Dog Health Questions: Animal training schools?

I need some info on school that have courses in animal training, exotic animal training, wildlife re habitation, service dog training, anything along these lines. I live in Canada but would also like info on schools in Europe or Australia.

Thanks!!

Service Dog Training For the Hunting Dog

Recommended Answer:
My knowledge is pretty most non-existent on Canadian resources so I will give you some American ones.

Dog Trainer schools are numerous in America. Simply search Yahoo for "dog trainer school" and you will get a large list. Learn what the theories and techniques each school applies are and make sure it is something you agree with or something you trust to work. Schools that encourage aggressive assertion techniques or anything combative against dogs should be avoided.

Exotic animal training is going to mainly be pulled from the knowledge you learn through a university program. Studying zoology, marine biology, animal behavior, animal sciences, and psychology are all ways to learn animal training techniques. Nearly every university is going to have more than one of these degree programs. To get a job in this field you will need lots of experience working or volunteering with wild/exotic animals because hands-on training is essential.

In America, wildlife rehabilitation is a state and federally mandated certification program. You must become an apprentice under a wildlife rehabilitator in your state (number of hours of apprenticeship varies by state) and take a written exam to show that you know the laws and guidelines for working with and housing various animals. Some states require a test for each different category of animal such as mammals, predators, bird of prey, migratory birds, reptiles, and rabies vector species. Most states also require that you be vaccinated against rabies.

Service dog training is going to be learned through a dog trainer school or through a school that specialized in only teaching service dog training. Again, experience in working with dogs and already having a good understanding of basic obedience training and behavior modification is essential.

Dog Health Questions: Does anyone know of a good dog obedience training school where I can send my 1yrold chow/shepherd to in socal?

Its been difficult trying to train my dog for the past few months and I find myself having less time to spend with her right now but that is only temporary. However, I would like to send her off to a dog school where she can spend a couple of weeks learning how to be obedient and great dog. I used to spend a great amount of time working diligent with her by reading books, watching the dog whisperer and other dog training videos and they only seemed to work a handful of times. Please let me know if you have any personal experience with sending your dog off to a training school in SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA and getting great results! Thanks!

Find Out How You Could Get Into Dog Training As A Career

Recommended Answer:
Obedience classes are for dogs AND their owners. Find some training classes and MAKE the time to go with your dog. Having someone else train her is completely pointless if you aren't there as well learning how to handle YOUR dog.

"I used to spend a great amount of time working diligent with her by reading books, watching the dog whisperer and other dog training videos and they only seemed to work a handful of times." all of that time could have been spent in obedience classes with your dog being shown how to train your dog by a LIVE person.

Electronic Dog Training Collars

  • I owned a chow chow many years ago, they are lovely dogs but they are very hard to train. You have to be very strict with them as they are very defiant and will only do what they want. I found giving her treats when she obey me worked. I can't help you with any training schools as I am in england sorry. But you have to stick with it, even after your dog has been trained you have to keep the training up or it will just go back to doing what it wants. Good Luckx

  • To be honest, Obedience training school don't just cut it for me. It is better you train the dog on your own, to build a closer relationship with the dog, or you just consults a professional who GUIDES you on the dog training instead of doing it for you.

    I hope I could help a little!

Dog Health Questions: How do i make my dog more obedient?

Hello!!!
I just goy a dog for my birthday in August and it is the cutest thing ever its a toy Yorkie and i loved it for like 2 weeks and know it just drives my crazy, I used to let it sleep in my room in like a cute like box thing but it would wake me up at 5:00 in the morning so know it just sleeps outside with my other dog. And very time I open the backyard door it runs inside the house and when you go to pick it up it pee's. It also digs holes, doesn't go to the bathroom in the grass and it barks all night its just crazy. I was thinking about taking it to a dog training class at pets-mart but I don't really know if it works. Please give me advise on how to fix this problem as fast as I can and without to much work involved.

thanks
XOXO

Clicker Dog Training is Extremely Reliable and Can Be Done by Anyone

Recommended Answer:
Never let your dog sleep on your bed unless you want him to be spoiled and don't really care.

It is best to leave you dog to sleep in it's own bed locked somewhere in the house such as the laundry room, and if he/she starts barking, don't go see what's wrong because he/she just wants attention and going to see whats wrong with her/him would let him/her think that he/she is the boss and would take advantage on you.

Always let your dog out at about every two hours or one hour. And if you want your dog to be potty trained inside the house, you could by these dog nappy pads that you spread out on the floor, and then whenever it is just about to pee or poo, quickly take your dog to the nappy pad, and keep taking it to the pad until it will go to do its potty on the pad by itself.

