Dog Health Questions: Would a Old English Sheepdog be the right dog for us?

Here's what we can do (exercise etc.)
-2 miles walk a day, along with at least half an hour play session a night, probably more.
-He/she would never be left alone during the day or night, he would go to my dad's work which has a total of three people and plenty of space and fields
-We do have cats, and will raise correctly
-Socialise well with everyone and everything!!
-Do nice long walks at the weekend too
-We have three members of family alltogether
-we will do puppy/dog training classes, we've found some really good one's.
-we would like to rescue, but if we went to a breeder we know some very reputable ones.

I really like flyball and agility etc.

I used to show a couple of them and I told myself I would never groom one again. Don't listen to the poodle person. Shaving a dog down is the worst thing you can do. Their coat helps insulate them in the summer and aids them to stay cool! If you shave a dog, you expose their skin to the sun and there are multiple problems that can occur there. You HAVE to make sure that this dog is disciplined as they sense very easily who is the leader and who is weak. They can be a very dominant breed but good luck!

• That sounds like a great plan, but you must remember that the Old English breed is a very high maintenance breed of dog. And unless you plan on shaving to skin the must be brushed thoroughly every day to prevent matting.

Dog Health Questions: How do I get my dog to stop humping?

Our dog is a small havanese dog. He is between the ages of 2-6, and if course, a male. We are sure that our dog does not think he is higher than the family members. My mother is the highest above of him, my grandma is next, and I am just a little over him. And my sister is down below. We are going to get his testes removed, I forgot the name of the surgery. We think it will make him calmer and he will lessen the humping. We have actually tried this stuff from a vet, we plugged it in and it's supposed to release calming stuff into the air around the dog. Which then makes the dog stop barking and act calmer, in fact our dog stopped barking at sounds and stuff, but did not get any calmer! And a very serious problem now and before is that he is humping me, my sister, and her friends. It's getting a little out of hand now, I do watch many dog training shows and research lots. I have taught my dog many tricks, by the way I've been yelling out a very sharp noise like. "AH!" or you know from the show "It's me or the dog". We only do that when he is doing something bad, but he just never listens when we do it when he's humping.

Please answer this question, we are going to get him some surgery done on his testes, but we still need to find out some way if the surgery doesn't work. Thanks!

I have a female Siberian Husky. She is an independent and very high energy dog. Here are some things that may help:
1. When your dog has her mouth on you, it is important NOT to jerk away. Jerking away will cause you to get scratched. More importantly, sudden and quick movements may make your dog think it is a fun game and reinforce her biting/mouthing behavior. At worst, quick movements may instigate your dog's prey drive and cause her to get aggressive. Instead, stay still and either give a No command or yelp as a puppy might do to her litter-mates when they are playing too rough. I use the yelp for puppies who are still learning and for accidental biting.

2. Yelping will startle your dog and cause her to release her mouth. Quickly follow that up by redirecting her onto a toy. You don't need to shove it in, just put it there for her to bite on.

3. Hand-feed her
You can try and teach her some bite inhibition. Hand-feed her some kibble one by one. If she bites too hard while trying to get at her food, yelp in a high pitch, and ignore her for a few seconds. Then start feeding her again. This way she learns that biting hard can hurt humans and when she does that, the food and attention stops. Hand-feeding is also good for bonding and establishing your leadership.

4. Time-out. If your dog continues with her bad behavior after you have told her to stop, then say "time-out" and remove her to a time-out area (a safe but boring room, e.g. laundry room). Leave her in there for a couple of minutes and let her out. If she starts up again, non-mark her (ack, ack), and say time-out and put her back in time-out. This time lengthen the duration to about 10-15 minutes. Note that if your dog stops the bad behavior, make sure to praise her a lot and give her good treats. Keep this up and your dog will learn that certain behaviors get her rewards while others get her into a boring room with nothing to do.

5. NILIF program. A great way to establish yourself as leader is through the control of resources. Don't give anything to your dog (including pets and affection) unless she does something for you first. For example ask her for a "sit" before you give her food, toys, or freedom.

