Dog Health Questions: Petsmart training classes?

I am considering beginner training classes for my 5 month old pom. She has behavioral problems such as trying to bite and growling when I try to take something from her. Also when she tried to bite the lady at her spay appt. while she was trying to put a label around my pups neck. I tried socializing her as much as I could when she was younger, but she obviously has temperamental problems.

So my question is for those who have had their dogs trained if you think it is worth it. Also what can I do meanwhile to better my dog. And please please let me know your success stories with training. Thanks!

my experience with petsmart training classes is they are a cooperate way to get money out of you. i have seen very few dogs even able to sit and stay for the reccomended 3 mins by the end of one of their obedience classes. when i've been in the store on their doggy graduation night, most of the dogs in the class can't even sit and stay long enough to take their graduation pic.

for a dog with starting behavioral issues that are showing aggresssion, you need better training than what any petsmart i've ever seen can provide.

contact your local kennel clubs or your vet and ask for references.

i'm very happy you see this as a problem and want to correct it now rather than later.

my reccomendation is to find a training class that trains towards a CGC. or Canine Good Citizen test. By the end of that class your dog should sit, stay, but also they train the dog to react properly to stressful situations, and teach them how to be examined by a vet or groomer and properly accept praise. they also train them how to act in social situations. or rather they show you how to properly train your dog. i have yet to see a petsmart obedience class that comes anywhere near the CGC certification by the end of their classes.

Also these trainers if they think your dog needs further instruction they can send you in the right direction to someone who will better suit you and your dog's needs.

Please don't waste your money at a petsmart class. Their trainers go through a basic training course most any 12 year old could pass before they are turned loose with their own group of dogs to train.

• I think training works, if you do the homework each day. You cannot go to training once a week and do nothing til the next week. You really need to work with your dog each day, plus you can't quit after training either. You can lighten up, of course, but don't stop altogether. My dog won't stop barking at cars, bikes..everything really. It's becoming a bit of a nuisance for us and our neighbours.

Can anyone recommend a good dog training manual, guide or offer some suggestions themselves.

It sounds as if your dog is bored.

The citronella anti bark collars work for a short while until the dog figures out that when he barks he just moves his head away from the spray. As far as I know the electric shock ones are banned here in Australia.

Before you hand out all that precious money on training go to your local pet store and find him/her some toys to play with. There is something called a Kong where you put food inside of this toy and it takes them hours to get what's inside out.

The Importance of Dog Training

• As a positive reinforcment trainer I would highly recommend the book "dont shoot the dog" or "dont shoot the dolphin" by Karen Pryor. Its a great book and fabulous resource. In addition to this you may want to keep in mind...if you arn't training your dog your dog is training you! The key is being attentive to your dog, it is time consuming but it pays off. When you see a possible temptation arising i.e: car, cat, etc. etc. (if your dog knows basic commands) tell them to sit, have them give eye contact (if they don't know this it is simple.....show them the treat bring it towards your face and practice having them give eye contact and reinforce with a treat) and praise them for the eye contact. Basically keeping them focused on something more productive....remember dogs are ALWAYS thinking "whats in it for me". You may also want to try (although they are not the best) PetSmart or Petco your best bet is looking for a Positive Reinforcment trainer in your area try going to WWW.APDT.COM to search for a good trainer they are a fabulous resource for very good trainers. • bark collar, shock kind not the citronella as they learn to move their head to not get sprayed. The shock is not severe just enough to get their attention, make it go off and hold it, i've done it, it doenst hurt just startles you. Then once you have that on work on training, distractions so he doesnt pay attention to those things he barks at, then he wont need the bark collar.

  Find out why he barks. It sounds like he's bored. Play frisbee or ball with him.

• I have a pom/spitz and he use to bark all of the time it made me crazy and I was talking to someone about the electric collars but did not like that they shock the dog so I was against using them. So I went out and bought a muzzle. You have to allow him to bark sometimes that is his job as a dog. But when you want to train him not to bark do it at certain times like he really does not need to bark at bikes riding by so when a bike rides by tell him not to bark and when he still does it put the muzzle on him and tell him no and make him wear it for about 5 mins and it will not take long for him to stop. I know mine hated the muzzle and he use to bark really bad when friends came into the house and when I walked to the store I have to leave him outside on leash while I am in store and he would bark the whole time so once I started using the muzzle about a week later he stopped. Every now and then he starts again and I have to remind him of when he is not allowed to bark and put it on him for only about 2 mins or sometimes if he just sees it he remembers and stops. Dog Health Questions: Dog training social problems?

I know the title dosen't make much sense...

I have a dog, Scooby, he's a Blue Heeler and German Shepard mix, and I want him to go through training at the local PetsMart. They have a really good trainer that works there, she's really nice. But she can also be very dominant when training dogs.

