Dog Health Questions: Dog training help !!?

I have a 2 year old German Shepherd that I love very much. She's well behaved for the most part except when she's in our yard she tends to bark and go after dogs that are walking along the side walk. She's never bitten anyone or any dog but it's quite and embarrassment to have to yell after her to come and she doesn't listen. We have an electric fence but she runs right through the shock like it doesn't bother her at all. I hate to have to keep her chained up all the time because she's a big dog and loves running around. Please help on some ideas on how I can train her to stay in the yard.

Dog Health Questions: Beagle training style?

hey all! I'm getting my new beagle puppy in a month's time and I'm planning to start training early.

I just finished browsing for dog training videos, and now I'm quite confused as to which trainer to follow. Some say use the treat system and another trainer say, use praise only. Others say never tug the dog, but another trainer says pop the dog's leash to "snap him back to focus".. I dunno who I should be listening to.. I'm considering

3. Don Sullivan

from your personal experiences, which trainer should I follow? Or if he's not in the choices above, which trainer would you recommend? :)

Dog Training Aids and Tools Work! Just Learn How to Use Them

I strongly recommend against Cesar Millan, Leerburg, and Don Sullivan.

They are dominance trainers. A dominance trainer basically uses the outdated dominance-submission methodology. 30 years ago most dog trainers and experts believed this was the proper way to train a dog. Dominance training involves asserting that you as the human must be "alpha" over your dog. This can mean leash jerking, alpha rolling, and other harsh punitive methods.

However the best dog trainers and dog behaviorists now strongly recommend against using dominance training.

Modern science, regardless of what many dominance trainers may tell you, shows us that dogs respond best to positive training methods only.

Positive methods work because it doesn't suppress a dog's behavior, but actually changes the way the dog feels about a situation. Food is a powerful motivator. Some dogs are not food motivated, so toys and play can be just as powerful for some dogs. Contrary to what some may tell you, most dogs are not praise motivated. Some are, but they are few and far between.

Leash jerking and other punitive methods actually cause psychological damage to a dog. The dog does not respond because he or she wants to do the behavior, but because he or she is afraid of what will happen if disobedient.

The trainer that I personally would recommend is Victoria Stilwell. She is the one of the top dog trainers in the UK and US.

Remember, dogs enjoy an upbeat, positive leader vs a harsh, dominating "alpha." Stick with what science says is the best method to train your dog, not what someone else says is the best method to train a dog.

  The way to get a hound to do most anything is with food, also you can use play. So when the up does something once or twice, break out into a game. Puppies have short attention spans, so keep it short, always finish with the dog happy and wanting more.
  
  I will tell you, that if you correction based methods with a hound, you will get nothing out of him. Hounds don't respond well to correction based methods, they usually just shut down. You especially would not use a correction based method on a puppy.
  
  You don't need to use any of these guys programs. You need to figure out what will work for your pup. All dogs are individuals, some are soft and sensative others not.
  
  I suggest, pick up a clicker and learn how to use it. Teach your pup a lot of behaviors using the clicker. Believe me, the pup will offer a lot of behaviors once he figures out the game.
  
  As you donig this, I would locate a good obedience training class, one that uses mostly positive methods. This way, the instructor can help you learn to comunicate better with your pup and you will have a better relationship.

Dog Health Questions: Fast dog training?

We have a 10 month old dobie/rott mix girl. She is awesome. But she has NO respect at all, when she runs after the kids she knocks them down, same with anyone who comes in our door. She is starting to be a safety hazard. She is fixed with tons of love and attn. Camping season is here and we need something fast to train her, pet stores said it would take a while for her to start learning. We have has her since 3 weeks old. The Importance of Dog Training

OK what you have is probably from the working lines of the dobies or rotts... It is called prey drive or referred to as play drive.

