our children we cannot set our dogs down in front of a blackboard and give them a lecture and expect them to learn. Instead we show a dog what we want and expect it to remember it. So when someone says their dog is a really fast learner, what they are really saying is that their dog has a good memory.
Over a lifetime I have watched dog training evolve in many many ways. When I see someone saying "oh, that is so mean" or "that device is so cruel", I smile and think to myself "you don't want to ever see how we did it 50 years ago then if you that is bad". Almost without fail new training devices and methods owe their existence to someone thinking that there has to be a better way that is less stressful for the dog than what we are doing.
The classic IMHO is the electric collar that so many think is such a terrible device to use on a dog. The reality is that the field trial dog of today is a far softer dog than what was around when I first started in the game. We can train dogs today even to the level of National Champions, that would have never been able to stand up to the rigors of upper level training 50 years ago.
Dog training is a science, and I hope people never stop wondering "what if" and trying new ways.

edit:
"So why is it when people have an issue or problem with a dog they say "But I took it to training and it still does X"?

Why doesn't "training per se" fix problem x....?"

Because the owner forgot all about the "skill maintenance" part of the deal.

Dog Training Online - Inside Secrets of Professional Dog Trainers Revealed

  • Schutzhund is the pinacle of dog training.

You have obedience training which is training your dog basic commands like sit and stay etc.

For more serious dog trainers you can go right up to Schutzhund.

Heres a link to have a look at, Your probably right to ask if training is for dog or owner but i would say it takes both, the dog has to be trained to learn your commands and you need to learn how to be able to communicate this to you dog.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schutzhund

  • Training your dog, to me, means establishing and teaching rules and boundaries that your dog must obey. It starts as soon as you first come in contact with your dog, and I do not believe training ever ends. There will always be new situations and circumstances that will arise.

It is for both the dog and the owner. The owner needs to learn how to communicate effectively with their dog, and their dog needs to learn their boundaries. Not only does it make for an obedient dog, but a stable one as well.

I think the owner needs more training than the dog. Too many people get so frustrated with their dogs for "not getting it", when in reality, the owner simply doesn't know how to teach their dog what to do. An owner can never blame an untrained dog for being disobedient, but can only blame themselves for not putting in the effort to change the dog's behavior.

  • Dog training is how you get the dog to do what you need it to do consistantly. This covers everything from basic manners to specialized training.

Edit: "But I took it to training and it still does X"? You can take a dog (or a child) to a lot of things, if you don't actually teach it (train it) it will continue to do what it has always done. Too often the issue is the owner (parent).

One of my standard "tricks" when a new client who is an obedience class failure comes to me is to bet them $20 I can have their dog reliably trained to sit (or down, or walk nicely on a leash) in 10 minutes... I've lost ONCE (smart dog!) .. after the dog is successfully performing I ask the owner.. "Now, would you like to learn how to train your dog?". The onus is on the trainer/owner to figure out which tools will work best for each dog to facilitate learning. (just as some humans learn best by reading, some by watching, and some by doing).

  • It is a GOOD question! Training effects more than just the dog's behavior. When a dog is secure with his owner being the 'pack leader' he is less stressed. He doesn't have to worry about leading and decision making, that is what the leader does. A dog is also happier when he know what is expected of him and what is not allowed. An untrained dog (and by untrained I do not mean professionally untrained) is never quite sure if or when he will be scolded or punished, he is never quite sure what he did wrong, if anything at all, nor does he understand when he is doing something good. A trained dog is safer because he is less likely to run into the street, wander from home, annoy the 'wrong' person, be aggressive towards kids, strangers or other animals. A trained dog is far easier to live with than an a dog that is out of control. The training itself is a bonding experience between the dog and the owner! I know that you didn't want to touch on this subject, but a dog trained with praise will obey because he want to please his owner, not because he fears the owner's punishment. Yes, usually it is the owner that needs to be trained in what does and does not work with dogs and why. A dog that won't come when called is a dog that will always have very little freedom for his own good. An owner that has a dog that waits patiently 1 or 2 feet from the door is a more relaxed and happier owner. I was at a relatives house the other night and every time someone went in or out you heard "don't let the dog get out!" or "Someone hold onto the dog!' I have an 8 month old puppy and he doesn't try to 'escape' as people come and go. He waits patiently whether someone is entering or I am letting the cat out. He does not go through the door until I say 'okay'. My dog is less likely to 'get loose' then the other dog, therefore, my dog is safer. I am not saying that I have a perfectly trained dog, but you get what you put into it. But first you need a little training yourself to train your dog effectively. That training may be formal training, reading a book on training, getting tips from a breeder or other dog owner and some of it is common sense. That is just how I feel about training based on my experiences as a dog owner and what I have learned over the years (some of it by finding out the hard way what doesn't work) reading and obedience classes.