But more of my dog's past... my Dad and I found them when coming home on the highway, in the middle of NOWHERE, in a Louisiana swamp. There were six puppies, two pairs of each were different. Two looked like blue heeler, two looked like german shepards, and the other two looked like rat terrier mixes. (Female dogs can get pregnant at the same time with different dogs.) And we saved them, nursed them back to health, they had worms, got rid of them, took them all to the vet, got shots, de-wormed, neutered and spayed, and we managed to give two away to good homes. I kept one of them myself, and he was the blue heeler/german shepard.
Anyways, we live wayyy out in the country so they've got a lot of room to play in, even though it's fenced. A couple of acres of fenced land. And the only socializing any of them get it with each other or when going to the vet. They're ten months old now, so they're pretty much full grown. And they don't socialize well at all. Especially Scooby. When people come over he will NOT go near them, won't sniff them, etc. And if I kinda nudge him over to them he'll force himself back as much as I allow and start growling. He's NEVER bitten anyone, never tried to. I think the growling is just a warning.
But I take him for walks down the road and he loves it, until the vet that lives down the road jogs past him. Or the kids playing ball talk sweet to him. He also has a bad habit of peeing on himself when he gets scared, so I haven't tried to get him to be more social, therefore I won't have to get peed on when he gets nervous.

I'm sorry for telling you his whole life story -_- I must be bored, lol. But I was just wondering if I all of a sudden enroll him in training at PetsMart, will it make his behavior worse? Should I slowly introduce him to people? How? Will he stay this way the rest of his life because it's all he knows now?

Any answers would be appreciated. Thanks : )

I wouldn't just thrust him into training without socializing him first. Take him in the car for rides to public park, let him see people without being too close to them and then get him out of the car after a few trips and walk him around. When he acts nervous or barks, just keep walking, drag him along pretend he isn't barking or nervous. If you give into that type of behavior, they get worse and worse. Just keep walking like there is nothing wrong and nothing to be afraid of. But don't leave any slack in the leash/get close enough to people so he can bight them. And have some treats to distract him when he starts crying or barking. I like to watch Cesar Milano the dog whisperer. It has really helped with my dogs, they barked and lunged at people/cars/bicycles... my yorkie also would pee on himself when he was nervous. It would upset me a lot and I felt so bad for him, then when I took him to the groomers one day, she said he was a totally different dog when I left and didn't bark or growl at all. • German Shepherds and ACD, are not supposed to be indiscriminately friendly, one of myGSD would not go to people for petting but if put on a Stand/Stay would be fine while examined even by the vet or at dog shows. Pushing him to people will guarantee he'll hate people more and someone will get bitten. A proper obed class should be fine but most PetsMart suck and an outside one would be much better.In class the dogs are NOT encouraged to socialize, the point is to be obedient when faced with many temptations or distractions. Invite a person over who he is most interested in or fears the least and you both sit on the porch talking and have the person not look at Scooby but toss yummy treats at him.As he gets more comfy with that person you use a diff one. Then when he goes near the person the person can tell him sit then toss the treat. If the vet scares him ask him to not run past Scooby but walk casually and throw food his way. While walking past kids keep him away from them but feed him yummy treats only when the kids are in sight. If he is ball crazy have the person toss a ball to him, underhanded and casually. Basically you want him to see "people near me=FOOD or my BALL". But an aloof dog is an aloof dog and pushing him will get someone bitten or give him a nervous breakdown. You can expect him to hold a stand/stay while someone examines him however, that is a command and not his choice and he will learn the diff. We had a severely shy GSD who would never approach anyone but the family and worked at class for a yr b4 he held the Stand/stay well enough to be shown and get his AKC CD. Also doing an obed routine while going past the kids will focus him on you not them. A well trained dog can not focus on his obed routine and praise and do well and be worried of kids at the same time. ACD standard The Cattle Dog's loyalty and protective instincts make it a self-appointed guardian to the Stockman, his herd and his property. Whilst naturally suspicious of strangers, must be amenable to handling, particularly in the Show ring. Any feature of temperament or structure foreign to a working dog must be regarded as a serious fault.
  The GSD standard The breed has a distinct personality marked by direct and fearless, but not hostile, expression, self-confidence and a certain aloofness that does not lend itself to immediate and indiscriminate friendships

Enroll in a training class if you'd like..... however, the most important thing.. i repeat, the MOST IMPORTANT thing is to spend time with your dog!! The bonding between a dog and its handler is the most important thing because it establishes the groundwork for great communication, where you learn the limits of your dog, and how he/she learns best, and your dog gets to know you, and what you are asking of him/her. The more time you spend with your dog, and the more interaction you have, the more eager your dog will be to please you. They are social animals and need the interaction in order to develop mentally and emotionally. Just an example, my mother had a purebred shepard that was so well trained that she would stop at the street and wait for my mom before attempting to cross the street, and my mom never took her to a class. i would say the best way to train a dog is patience, time, and little treats like little pieces of chicken or little dog treats. For the dog to obey that would go along with the training process, you need to train him for him to obey your commands and listen to you. As far as the out of control one, my dog has never been out of control but i would say either try to get him in control and that goes along with training or some people bring there dog to obedience classes. If your dog is sick you usually know, either they throw up, they have a loose stool, and you know your dog best so sometimes if they act funny like not themselves that could be a sign. So not all the time people are able to tell with signs if its something internal unless the dog is in a lot of pain.

