Dog Health Questions: Opening a dog business?

Well, I am simply a teenager, and I know it's risky, but I want to give it a shot.

Anyways, I have found myself to be great with dogs. I'm an excellent trainer, all dogs love me, and people love me as well. I just came up with an idea. What if I opened my own dog training and maybe even grooming business?

But obviously since everything has been in-home before, I have no idea what it takes to open an actual business. What type of place should I lease? What should I have there? How much would the estimate cost be?

If you've opened up a business similiar, could you tell me experiences and any tips you'd find helpful?

Thanks!

ps. please don't slam this idea. sure, im young, and it may not happen, but at least if it can happen i will have a plan, right?

Agility Dog Training, Key to a Great Sport

Recommended Answer:
You are lucky that I'm on right now :)

I am 14 (you probably aren't this young) and I've been volunteering at a dog washing salon/groomers for two years. The way I got there was by my contacts. Best friend's aunt opened a dog spa...wanted me to help out...

Do you have any contacts like that? If so, take your dog to training classes and get close to the trainer, then ask HER if maybe you could intern? Or ask her some tips? Something like that would be cool.

Well we had a trainer at my dog washing place, and she set out business cards and it was like a dual partnership. People would come to get their puppies washed...think hey what a misbehaved puppy...see business cards, get referred by store, ect.

OR

People would come for the training, get their dogs nice and dirty, or realise there dog is dirty and hey since they're there, wash their dog. It worked so well until property values got too high and our trainer moved.

Definately get a website. And get some pictures of you with dogs, people saying how great you are, whatever you feel necessary.

And you might want to buy some training videos :) Just watch like Ceasar Millan or something and record his shows.

Also, a dog washing business is SOOOO expensive. A single tub could run you a couple thousand dollars, just the tub, that's it. You'd probably want around 4, maybe even 6, depending what you prefer.

Hey good luck :)

EDIT-- My friend's aunt bought her business from a man who was selling his. This saved her so much money because he left her all of her tubs, supplies, everything.

Control Your Aggressive Dog With These 4 Dog Training Tips

  • I'm in the process of starting a small business. Let me tell you the number 1 thing. . it is EXPENSIVE. The startup costs of even the tiniest business could keep you in debt until business takes off, if it does.

That said, it is smart to wait to make such a large investment, especially if you do not know the basics of starting a business. Community colleges offer courses on start-ups and that may help you get going.

You will need a business license, which I believe you have to be 18 to legally obtain. (They are free, on the IRS website). Other than that, check the library or bookstore on books for starting up a small business.

  • All I can think of is: do you have some sort of Entrepreuner class in your school? I am currently enrolled in a similar class, and it will help you learn how to do literally a *ton* of things involved with owning/operating a business of your own.

Also, consider talking to other people in your town who have opened up their own small businesses. They will have a bunch of helpful information.

  • This isn't a slam, but don't try to open a dog training business. In order to do justice to potential clients you need much more training before you can take money to train dogs.

Try apprenticing with experienced trainers first and in a few years think about opening a training business

  • Every idea has to have a plan. You have dreams and ambitions which is the start. You have to research farther than the answers you will get here.
At your age without business management, dog behavior skills, grooming experience and financial $$$ planing you would be in the dark trying to open your own place right now.
My suggestion would be to get a job at a dog daycare. Most good ones also offer grooming and training classes. You need to learn all you can and that takes time.
Experience is the key to your dreams. You can do it. You have roll up your sleeves and get "slobbered" on first!!

Dog Health Questions: How do I get my dog to stop humping?

Our dog is a small havanese dog. He is between the ages of 2-6, and if course, a male. We are sure that our dog does not think he is higher than the family members. My mother is the highest above of him, my grandma is next, and I am just a little over him. And my sister is down below. We are going to get his testes removed, I forgot the name of the surgery. We think it will make him calmer and he will lessen the humping. We have actually tried this stuff from a vet, we plugged it in and it's supposed to release calming stuff into the air around the dog. Which then makes the dog stop barking and act calmer, in fact our dog stopped barking at sounds and stuff, but did not get any calmer! And a very serious problem now and before is that he is humping me, my sister, and her friends. It's getting a little out of hand now, I do watch many dog training shows and research lots. I have taught my dog many tricks, by the way I've been yelling out a very sharp noise like. "AH!" or you know from the show "It's me or the dog". We only do that when he is doing something bad, but he just never listens when we do it when he's humping.