Take 2 tennis balls and throw out one.. when she gets to it call ***here*** when she brings that back tell her to drop - as soon as she does= throw the other ball.. repeat often but not until she is tired = stop before she wants to then take the balls and put them both up. They are your toys = you are now training her plus becoming the alpha... somewhat.

Next. teach her to sit and down using food... once she learns this.. whenever she gets ***too much*** give her the order to sit or down... give her a command.. eventually even the *here* will turn her around to come back to you. The sits and down can be used in the ball playing too. Once she learns the commands change it all up and about as you play ball...

  Rotties are great, but stubborn and they will take the alpha position if you do not, which sounds like what happened here.
  
  I highly suggest you find a trainer with Rott or bully breed experience. You and the dog will be trained, as training of rotties is tweeked for their particular behavior problems.
  
  Once you know the proper way to work with you dog, the training will go much easier, though you cant be gauranteed a quick fix here.


• If you've had her since she was 3 weeks old, she's missed out on a crucial month of socializing and learning limits with her mother and litter mates. Dog training is an on-going process for the life of a dog. You don't ignore a dog's training needs for the first 10 months of its life and then expect some kind of a quick fix.
  
  If you're going camping with her, you need to keep her on a leash, on tie-outs in your camping site or crated.
  
  She sounds like she's in desperate need of obedience classes - someone who can teach you how to train your dog. Take her to classes, preferably not at a pet store, but somewhere where the trainers are actually qualified to deal with unruly dogs. You've missed a lot of valuable training time, but better late than never. Sign her up and take her to classes, just don't expect a quick fix.

  All of your respondents are correct --- there ain't no fast fix. But your dog needs rehabilitation, and you , hon , are the one who needs the training. This is an easy fix, not a fast one....The trick is to be consistant.... may take you two weeks. .... watch The Dog Whisperer, on the Nat. Geo Channel, and get Caesar Millan's DVD. If you don't have cable, find someone who does.... The DVD is about $25.... I too, have a dobie/rottie mix, and he's a wonderful dog, and he is now calm and submissive....
  
  Right now, your girl is the alpha in your house--the pack leader----, and you are just being allowed to live there... she is running the show. Get her on a leash, get her tired by taking her for walks, then begin the training... you'll see how it works. If you don't get it, get some help... $200 will be the best money you EVER spent on the little girl you love.
  
  In our area, Petco and Petsmart use his method. If you find someone in the phone book, ask if they use Caesar's method... works everytime hon.... He's the pack leader of 30 dogs, all at once. If he can do it with 30, you can do it with one.


• As someone else said, you got your puppy much too young...perhaps for good reasons. But puppies taken from their dam and littermates before 8 weeks old are much more difficult to train esp. biting and other manners.   Rottweilers are dangerous, too but if you train it VERY gud and i mean VERY gud, you'll be fine. My cousins uncle used to have a male rottweiler and it grew up to his hips (note the owner was built and tall) and was VERY big !! So if you have the money to buy it's food and collars, i prefer rottweiler, otherwise, doberman.
  Dobermans are alright; when doberman comes into my head i dnt think of it as mean and dangerous as the other 2, but like i sed you can train any dog but at some age the dog wud turn its back onto you and you dnt want that....

  Do you need a dog for security outside, inside or both?
  If you need an “insider/outsider “ – Black Russian Terrier is the best.
  Rottweiler, Doberman, Pitbull all of them are aggressive and offensive they won't let a strangers inside, they bark a lot and loud, and might bite or even worse.
  BRT will let the strangers inside, but won't let them outside without harm until the owner comes back. BRT won't bark a lot, and great nanny for kids. BRT are very smart, strong and lovely.

  I don't think anyone would attack/rob you with one of those breeds around, but make sure you get a good headstart on training. Don't let the dog control you. I'd suggest a puppy so you can build a good dog-trainer relationship, but certainly don't count out shelters.

Hello!

So,, this summer I'm seriously thinking about earning some money the way most early teens do; baby-sitting. But I also want to let my clients know that I will train and pet-sit their animals as well.