If it digs holes in the garden whenever you let it out, make sure your garden is fenced and that the fence is stuck into the ground, so when it digs a massive hole it wont be able to get out.

If it barks whenever you let it out, i know this sounds cruel, but you can always get a shock collar for little dogs so it wouldn't hurt them a lot, but they usually teach them a lesson to not bark for no reason whenever it is let out. Or you could say "no!" but in a very strong, tough voice so it knows that you are serious. If that doesn't work, you can always spank it, but not too hard, just gently, and it is best to do it just above their nose, because dogs don't really like to be tapped or spanked above their nose. Yorkshires are also very well known to yap a lot. LoL That is probably why your one is noisy, my neighbour has a yorkie and sometimes it would be barking for the whole day.

Another option is you can take it to doggy school.

Make sure you don't spoil your dog too much even if it is very tempting to because it will just take advantage on you and would think that they are the alpha and you are the lower member of the pack.

Well anyways, have fun with it and good luck on training your dog. And i beat it is extremely cute because i love yorkies myself, we were going to get one but my dad didn't want a yorkie because he said they would be very noisy and are too small.

Dog Training Basics: 3 Golden Rules

  • ok first thing You have a huge problem if you want to have a dog and not have "too much work involved" . In that case just find the dog another home because you might not be suitable to be a pet parent. The dog wants attention and his bored and that's why it finds ways to entertain itself. Try a class or read articles on training.

  • Hi,

You might want to teach your dog the basic obedience commands. They reinforce your role as your dog's leader. Using treats to lure your dog into the correct position or place, and then to reward her for obeying, is one of the easiest and most dog-friendly methods. here's more info:

    http://lnk.nu/dogtime.com/rzy.html

  • fix ur dog. crate train it. walk your dog. and actually potty train it to go outside, and if u pick it up it pees then don't pick it up

  • Sign up for Puppy Kindergarten, You need to learn to communicate with the puppy and he needs to learn to respect you.

  • One of my all time favorite quotes is: "If you don't have time to train a dog, get a stuffed animal!"

  • Take him to see a trained pet psychologist.

  • All dogs like to be kept inside because they are social animals, but keeping a toy Yorkie outside just spells a recipe for disaster. They aren't outside dogs, have long hair, and are very fragile. It sounds like your dog needs a lot of interaction and exercise, and you should be consulting with a veterinarian on how to train your dog so that you are both happy--because right now he's not happy and neither are you.

If all else fails, consider giving the puppy to someone who is more prepared to handle him--there are lots of breed-rescues that might be willing to rehome him. Keeping him outside is not right.

Dog Health Questions: How do I positively train my dog?

I have a dog, he's a pit bull, and I dominate him. I grab his throat and put him on the ground to show my dominance. I was at the dog park, and my dog bit another dog and I dominated him, and another owner came up to me and said "That's wrong. That's Patriarchal dog training". I'm not completely sure what she meant by that, but she said "You can get better results by positive reinforcement". So how do I positively reinforce my dog not biting other dogs?

At the moment it seems like squeezing his throat is the best solution.

Dog Training - You and Your Dog

Recommended Answer:
That woman was right.

The theory of dominance training was disproved years ago. But people like Cesar Milan continue to use it. It's very outdated and just results in the dog fearing the owner.

For one thing, if your dog bites other dogs, you shouldn't have him at the dog park at all until the issue is resolved.

Retraining an aggressive dog will take a lot of hard work, time, and patience on your part. You need to desensitize him to other dogs. It's an awful long process and too much to write here. You need to find an experienced trainer who uses positive reinforcement training techniques:

3 Essential Dog Training Tips That Every Dog Owner Should Know

  • Even though grabbing his throat might be working it could hurt your dog. When your dog does something bad lightly tap his mouth and say no sternly if he bites someone tap him and say no and put him in his crate alone or bring him home from the park your showing him that if he does something bad he can't play. if he does something good reward him with praise or a treat but don't do this for every single thing even though Postive reinforcment is important in training it should not be the only Type of training. like kids dogs need to be told what to do and what not to do

  • Hey endde,

Dog training is not necessary the easiest thing to do, or find thebest method to go about doing it, but i came across this superb training / solution program that targets the training for the animal in the right way. I feel like the dog whisperer now! it was truly eye opening what it has taught me about my animal. You should check the link and see how it goes for you. good luck training.