Please answer this question, we are going to get him some surgery done on his testes, but we still need to find out some way if the surgery doesn't work. Thanks!

A Look At Bird Dog Training

Recommended Answer:
Neutering your dog won't necessarily stop the problem. Dog Humping, believe it or not, is less about sexual stimulance than it is about your dog showing its dominance.

There are three strategies to dealing with it.

1. You can use a negative reinforcement strategy when catching your dog in the act and spray him with a water spray bottle.
2. You can use the Distraction" Strategy
3. You can use the "Ignore" Strategy

All three strategies are explained step by step in detail in this article:
http://www.dog-training-works.com/how-to-stop-dog-humping.html

Check it out. That article provides a great formula for ending this dog behavior problem.

Good Luck!

Dog Training Collars and Harnesses - Making the Proper Selection is Essential to Training Success

  • Honestly, the surgery should take care of the problem. If it doesn't, it would indicate a dominance issue. He would need to be trained to understand that he is not the dominant one.

  • Just wait till after you get him neutered, you may be suprised as that most likely will be the only thing needed.

Dog Health Questions: How are police dogs and seeing and eye dogs trained?

How are police dogs and seeing and eye dogs trained?can i have links to where you got your information from please?

Electronic Dog Training

Recommended Answer:
1. Where do you get the dogs?

The Seeing Eye breeds its own German shepherds, Labrador retrievers and Golden retrievers. Occasionally, boxers and mixed breeds are used.

2. How long does it take to train a dog?

Training a Seeing Eye ) dog is a multi-step process. When the dog is about eight weeks old, it's placed in the home of a volunteer puppy-raiser, where it's taught basic obedience and socialization and given lots of love. When it's about 18 months old, the dog returns to The Seeing Eye and begins a four-month course of training with a sighted instructor. When the dog passes this phase, it's matched with a blind person. The person and the dog then train together, under the supervision of a sighted instructor. Someone training with his or her first dog participates in a 27-day training session. For someone training with a second or subsequent dog, the session lasts 20 days.

The Praise and Reward Dog Training Method

  • it takes many years of experience to train K-9's

You can google the seeing eye puppy program

  • link to www.fidelco.com

Dog Health Questions: Need a little dog training tip.?

today when I was walking my german shepherd (8month old), my neighbor's kids (around 5 i think) came to me and wanted to pat my dog.

afterward, when they were leaving, one of them ran back, and thats when my dog almost launched at her... the dog didn't bite her though.

the girl was well within the dog's attack range, and she was a lot slower than the dog. If the dog wanted to actually attack her, it could have done it.

was that just the dog's instinct to chase things that are moving?

what should I do to get rid that behavior? (my german shepherd is pretty well socialized.. she will let everyone pat her.)

next time if some little kids want to pat the dog, should I put the dog in down position first?

3 Secrets to Dog Training - Immediate Results

Recommended Answer:
You can work with your dog-it was probably protecting. You know how police dogs chase criminals? Just Make her sit, and distract her. When she is behaving treat her. Make sure you say "Shhh" in a firm voice so she knows not to do this. It is something they did on It's me or the Dog. Socialize her a lot. Give her praise, affection, and a lot of exercise. If it doesn't work, get behavioral training.

Dog Training - Why and How to Train Dogs

  • Go to the website: www.dogwhisperer.com and ask Caesar Milan. He can tell you what to do.

  • ur dog was probably scared like that boy was tryin to attack u or the dog. its just doin his job and being protective

    Good luck

  • Hold on to your dog tightly but it is normal for a puppy to do that. They don't like quick movement. It is pretty much instintive for some breeds. like my dachshund.

