I need some info on school that have courses in animal training, exotic animal training, wildlife re habitation, service dog training, anything along these lines. I live in Canada but would also like info on schools in Europe or Australia.

Dog Trainer schools are numerous in America. Simply search Yahoo for "dog trainer school" and you will get a large list. Learn what the theories and techniques each school applies are and make sure it is something you agree with or something you trust to work. Schools that encourage aggressive assertion techniques or anything combative against dogs should be avoided.

Exotic animal training is going to mainly be pulled from the knowledge you learn through a university program. Studying zoology, marine biology, animal behavior, animal sciences, and psychology are all ways to learn animal training techniques. Nearly every university is going to have more than one of these degree programs. To get a job in this field you will need lots of experience working or volunteering with wild/exotic animals because hands-on training is essential.

In America, wildlife rehabilitation is a state and federally mandated certification program. You must become an apprentice under a wildlife rehabilitator in your state (number of hours of apprenticeship varies by state) and take a written exam to show that you know the laws and guidelines for working with and housing various animals. Some states require a test for each different category of animal such as mammals, predators, bird of prey, migratory birds, reptiles, and rabies vector species. Most states also require that you be vaccinated against rabies.

Service dog training is going to be learned through a dog trainer school or through a school that specialized in only teaching service dog training. Again, experience in working with dogs and already having a good understanding of basic obedience training and behavior modification is essential.

Dog Health Questions: Does anyone know of a good dog obedience training school where I can send my 1yrold chow/shepherd to in socal?

Its been difficult trying to train my dog for the past few months and I find myself having less time to spend with her right now but that is only temporary. However, I would like to send her off to a dog school where she can spend a couple of weeks learning how to be obedient and great dog. I used to spend a great amount of time working diligent with her by reading books, watching the dog whisperer and other dog training videos and they only seemed to work a handful of times. Obedience classes are for dogs AND their owners. Find some training classes and MAKE the time to go with your dog. Having someone else train her is completely pointless if you aren't there as well learning how to handle YOUR dog.

  (yeah, i know it is hard, but it is easier to know what he is doing when you have him with you)
  if he starts to poo or pee on the floor, firmly tell him NO.

• Well your first problem is you. You can't let the dog out because you can't tell? If it isn't potty trained, it's not going to know it can't go inside and i'm not so sure you're realy up to it. You have to be consistant and watch the dog very closely. The easiest way to potty train is to get a crate. So yes, it will cost you money since you don't seem willing to let the dog out all the time.
  If you're still not going to buy a crate, the key to house training is positive reinforcement. You need to take the dog out every 3 hours, plus right after meals, right before waking up and right before bed. Also, remove all food and water about 6:00, this will keep them from doing their business all over during the night. Each time you take out the dog and she goes, give her a treat or praise her or both. You need to take her out the same way everytime, and on a leash so you can make sure she's using the same spot. When she does happen to go inside, do not rub her nose in it or smack her or anything like that, dogs live only in the present and this will confuse them. If you do catch them in the act, make a loud nose or throw a pop can full of pennies in their area (not at them!). This will startle them, they'll stop and you can rush them outside. If you don't catch her, just remove her from the room and clean it up when she's not watching. You will want to buy a good carpet cleaner, they continually go in the same place because they still smell it. Keep in mind that puppies do have accidents and probably will for awhile, but if you associate going to the bathroom outside (if you play or go for a walk after she's gone to the bathroom), the dog will enjoy it and try to please you.


• It NEEDS to be crate trained and a puppy that young needs to be taken outside every 30 minutes until you learn it's potty routine. Praise her when she pottys outside and ignore it when she goes inside. Try using a command word or phrase she can associate with going pee outdoors and poop outdoors.

Preferably the level w/ a outside door that you can get to fast! If he moves, just keep putting him back to that place till he goes. When Chog goes, PRAISE like wild!!!! Make sure he knows that that was a good place to go to the bathroom. • Really cute puppy but he is going to look really bad if you don't get the housebreaking taken care of. You cannot train him if he is down and you are up. He must be with you. First put him on a schedule something like this:
  6:00 AM Get up, take Chog to go potty
  6:15 Give Chog his breakfast (you go get showered and dressed for the day.

