Dog Health Questions: Where can I have my dog be trained to become a...?

Where can I have my dog trained to become a service dog I live in stroudsburg Pennsylvania and I was wondering if anyone knows where I can have my dog become a real service dog, and also get him registered I don't know if what disability I need him for is relavent so I won't put it unless anyone asks, but I need to know before school starts because all last year they denied my dog to become a service dog if anyone knows where I can find a place please tell me! Oh and I don't need to know where to "register" him like for him to actually get training to become a real service dog, thanks! :)

Basic Dog Training Commands - Improve Your Dog's Behavior

Recommended Answer:
You need to contact a trainer in your area that does CGC training. Once he's completed that, ask her for a referral to someone who trains specifically for service dogs.

You should realize that this training can get up towards $10000 to have it done correctly. It also will not be done by September.

Your dog must be healthy & strong enough to be your service dog and cannot have ANY temperament issues at all.

Here are a few resources that may help you:

Also, be sure that you understand what a service dog is. It's not a pet that goes places with you. It's a working dog that functions in a specific way to help you with a specific physical disability. Emotion Support Animals, Therapy Dogs, and Psych dogs are not the same thing as Service Animals and are not afforded the same rights.

Dog Health Questions: Milk dog problem. How can you help me with my Jumping Pit Bull?

I loved reading you advise on dog training! I am going to put your techniques into action right away. I have so many Problems with my little Pitt that I don't know where to start. He is the sweetest most affectionate loving dog I ever owned. But he is the dumbest as well. When people come in my house, he malls them . It is with love, but he malls them. If I have his prong collar on I can control him. But he has skin problems and his neck is usually inflamed! He is work and he is trouble but I adore him. I think anyone who walks in my house hates him. My other dog is well trained. I don't even have to speak. She obeys hand commands. Where have I gone wrong with Tyson?

Professional Dog Training - The Easy Road in Dog Obedience Training

Hi! I'm pretty new to using this so I'm not sure if you are talking to me...? NILF is not *my* technique, I do use it but did not create it :) Here's a link for more information on it http://www.dogo.org/Education/NILF.htm

Your dog sounds like quite the character! Is he getting enough excercise? He could be bored or under stimulated which is why he freaks out when something new (your friends) enter the house. In addition to the NILF you could try puzzle games, they make them work towards solving problems.

One of my labs had skin problems when he was younger and it turned out to be a food allergy, you can have your vet test for that and/or other issues that may be causing it.

Dog Health Questions: What can a parent do, when their child's dog got poisoned by a neighbors kids friend.?

Her dog ended up being put to sleep due to the poisoning. Our family is just so upset. Our daughter had her dog trained to do several tricks and was her very best friend. Is there anything legally we can do to this family or this kid?

Professional Dog Training - The Easy Road in Dog Obedience Training

Recommended Answer:
Do you have any proof that your neighbor's kid's friend did this? I would suggest calling animal control and seeing if you have a case. This is a sad situation, but unless you have seen the kid do it, or have hard evidence (meaning other animals in the same area have been poisoned and it's near the neighbor's house) there might not be anything legally that can happen. I am sorry for your loss though. :(

Some Obvious Benefits of Dog Training - Help For Owners of Older Dogs

  • Yes, there is. Murdering a dog is cruelty to animals. You need to contact the police-regardless if it was a kid that did the poisoning. I sympathize with you.

  • Call the police to **** them up

  • If you have proof that this kid did it you can file a Police Report.
If you don't, if your word against them.

  • kill the neighbor's dog too!!! just kidding..
yea i guess they can take legal actions.. there are also animal rights..

  • revenge is best served cold

  • If you have proof, I believe so. Contact animal rights.

  • A parent can do a lot as long as you have proof. The proof is the ticket. You can call the police or the Humane society can give you the right direction to go on this I won't let it go because the next time it could be a kid. That is so sad. I definitely would press charges . They get off too easy and should be punished full extent of the law.

  • I am so sorry for the loss of her pet/friend. It is hard enough on someone when a life is lost by natural means . . . but to lose them in this way is beyond terrible. Do you have any proof that the neighbor kids did it? If you do, call your local ASPCA and they will investigate. If you do not have one, like we don't where I live, I would just call your local police. Even if they can not prove animal abuse, maybe they can at least talk to the kids that did it and get them to confess or at least scare them into never doing anything like that again! If these kids are killing animals for kicks now, it is scary to think what they will be capable of as adults. I hope your friend gets the justice she deserves . . . for herself and her dog.