Dog Health Questions: School for Dog Trainers?

Hi all,

I've been looking for a formal school for Dog Training to attend.

I've inquired into both Tom Rose LLC and Triple Crown Academy. Does anyone have any experience with either of these?

Is all that tuition money really worth it?

Are there any other schools you would recomend?

Dog Training - Instructions to Train Your Dog

Recommended Answer:
Don't waste your money & time on any useless "formal school".

DIY...PROVE your competence by ***TITLING*** dogs! Those papers actually mean anything. Some bogus "schools'" 6 wk.course WON'T!lmao...yeah,you listen some doofy *proven* ignorant kid! That's how folks learn EVERYTHING now....they whine to strangers-on-line & take advice from their peer-in-ignorance.
Never listen to experienced ADULTS,right? The facts might interfere w/your fantasies.

Dog House Training - Complete Dog Training Tips and Tricks For Training Your Dog in Your Home

  • The BEST way to learn to train dogs... is to TRAIN DOGS.

The best way to prove your ability to train dogs is to compete with them and title them.

There is NOTHING you can learn in any of the "schools" for training dogs that you couldn't learn by going to a variety of classes with a variety of instructors as well as by attending seminars etc...

Join your local all-breed club and your local obedience clubs (yes, plural). TALK to the people who are doing it themselves and who have nothing to gain ($$) by feeding you "its my way only" crap because the first thing you need to know is that there are multiple ways to train dogs AND different dogs require different training skills.

Read books, go to classes, talk to the experts - ALL of it is just guidance EVEN the formal schools - the only REAL way to learn is by doing.

  • If you are confident in your abilities as a trainer keep at it! Take dogs to obedience classes where the trainers there can give you helpful suggestions and hints when it comes to training.

I LOVE to train. It's really where I feel comfortable...it's my niche if you will.

And there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with going to a school to learn more details and the fine lines that go along with training. My trainer always said that the reason she's done it for so long is because she is CONSTANTLY learning something new.

Don't be afraid to stick to your guns either. Remember that every dog will require a different method of training. There will be things you do that will work best for YOU that people won't agree with. Make something for yourself, don't become what someone THINKS you should be.

Also regarding competitions...they aren't as nerve wracking as they might seem. They're a pretty quiet go-around with you and your dog. Treat it as you would any other training session. As with any sport the more practice, the better.

ADD: Good to see you back Amy!

  • You're definitely better off with "hands on" experience. I've met DOZENS of "Master Trainers" (About $50-75K worth of schooling) that can't train a dog. The certificates really are bogus. Then again, marketing is a big factor in business. A lousy trainer may make a better living than a good trainer because of what he advertises. I see some trainers with their list of "Qualifications"....and 99% of the qualifications are simply organizations they belong to. I could pay memberships to every dog club in hte world, and advertise that as "qualifications". It may not mean a hill o' beans, but to the untrained client, it looks like you're gods gift to dog trainers.

  • Ignore Stalkers, their answers aren't worth the time it takes to type it. Yes titling dogs and proving yourself matters more, but there's nothing wrong with going elsewhere to learn different types of training and how to train for them.

I'm personally looking at going to Triple Crown. I'm also in college right now learning behavioral stuff, and general animal science, as an aid too.

Finding trainers around you that will let you sit in on their classes and/or help out with them will be greatly helpful too.

I starred, so hopefully my contacts can help you more.ADDITION: For the record, the triple crown is hands on training (3/4 of it is), so that you can actively learn different things and how to train for them. It IS a hands on learning, moreso than you might ever have an ability to do.Sjmdutch: I could be wrong, but I've always been under the impression that you have to have a certificate to be legal, especially if running your own training business.