6. Obedience training. Try and do some obedience training sessions everyday. Get a good positive reinforcement obedience book, and practice with her for short sessions (10-15 minutes) every day. This will help establish you as a leader, improve your bond with your dog, exercise your dog's mind, and give you good tools that you can use to help control her in the house.

7. Exercise her a bunch. Make her work for all of her food by using interactive food toys (e.g. Kongs). Play controlled games with her, with set rules (e.g. flirt pole, soccer, fetch).

I know you said you couldn't afford training and want to do it yourself, I suggest you call around to different trainers and see if their is a payment arrangement that can be made, or call shelters, pet stores or your local 4 H to see if they have any free obiedience training available. I'm getting a Golden Retriever mix this thursday. The only dog training available I think is Petsmart, which is 70.00 an hour individually, and 50.00 an hour group. The fostering owner rescued her and said she needed to be trained. She doesn't do anything bad, and if you say "Eh!" she will stop what she's doing. But she doesn't know anything like "Sit" or "Stay". We aren't poor, but we don't want to spend all of this money on this. How can I just teach her myself or something? Any suggestions?

  If one of my adopters was to breach the contract they signed, I would be taking the dog back asap. You would unfortunately then be blacklisted from adopting again.
  
  ETA: Don't really care what you think you saw for training prices, you are completely wrong. Or you could be trying to make excuses for not spending money on training. Either way, if you can't afford the training, you can't afford the dog. It costs money to own a dog, whether you train it or not. How do you plan on paying for heartworm preventative? Vaccinations? Goldens need coat maintenance-how will you pay for that?

i have a chi weenie, female about 4 months old. i have her housebroken for the most part except she wakes up like around 3 am or so and goes to potty in the house. i don't crate her never have any of our dogs and they've all done just fine. she sleeps with me, but our other dogs have always woke us in the morning to go outside once they were housebroke. she however, will not. is there something i can do to get her to start waking me in the mornings. she goes to the door when she wants out the rest of the day its just the morning thing. and also, how do you get them to stop barking at other dogs. when i walk her if she sees another dog out she wont use the bathroom she just constantly barks. she was raised around other dogs so why does she bark at any new ones. i am baffled here never had this kind of dog before and never had these issues with our other dogs (pekengnese and shitzu).

Dog Health Questions: Dog Training, Do ultrasonic sounds work?

I have a very big puppy (if you don't believe me check out my other question it has pictures). He gets very excited to see people and jumps on them. I've tried a few things to correct this and people have been okay with it. But I'm not! He could hurt someone or they could just claim he did and he could be taken away. He's on a leash but he looks like a pit so when he jumps on someone or pulls me it could scare someone. I do allow him off the leash in legal areas to do so and he does comes to me but when other people come around he just has to greet them.
I'm considering getting something called Pet Zoom to fix this issue. It sends out a sound only animals can hear. Has anyone ever tried something like this? It's a pain free training method.

Don't waste your money on this type of training. They're expensive and they don't have the best of training either.

Best way to find a good trainer is to contact a local obedience club and ask for referrals. They will tell you of people many have used and trust and KNOW to be experienced and good at what they do. It will also me much less expensive.

Added: All the people I called in the yellow pages wanted no less than $75 for 6 weeks and some were $150+, including the "pet supply stores", but the trainer I found, thru a local dog training club, is only $50 for a 7 week class. She's a breeder and has been showing and titling her breed for 25+ yrs... lots of experience at less cost... Trust me, do your research!

• The first and most important basic training is to teach him to do his business outside the house.
  This will require a lot from you first. You have to take him out every couple of hours and if (or rather when) he does it inside, you scold the dog using a newspaper and hitting at the floor next to where he did it. Be firm and then take him outside immediately. Also when you feel he's gonna do it, scold him and take him out immediately. I know it's tiring and boring, but worth it at the end. You might want to reward the dog when he finally succeeds by giving him a bone or sthg to munch at.
  The second basic training is to teach him to eat only twice: breakfast and dinner. At the beginning, you'll have to offer lunch too, then gradually decrease the amount till it becomes only one main meal besides a light breakfast.
  The third basic training is to teach the dog to obey you. So the first thing is to teach him to "sit", then to "come", then to bring the ball etc.