I've never made my own money before,, so I'm coming here asking what you think good starting rates are for what I'll be doing.

I was thinking something like;

-5.00 an hour for kids
-2.50 an hour for pets

For the different tricks I know how to teach,, I was thinking of listing each one and depending on the difficulty,, decide seperate prices for each one.

Dog Health Questions: Need Dog training tips please.?

So we adopted an adorable little terrier mix about a month ago. For the most part every thing has been great but i could use a little advise. He is very intelligent and does some baside commands like sit, down, stay, come, shake and rollover. He does them excellently when i am in a quit room with him but when we are outside or there are new people around its like he has no attention span at all, he barley even responds to his name when he is distracted, also when he is out in the yard and i try to get him inside and say come he wont come he just starts running when i come near him, trying to play a game. how can i get him to be more obedient when he is outside, playing, or around new people- distracted. He also has some seperation anxiety. He really hates being lest alone and will bark for a while when we leave him in the kitchen alone. I have tried basically evrything- left radio on, left things with my scent for him and he gets plenty of excersise so thats not really the issue. He is fine when we leave him home alone, but when we leave him in a room alone and he knows were in the house he barks for a while, He is crate trained and i have tried leaving him in the crate when we leave the room but is doesnt seem to work. He is great around other dogs and people and only nips when i comb his tail or rear end. He is about 8 months old and i think he is a yorkipoo, or maybe a wirehaired dachsund mix or affen pincher or maybe a cair terrier mix, he is a little black scrappy 7 pound dog. He is also very skinny for his sixe and could put on a couple pounds. I give him two meals a day- solid gold food mixed with some organic wet food we make. I usuually only leave out the food for about an hour but he barley ever eats all of it. Is there a food that will help him put on weight, maybe white bread or rice or something? so basically 3 issues- 1) when distracted doesnt listen to commands like come and sit etc.. 2) Separation Anxiety when left in a room alone 3) Somewhat under weight. Secrets to German Shepherd Dog Training

Recommended Answer:
1) The Terrier breeds are well known for their "selective hearing" and stubborn ways! You are right that he thinks he's playing a game when you try to call him inside and then chase after him, because to him that is EXACTLY what he thinks is happening. You need to make coming inside seem better than staying outside. Start putting him on a leash when you take him out, stay outside for a short time, and then when you're ready to bring him in use an "excited" voice and say "let's go inside!" Lead him inside and then reward him with his favorite treat once you get inside the door. Do this for several days, every time you bring him in. Then, when you're ready to let him out on his own again repeat the same thing...call him with your "excited" voice, squeek a toy, do whatever it takes to get his attention and then offer him whatever his favorite treat is. If you reserve those specific treats only for the times you call him to come in, then hopefully he will realize that the only way he's going to get one is if he comes in without a fight.

2) When he barks from the other room, do you go to him or call out to him? If you do, or if you ever have, even once, then you are rewarding/have rewarded a negative behavior. If he knows that barking or whining will get your attention then he will keep doing it until he gets what he wants. How long have you left him to bark/whine? Sometimes you have to leave them there for a while to let them figure out that no matter how much noise they make, you aren't going to pay them any attention. It sounds mean, I know, but it's the only way you're going to be able to teach him. Find some type of chew-treat that he likes (bully sticks work great) to chew while he's in the other room, and ONLY give it to him during those times. If he associates being left alone with something he likes (the chew-treat) then he won't mind being left alone so much. And when you let him out don't say anything to him, just open the door and let him walk out. If you get him excited or make a big deal out of letting him out then that's what he will want...the "attention" he gets when he gets let out.

