Dog Health Questions: How Do I Stop My Dog From Biting?

My dob Bite My Brother Today when He was out side. and i don't want him to do it again. How Do I prevent it.
Also
How do you stop him from scratching people? He is a Golden Retriever/Lab mix
About 4 months old.Don't put call a dog whisperer or take him to dog training classes.

ONLY REASONABLE ANSWERS.
I AM SERIOUS ABOUT THIS.

Dog Training Evolution

Recommended Answer:
Did he bite your brother hard or did he just nip at him? Puppies at that age usually nip, because they are teething, like any other baby. They're also still in the process of learning bite inhibition, and he probably didn't learn it that well while he was with his litter. When weaned too early, the dog can't learn things that would train him to behave better later.

Although you wish for me to not answer "take him to dog training classes", you'd actually be surprised by the results -- when finding the right trainer. You could multitask and also teach him how to appropriately answer to "no".

If you really would prefer to do it yourself, I suggest clicker training. Allow to have someone used as "the victim". Take your dog outside and let your brother go outside. If the dog goes at your brother, make a startling noise. Puppies have short attention span, and you should take that into BIG consideration. If you make a noise (clap your hands loudly or whistle if you can), it'll startle the dog and he won't go after your brother. When he stops and looks at you, CLICK, then give him a treat and PRAISE LIKE CRAZY. Then when he is used to the clicker training, start associating the noise with "no". Stop using the noise and just say "no". See if that works. Keep doing this until your dog learns to keep their distance and to follow your command.

Basic Dog Training - Timing And Body Language

  • The way I have stopped the two dogs that I have trained not to bite is when they do bite or attempt to bite I grab the roof of there mouth and gently apply pressure and say no. Do not apply t much pressure because you are causing the gums to be pushed onto the teeth essentially causing your dog to bite itself, so be gentle.

  • According to our PetSmart trainer, your puppy needs to be able to bite you. But they have to learn the difference between a soft bite, medium bite, and hard bite. When your puppy bites you to hard, you or who ever it is, needs to let out a loud yelp to let them know that hurts. The same way if your dog is playing with another dog and your dog bites this other dog really hard, that dog yelps out loud. They need to learn the difference between the bites. I have been screaching and yelping with my dog when she bites to hard for the past 3 weeks and she really has cut down on biting me hard, whether she is laying or not. Good luck to you!

Dog Health Questions: Who is being unreasonable about the dog?

We have four dogs, and one of the dogs started fighting with two of the other dogs. At first we kept the dog in a crate in the living room during the from 7 am to 9 pm because at 9 I had to go sit in the basement with the other dogs. We tried dog training it didn't work. We tried to give the dog away it didn't work (the dog is aggressive toward men he doesn't know). We tried to give the dog to rescue groups they wouldn't take him (he also bit a girl once when he got out of the yard). My mom and I no longer felt comfortable with the dog living with the dog, and thought we should euthanize the dog, and just be happy with the three dogs that get along. My dad got upset and took the dog to a boarding kennel were he thinks the dog should live for the rest of its life. This will cost $10 a day for the rest of the dogs life, and it is only five. He also now spends 4-5 hours a day in the car with or walking the dog. We have never had a lot of money and this would be quite a strain on the finances. Is it unreasonable to ask him to have the dog put down to help relieve the tension in the house? Or is he being unreasonable?

No-No Dog Training Techniques

Recommended Answer:
Your dad is 100% wrong.
And I think a dog like that (biter) should be put down, too.

Revealed - Boxer Dog Training Secrets

  • I am a dog lover and I hate to say it but the dog needs to be put down he is to aggressive and may attack the handlers at the kennel. Then your family would be responsible and you could be out a lot more money. Tell your dad that you know that he loves the dog and that it is hard to do the right thing but the family is more important.

  • why not put an add in the paper and make it clear that it would go to a home without any other dogs or kids. someone would take it. if you insist on having a dog your father loves put down it will only cause more problems. the dog doesn't know who the boss is, he thinks he is the alpha. you have to find a way of showing the dog who the boss is.

  • Well U did "all the right things" and now it is time to let go of the dog. Putting it down is the most humane thing to do at this point. Your father is going overboard here. The world is too full of friendly dogs that need homes to keep an aggressive one alive at great expense.
Maybe there is something else going on here? Is he trying to proven someone else in the family wrong? What U R describing is not normal.

