Dog Health Questions: How to I get my dog to be good?

I have three dogs. A 180 lbs newfoundland, a 17 lbs shih-tzu, and a shih-tzu puppy. The other dogs are older but the puppy is almost nine monthes. It has never taken us this long to train a dog. He's the worst we've ever had. Dog training classes didn't help; we have a few tactics but they don't seem to be working. He doesn't understand that you can't go to the bathroom everywhere, (we have pee pee pads set out.), he bites everyone a lot and it hurts a lot, and he howls and cries when we put him in the crate and its such a loud horrible noise it makes you want to rip your ears off. He has gotten so bad that my mom is thinking of giving it away if he doesnt grow out of this. The biting is the most important thing because he could really hurt someone. Please help me deal with these things...! Thank you!

Peeing.
Take him out every 2 hours when you are trianing, and a half hour after he eats, and when he goes to the bathroom outside you have to praise him with lots of treats and sayiong good boy

Crate.
When you need to put your dog in a crate you have to let him know that being in a crate is ok and that you will come and let him back out.
Put his favorite toys and mabe a kong ball filled with peanut butter in his crate ( but only let him use the toys that you put in his crate when he is in the crate) You should start off by putting him in his crate for a few seconds leaving the room than letting him out and praising him and do this over and over again and lengthen the time after he doesnt start to cry.

Biting.
If he bites someone say no very loud and sternly then take him into an enclosed room away from people. After a few minutes take him back out and if he bites someone again take him into the enclosed room again. (it is easier to put his leash on and walk him into the room) After a while he should understand that biting means no attention and
being alone, also dont put him in his crate if he bites, because he will think that being in a crate means he did something bad. Good luck hope i helped!

• Try spray him with water when he pees in the house and then make him smell his pee. Take him out to pee every lil while so he doesnt have to pee when hes in the house. Or maybe he just hasnt adjusted to your house and gets nervous so he pees haha.

• It sounds like you haven't crate trained properly. You need to reintroduce him to the crate and associate it with positive things. Put his favorite treats/bone, toys, and blankets in there. He will walk into the crate on his own. Keep doing this every day..when you see that he has gotten more comfortable with the crate, start closing the door and leaving him in there for a few minutes. With each day, increase the amount of time he is in the crate.
  
  Why do you have pads on the floor? You should take your dogs out for walks every day. Your other dogs may have not needed much training but this one needs it. He may also be bored from being cooped up in the house all day. When he bites, say NO firmly and give him a bone/toy to chew on.

  On the biting. Don't punish. When they bite make a loud yelp, and turn your back to them and lift your hands and arms out of their reach.
  Biting means no play and no fun and no attention. They will learn really fast.
  
  And make the crate a fun place. leave the door open and put in treats and toys don't force him into it. Make sure it is big enough to be comfortable and let him come and go. The crate should be a place of comfort, not punishment. You can close the door when he goes in but open it again. Eventually he will allow you to close the door for longer periods of time and doesn't fear being left there.
  
  It takes time to properly train a puppy, but worth the investment for a beautifully trained partner.


• I know it seems very difficult when you have two other dogs that are apparently well behaved. When a new puppy (is the other shih-tzu a parent?) is introduced into the pack it is often hard for him to "find his place" and therefore acts out. The only way a dog knows how to get your attention when they want it is to howl, bite, and do things to get you to give them the attention they deserve. He is probably very insecure. You don't mention if the other dogs use the pee pads or do they go outside and are they crate trained? If the puppy is being treated differently than the others then he can resent this. If he is Truly aggressive to everyone my guess is that his socialization skills toward humans has been affected in some way or another. How old was he when you got him? All of these are the reasons why he may behave this way and if you start looking at how you respond to these behaviors you will then know how to fix them. Dog Health Questions: My dog has a few really small lumps on the back of his ears what could they be?

They are any were on the back of his ears and they go away after a while.they are skin colour with a small orange dot on top. You can only see them when you separate the fur but if you run your hand over the ear you can feel them. If they are scratched they bleed and the orange tip can be taken of but a new one will appear. We first thought they were grass seeds but they definitely aren't. They keep coming up on his ears and i just want to be sure they are nothing bad. Dog Health Questions: Need serious dog training help!?

I have a one-year-old female cockapoo who is spayed.

For a while, now she just simply won't let my sister or I pick her up. Whenever Mandy (my cockapoo) even has the slightest feeling that my sister or I want to pick her up, she immediately growls. Then, if you try to physically move her, she'll go crazy like an ill dog and sometimes even bite.

As to book titles ... Go to the library and invest an hour or so glossing over several or many. Then consider these two things:

1: Which appeals to your personal comfort; and
2: Does it address any specific issues of concern to you.

When you find the one that best elicits a "nailed it" on BOTH counts, that's the one to start with. It may not be, however, the right one ... but you will learn that as you go along.

Should you find that you made an incorrect choice (the training as instructed is not effectvely changing your dog's behaviour to suit your needs) don't beat yourself up. It does not mean that you are not doing it right, nor that your dog is not responding ... it just means it ain't working.

Dog Health Questions: Dog training vs leting dog have freedom?

i couldn't really word the title well. Okay, so i trained my dog for about 2 hours a day. Which included walks, just looking at me, coming back to me, and then in house training learning tricks. When i did a lot, meeko seemed to love it at first then when I starrted teaching him new tricks, like cover eyes, or anything that doesnt involve lots of moving, he got bored. If it involved lots of movement, he liked it a little more.