  • If you aren't smart enough to figure out how to train your dog without being a bully, too bad for you and your dog.
Big deal, you're big enough to put your dog to ground, aren't you the great dog trainer?
You and Cesar Millan would do well together, and good luck bullying a pit bull.
Hope you have a friend with money to bail your out of jail when someone sues you for a dog bite.

  • Hi I see you're in need of a bit of help. My friend was also finding things difficult until he followed the dog training academy program. He now has a fully trained dog in only a few weeks. Try it yourself. Good luck

  • Hey I see that you have questions about what it takes to train dogs and help them get better behaved and healthier. My friend found this incredible way to help his 3 dogs and it has been great for them Maybe it can be a help to you too.

  • That's why chavs like you shouldn't be allowed anywhere near dogs.

  • I trained my dog and he knows over 20 tricks !!!! You should give your dog a reward when he does the trick or when he is pretty close to it . He or She will get it eventually.

  • I saw on the Dog Whisperer that grabbing their neck is the right thing to do. What you're doing is working, stick with it!

  • Every time your dog looks at and reacts badly toward another dog you cause it pain and you dominate it and squeeze it's throat. So your dog is learning that other dogs are bad and they are the reason.

So with positive reinforcement you work with a dog outside of it's threshold and before it starts reacting and you reward it for being calm and looking at another dog. You could give a dog hundreds of rewards ad slowly move closer and closer over weeks and maybe longer it depends on just how much damage you have created with your dominance type training.

Anyways you have a dog that is not better with your methods you have a dog you can not trust if he is off leash or on leash with not starting a fight, so I would say you have your proof your methods do not work.

My friend in this video is using positive reinforcement for a dog that is dog aggressive, this is not my friends dog he is fixing this dog that was dominated in similar ways to what you have done.

Dog Health Questions: Dog training?

my dog ive only had for a year, i got her from a family member who got her from a church(the family member had her for 10 years i think) so she is 11 in human and 77 in dog years. she doesnt listen all that well and i need to think of good ways to teach her to listen i still have to put the leash on her to potty and when she sees other animals *except kittens* she wants to attack, and when we do go places like the park she barks at every one in site and wont stop till i repremend her a few times. she is a silky terrier, so she is relativly small. what should i do about her behavior. i want to train her so that my parents let me take her places more often. she is the #1 thing in my life so it would be great if i could have some hints on how to get her to respect. (and stop begging for food at dinner time or n/e other time we have foodXD) thanks!

The Basics Of Dog Training, Teach Them To Your Dog Before It's Too Late

Recommended Answer:
Wow...your dog has been uprooted a bit and the first owners probably didn't socialize or train her right. At her age it will be difficult to break her habits.
She obviously wasn't trained to socialize with other dogs so unless you have a friend who has a dog and wants to help, you may have to put up with it. If you know someone who can bring their dog over, first important thing is to meet in a neutral place. Your dog will not learn in "it's den when it would expect respect from the other dog". Keep your dog on a leash but let them sniff each other and be quick to correct her if she tries to attach the other dog.
Sounds like she was fed food scraps and that's why she begs at the table. 10 years of a habit is not easy to break. If you have a small crate, put her in it during dinner and after you have eaten, let her out and prepare her dinner. Be sure she sees you giving it to her. This not only lets her know you are giving her what she's getting and nothing more but that you are the "food catcher" and therefore higher in the pack than she.
Go to the library and get dog training books. One good book to buy (I'm sure you'll have other dogs in years to come) is "Dogs for Dummies" - it's excellent.
She may also be hard of hearing - check with the vet.
She's had 11 years of doing things one way so breaking these habits may be impossible. Just be glad - her habits could be much, much worse.
You could try a private dog trainer - even paying for a one day consult, you'd learn a lot to try at home.
Unfortunately when we get an animal we tend to baby it. It's quite possible it was owned by elderly people who treated it like their baby and spoiled it rotten. Unfortunately if you outlive your dog (or if they had to go to a nursing home) then those habits are ingrained. And bad habits are the reason most dogs are turned into animal control and euthanized........all human error.
Please don't give up on her. I'll be praying for you.
Good luck!!!!!!

p.s. please don't use a pinch collar or anything other than a haltie to correct her lunging. They make it so much easier to control your dog and are the kindest type.

Finding the Essential Dog Training Supplies

  • It is never too late for a good obedience class.
A "pinch" collar will help with the lunging when walking her. A quick pop of the leash and a firm "leave it" or "no" usually works. You need to ignore the other animal and keep her moving AT YOUR SIDE - saying no, no, no, leave it, in an undertone the whole time. Never let her walk in front of you; keeping her at your side tells her that you are in control and since you are not worried about the other animal, then she can relax and enjoy the walk also.
You could always practice with walks around the back yard then progress to walks around the block, then on to the park.
My dogs are fed in their crates at the same time we have our dinner.

