Dog Health Questions: I want to train a service dog! Please help!?

Hi! I really want yo train a service dog, but a few problems...
1) My parents don't want me to
2) They don't like dogs in the house
3) They don't want to take a dog everywhere
4) Worried I won't 'Stick to It'

I've already said it would look good on a college application, teach me responsability, and other reason's like that, but they won't budge! This has be my life long dream, and I want to start ASAP! I've thought of maybe rescuing a dog (Yeah, they are actually considering letting me do that) saying I'm going to adopt it out again (because I would get it from a kill animal shelter), then really train it and contact a service dog training facility. I've thought of doing that, but, wouldn't that be lying? Please help!

Well, sort of a few days ago. I just got a Dobe pup about 2 weeks ago. (She's 5 months old, today) While her previous owners did pretty much nothing with her, she has been doing very good on a leash except for TWO things. One of our neighbors also got a Dobe pup recently, and just had it's ears cropped. Well, when our new girl, Ava, saw him with the ears posted and e-collar on, she did not like it one bit. (pretty much acted like a maniac) Also, when walking her (not the same day), she was fine with another neighbor mowing his lawn, but couldn't figure out which direction to go AFTER we passed the guy up. She is getting corrections for this, and praise when due, but I guess I'm still going *easy* on her as she is new to us, and did not come from a family that was she was best suited for. (obviously, they bought a pup and figured out that it was too much work, between the man flipping houses, the woman going back to school, and the two grade school aged kids) Well, their loss is my gain. She makes #9 for me. I did NOT put the dog away, and we ARE using a choke chain. We just keep on moving....slow, fast, inside turns, outside turns, 360's, and sit at stopping on the heel command and before crossing streets, etc. I do, however, have some of her kibble in my pocket, not any special treats.

I'm talking about dog trainers who have the "natural ability" to understand every dogs' temperament, behaviour and so on and are able to successfully train each and every one of them, using whatever methods that work for each dog, in all kinds of environments.

Is the "natural ability" to train dogs so much like the "natural ability" to sing very well and do all kinds of fantastic bending like Christina Aguilera does? I doubt she has ever gone to any singing classes to sing so well. My cousins uncle used to have a male rottweiler and it grew up to his hips (note the owner was built and tall) and was VERY big !!   Dobermans are alright; when doberman comes into my head i dnt think of it as mean and dangerous as the other 2, but like i sed you can train any dog but at some age the dog wud turn its back onto you and you dnt want that....

  If you need an “insider/outsider “ – Black Russian Terrier is the best.
  Rottweiler, Doberman, Pitbull all of them are aggressive and offensive they won't let a strangers inside, they bark a lot and loud, and might bite or even worse.
  BRT will let the strangers inside, but won't let them outside without harm until the owner comes back. BRT won't bark a lot, and great nanny for kids. BRT are very smart, strong and lovely.

  I don't think anyone would attack/rob you with one of those breeds around, but make sure you get a good headstart on training. Don't let the dog control you. I'd suggest a puppy so you can build a good dog-trainer relationship, but certainly don't count out shelters.

So,, this summer I'm seriously thinking about earning some money the way most early teens do; baby-sitting. But I also want to let my clients know that I will train and pet-sit their animals as well.

I've never made my own money before,, so I'm coming here asking what you think good starting rates are for what I'll be doing.

I was thinking something like;

For the different tricks I know how to teach,, I was thinking of listing each one and depending on the difficulty,, decide seperate prices for each one.

I'm a fan of powerful dogs, and, in the future, would love to have dogs trained in Schutzhund. I have read up on the basic concept, but would love some more in depth detail from someone with experience, such as what age is best to start training, what breeds are the best to work with, what traits to look for in potential dogs, etc. Just basically everything and anything. The original Schutzhund dog is german shepherds! The breeder that created the first german shepherds wanted a sport to test his dogs and prove their worthiness. Thus Schutzhund was born.

I would suggest finding a local schutzhund club, talking to them, and attending their training meetings. Although you can easily train the obedience and tracking parts of schutzhund on your own and with other trainers, the protection part should be worked on with someone very familiar with schutzhund and protection training. A club will also help you find a good dog, when you decide you are ready. Although you can technically work with just about any breed (watching a bernese mountain dog waddle across the schutzhund field is just so funny), the dog needs the right drive and sound temperment and physical body structure to do it. Most schutzhund clubs have at least one or two members who are trainers as well, and they will be most helpful in getting your dog.