  7:45 Give Chog a drink and take him out again.
  Continue to give Chog a drink and take him out about every hour to hour and a half. He does not get to just eat or drink because a puppy will go potty 15 minutes after he eats or drinks so you have to know when he is eating or drinking.
  12:00PM Give Chog his lunch and another drink. Continue to take him out on a regular basis.
  5:00PM Give Chog his dinner. Continue to take him out and give water until about 2-3 hours before you go to bed than just pick up his water but continue to take him out until bedtime.
  I strongly recommend crate training because most dogs will not mess in the place where they sleep and it will prevent the messes from being everywhere. If you are not crate training then you must keep your puppy with you. He cannot train himself.
  House training a puppy is the first step in training and I really hope you will find someone to help you train your puppy in his doggy manners. Puppy kindergarten is really a lot of fun for you and for your puppy. Think about it.

So today my I let my dog out, but when I called her she didn't want to come. Instead she just wanted to run around and play. She is just a puppy so I completely understand, but I want her to know when I call her she needs to stop and come to me. Try starting out in a less distracting environment (like in your room with no one else around). As she comes reliably in less distracting environments, gradually increase the amount of distraction (maybe in the living room with the tv on or someone else in the room). If she isn't coming, try reducing the distractions or increasing the fabulousness of your treats. As she progresses, continue increasing distractions.

In a situation where your dog is playing, you need to make sure that "coming" is a fun experience at least 80% of the time in order to keep from undermining your training. While she is playing, call her to you, reward, then immediately send her back out to continue playing. Do this more frequently than you call her to come when you want to do something less rewarding, like leave the park or go inside from the yard. As long as coming to you is very rewarding most times she does it, she will be happy to do it.

Dog Health Questions: Who is being unreasonable about the dog?

We have four dogs, and one of the dogs started fighting with two of the other dogs. At first we kept the dog in a crate in the living room during the from 7 am to 9 pm because at 9 I had to go sit in the basement with the other dogs. We tried dog training it didn't work. We tried to give the dog away it didn't work (the dog is aggressive toward men he doesn't know). We tried to give the dog to rescue groups they wouldn't take him (he also bit a girl once when he got out of the yard). My mom and I no longer felt comfortable with the dog living with the dog, and thought we should euthanize the dog, and just be happy with the three dogs that get along. My dad got upset and took the dog to a boarding kennel were he thinks the dog should live for the rest of its life. This will cost $10 a day for the rest of the dogs life, and it is only five. He also now spends 4-5 hours a day in the car with or walking the dog. We have never had a lot of money and this would be quite a strain on the finances. Is it unreasonable to ask him to have the dog put down to help relieve the tension in the house? Or is he being unreasonable?

From puppies they are raised to associate certain scents with rewards like play time and praise (though usually not food because then the dog learns to search for food). They do this by watching when every the puppy sniffs the target they reward them. The puppy starts to associate the smell with rewards and then will start to search for that smell. The puppies are trained daily for the next 6+ months.

Then the trainer starts hiding the smells and giving a command to go search. At first this command means nothing to the puppy because they haven't yet associated it with being told to search but when it recognizes the scent and goes to it they get excited and get their reward.

Next the trainer usually trains the puppy to give a signal like a bark or to lay down when it finds the source of the scent. This is easily done by commanding the dog to bark or lay down before they get their reward and after finding the scent.

Not all dogs can be trained to be scent dogs however even if they are specifically bred for that purpose like blood hounds. The puppy needs to be subordinate because then they are easier to train and love working towards pleasing the handler. The dog has to also be easily trained. So to raise the likely hood of producing a trained scent dog they usually start off with training 2-4 puppies. Usually after 2 weeks to 1 month of training with the puppy the trainer will be able to know which puppies are doing the best in the training and then they focus on those puppies and the others may stop the training.

my dog ive only had for a year, i got her from a family member who got her from a church(the family member had her for 10 years i think) so she is 11 in human and 77 in dog years. she doesnt listen all that well and i need to think of good ways to teach her to listen i still have to put the leash on her to potty and when she sees other animals *except kittens* she wants to attack, and when we do go places like the park she barks at every one in site and wont stop till i repremend her a few times. she is a silky terrier, so she is relativly small. what should i do about her behavior. i want to train her so that my parents let me take her places more often. she is the #1 thing in my life so it would be great if i could have some hints on how to get her to respect. (and stop begging for food at dinner time or n/e other time we have foodXD) thanks!