  • If the person knows something about training, then it starts the minute they get the pup or dog. If not then it won't really start until they work with a trainer to teach them how, so that will be dependent on the person. And just by that fact you can see training is more for the person and will depend on what and IF they are willing and open to learning. I feel like I know something about training, have a clear idea what I'm about. Even so I find there is always something new to learn, a new tool or new technique, new thoughts on behaviors. No two dogs ever learn the exact same way, motivated or react the same or have the same temperament, so a wide range of different methods is good to know for tailoring training to an individual dog. So the learning for the human shouldn't really end and in reality, neither does the training for the dog. It's an ongoing thing for both, as it should be in getting a dog to follow commands consistently.

*** I'm with Tom I on the electric collar. It's a new tool, hardly harmful but how many people do you see on here that have closed minds about it? It's a matter of the person being open to learning new methods and tools. A pity people are so closed minded they can't see when a new thing is actually better! Same for a prong collar or a halti type...you fit the tools and methods to the dog and the behavior.

  • Dog Training is a way of life- you teach your dogs things every day, whether you intend to or not. I have a friend who, every time she puts her hair in a ponytail, her dog runs to the bathroom and lies down next to the tub. Did she train this? Not intentionally, but the dog learned that this meant my friend was getting ready to soak in the tub.

My dogs learned that when the tv goes off, if it's during the day, they are all going with us, if it's at night, it's bed time. I didn't train it, they learned it.

So, dog training starts the day you bring a dog home and ends the day the dog leaves-

    Hope this answered your question.

  • Heres my opinion
Owners are usually the ones that need more TRAINING
They start from the time they are born to the time they pass away.
Dog training is actually what I like to call owner training. Its methods that teach the owner how to handle the animal when they behave or misbehave. Usually according to owners we see, certain behaviors they dont like are natural for all dogs. It just depends on where the owner lives, how much room they have, how often they are willing to walk their dog, or spend time with them. It depends on how often the animal is socialized as well.
I am stocked full of information like you wouldnt believe on dog training and the essentials . My email is on my profile if you have any more questions or would like a fuller description of just about anything

  • Jessica's nailed it.

Training is more for humans. Training is a way for humans to learn how to control their dogs.

Training is a way for humans to learn how teach their dogs what is acceptable behavior and what is unacceptable behavior.

The owner that understands this knows that training is not static -- it is a dynamic process that never ends.

  • *What I am wondering is what exactly IS dog training?
Learning how to teach a desired behavior. As well as teaching that a particular behavior is undesirable and not allowed.
    *When does it start?
From the moment you get a dog. Not all training is good. Teaching a dog at all is training, it's whether you teach them good or bad that is the issue.
    *When does it end?
Never, you and the dog are learning constantly.
*Is it for the dog or the owner? Both. You have to learn yourself how to teach the dog.
    *Is it for both? Absolutely.
*Who needs training more, the dog or the owner?
The owner. If you learn how to teach (the right way), you can teach the dog anything.

Ugh, used teach one too many times....

  • Not being a true "doggy person", I can only speak for what goes on in my life with my dogs.