As for training, start as soon as you get the puppy. 4 months, IMHO, is way too old to just be starting training (if you've had the dog from an earlier age, that is). Studies show that dogs can start learning as young as 4 weeks, so starting basic obedience when you get an 8 week old puppy is perfectly fine. I got my 2 year old shepherd at 7 weeks, and by 9 weeks he knew sit, down, stay, and come. You also want to start basic puppy classes as soon as possible (usually around 10 weeks old). Socilization is vital, especially to the commen working and herding breeds used in schutzhund (shepherds, malinois, and dobermans).

• Start taking your dog to obedience classes at say 4 months. Do not expect huge things at this early age. This is socialization for your dog, which is VITAL for stability.

Some of the best breeds I've seen doing it are German Shepards, Cane Corso and Pits. What breed are you interested in? It is so much fun to see how much the dogs enjoy to be worked!
  
  ADD: The breeds you listed would definitely excel in the sport provided they come from reputable breeders! If you are interested in the sport your best bet would be to contact breeders in your area who will help you find a breeder with the best working lines. That way when you do go to buy your dog you will know exactly where you should get it from :) That breeder should also be able to help you with training, finding a trainer and helping you throughout your dogs life.

Dog Health Questions: I got a puppy and am training her to be a Service dog...?

I was talking to my psychiatrist who said I would benefit from a psychiatric service dog and asked me if I would like one. I said yes and he told me I could train my own or go to a service dog training facility and be on a wait list for a professionally trained one. I told him I'd rather train my own for my specific needs and he agreed. I now have a 4 month old Border Collie mix recommended by a Service dog training facility in my area. I was wondering where I should start and how I should go about training her. She is very Intelligent and has already learned; sit, stay, lay down, come, leave it, drop it, take it, pick up (to pick up things I drop because I'm also physical handicapped), Light (to turn the light on or off), and heel. You cannot learn how to train a service dog over the internet, and especially not from Yahoo Answers. Getting a new account and posting the same questions is going to get the same answers.

Friends and family who don't know squat about dog training are not going to be a help. If you do not already have extensive experience training dogs, then you really do have to hire a professional. Like it or not, that's the way it is.

Hon, you very very clearly do not have the skill needed. You should get a dog from a program. You say that's an option. TAKE IT. But choose some other agency than the one that recommended a border collie husky cross with separation anxiety as a service dog candidate because that's way too much anxiety in a dog meant to work with someone who is mentally ill.

Your story changes, just slightly, but incessantly every few hours. It's very tiring. Mental disability, physical. Have a professional trainer, don't have a pro trainer. Pro trainer won't answer questions. Local facility that takes months to place a dog it takes 2 years to train. Dog that comes when called but won't stay by you outside your yard. Now dog doesn't come when called (see other recent question). Dog that retrieves, but doesn't actually bring what you want (translation: a thieving puppy--very common behavior in puppies).

Take it and "pick up" are the same thing and she doesn't know it because she doesn't pick up what you want. She doesn't know "leave it" either, or she wouldn't be picking up things you don't want. She doesn't know how to heel or you wouldn't have trouble with her getting distracted and trying to run off.

And you can't study for the CPDT online. You have to work with an experienced trainer in person to build up the recommendation and the number of hours of experience needed to qualify to take the written exam, which is not based on YahooAnswers and is not open book. You have to actually read the reading list, and those are all real books, books you won't find at the public library and will need to purchase.

If you need attention because you are lonely, there are far better (healthier) ways to get it. If you need a service dog, again, there is a better way (from a program).

Dog Health Questions: Dog Training Advice Needed?

A friend on mine lives in a very horrible area, extremely ghetto.
He has two dogs he wants to train to protect him. He's been keeping the dogs with him 24/7 and they are only 13 weeks old.
He doesn't like anyone touching them or giving them treats because he doesn't want them to like other people. He loves them but is there another route to training them to be guard/protection dogs? I can tell he hates keeping them cooped up everyday in either his bedroom ( he is 17 ) or in the yard for bathroom breaks.

  Don't expect too much of a puppy, but do set ground rules from the very beginning and follow them- consistency is key.
  
  The most important things a puppy can learn are "good dog", "No!", and the connection between those phrases and their actions.
  
  Reward or punishment, for a puppy, should be immediate. If the puppy sits, then thinks about something else or does something else, and then you reward him, the pup has no idea why you're doing it. Make it easy for the dog to see the connection- the younger the puppy, the faster the response has to be.

