Dog Health Questions: Why isnt my dog trained yet?

ive had my dog for about 2 years now and shes still not poddy trained. Rercently, shes been peeing in the house alot and always in the same spot. my dad says we're going to have to give her away. i really need her to be poddy trained and i obviously dont know how to train her. Someone told me that she should be closed for about a month expect for going out on walks and playing with her with the ball. They said thatm she would then realize that she can only pee outside. Does anyone know easy way to train her and is the one month thing a good idea?

I trained dogs for 30 years and never had any difficulty re-training even entrenched housesoilers. I'm an expert in canine aggression and my specialty was rehabilitating aggressive dogs. So, believe me when I say that I'd take the most aggressive dog you can find, over a housesoiler, any day!

The reason I say that is because re-housetraining a dog is brutal. It shouldn't be. If you simply do the right thing when the puppy is 8-weeks-old, it is housetrained in a matter of days. When I get dogs that aren't housetrained by 6 months of age or older, I consider them entrenched housesoilers, and have to go back to basics. But it can take up to 3 weeks for older dogs to "get it." And that's the brutal part.

You see, the 2-hour method is so successful for me, I don't bother with any other methods. In short, you keep the dog confined at all times you don't or can't have your two eyes on it, and then take it outside to potty every 2 hours...DAY AND NIGHT. <~~~~that's the brutal part

It's too bad I'm retired and my web site was closed last year. I had a detailed, step-by-step explanation of the 2-hour method there. Essentially, when the dog is confined, it is in an area just large enough to stand, turn around, and lie down. When it is not confined in the house, you have your two eyeballs on it, so you can see if it needs to "go." When you take it outside to potty, you have it on a leash and never let it get too distracted by sniffing things. You keep it moving while saying whatever word you want to associate with relieving itself. Once it has "gone" praise like you've never praised before!!! You can then let it off-leash for some play and whatnot. You ALWAYS want to make coming back inside a pleasurable experience and not use your recall word for that. (Ideally, just go get the dog and have it heel or put it back on-leash to go inside, if it doesn't automatically follow you inside.)

I've never needed longer than 3 weeks to re-train even the most entrenched housesoilers. It's just that, a few accidents in the beginning, and getting up at midnight, 2am, 4 am, and 6 am, plus having to take the dog outside every 2 hours the rest of the day, is not something I look forward to, much less for 3 weeks! Hence, I developed a real distaste for working with housesoilers.

• No its not a good idea, and if you have had her since a pup you should have had her house trained at least a year and a half ago!!
  
  Get puppy training pads, put them on the spot where she pees. then gradually move them slowly to the door. Take her out at regular intervals and give her loads of praise once she has done the toilet outside. If the pads are to expensive for you then put news paper down.
  The problem with girls peeing in the house is their pee is really potent and smells really bad! I dont blame your dad tbh. When my girl kept doing it she wrecked the carpet in my kids room and I have since ha to rip it up and get it laminated.

• There could be two reasons for this, 1- the dog could have something medically wrong with him/her, or 2- the dog might not know that he/she has to go OUTSIDE.... If #2 sounds right, then there are multiple things you can do..... here are steps:
  1. Clean the area the dog keeps peeing in... go to a pet store and get a "no more marking" spray and make sure you clean it WELL!
  2. Take the dog into an enclosed area (that is not carpet), and by the door you want the dog to go out if it needs to go potty.
  3. Put a bell (like ones you see at hotels... here is an example- http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41… by the door.
  4. Take the dog out every 3-4 hours (or as long as your dog needs).... But make sure to ring the bell every time you take him out potty. ring it and say "lets go potty" or "lets go outside". Stay outside for as long as it takes him/her to do its business and as soon as he/she does, give them a treat and say "GOOD BOY/GIRL!!!!!"
  5. after about 1 week of you ringing the bell, take his paw and have HIM/HER ring the bell every time you go outside....
  6. he should get the hang of it and start ringing the bell on his own, and AS SOON AS HE RINGS IT, say "GOOD BOY/GIRL!! Lets go potty" and take him/her outside IMMEDIATELY.
  7. Until he/she gets the hang of it, make sure he/she is in the enclosed area and is supervised AT ALL TIMES. If you are not able to supervise him/her, then put him/her in a crate with just enough room for him to stand up and turn around. but not too big that he/she can pick a corner to use the potty...
  8. Take the dog on at least 2 walks every day... morning and night... and make sure the dog has a fixed eating schedule... 3 times a day at the same time every day... that will enable you to see when he/she eats and how much....