  • I've done pretty well for the past 20+ years without having gone to a formal dog training school. I trained my household pets. I used my common sense. I read a multitude of books and have found that if you find just 1 new piece of information the book was worth the price!!! I understudied with the Instructor at my local obedience club and then started conducting classes which I did for over 20 years. I went to many seminars and again, like the books, if I got 1 new piece of information the seminar was worth the price!!! I have been a member of various organizations and like someone else here said ... it's just a way of funding their organization. Some make you go through testing at your expense and on a yearly basis and with the rigmarole of having references from a multitude of people and it really doesn't mean much to anyone but the eggheads or the ignorant, especially if you can't show proven results of your efforts! If it is not an accredited University course (and they certainly don't have any of those yet), then it doesn't mean a thing!

In fact, there is one person in my area that has sooooo many credentials on her training school website that it boggles the mind ... and it must've boggled hers too because she is an absolute nut who uses eletronic collars around the dog's neck AND around the dog's genitals. She's such a "professional" she's under investigation and facing a multitude of criminal lawsuits -- BUT SHE LOOKS GOOD ON PAPER!!!!!

If you really want to go to a good dog training school -- try Guide Dogs for the Blind or Canine Companions for Independence, et. al. At least there you will get a real education about training dogs and it will be worth your time and effort and expense.

Dog Health Questions: Dog training...?

I have had my toy maltese for about a month now and im having a hard time potty training him... i put him in the crate during the day and sleep with him at night but he is still going to the bathroom in the house helpppp???

Train Your Dog - Benefits and Tips For Successful Dog Training

Recommended Answer:
Wow - I was pet sitting a maltese puppy and had him house trained in the week/10 days the people were gone. I took him out every couple of hours and 1/2 hour after eating and he did the rest. Of course I wasn't letting him out of my sight because I'm sure he looked like a snack to my other dogs.

5 Effective Tips For Successful Dog Training

  • DOGS UNDER 6 MONTHS OLD ARE USUALLY NOT READY DEVELOPMENTALLY TO LEARN THE RIGHT SPOT. YOU NEED Patience, love, lots of positive reinforcement and proper training techniques. The behavioral success of your pet is a direct reflection of YOUR training, not their intelligence. Love your puppy, and be patient with yourself!

Please remember not to feed your maltese (I have one too) wet/pouched food because of the pet food recall. Be part of the solution be signing this petition against Menu Foods. Click on the URL!
    http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/578295121

  • First and foremost you need to stop sleeping with him. This makes you an eqaul member of the pack to him instead of the leader. Until he is potty trained he should be sleeping in his cage. Do not give him any water after 6 pm, this will reduce night time accidents. When you are home, take him out every hour. Give LOTS of praise when he goes. Small dogs do not have full control over their bladders until they are about 1 year old so expect a few accidents until then.

  • how old is he? Young puppies need to be taken out every 2 hours. Also... if the crate is too big for him, he'll end up using a corner in the crate. With a dog that size, you may want to consider paper training him. Idk why, but small dogs tend to be harder to house break... prolly b/c we miss thier accidents too often.
When you catch the dog in the act, interrupt him with a loud noise. Yelling "NO", or hitting him will likely only make him hide where he goes. Instead, clap or something. Then rush the pup outside. Always reward him with a treat and praise when he gose outside (or on the papers if you paper train him). Make sure you watch him. The best way to house break is to take them out when you notice them looking for a place to go. When your dog has an accident in the house, it's your fault, not theirs. Don't make him wait too long between trips outside!
Also, when taking him out, have the dog walk to the door (put the leash on and lead him out). If you always carry him, he'll never learn to go to the door when he wants out.

  • After a nap take the dog outside. Before a nap.And after he plays with another dog.And also before he plays with another dog.

Dog Health Questions: Dog Training...I need some serious help!?

I have a tiny Beagle and she likes to escape from the gate we have blocking the kitchen from the rest of the house (she and the other 2 Beagles I have aren't potty trained so we can't let them go all around the house). We have this one gate that seemed to work for a while but now she has figured out how to use her nose to create an opening just small enough so she can get out. It's just so annoying because she pees everywhere when she gets out and she scratches on peoples doors when they are sleeping. If anyone can help, please do! I really appreciate it ^.^
