Dog Health Questions: Is dog training so much like singing?

I'm talking about dog trainers who have the "natural ability" to understand every dogs' temperament, behaviour and so on and are able to successfully train each and every one of them, using whatever methods that work for each dog, in all kinds of environments.

Is the "natural ability" to train dogs so much like the "natural ability" to sing very well and do all kinds of fantastic bending like Christina Aguilera does? I doubt she has ever gone to any singing classes to sing so well. I know some people actually go for singing lessons to learn how to sing properly but no matter how many lessons they have gone to, they can still NEVER sing as well or as naturally like those who HAVE the natural singing ability. They just don't have it in them.

Some people do seem to be natural dog trainers, for many reasons, however it is something you can learn to do well with a lot of work. You need to start with the premise that you want to "work" with your dog, not "dominate" him/her, and then it becomes simple. I've watched training methods go through great changes in the last 10 years, mostly for the better. We've changed the old mentality of "alpha" into "team effort" and it's producing dogs that are happy, love to train, and are doing extremely well in the obedience ring.

  • Even those with natural singing ability have to WORK at it to get anywhere.

Same as dog training - some may be better able to "naturally" read a dog, but training is WORK - lots of consistent, daily WORK. And while the ability to read a dog's body language makes training easier, it's only one small part of the package.

Not having a "natural" ability is no reason not to have a well-trained dog.

  • Natural ability in any field is only part of the equation....you must work to develop that ability.

I have seen natural riders surpassed by less talented people who applied themselves.

The same would be true of dog training.