  • well if your dog was poisoned in your yard then I would suggest calling the police. But if it happened outside your yard then sorry to say but there is nothing you can do. I know for experience my husband had a Huskey and the neighbor dog came in to our yard and attacked his dog causing it to brake his leg well the cops said that if it happened in your yard you have rights to a law suit but if it happened in the street or outside of your yard there is really nothing you can do. We are outside city limits now if you live in city limits there are leash laws.

  • call the police now,i would haunt this person till the end

  • There are laws about that kind of action in most cities call the police. You can try to sue the party to. Lost and pain and suffering, this is one of the times that it would be justified to sue

Dog Health Questions: My friends dog, has bad behavior and influences mine! Help!?

I have a 22 week old Boxer. Ive had her since she was 8 weeks old. We take all kinds of classes, shes well socialized, well behaved and listens. My best friend has a 24 week old Beagle, who sits in a kennel all day, never socialized around other people or animals. She invites me to play dates all the time for the dogs. But when my dog gets around hers shes badly behaved because the Beagle doesn't listen to a word. Hes cooped up all day so hes so excited to see my dog at night he cant just mellow out for a minute! Then my dog wont listen to me because shes always being malled by the other dog. How do I nicely tell my friend that her dogs a pain and is hindering my dogs training without sounding mean??!! I love to hang out with her but when we do the dogs do!

Dog Training - Secrets For Training Your Dog

Recommended Answer:
You don't need to be nice, honest blunt words often get through best when the person is that dim-witted. Tell her why you don't want her dog around yours. How about inviting your friend and her dog to join you for an obedience class? They can never go to too many classes, and it might really help the Beagle.

I really know the problem. I foster dogs for a purebred rescue, and finally had to take my own dog back to beginning obedience class because the foster dogs were so untrained.

Well...stress can cause dogs to be very depressed. It can lead to vomitting and diarrhea. Because the dog is seeing a lot of changes and craves attention, but is not getting it...it can become depressed, and desctructive (he may start deficating in the house, vomitting, howling, etc)

Boxer Dog Training Tips and Ideas That Are Critical to Effective Instruction

    • Could be the stress or it could be a change in food or some type of stomach bug. Without knowing the dog's history of shots etc it's really hard to say.

    • I think that it was just upset about the moving and no attention. most animals are uncomfortable with moving, and car rides, and such

    • i would ask his owners at next week's class.

    • he might have eaten something he wasn't suppose to you need to take that dog to the vet to see what is really wrong with him/her.!!!!!!!!!!!

    • it could b that the owners dont spend time 2 play with the dog....or may b he hasnt gotten his shots yet

    • And that is why you shouldn't feed doggie before class. Not only because they get overly excited and will throw up, But its very hard to get a dog to work if hes on a full stomach. Sounds like their is alot going on around him. Nerves!!! Dogs throw up in my class all the time if they inhale treats too fast, or when they get overly excited playing with each other. I bet hes just fine. Obviously if this continues for more than 24 hours... It needs to be checked out by a vet. Dehydration can set in fast and that is no good. Good luck.

Dog Health Questions: Need dog training help?

my puppy is part greyhound but mostly alaskan husky.
she was bred to race but we rescued her from being put down when she was 4 weeks old ( her femur broke so the owners were going to put her down)

and well we hav had her since then so she bites a lot she has already ripped the skin on one of my fingers.

and i want to know ho to stop this aggression in her i need way to train er im very desperate!

she is a very intelligent dog and people say intelligent dogs are harder to train (though i would think it would be easier)

    but can anyone help??
i have no idea how to train her my other dog sequoia isa completely different breed and very calm so she was easy to train but this one is very hard.

what i want to train her to do:
    not beg
not steal stuff off of the table.
to not jump onto kitchen chairs (yes she does that)
to not dig.( she is working her way into the neighbors yard)
    to not eat our garden.
    how to stay.
    MOST IMPORTANLY NOT TO BITE!
i dont want anyone reporting her and having her put down
i love this puppy so much and dont want anything to happen to her.

she was born may 27th of this year.
just so you get an idea of how old she is

(no saying that we shouldnt have taken her at 4 weeks! i have had a lot of people yell at us for that. just so you know if we didnt take her at 4 weeks she would be dead right now. only because she broke her femur and would never be able to race)
btw her leg is all healed now

Why Is Dog Training The Best Thing We Can Do For Our Dogs?