My dogs are in no way trained in any way other than they know what I will and won't tolerate. (Same as my children)

They come when I whistle, they sit, they "leave it", they don't jump up, lick, bite and numerous things that I don't want them to or want them to.

I believe the owners are the ones that need to be trained to train the dog.

I know for a fact that if I wanted my dogs to be better trained then I need to be trained.

  • Dog training is for the dog and the handler(owner). Imagine that the dog is a confused Chinese child that you have adopted.

Would you allow a child to remain in a confused state without allowing her to enter your world?. Dog training opens the door to a new world for your dog, they enjoy training and learning how to communicate.

The training starts when a dog arrives with you and continues for the rest of its life. I use play training methods, I never scold or shout at a dog when it does something wrong. I praise my dog when it pleases me and I use toys or treats for lures and rewards.

At the outset the owners must learn and concentrate on the correct commands and body language. Commands must be concise, you should not tell your dog to sit and the next time tell it to sit down, or give a different command at any time if you want the same response.

Dogs will never understand a vast amount of words, however with training they will understand your commands.

I have always gone to obedience classes and then progressed to agility or heelwork to music. It is not fair to buy a puppy if you have no intention of introducing it to the outside world.
I adore dogs and I think that I would be frustrated if there was no intercommunication between me and my dogs. Imagine how the lack of communication will frustrate our beloved pets.

As far as I am concerned, clicker training is not open to debate.CLICKERS ARE THE KINDEST, QUICKEST AND THE BEST METHOD OF TRAINING.

Dog Health Questions: Do all of these dog training shows seem routine?

Once you watch a few episodes, they all start doing the same thing. The same tricks and tips are used.

If this is the case, why can't people train their own dogs before they get this bad?

Find Out How To Prevent Your Dog From Becoming Too Aggressive By Using Some Dog Training Skills

Recommended Answer:
The problem with all of the dog training shows on air is that the trainers are usually novice (less than 9 years under their belt), and are "made for tv". Typically, an experienced dog trainer will not use the same techniques on every dog because every dog's problem is different.
Dog training shows are also simply entertainment, and should not be used to train your own dog, especially for aggression issues. If you have any sort of behavioral issues with your dog, you should consult LIVE with a trainer in your area. No book, tv show, or online consultation can be used to correctly train your dog in the way that's best for him/her.

Dog Training How Tos - Laying a Solid Foundation

  • Because so many people do not do their "homework" before bringing a dog home in the first place. There are many many good training books out there, but people are too lazy to read and apply the lessons to their canine friends.

  • Actually the trainers are different and the dogs are the same, ruined by the owners and almost makes it impossible to tell if a real trainer is doing the right thing or not.

Dog Health Questions: What's the best dog training tip you ever got?

Whether from a trainer or from your own dog, is there a specific instance that you can recall that changed something about the way you train for the better?

5 Tips to Choose Effective Dog Training Courses

Recommended Answer:
With my first dog I didn't really understand the mentality. So when she had an accident in the house I had scolded her for it and spanked her bottom. It was a complete opposite of how I usually treated her - I was very affectionate, and spoiled her unmercilessly.

For a few days after that incident she was very shy and timid, even overly submissive. I felt SO horrible. I talked to my vet and a trainer and they instructed me on the CORRECT way to handle potty problems.

With the positive reinforcement I've never gotten angry or had to raise my voice, lay a hand or anything negative to my girls and I still got amazing results - not only in potty training but with everything.

I hurt her and because of it, it broke my heart. I totally learned my lesson!

Dog Training: Tips and Tricks the Professionals Use

  • Reward your dog with affection, not treats.

  • I learned that not every method works on every dog. and patience patience patience!

  • Yes, it is 'train in the moment'. I found many times i was expecting a certain performance from my dogs based on what we had worked on in the past and where I expected my dog to be in his training now and in the future. By not training in the moment I was allowing myself to be frustrated and get emotional while training. It was damaging the training i was doing and not productive. Dogs live in the moment, we need to also train in the moment.