  • need to watch the "dog whisperer" and take lots of notes! Maybe she needs to be ON the dog whisperer !! She sounds out of control. You need a professional, not much we can do for you on this forum. Good luck!

  • sounds like she did not get socialized as a puppy. her need to bark is part of her breed. terriers vermon dogs and were trained to bark when the found them. but bring her to the park and when she barks lightly hold your hands over mouth keeping it closed and tell her no. there is a pressure point here on dogs. it wont hurt them but send a singnal that your the boss.when u get her barking under control start allowing her to great other dogs if the owners say it is ok. if she growls grp her mouth and tell her no.

  • Here is a great site to help you. www.so-easy-dog-training.com

And God bless you for you kindness. Most people wouldn't even try with an older dog. Good Luck

  • Good luck a dog 11 yrs old will be hard to change. You can try putting her in dog cage every time she begs for food away from sight of food and see what happins.tell her no and gently cage her for a time.and be consistant with this and maby after a week you will only have to cage her 2 times a day.and after another week only 1 time good luck.

Dog Health Questions: Dog training help? train it to overcome his fears?

My 5 month old Border Collie is terrified of things that make noise while it moves like dragging the garbage cans on pavement and also, His scared of my longboard (long skateboard) Now that is important for him to overcome because im a teenager, and I love him, and my longboard and i want to ride it while his on the leash with me. I want him to overcome his fears but I dont know how to help him. today and a few other times i put treats everytime he gets close, or when he touches it, but idk It doesnt seem to help. its like he forgets what he learned last time. and He is very smart. He learned how to open the door by pullin on a rope in like 5 mins. very proud of him (: So any steps for how to help him? thanks

Dog and Puppy Obedience Training - More Dog Training Tips

Recommended Answer:
Be very careful with what you expose your puppy to. What is imprinted into the brain as a puppy usually stays with them for life. That includes very loud noises so stop dragging the garbage cans around.

You may have to go easy with the skateboard for a while and don't take your dog with you until he is at least a year old. In the meantime, put the treats directly on the skateboard and roll it very slowly with your hand. Keep the noise level way down. It helps if you have the skateboard close by when you are playing with his favourite toy. That will also associate the skateboard with a good experience. When he is lying down in the yard then gently roll the skateboard with your hands slowly past him. Stay about 2 metres away and first and see how he reacts. If he stays calm then reward him. Move it closer in over time, again slowly.

Once he is used to that then you can get on the skateboard and go past him. Again, a good distance away. Get closer if he remains calm and reward him with a treat.

This might take just a few weeks or it might take a few months. It depends on how scared he is of the skateboard right now.

Another tip, if you get thunderstorms then act normally. Play with your dog with his favourite toy. If he is barking or whining then just ignore him. Don't cuddle him or pat him as that's rewarding him for being afraid.

Dog Training With A Clicker

  • make sure you expose him to noise at all times you can. Loud bangs, crashes ect. make sure he is on a leash in case he tries to run. You can teach him as soon as he hears a loud noise to sit (with treats). You need to redirect his attention from the loud noise with training. They love to train and need it! Also exercise him a lot and it will help. It will take time but have patience. good luck

  • 5 months is often a fearful age for many dogs, and BCs have their "issues" often including noises. Many people talk about how great BCs are (I love them) but you also need to understand what they are NOT necessarily good at, and this article is a must read for anyone with BCs

    http://bordercollietrustgb.homestead.com…

As for helping your dog, one of my favorite online resources for people with shy or fearful dogs is

    http://fearfuldogs.com/

  • Is there a chance that the dog was abused before you got him? If so it could just simply take time to earn his trust. In the mean time rewarding him is probably the best solution, although it will take time Collies are smart animals and he will catch on. Good luck!

  • I would gradually introduce him to louder noises and then he probably won't be scared eventually. And I believe that your dog is smart, but it might be hurting his ears because dogs ears are sensitive. They can hear much better than us

  • MABEYYYYYY yo9ur dogg isssnt ssmartttttttt lol swyy to hearv that!!!!!=) lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dog Health Questions: Dog training help plz!!!!?

my dog uses the bathroom in the floor, runs off all the time(like when we let him off the chain he instantly runs off.), and chases chickens. can someone tell me best way to train them not to?

Important Information Regarding Dog Training That Can Help You

Recommended Answer:
One at a time...