  • His attachment is understandable, and I've seen my husband do the same. Once the dog has bitten a kid, the dog has got to go. He bears part of the responsibility for not training properly and he will have to bear the burden of the loss.

  • we have 3 pittbulls. everyone knows the reputation they have.we didn't raise them like that tho. our dogs were raised with kids in the house and family. they are very loving and loyal dogs but if i thought one of them would turn the way you've described i would have them put down.

  • Time for a trip to puppy lake?

Don't get me wrong... I love dogs, but what else is there to do with a dog like that?

    The Dog Whisperer?

  • Why doesn't he pay for it. Just tell the kennel that the dog is no longer yours and that your dad will be paying the bill.

  • Whose paying for this?

If its him - not much you can do

  • Sounds like he loves the dog. We had a dog for 4 years. He was a great dog. When we had the baby, he started growling at everyone. My husband didn't want to give him away. He actually blamed me. "How comes he only does it when I'm not around?" In other words, it was something I was doing. One day, the dog bit him. Didn't need stitches, but quite bloody. It took me getting bit 3 x for him to actually believe that there was a problem. I took a picture of all the blood on the carpet, before I cleaned it up. The dog shouldn't be crated up for all that time without exercise. Buy a muzzle. If you dad insists on keeping him, put a dog run in the back yard. Have a high fence, and dog house. It's you dad's job to take care of him. It would be cheaper than a kennel. Try a different trainer. Make sure the dog doesn't have any medical problems.

We gave our $800 Royal Hound Beagle to someone who could give him more exercise. He wasn't happy at home. Something had to change.

  • I think that this is the cruelest thing you could ever do to the dog. Take him to a SPCA shelter and let them adopt him out to someone who may be very kind to the dog and where there are no other dogs to compete with and let the dog have a good life . It is all how you handle things and if you can not handle it and your husband does not have the time then take it to the shelter and give it a chance at life. They do not euthanize , it is not their policy to do so.

Dog Health Questions: Your dog's favourite tunes :-) ?

Hiya :-) ! Have got a very cute 4 month-old Bernersennen-Border Collie-puppy. We will normally get her into dog training next week :-) ... am sure she will enjoy it because she is very lively, of course.

Now, sometimes she gets very nervous as well. I love music and I think that classical music must be as good for animals as it is for human beings. She seemed to like Mozart's Clarinet Concerto in A, the Andante part, totally, as she fell peacefully asleep. At the beginning, she also liked meditation music with nature's sounds.

Any more tunes, songs or ideas? Thank you very much and Have a Happy Easter :-) !

Vanessa Mae's albums are pretty good and Enya is always a relaxer. Canon in D is nice and relaxing. My dog could sleep through anything though, and doesn't seem to have a song preference. He's more interested in neighborhood dog gossip.

My one cat enjoys the Superman Theme, the Imperial March, Blue Shadows on the Trail by Roy Rogers, and the whistling song from the Kill Bill movies.

Dog Health Questions: I got a puppy and am training her to be a Service dog...?

I was talking to my psychiatrist who said I would benefit from a psychiatric service dog and asked me if I would like one. I said yes and he told me I could train my own or go to a service dog training facility and be on a wait list for a professionally trained one. I told him I'd rather train my own for my specific needs and he agreed. I now have a 4 month old Border Collie mix recommended by a Service dog training facility in my area. I was wondering where I should start and how I should go about training her. She is very Intelligent and has already learned; sit, stay, lay down, come, leave it, drop it, take it, pick up (to pick up things I drop because I'm also physical handicapped), Light (to turn the light on or off), and heel. I just really want to do this right so if you can possibly help me as of how to go about doing this I'd be greatly appreciative. I am very set on training her myself so please don't tell me to seek Professional help, though I have very supportive friends and family helping my with this too since some days I can deal with training better then others.

House Dog Training Secrets and Dog Food Secrets Revealed

Recommended Answer:
eelak, please give it a break.

You cannot learn how to train a service dog over the internet, and especially not from Yahoo Answers. Getting a new account and posting the same questions is going to get the same answers.

Friends and family who don't know squat about dog training are not going to be a help. If you do not already have extensive experience training dogs, then you really do have to hire a professional. Like it or not, that's the way it is.