  • I think the best things I have learned and am still learning is to better understand my dogs behavior. Knowing WHY they do something is really beneficial when training my dog.

  • A friend told me that a good way to train a dog not to bark for nothing is.. Put a few pebbles in a tin can, and when he barks shake them. He will get the message.

  • YES.
If you want to teach a dog anything...it must have instant communication.
If your dog does well-instantly (Nano seconds)give them praise after they do well...any delay ruins their connection.
That's why so many times miss-understanding comes between you and your dog. If you wait to punish or reward even a few seconds after the fact...the lesson is lost.
This is THE #1 problem in housebreaking-people punish the dog after they have found an accident-minutes or even hours after the fact, and the poor dog has no idea what the heck your talking about.
People expect dogs to understand English, but we're not expected to understand bark.

  • Nothing In Life is Free positive training method.

  • Learning to understand the dogs way of thinking and how they view things. Cesar Milan "Dog Whisperer" is extremely helpful and show you how to view dog behavior. It makes alot of sense and his techinques work better than anything,

  • Every dog is an individual and needs to be treated as such.
What works for one does not works for all. You must tailor your training routines and methods for each dogs individual personalities and tempermant.
I have a female Weim who is a hard hunter and very motivated to hunt. She is strong willed and edgy but very willing to work. Sometimes it takes a few times for her to understand what you want. Once she does she will do it until she drops.
My male is faster to get the idea of what you want. It takes less time to get him to learn something. But he hates to play fetch. A few tosses and he is bored and wanting to do something else.
    Same breed but differnet attitudes.

  • I learned that everything in a dog comes from their pack drive. When I learned and understood that concept, everything changed about my training. Communication between me and my dog became crystal clear and I learned to anticipate his next move before he even thought about it. Now, I am a much better trainer because of it. I am a fair leader and the dog knows EXACTLY what he will be corrected for and when. My dog works for me in a happier way, eager to please the pack leader and KNOWS in his head that no matter what, I will always be fair with him and never correct him for something that he does not know how to do. At the same time he knows and understands that the hammer WILL fall when he chooses to ignore a command that he already knows. Perfect harmony and balance.

  • Crate Training: You can't use a crate on a dog less than 4 months old because before that age the pup does not have conscious control of its bowels or bladder.

(The Humane Society of the United States published a request that dog owners NOT follow the directions of the so-called "Dog Whisperer" Milan because some of his techniques are archaic and unsafe for the dogs. Example: he once showed viewers how he could subdue a dog by kneeling on its neck until blood loss to the brain made it pass out.)

  • talking to my dog like she was a human being, it made her learn so fast, i started talking to her like a human since the night i got her at 7 weeks old. when she was alive she behaved so well because she knew what i was saying.

  • Patience...lol

  • My trainer recommended a Gentle Leader for my dog who pulls horribly on his leash. It worked in two days. Best tip I ever got.

Some Less Obvious Benefits of Dog Training - Help For Owners of Older Dogs

  • So many aspects to training a dog that it is hard to put it all here. To the 2 things you mention, jumping on furniture and jumping on people; DO NOT let it start! It jumps on the chair or sofa, quickly sweep it of with your arm while loudly saying "OFF." That is sweep it off, not throw it off, you want it to be firm and uncomfortable but not injurious. For jumping on people bump it in the chest with your knee as it jumps up, again "OFF." That is a bump, not a kick. If it falls down every time it jumps on people/furniture it will stop jumping on people/furniture. Barking is harder, is it excited barking, alarm barking, fear barking? Mostly if you remain calm when the barking starts and just muzzle him gently with your hand and say "hush" you can minimize_some_of the barking; getting it to stop quicker after it starts, but barking is normal.

  • teach him from day one that your the boss, no means no!, and teach him all the basic tricks like sit, lie down, wait, paw and any others you fancy, always keep with same rule, dont say one day he can go on the sofa then the next day he cant, this will only confuse him! Hope this has helped :)