Here's a great article on teaching bite inhibition

Dog Training Collar Aka Shock Collar Buyers' Guide

    • Thanks for rescuing. Try this web site it has some great training tips, you'll need to spend some time researching but I'm sure you'll find it worth it.

      http://www.dogtrainingbasics.com/index.h…

    • Do some google resorce on Victoria Stillwell. Her Training is FANTASTIC!

    • Most dogs do this kind of behavior because they get bored make sure you walk her everyday to get enough exorcise. When you catch her doing something you don't like make a loud sound and tap her lightly...most dogs hear the word "no" alot so after awhile they don't listen to it...Keep on it and she will come around good luck

    • Bred to race in what? Greyhound racing is only for purebred Greys - a Husky-X would not do, and adding Greyhound to a husky won't help in Sled racing, as Greys are short burst, low stamina dogs. The mind simply boggles at what she must look like!

All the same, like any dog who is being difficult to train, try ringing a professional trainer for one-on-one classes, or go to obedience classes with her. This should help a lot. Good Luck.

    • sounds like your pup needs some good training first be consistent teach her to sit, stay and down give treats every time she gets it rite. (she only wants to please you) so with the rite guidance she will behave well. you shouldn't feed your dog while your eating if you want to give her some of your food wait till your done and put it in her bowl. try hand signals while training i find that works very well with my dogs. and give her lots of exersise tossing a ball in the yard and walks.
when it comes to the biting it sounds like she's teething put a toy (kong) in her mouth everytime she goes to bite you and if she keeps it up give her time out in another room for just a few mins.

    • Huskies are very intelligent dogs, and they are also strong willed... they are independent and want to do what they want to do...

So the first thing we need to do when we acquire a husky is assume the role of pack leader. This is done by claiming your space, claiming your dominance, in a calm but serious manner.

A couple of examples are -- if you and your dog are going through a doorway, you always go first. If it's dinner time, you eat first, then feed the dog second.

Do not allow him on your bed or furniture without permission. For husky puppies, or untrained huskies, do not even give them permission until they learn that the furniture and your bed does not belong to them. If a person lets a husky get on beds and furniture at will, he will claim the space as his own, and will simply be letting you sleep with him.... a husky needs to know when he's not invited, so teaching the "off" command is important.

Your dog needs to learn some basic commands. Work on sit, first. Then down after he learns to sit... progress from there teaching the dog to heel, and so on.

Huskies usually dig and get into mischief out of boredom. We run our husky six out of seven days of the week, and he's so tired after about an hour of that, he lounges around for most of the rest of the day. A good way to accomplish this might be to use your roller blades or a bicycle (you have to make sure you are in a safe area, or that he's leash trained if he's not safe off-leash before you attempt these things).
If you have a dog park in your area, take your husky there. Maybe he would enjoy romping around with other dogs until you can offer more exercise.

Huskies like to put their mouths on our hands... some people say this is a friendly gesture, but i see it as a show of dominance. You can try a couple t hings -- say NO and clap your hands when the dog bites. If that doesn't sink in, then put the dog on its side on the floor. Hold it gently but firmly until it's calm. Make it lay there for a minute or so after it has become calm. Repeat every time it bites or nips. This is what alpha dogs do in packs -- they put dogs down and hold them there for in appropriate behavior, so your dog won't be offended. It is a normal, dog behavior.

You can also turn your back on the dog and fold your arms and look up into the air -- in other words completely ignore your dog when he nips. No attention at all, can sometimes curb this behavior.

Any sort of training will take patience and lots of repetition, so don't get discouraged... keep working.