Dog Health Questions: I wanna start a service dog training business?

After I finish Burgin University of Canine studies I want to start a service dog training business (a small one) Does anyone have any advice, instructions, coments etc.
Especially about licencing, I dont know what I'll need to licence get inspected or anything else.
Oh yeah n I live in Alaska so if u know anything about licencing in Alaska tell me.
Cause ofcoarse ill have to breed my own dogs. And i think that needs a licence, but i dont know how to get any licences.

I cannot tell you about the laws in Alaska as I don't live there. However, I do know about dog training businesses and not just training service dogs. Some questions:
How many dogs have you trained?
What did you train them to do?
Were these dogs very reliable in their training ie bomb proof?
Have you trained dogs for other people?
Have you ever trained a person to do something that was difficult for him to do?
Have you been around disabled people?
Do you understand the needs of the disabled population and how having a service dog may improve their quality of life?
If you cannot answer these questions with experience and knowledge, your best bet is to start working with someone who trains service dogs as well as someone who works for the population of people that you are trying to serve. Remember you each dog comes attached to an owner. so you need to be able to relate to the people that you are trying to teach how to use a service dog.

Dog Health Questions: Question about dog training?

my mom has trained dogs for years, she has won loads of dog competitions. She entered our 3 year old basset hound in a competition just last year and won. Were getting a puppy in a week and my mom says she wants me to have a go at training it up so it can be a show dog like our other dog. She says i will have to start training him from the age of around 3-4 months. Im only fourteen and have no idea where to start with the little guy. My mom said she will give me tips but she cant help me train him because the dog will then have more respect for her and not me. I like the idea of becoming a world champion in dog training, it seems pretty cool.
where do i start? shall i research on the internet?

I would expect that your mom can either recommend a good obedience class for you, or some good training books, or even instruct you (not the dog) herself.

But if not, talk to the other people at the trials and see who they recommend in terms of instruction. It's really better to have an experienced instructor to guide you in training your first dog, it's so easy to make mistakes when you're a beginner - especially when working with non-traditional breeds like Bassets.

I started training on my own at 15 - none of my family were "dog people" so I pretty much had to learn it on my own. You're lucky to have someone experienced to help you.

• You start training from the day your dog comes into your home. I clicker train, so I suggest you buy yourself a clicker (or use a click word) and start clicking!! • Well for training you should start after your puppy has had all its puppy shots, if you are planning to take her to a puppy training class. Dog Health Questions: Dog Training- How do you get your dog to respond to a whistle.?

I have a 7 month old springer spaniel and i have been training him to respond to whistle to get him to come back to me, i have been training hime for the last 2 months and he has been excellent for the last month but recently he has taken to not listening anymore and has started chasing small birds, any tips or advice how to get him to stop chasing the birds and get him to respond to the whistle again, any help would be greatly appreciated

Dog Training Tricks - Is Anyone Training You?

• Ok I'll put on my fire protection gear cause some PETA nuts will explode at my answer:
  BUT I train retrievers to respond to whistle commands in hunting tests. It is necessary for upper level retriever tests so I have experience with this.
  
  First you must TEACH what you want ..."COME" command be sure your dog is thoroughly proofed with distractions to obey the "come"
  Add you whistle pattern (I use 4 toots to come...one for a sit)
  Say 'Fido come" then toot your pattern.
  Rewards when they come
  
  Now once your dog has this down is is fully reliable (takes several days/weeks)...it is time to take him out with big distractions off lead and a fully charged e-collar. (in a safe area)
  If you toot and Fido does not immediately respond..one quick shock to get his attention. Then toot again and loads of praise when they come.
  
  My retrievers often work at 200 yards away from me. I MUST be CERTAIN they respond immediately to my whistle commands at all times...PLUS this can save a dogs life.

It's really not the clicker that provides the magic, but the training principles and method.

Any short, distinct sound should work the same as the clicker.
Dog trainers usually use clickers, whale / dolphin trainers use a whistle and goldfish trainers often use a flashing pen light or a training wand.

Studies have shown that a real clicker works better than using your voice. However, if you can't find a clicker, pick a sharp, distinct sounding word and say it in a tone different from how you usually talk to the dog. ("yes!" is commonly used).

You can also make a clicking sound by pressing your tongue against the roof of your mouth -- this is what I usually do with my horses.