3) I feed my puppy Hills Science Diet Puppy food (dry and canned) and she gained healthy weight without getting overweight. It's very important that you feed a puppy food that is formulated specifically for puppies because they require extra protein for growth. Feeding your puppy food you make at home doesn't ensure that he is getting all the nutrients he needs. If your concern is that the food be organic, there are plenty of dog food manufacturers that make organic food. A lot of people say that you should feed your puppy scheduled meals rather than free feeding (leaving food out all day) but if you're concerned that your puppy isn't eating enough it won't hurt him to just leave it out. All dogs are different, and your dog may prefer to nibble throughout the day rather than scarfing down a whole meal just once or twice a day.

• To overcome distractions outside, you're going to have to reward him with some really great treats: tunafish, hotdogs, etc.

  Feeding Commercial Dog Food
  Choose a high quality food by going to a pet supply or feed store and reading the labels. Remember “high five” or “give me five” as you read. The first five ingredients should be meats and vegetables and grains (unless your dog is itchy or chews himself, then go to a grain-free food). The very first ingredient is a meat. A second meat in the top five is very good.
  Not in the top five ingredients is any by-product, corn, wheat, or soy. A by-product is usually very low quality, such as chicken by-products are the feet, beak, and feathers. Not much nutrition there! Corn, wheat, and soy are cheap fillers and not easily metabolized by the dog.
  Use the package feeding guidelines to measure the daily amount of food for your dog's weight. Divide that measured amount into separate meals. Puppies up to 10 or 12 weeks need four meals per day. Older puppies need three meals per day until they are adolescents and stop growing taller. Then the adult dogs can be fed in two meals per day for life.
  At each meal, put the measured amount of food in his dish and add a spoonful or two of warm water to enhance the aroma. Call the dog over and let him eat. In fifteen minutes or when he has cleaned the dish, whichever comes first, take up the dish. He gets no other treats or snacks until the next meal. Training treats can be pieces of his regular kibble.
  This should create a healthy, eager eater.


• All dogs are brilliant performers at home. When you know that he understands the commands at home, take him into another room and get him to strut his stuff again. Hopefully you have a safe fenced garden/yard for a repeat performance, nevertheless you must train him for several weeks before he will work without distractions. After a few weeks, look for a safe fenced area away from home, however if there are other dogs around don't expect him to obey. Wait until there are no other dogs or detraction's around until you do any training away from home. This is a slow process and it will eventually work.
  
  If you want him to be quiet when you leave him in the kitchen, pretend that you are going out. When you are actually leaving him, don't let him see you leave and don't give him the run of the house. If he is allowed to run free, he will feel obliged to guard every room in the house and this will concern him.

  So say, you tell you dog "sit." He sits and you give him a reward, whatever that is. In clicker training, you tell the dog "sit", you click when the dog sits and then you reward. There is an extra step in there.
  
  Most commonly clicker training is used in the beginning of teaching something new to an animal. This helps the animal to understand exactly what you are trying to teach them. Eventually you fade out the clicker once the animal understand the new word, then you just use the reward, and then that becomes random. When you are teaching something new again, back comes the clicker, and then that fades out once the animal knows it and then the reward, and then the reward becomes random.

• Nope - because in the end, it's JUST a television show that has been edited for time/space and is usually hosted by GREAT actors and dog lovers. You don't see behind the scenes OR actual timelines. Utterly useless, in my opinion, though fun to watch i suppose.
  
  If you want training, go to a trainer with titled dogs and PROOF of quality. Very few trainers hand out free copies of training methods.....

It's really not the clicker that provides the magic, but the training principles and method.

Any short, distinct sound should work the same as the clicker.
Dog trainers usually use clickers, whale / dolphin trainers use a whistle and goldfish trainers often use a flashing pen light or a training wand.

Studies have shown that a real clicker works better than using your voice. However, if you can't find a clicker, pick a sharp, distinct sounding word and say it in a tone different from how you usually talk to the dog. ("yes!" is commonly used).

You can also make a clicking sound by pressing your tongue against the roof of your mouth -- this is what I usually do with my horses.