Hon, you very very clearly do not have the skill needed. You should get a dog from a program. You say that's an option. TAKE IT. But choose some other agency than the one that recommended a border collie husky cross with separation anxiety as a service dog candidate because that's way too much anxiety in a dog meant to work with someone who is mentally ill.

Your story changes, just slightly, but incessantly every few hours. It's very tiring. Mental disability, physical. Have a professional trainer, don't have a pro trainer. Pro trainer won't answer questions. Local facility that takes months to place a dog it takes 2 years to train. Dog that comes when called but won't stay by you outside your yard. Now dog doesn't come when called (see other recent question). Dog that retrieves, but doesn't actually bring what you want (translation: a thieving puppy--very common behavior in puppies).

She doesn't know come if you have to ask how to train a recall. That's what a recall is:
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;…

Take it and "pick up" are the same thing and she doesn't know it because she doesn't pick up what you want. She doesn't know "leave it" either, or she wouldn't be picking up things you don't want. She doesn't know how to heel or you wouldn't have trouble with her getting distracted and trying to run off.

And you can't study for the CPDT online. You have to work with an experienced trainer in person to build up the recommendation and the number of hours of experience needed to qualify to take the written exam, which is not based on YahooAnswers and is not open book. You have to actually read the reading list, and those are all real books, books you won't find at the public library and will need to purchase.

If you need attention because you are lonely, there are far better (healthier) ways to get it. If you need a service dog, again, there is a better way (from a program).

Cooperative Tips on Dog Training

  • Hello eelak, new account? I see something here that I also see on your profile:
    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Ao0Fc9pK_Gmh13HXBLdP23UjzKIX;_ylv=3?qid=20101008170819AAER6vr

Amazing that nothing you've already been told has sunk in yet. Keep asking, no one is going to change their answers to indulge you. Keep an eye on your details too... parts of your story are starting to fall apart. ;)

  • i would contact a service dog trainer and ask what all i should train to be certified
then i would train what else helps me.

  • Hon, I've been following your postings and notice you switch identity and then ask the same questions over and over. You're going to have to stand on your own 2 feet here, and begin seeking your information you claim you want from real people in your community.

You aren't in a position to begin training a dog for anything. You don't listen to your elders, you don't listen to professionals' suggestions, you aren't willing to accept your limitations of refusing to listen to reason!

I know you love your dogs dearly! But until you find the attention you are seeking in your community rather than on-line, you just aren't ready for the level of responsibility training a working dog requires!

Advanced Dog Training Goals - It Pays to Think and Plan Ahead

Recommended Answer:
Register the dog in an obedience class. Training should be hands on where an instructor can see what you are doing and give you tips.

Some Helpful Tips To Help You With Your Dog Training Abilities

  • Nope - because in the end, it's JUST a television show that has been edited for time/space and is usually hosted by GREAT actors and dog lovers. You don't see behind the scenes OR actual timelines. Utterly useless, in my opinion, though fun to watch i suppose.

If you want training, go to a trainer with titled dogs and PROOF of quality. Very few trainers hand out free copies of training methods.....

  • These aren't the full episodes (not sure you can watch them anywhere other than on TV) but I love this show called It's Me or the Dog. They show it on Animal Planet, here are some clips:

    http://animal.discovery.com/videos/its-m…

    Hope I helped! :]

  • if you have cox than channel 72 animal planet me or the dog is GREAT you can even sign up for the spot for victoria to come and train you dog!:) :) :) :)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dog Health Questions: Police Dog Training?

I want to write a story about a police dog and I want it to be realistic, but I don't really know that much about police dog training. The story will follow a German Shepherd puppy from the time it's a puppy to when it's a police dog or soon after that. I have a few questions about the training.

1) Are there ever any mutts or mixed breeds that go through police dog training and become a police dog?
2) What are the stages and details of training that a police dog will go through?

Answers will be much apprectiated. <3

Can I Train My Dog Without a Dog Training Course?