Dog Health Questions: Dog training: aggression?

I have a 2 year old Australian shepherd mix, and 98% of the time she is a very sweet dog. The only problem is the other 2%. She is possessive over things to the point where she growls or even snaps at family members who get too close, even if they are not trying to take the object away from her. We got her from the SPCA when she was 5 or 6 weeks old, and she has known nothing but love her entire life. Dog Training - A Systematic Approach

• Well you can always try the dog whisperer.
  Aussies require a firm owner and lots and lots of physical and mental exercise. Herding dogs are very intelligent and active, they must have a leader, She's doing this because she's always been allowed to, When you want something she has, take it while replacing it with something else she likes, do this repeatedly with lots of praise when she does not growl, give her a firm "no" when she growls, but don't back off. You might also give her a treat when she does not growl. Eventually you should be able to take anything without replacing with something else.


• You can help train this baby to learn that people taking her food or bone etc is a GOOD thing.
  Start at feeding time. Pick up her empty bowl, put a few kibbles in her bowl. When she finishes, put a hand full more in....Your hand goes over to her bowl, you can be sitting next to her as she feeds. This gets her use to your hand near her food, and that it is a very good thing,,,,it means food.
  Later, you can approach her bowl -while she is eating, pick it up and drop a piece of chicken or other wonderful treat into it,, and put it back down. If she might still bite your hand, use a broom stick to help get it safely.
  
  A behaviorist from the APDT (http://www.apdt.com) can help you with this methodology.
  
  Helping the dog learn that humans approaching her food is a good thing. If you make it negative with hits etc, you will increase her need to protect her possessions from humans.
  
  This behavior modification should be accompanied with some "no free lunch" exercieses - where your dog must earn ever pleasure in life.....this will help humans have a higher status or leadership position with in the Pack.
  
  This type of resource guarding is typical, and can be corrected with desensitization and counter conditioning.

Some dogs are just prone to aggresion..Also you could be helping this behavior unknowingly by letting her get her way. • Here is a website that has lots of info, basically a dog that does not respect you will be possessive. If you were boss/Alpha she would not do it. Obed training can help and if it is one toy or type of toy throw them out. Never take a dog removed from the litter b4 8 weeks, it often leads to biting problems.


• Your statement "she has known nothing but love her entire life" actually is the most telling.
  
  Dogs are not people and so don't do gratitude for love given. Dogs need boundaries and rules and thrive best in situations where they know what the parameters are. This doesn't mean that you can't give the dog love, but first it needs to understand what the rules are in your house.
  
  Do you have kids? Do they have rules and boundaries? Do they try and challenge them occasionally? What is your response? Most parents reinforce what the boundaries are. Perhaps they ground the child, or take away the toy, etc. Doesn't mean you love the child any less. The same concept needs to apply to the dog.
  
  So you need to control the dog's access to toys. You give her one, you take it away. She gets to play with it for as long as you allow and then remove it. Your dog must understand that the toys (or what ever) actually belong to you.
  
  The other problem that I see often is that dogs are NOT getting enough exercise so they tend to release energy in bad behaviors so please make sure your dog is getting consistant and adequate exercise. Opening the door to the backyard is NOT enough because a dog will not do laps on its own.


• DO NOT FLICK HIM ON THE NOSE!!!! that will make things worse, have her on a choak chain and then when she starts to growl, give her a correction.

Dog Training Schools - How to Pick a Good School

Recommended Answer:
1. DO NOT punish your dog, he doesn't know it's wrong, and he won't know what you're punishing him for. He needs to go out more. If you catch him IN THE ACT, make a loud noise to distract him, take him outside, and praise him lots for going where he's supposed to go. Do not let him see you cleaning it up in the house. If he IS vindictive, and it sounds like he's dominant and spoiled anyway, he could be doing it just to make you clean it up. Put him in another room or outside, and then clean the poop. Most importantly, though, get him on a regular schedule appropriate to his size, including (but not limited to) going after meals/waking up/going on a walk.