Dog Health Questions: Please help! My dog has started weeing right infront of me! all over the house!?

I have had her for about 6 weeks and after a week or so of having her she had a few mistakes in the house. we told her off and they were alot fewer. last night i was walking through the passage and she was walking infront of me and she squatted infront of my and started weeing, i made a loud noise to shock her so she would stop but she didnt so i pushed yhernose to it and smaked her. then i took her on a walk 10 minuites later, she only did a wee and when we got bac k and i got into bed she sat on my bedroom floor while i was getting ready for bed and did it again whilst looking straight at me so i made her sleep downstairs last night. woke up this morning at 7 to take her on her walk and she has pooed in the dining room! Since then she has weed 3 more times in all different palces.
why is she all of a sudden toileting in the house agin and so blatenly infront of me? i have put her in the garden as i am 33weeks pregnant and cant be doing with having dog mess everywere!

Can anybody help me out? should i get her into dog training? or do u think she will always go through her stages of doing it in the house?? im lost and dont know what to do as i dont need this hassle when i have a newborn!

  Dogs can pick up on their owner's stress. Your own stress over her accidents & the upcoming baby can be adding to her anxiety and causing more accidents on her part. Make sure you clean up any urine/poop spots in the house with an enzymatic cleaner made especially for that.. Even if you've cleaned the spots with regular cleaners, dogs can still smell the spots & will tend to go in the same accident areas again.
  
  Just as with babies, dogs' training is not always all progress. Sometimes everything seems to be going along well and then there are a few weeks where it looks like you're going backwards. Be patient, & good luck.

Potty training is usually done before puppies begin training classes but you can also start an obedience class and ask the trainer for tips. 100% they will tell you this: use a crate, use a leash, keep a schedule, use positive reinforcement.
  
  Use a crate: dogs will not go potty where they sleep. Get a crate just large enough for your puppy to stand, turn around, and lay down in. Wire crates come with dividers so you can get a larger one for her full size and use a divider to make it the right size for her right now. Keep her in the crate when you can not watch her and take her out as soon as she is out of the crate. Never leave her in the crate for more than 5 hours unless absolutely necessary.
  
  Use a leash: When she goes outside, even if it just your backyard, keep her on a leash so that you can monitor if she is going potty. She will know you mean business. You wont have to do this forever, just for a month or so till she gets the hang of it. It is also helpful because you can direct where she goes so she learns to go potty on the sides of the yard rather than right in the middle where you walk.
  
  Keep a schedule: This is most important!! It is important that she knows when her next break is. Take her out as soon as you wake up (she should sleep in her crate right beside your bed.) feed her, take her out 15 minutes after eating/drinking. Take her out right before you leave and put her in the crate with fun toys when you are gone. Take her out as soon as you get home. etc. puppies need to go out after playing, after sleeping, and after eating/drinking. She is old enough to hold it but not until she realizes that outside the the place to potty.
  
  Use positive reinforcement: regardless of what you have been told before, dogs do not learn by punishment. When you rub their nose in their mess they do not understand that it means "not in the house" they think it means that going potty in general is bad. When your pup goes potty inside, say nothing at all. Clean it up and go on with your day. If you catch her in the act then say "no!" loudly and take her outside right away even if she is done going. When she goes outside (which she will have to if she is monitored and crated in the house) praise her lavishly. Plenty of hugs and kisses and maybe even a special treat or play a game.
  
  ** another trick you can use is teach her to tell you when she needs to go. Hang jingle bells from your door and ring them everytime you go out while saying "outside" after a month or so she will begin to ring them to tell you she needs to go outside.