Concentrate on showing your dog what to do and then praising for that.

As a habit we humans tend to focus on what the dog is doing wrong and how are we supposed to correct etc. When you take that part out of the equation and start to show your dog what to do all the time the default behavior of the dog goes to that rather than to doing things wrong and getting corrected... which also becomes a habit.

I once did an experiment at a dog trainer's school as I was instructing new professional trainers how to train dogs. I took the verbal communication out of the picture and had them show the dog what they wanted it to do by calmly gesturing and helping the dog into the right position, (sit, down, shake, stay, etc) using your hands and body language.

The dogs responded by learning the particular task much quicker.

So pretend your dog cannot hear your language (sort of true anyway), show your dog what to do physically and reward for the behavior, then start adding the word to the action. Take the "NO" and the corrections out of the picture and you probably will get much further than you are now!

The Benefits Of Dog Training Classes

• Be firm. Dont be a push over and dont let the dog rule the roost. If you suck at training then take the dog to classes. Simple. The ones in my area are only £4 a session so they arent expensive.


• Take an obedience class. They are fun, your dog will get to socialize, and you'll learn how to train your dog from a pro.
  
  I did it, and it was only like $50 for a 6 week session...Lessons once a week for 1 1/2 hours each. Call your Vet or local animal shelter to find out about obedience classes in your area.
  
  Short of that, there are lots of good books on how to train dogs.


• I got my 2yr old jack russell to do sit, lie down and paw and im attempting to get her to do beg lol:) i got her to lie down by pointing to the ground and she did paw one day and i then made her do it everyday by offereing her my hand. • well you did the right thing to try to train the dog as a puppy. You have to be straight forward with the dog be sure to use lots of treats and remember that eventually the dog will get tired or frustrated. You need to work with the dog a lot. Also try Baron's Dog Bibles you can get it at any bookstore and it has a great training video. you have to pick the book that has the type of dog you have on the front. Since its a mix you can do a Maltese or a Poodle. Or any other training video so that you can learn the basic commands and even some fun commands like speak, rollover, etc. My fog is a 4 month old yellow lab and is stubborn but knows sit,stay,come,lay down, rollover, speak, shake and lots more. And if you have a stubborn dog be sure to take a deep breath before training! so give it a try and GOOD LUCK

  Clearly, you're struggling at training your dog. Obedience classes are there specifically for people like you!!

Is there a way to get my dog from stop taring the toys and 1 bed i bought her.She is a Golden Retriever.And is a bark collar a good or a bad thing!!

Dog Training Clicker - Why Use a Clicker?

Recommended Answer:
Get her different toys and redirect her chewing. I recommend Kong toys - the big rubber ones. Stuff them with a bit of peanut butter and some dog biscuits - you essentially want to train her to chew those instead of the wimpy toys she can tear apart.

Bark collar is bad. There are several reasons AND there are some people who have had success with them but your chances of curbing the barking are much greater with other methods.

The general theory for positive methods of bark control is that you want to train her to speak on command, then hush ... "speak". "Quiet." If there's something (i.e. doorbell) that will make her bark, get a friend, say "speak" and then have friend ring the doorbell. Dog barks, you give treat and "make a party" (get SOOOOO excited that she just did SUCH a brilliant thing.) Then "quiet" and as soon as she's quiet, you treat again and make another party.

A golden with some experience of positive training (she knows that you treat when she does what you ask) should pick this up in 10 minutes but some will take longer.

For general training info, I highly recommend ANYTHING by Dr. Ian Dunbar. Check your local library - he has books and videos that are great. He uses all positive reinforcement (treat the good stuff, ignore the bad ... pretty soon you get mostly good, very little "bad" and you and your dog can have a happy friendship!) Positive training methods work exceptionally well with goldens!!

Effective Communication in Dog Training

• I do not believe in a bark collar, a dog barks because that's what they do if you want to control it make sure that there is plenty of stimulation if a dog is deprived of going outside of the interaction of others it will tend to bark more when they are outside.
  
  I ave trained dogs and I love the clicker, if you get a clicker from petsmart and what you do it bring your dog in to a room and make sure you have little chicken it is the best to train with little peices. click the clicker and give a piece of chicken you have to repeat this until your dog puts two and two together and then you can use it as training toy.
  
  With the tearing make sure your dog has toys that they know are there, that is very important. My dog when I buy her toys she takes the stuffing out and the squeaker but I buy her the cheap toys and it works out good,
  
  If you have a back yard you can buy a child sand box and teach your dog to dig and bury things in there and they may also keep them from tearing things up. the more energy they let out outside then better they will be inside,
  
  walking your dog is good too remember, that they are fun and exerise for you and your dog.