Recommended Answer:
Ok, please forgive some of the answers you were given here today. The vast majority of depts will only use pure breed dogs because of the better selection afforded with them and also because of guarantees as far as the health of the dog. While there have been some mutts used in detection work, the majority are pure breeds. Not every dog can be a detection dog and, no, Sch dogs are not police dogs nor do they receive the same training as police dogs. Sch is a game, police work is the real thing.
Most police dogs are born in Europe where they are raised and titled in a sport to prove SOME of their worthiness toward training for the real thing. Some depts will purchase these dogs as "green" dogs, meaning the dog has proven his ability to undergo the training required to become a police dog, but it's not yet trained, and some depts will buy from a trainer that has already trained the dog and now will train the handler. Most depts prefer to do their own training for liability reasons. The dogs will undergo a 12 week training program that will teach them the following disciplines:
Obedience, agility, tracking, building search, area search, article search and protection/criminal apprehension. Once the dog passes certification with his handler and starts working the street, he may or may not attend further schooling in explosives or narcotics detection, depending on the depts needs. Most police dogs work til the age of 8-9 and then retire to the handler's home. If you need more, specific info, feel free to let me know. I hope this helped.

Find Out About Purchasing Yourself Some Dog Training Books, They Could Really Be Quite Helpful

  • any dog can be a police dog
    www.smokeveil.blogspot.com

  • I don't know either but if I were You I start with your cities police k-nine Unit they would definitely know the answers.

  • the dog can be of any, they are super attached to their owners and would attack at one single word or movement, depends on what they were trained with, a dog i had i did turn over to the force for just that reason, he was to over protective of me and neighbors that partied he was almost ready to hang self just to get to them over their drug use, so in this case the dog trained his self.

  • I have worked around several Police K-9s and have never seen anything other than a purebred. Most I have known were trained in different countries then came to the states. The handlers are then sent to a training course with the dogs that lasts several weeks. Your best bet is to contact your local police or sheriff and ask if there is anyone you can talk to. If you are old enough you might even be able to request a ride-a-long with a K-9 unit depending on their department policy. Good luck and I hope that helps a little.

  • You'll want to google SCHUZTHUND - that's the name of the training discipline that is taught to police dogs.
There are mixed breeds used VERY occasionally by police depts but mostly in not in with the street officers. You'll see mutt or mixed breeds used in the field for drug sniffing, bomb detection - because any dog can do that, its about DESIRE to use its nose in a certain way that determines a drug sniffer dog. Being a MANSTOPPER - that's what the old time trainers call the temperment needed to be a police dog requires a certain confidence, bred in temperment and high prey drive. Belgian Malinois' are the dog of choice right now for many police depts because they are proving to be healthier, easy to train and more athletic than the heavier GSD. Good luck with your story.
There should be video available so you can see the competitions and the training that's involved in teaching a dog to think and assess a situation on its own.

Dog Health Questions: Is my dog training my puppy for me?

I have a 2-year-old Cocker Spaniel and we just adopted a 10 week old puppy (border collie/lab who is already bigger than the cocker).

Anyway, we are crate training the puppy. We don't yet have a crate for the puppy, so we are using the cocker's crate and letting him be out at night and during the day (he is very well housetrained).

Last night, in the crate for the first time, the puppy (a border collie/lab mix who is already bigger than my cocker) was whining and yelping. We tried to ignore it, and then we tried to tell him no be quiet, but he just kept on for 5 minutes.

My cocker was sleeping next to me and ran over there a few times. Finally, he got down, laid under the bed near the crate, and issued a few low growls at the puppy. That puppy didn't make one sound after that all night!

My dog just trained him to be quiet in the crate! Have you seen this before? Is that what he was doing? Has this got to do with being dominant or because we were upset?

Dog Training How Tos - Laying a Solid Foundation

Recommended Answer:
well you have two intelligent animals and yes the one is teaching the other. The pup just don't like being alone and the older one will reflect on the younger one, thus teaching the same habbits of what it was taught.

Important Dog Training Information

  • your dog might have been annoyed by the whining and being that he's more the dominant one, then yes he's showing your new puppy the ropes.

  • Your cocker spaniel is probably just annoyed. Mom dogs growl at their puppies when they do things that are not liked too.

  • I know for sure that an older dog can train puppy's. My little Chi/Rat Terrier was 5 years old when I got my Beagle pup. I have a dog door so the dogs can go in and out as they please. The little pup would follow the Rat around. The Rat taught the pup to go outside to do his business. I did not have to house train the Beagle. The same thing happened about six month later when I got an APBT. The two older dogs trained her for me.