I guess i could go on all night. But i'll shut up now. Here are a couple websites to get you started. You might want to do a search for Husky Training for lots more info!

      http://www.husky-petlove.com/husky_alpha…

      http://www.dogtrainingclassroom.com/sibe…

    • Bite Inhibition = *** backwards thinking done by new aged yuppy dog trainers...excuse me, behaviorist is the popular catch phrase at the moment, like Victoria "can't train a dog out of a wet paper bag" Stillwell. Bite Inhibition involves mimicking a pups equals (it's siblings) by shrieking and turning away. Which is idiotic. You are NOT your pups equal you are NOT trying to fill the role of litter mate. You should be taking cues from the mother. She growls a low deep growl and if the pup doesn't stop biting her she grips him up firmly the same as any mother who's ever taken a 5 year old to Wal-Mart has done. Dogs prey on weakness, you shrieking like a little sissy is more likely to fuel it's prey drive more than anything *sigh*. Simply say "No" in a firm voice, if that doesn't work, grab the puppy (not by it's throat, not in a figure 4 leg lock, simply grab the puppy firmly) and say "NO" again in a firm voice. The pup will stop dead in it's tracks.

-edit- Btw I didn't address the other training issues because, well, they're non-issues. That's basic obedience and basic house training. Not house breaking but house training aka teaching a dog how to behave in the house (no running, stealing food, barking, chewing, ect). That information can be easily found right here by doing a search on this site. Leerburg sells a great DVD on basic obedience. Just google "Leerburg Kennels" it'll pop right up. Pricey but worth it.

Dog Health Questions: Question about Dog Training......?

For all the dog trainers out there, how do you do it? When someone calls for your help, they could be a complete stranger or a psycho killer. Do you guys just get their address and go help them or do you do like some kind of background check?
Just a random question on a boring Wednesday....

    Helpful Dog Training Tips

    Recommended Answer:
Usually a person who needs training usually will come to your house with the dog for training. Very rarely do I as training go to their house but most of the time the questions asked do come from the person needing assistance.
You usually can tell if they are fake or real due to the questions they ask.
I have had several people ask for advice and only one person not call back so usually psycho people in general have other ideas in mind except that because the trainer can bring alone their dog and if the person is a psycho killer the dog can usually tell.

Dog Training: 7 Reasons Why You Should Do It Yourself

    • that is a good question. I just worked with a trainer who did housecalls and i didnt even think about this.

I deliver pups all over the US by car. Most of the people respond to my ads on the internet or have heard about me from previous customers. I always require some form of deposit that must clear the bank before meeting or be in cash before driving. Then I leave the mapquest directions up on my computer as well as all contact information for the person i am meeting. I usually google and 411.com their names and numbers. I ask for a home number as well as a cell phone number. I always call my mom and let her know where I am going the information of the people I am meeting. I always get the license plate number as well as make and model of the people I am meeting-more for help in finding their car, but it is does help if i were to disappear. not to mention i ONLY meet in busy places with cameras on their parking lots, most hotels, wal marts or busier gas stations.

this is my input as a breeder delivering pups but I dont know about trainers who are meeting you in your home. How scarey it must be for them!

Dog Health Questions: Dog training, how do you stop dogs from chewing furniture? Vinyl and foam rubber? I've tried all the usual.

I've got two three year old lab crosses, they were brought up in kennels and although not domestic animals are very friendly. the problem comes when they are left alone for any length of time, they chew the sofa to bits. They have all manner of chew toys etc but they love the sofa. I've tried pet repellent, even black pepper but all to no avail......any other serious idea's?

Dog Training Advice - Top 5 Important Dog Training Advice And Tips For Your Dog Obedience Training

    Recommended Answer:
Crate them when they're unattended. If they were brought up in kennels, they shouldn't have a problem with it. It is much safer for them and will save you a fortune in replacements!

Dog Training - Consistency vs. Habitual

    • Have you tried the product called Boundry? It works pretty good as long as you reapply it often. Also try bitter apple spray. If you catch them in the act a water spray bottle can also be effective. But you must be consistant. I would crate them when your'e not home.

    • i don't undrstand.........'not domestic animals'. dogs are domestic animals. they were brought up in 'kennels'. obviously they now live in the house? what kinds of repellents have you tried/ since they were raised in kennels, can yu crate them when you are not there to watch them? sounds to me like they could use some good, basic behavior training.

    • whenever a dog tries to chew on something not allowed, first say bad chew in a firm voice and then replace the bad chew with something that is allowed to be chewed (my aussie doesn't like chew toys so I had to get bully sticks for this purpose) and repeat in a happy jovial voice GOOD CHEW!

My sheltie chewed on like 2 things when she was 2 months old - we did this and she doesn't chew ANYTHING now. Not even when teething ; except her good chews. The aussie is getting the hang of it now too :)