  My dogs, Dakota and Duke, are well behaved now more than they were before the trainer came. Both of them used to be noisy in the house and when I was on the phone. Now they are quiet inside and when I am on the phone. I am happy that they have learned that. They have also gotten better at walking on the leash.

• The cheapest thing is for you to buy (or even rent) books on dog training. There are probably videos you can rent or buy as well. TV shows, such as the "Dog Whisperer", also provide tons of clues about how to train dogs.
  
  Basically, you need to establish yourself as the "alpha" in the house. At present, you haven't done that. When a dog fails to see an "alpha" in the house, he/she will take on that role. However, a dog prefers not to have to do so (after all, it is a burden). If the dog sees that you are taking on the role, you'll be amazed at how quickly the dog will realize that she can no longer "get away" with things and how much better behaved she'll be.
  
  Prong collars, cans with coins in them, water bottles, TONS of patience and lots of time (no yelling, scolding and ESPECIALLY no hitting) will work.
  
  However, as a new trainer, I still recommend you take at least some classes. Those can run as little as $100. That may seem like a lot - but a well behaved dog is definitely worth that and more (I paid a fortune for my training, and it was worth every cent!).

Dog Health Questions: Has anyone ever used this dog training collar for their dog? how thick is a Boxers neck(the skin)?

its called the SPORTDOG SD-105S YARD TRAINER its for stubborn dogs. i have read a little bit about it and they say its for dogs over 15 lbs. so i guess it will work on a boxer. also does anyone know if a boxers neck the skin is really thick like an Akita's. the only reason that im looking into this collar is because my dog is very stubborn and doesn't listen to any of my commands i even hired a profesional trainer to work with me and him and the dog wouldn't even do what the trainer asked. so im at my wits end with this and im wanting to get this collar and try that.

Dog Health Questions: Are dog training classes worth the money?

I have a 1/2 year old chihuahua mix. I used to live in a hard floor apartment and she was trained to use the pads inside and there was a backyard she would relieve herself back there too. Now I live in a carpeted apartment with no yard and I walk her when we wake up, an hour after she eats, sometime during the day, and before we go to bed at least. Since Ive moved here she REFUSES to go anywhere near the pee pads even though the day before we moved here she used them at the other apt! She has accidents all the time on the carpet. If I go out even for 5 minutes I have to kennel her and I cant even trust her out when Im here. I dont know what to do Im at wits end with her she does it and then she sulks and hides under the table from me because she knows shes not supposed to. I looked up in home behavior dog trainers and it costs $300 or more! Is it even worth the money? What should I do?

• Once you take her to the Vet & make sure it's not something medically wrong & just seems coincidental, you may have to sort of retrain her, I've never understood why people pad train, this is the type of problems that pad training causes, it is likely your dog never knew that the pads were where she was supposed to be going.
  
  I used to think the potty patch was silly, but in your case it may be the solution, you still need to walk her & reward good behavior/correct bad behavior. I also recommend you crating her when you cannot be there to watch her every move & until you get her housebroke again & it may take some time for her to get used to the new surroundings & smells. Once you establish her area to potty, you should not have anymore issues.

Dog Health Questions: Dog training, how do you stop dogs from chewing furniture? Vinyl and foam rubber? I've tried all the usual.

I've got two three year old lab crosses, they were brought up in kennels and although not domestic animals are very friendly. the problem comes when they are left alone for any length of time, they chew the sofa to bits. They have all manner of chew toys etc but they love the sofa. I've tried pet repellent, even black pepper but all to no avail......any other serious idea's?

• whenever a dog tries to chew on something not allowed, first say bad chew in a firm voice and then replace the bad chew with something that is allowed to be chewed (my aussie doesn't like chew toys so I had to get bully sticks for this purpose) and repeat in a happy jovial voice GOOD CHEW!
  
  My sheltie chewed on like 2 things when she was 2 months old - we did this and she doesn't chew ANYTHING now. Not even when teething ; except her good chews. The aussie is getting the hang of it now too :)