2. Basic dominance techniques:
- Own his food. Make him work for it, and don't give it to him until he's in a calm submissive state. Also, you should eat before the dog. The pack leaders eat first.
-Always go through doors first. Dogs view whoever goes through the door first as the pack leader.
-Make it clear that you are the boss. Not abusively, but with calm assertive energy make it clear that you expect to be obeyed. Set rules/boundaries/limitation (and ideally, agree on them as a family). Don't want him in your room? Own the room. Block the doorway and don't let him in unless he's invited.
-Absolutely DO NOT let him on your bed or on your sofa (or lap? is he a lap dog?) unless YOU invite him. And for a while, until he realized you're the boss, I wouldn't recommend letting him up there at all.
-One controversial method that we use with our very calm submissive dog: grab his face and stare into his eyes until he looks away. The alpha never looks away first. This works with us because she has not one little once of aggression or dominance in her sweet body, and it just reinforces our position, especially when she's acting up. Be careful playing this game, though, unless you're sure of the outcome.

#1 absolute best way to assert your dominance: go on a primal walk, at least 30 minutes twice a day! Make sure he's calm submissive before you go out the door, and he waits calmly for you to go out first. Make sure he walks on a loose leash, next to you or behind you, focused on the walk and not wandering around doing whatever he wants.

ETA: crate training is also a good way to get "back to the basics" house breaking. Dogs don't like to go where they sleep. But it doesn't sound like you're the primary owner here, so I don't really know if you could implement that well.

  Discipline should be a sharp No and taken outside immediately. Putting him in a crate defeats its purpose (a crate is supposed be a secure and enjoyable place). A crate is not used for punishment.
  
  Do not do an alpha roll because you believe he's trying to be dominant (he's not) and do not rub his nose in the feces.
  
  ETA: Your dog is picking up on your vibrations, which is why he automatically goes to his crate. Apparently, for whatever reason, he thinks the crate is punishment.
  
  If it doesn't bother your mom to clean up after her (since she's the primary care giver) dog , why should it bother you as long at it submits to you?

We paper trained him at first due to the weather, now he goes outside- whenever we catch him trying to relieve himself in the house, we pick him up and take him out.
We are now trying to get him to stop nagging our feet, he likes to run after and playfully bite our feet. This has been a challenge. He is stubborn but is learning quick.
Good luck with your pup- I didn't want to start over again, but the pain from our loss was so intense, it was the only way to help us through the emptiness in our hearts and home.

• I recommend the book and video, "Good Owners, Great Dogs" by Brian Kilcommons. Brian is a very well known trainer, and his methods place heavy emphasis on kindness, firmness and reward, and not on repetitive exercises, loud voice and punishment. The book is good, but in combination with the video, really gives you a fairly comprehensive overview of training your puppy how to be obedient, and to stop doing things you find unacceptable.
  
  Obedience classes are even better. Check with your vet or local kennel club. Puppies are allowed to enroll as soon as their vaccinations are complete, and it doesn't matter if your dog is purebred or just a mutt.

I have a 17 mo. old English Mastiff and he is very well trained on leash. I did it myself with the help of my bf and we were just super consistent with a prong collar always insisting that he walk beside us and making him sit when he didnt and restarting the "heel". We also make him sit to the side when there is someone coming towards us that he might want to meet. That way they can choose whether they want to approach him or not. We call that "sit and greet" and we over pronounce the t in both words. He will now pull himself off to the side and sit and wag because he knows he must do this in order to get the "treat" of meeting someone cute and new to him.
Mastiffs are lazy but they are smart and quick and I have taught mine very easily to sit, stay, down, high five, shake with either paw on command, speak and even hug from a seated position where he puts his paws one at a time on my shoulders. You will get what you expect so expect a lot - similar to how it works with small children.