Wow...your dog has been uprooted a bit and the first owners probably didn't socialize or train her right. At her age it will be difficult to break her habits.
She obviously wasn't trained to socialize with other dogs so unless you have a friend who has a dog and wants to help, you may have to put up with it. If you know someone who can bring their dog over, first important thing is to meet in a neutral place. Your dog will not learn in "it's den when it would expect respect from the other dog". Keep your dog on a leash but let them sniff each other and be quick to correct her if she tries to attach the other dog.
Sounds like she was fed food scraps and that's why she begs at the table. 10 years of a habit is not easy to break. If you have a small crate, put her in it during dinner and after you have eaten, let her out and prepare her dinner. Be sure she sees you giving it to her. This not only lets her know you are giving her what she's getting and nothing more but that you are the "food catcher" and therefore higher in the pack than she.
Go to the library and get dog training books. One good book to buy (I'm sure you'll have other dogs in years to come) is "Dogs for Dummies" - it's excellent.
She may also be hard of hearing - check with the vet.
She's had 11 years of doing things one way so breaking these habits may be impossible. Just be glad - her habits could be much, much worse.
You could try a private dog trainer - even paying for a one day consult, you'd learn a lot to try at home.
Unfortunately when we get an animal we tend to baby it. It's quite possible it was owned by elderly people who treated it like their baby and spoiled it rotten. Unfortunately if you outlive your dog (or if they had to go to a nursing home) then those habits are ingrained. And bad habits are the reason most dogs are turned into animal control and euthanized........all human error.
Please don't give up on her. I'll be praying for you.

p.s. please don't use a pinch collar or anything other than a haltie to correct her lunging. They make it so much easier to control your dog and are the kindest type.

• sounds like she did not get socialized as a puppy. her need to bark is part of her breed. terriers vermon dogs and were trained to bark when the found them. but bring her to the park and when she barks lightly hold your hands over mouth keeping it closed and tell her no. there is a pressure point here on dogs. it wont hurt them but send a singnal that your the boss.when u get her barking under control start allowing her to great other dogs if the owners say it is ok. if she growls grp her mouth and tell her no.

Be very careful with what you expose your puppy to. What is imprinted into the brain as a puppy usually stays with them for life. That includes very loud noises so stop dragging the garbage cans around.

You may have to go easy with the skateboard for a while and don't take your dog with you until he is at least a year old. In the meantime, put the treats directly on the skateboard and roll it very slowly with your hand. Keep the noise level way down. It helps if you have the skateboard close by when you are playing with his favourite toy. That will also associate the skateboard with a good experience. When he is lying down in the yard then gently roll the skateboard with your hands slowly past him. Stay about 2 metres away and first and see how he reacts. If he stays calm then reward him. Move it closer in over time, again slowly.

Once he is used to that then you can get on the skateboard and go past him. Again, a good distance away. Get closer if he remains calm and reward him with a treat.

This might take just a few weeks or it might take a few months. It depends on how scared he is of the skateboard right now.

Another tip, if you get thunderstorms then act normally. Play with your dog with his favourite toy. If he is barking or whining then just ignore him. Don't cuddle him or pat him as that's rewarding him for being afraid.

Dog Training With A Clicker

• make sure you expose him to noise at all times you can. Loud bangs, crashes ect. make sure he is on a leash in case he tries to run. You can teach him as soon as he hears a loud noise to sit (with treats). You need to redirect his attention from the loud noise with training. They love to train and need it! Also exercise him a lot and it will help. It will take time but have patience. good luck