1. Housetraining - go back to what you did when he was a young pup - watch him like a hawk and put him outside whenever he shows signs of needing to toilet, also, outside as soon as he has eaten, and whenever he wakes from a nap or sleep. Be consistent, don't scold if he 'goes' in the wrong place, but do growl whilst you're clearing up the indoor mess - that will get your message across clearly. Of course, praise when he 'goes' outside.

2. Recall - make sure he comes back to you well when you are in the house first, then practise outside in your garden, and only when he will come all the time somewhere where there are few distractions should you practise the recall in the big outside. Make sure to always praise when he comes back to you, never get angry - even if he has kept you waiting for hours... he will think you are angry because he has come back... If you are anxious about letting him off in the park, once you've mastered the recall at home, find a training centre near you with a large, fenced outside area - they will very likely hold outdoor sessions specifically for the recall.

3. Chicken chasing, or any livestock chasing, is serious - and could end up with your dog being shot if he chases someone elses stock. Aversion training is ideal here - try a spray or vibrating collar (not a shock collar) with a remote control, and as soon as he makes the first move towards the chickens, shout 'leave' or 'no' and if he doesn't instantly back off, hit the remote. The vibration or spray will stop him in his tracks without hurting him, and you can then redirect his attention. It will take consistency and time, but is very effective. Again, if you have problems, consult your local dog trainer for more advice.

Good luck!

Canine Clicker Training - How to Avoid the #1 Dog Training Mistake of All-Time

  • Yes, keep tasty treats with you outside at all times.
The key to making your dog come when you call is letting him know you are always the most interesting thing around, and that he will always have something fun to do when he gets there.
Whenever he does decide to come make sure you play with him, or give him a treat.
Avoid leaving as soon as you call him, if you do he may associate "coming towards" you with leaving and having no fun.

    good luck

  • Tell him no!! You are in charge. You need to be the pack leader as the dog whisper would say. I use natures miracle when my dog has an accident inside. It eats the enzimes so they can't smell it and go there again. Maybe when you get him off his change, hold his colar and tell him to sit. My dogs used to jump all over me when I was going to take them out, it drove me nuts. I started telling them to sit everytime I reached for their leash and now they sit each time. You need to be consistant with him and let him no it is not ok. When he does something bad tell him no, when he does something good, tell him he did a good job and give him a treat so he knows the differance. Good luck.

  • Sounds like your dog has never been expected to have manners and never been shown what is and is not acceptable behaviour with any consistancy. The fastest way to get this sorted is to get yourself a positive-only trainer to show you the best ways of working with your dog. There are too many issues here to try to solve this over the Net with any long term success. Please do this sooner than later. A dog that doesn't understand manners is bound to get into serious trouble.

  • One way that i used to get my dog to stop chasing other animals, is to get a small bottle with a few small stones in the bottom, (enough to make a loud shake when you shake it) put your dog on its lead and purposely walk past another animal (in your case a chicken, but make sure that you are far enough back so that if he/she reaches the end of the lead, he/she is still at least 2, or more meters away). As soon as your dog takes any notice in the chickens at all, even if it just looks at them, stop, shake the bottle close to your dog and let out a firm 'NO!'. Also for added effect try throwing down the bottle next to your dog.
If you have a big powerful dog however, this isn't advised as it could easily overpower people :P

    Hope this helped!

  • Uses the bathroom in the floor? Most dogs do toilet on the floor. Do you mean in the house where it's not supposed to?
    How old is the dog?
Can you please answer the questions above and add more info? You keep him on the chain all the time? How is the land arrangement where do you keep your dog? Is there a fence?I'll check back later to revise my answers.

I would go to the AKC website: www.akc.org and do a search for obedience clubs inyour area- I think the obedience clubs generally have a better track record than some of your "chain" schools.

A Beginner's Guide to Dog Training

  • Do you have a Pet smart near you? I did their training and there were 2 German shepherds in my class that did very well. Only $99.

  • German Shepards are really smart dogs and wherever you go they should catch on pretty fast. Try Petco or Petsmart.

  • The basics of training a big dog is the same as training a small or medium dog.....size really doesn't matter. Your best bet for training is your local obedience club since the trainers are club members and actually have experience in the ring. Since these groups are not for profit it will also cost you much less. You can locate one in your area at: http://www.akc.org/clubs/search/index.cf…

Do not go to PetCo or PetSmart since they are much more expensive and most of their "trainers" have never titled a dog and don't really know what is required.

  • I'd say youtube is haha
take a look at some video-lessons

  • I recommend you visit the website I went to when my dog had behavioral issues a while back. It transformed my dog's behavior. Good Luck!