Now, i didnt do as much training this week cuz he got neutered so since we didnt do lots of training, he seems happier and listens to me a lot more and wants to be with me. when we walk, and i dont nag him, he barely pulls... why is this?

I train (about 5-10 mins each session unless its walks) and he ignores me more vs not training as much (i still did his basic tricks which he loves) and he now wants to be with me and comes to me on his own now). Did i over work him even though it was short sessions.

Both have moved to "training" their store clerks how to teach training classes (rather than hiring experienced trainers)... which may be workable if all the dogs (and their humans) are capable of learning in their specific method... but makes no real allowances for the oddball dog (or human owner). Problem solving skills are minimal.

Local kennel clubs and training facilities are a far better choice for the money. (Personally, I'd chose a training facilitie since they would not still be in operation if they had not been successfully training dogs).

Plus I know that part of the PetSmart program is to train the dog within the store - which is think is a big plus. Reason why is that while any dog can behave WELL in a structured environment, it's when they got outside of that environment you still want them to behave (ie: coming to you when you call in the house is good, but coming to you when you are outside and people and cars are around is 100x better).

Enroll in a training class if you'd like..... however, the most important thing.. i repeat, the MOST IMPORTANT thing is to spend time with your dog!! The bonding between a dog and its handler is the most important thing because it establishes the groundwork for great communication, where you learn the limits of your dog, and how he/she learns best, and your dog gets to know you, and what you are asking of him/her. The more time you spend with your dog, and the more interaction you have, the more eager your dog will be to please you. They are social animals and need the interaction in order to develop mentally and emotionally. Just an example, my mother had a purebred shepard that was so well trained that she would stop at the street and wait for my mom before attempting to cross the street, and my mom never took her to a class. Another good source for any breed is the book "Dog Training for Dummies"~ it's written by people who have trained many many dogs, and they know their stuff!

maybe the words speak and sit sound to much alike for your puppy to tell the difference, also in my experience when you work on one command so much the dog either forgets the other command or gets so use to the one command it automatically will do the same command hoping it will get it right, kinda like what kids do when they learn colors or numbers or there letters, what is this color and they say blue. If blue is the only color that they have learned they are going to say blue to every color that they see even if its not blue, and they can tell the difference but they don't know any other color to shout out, same with if they learn the color red then you spend weeks teaching them the color green and then you go back and ask them what the color red is they are going to say green because that is the freshest color in their mind, I'm not saying only teach the doggie one command but as you teach them one command don't forget to refresh them on their previously learned commands.

• Are your words or hand signals too similar for those two actions?
  
  When my dog was in a sitting position, i would put a treat in front of him and slowly move my hand to the floor. He would follow the treat, and often lay down when I did that. Now, his hand signal for lay down is a downward motion with my hand.


• I would get a treat in one hand and say down as you bring the treat down to the ground slowly. they will follow the hand movement and make her lay down for a couple seconds. or you can take take your index and middle finger and put them together and signal the two fingers up and then down.remember to give a happy praise with a high pitched voice if she lays down for at least 5 seconds. ( sorry if i cant explain that very well)


• well since she's learning speak, make sure you teach her "quiet" too!
  to teach laying down you can put the treat in front of the dogs nose and then bring the treat down under something, use your leg or a table, so that the dog is forced to lay down to follow the treat with it's nose. also, try teaching with hand signals rather than just words, something to show the difference between sit and speak. lol. just google training videos :)

For raising and training puppies I like Dr. Ian Dunbar's books Before You Get Your Puppy and After You Get Your Puppy. For the dog-human interaction I like Patricia O'Connell's The Other End of the Leash.

For a general book, It's Me or the Dog is actually pretty good and comprehensive.

Edit: Some books recommended represent training techniques based on outdated understanding of canine behavior. For example, the ideas of the Monks of New Skete were transitional between the old harsh training techniques and modern positive techniques. Be careful what you take from them. My 1978 edition of How To Be Your Dog's Best Friend, talks about how to discipline, for crimes as heinous as house soiling:

"How hard do you hit the dog? A good general rule is that if you did not get a response, a yelp or other sign, after the first hit, it wasn't hard enough. Remember, one good correction will save you fifty. You cannot hurt the dog with this method, or cause irreparable damage. Your contact must be firm." The chapter closes with the notorious, misguided "Alpha-Wolf Roll-Over."

As far as Siegal and Margolis go, I have seen "Uncle Matty" training in person. In my opinion he is a charlatan.

  I like what Milan says about dog psychology - it's really helpful in treating dogs like dogs - but these books I've suggested are more about communicating with the dog and persuading it to do what you want, rather than dominating the dog. They also talk about how dogs think as compared to humans. I've incorporated parts of all of their methods and have been very successful in helping rehab dogs, including puppy mill dogs. Each of mine and my parents' dogs are rescues and using their methods helped them overcome things like trauma because of being beaten on a regular basis, being chained outside, being starved.


• In all honesty? I walk into the book store every couple of weeks, stand in front of the dog section, close my eyes, and just reach out and grab a book. Unless it's a book about a specific breed, i tend to get the first two i choose, just like that.
  
  You can learn something from just about ANY book you pick up, even if it's "what not to do"! In addition, some books/trainers will have information that you can nitpick through or that you can adapt to your own style.
